I don't know how many of you are watching or did watch
the MTV Music Awards....
But I think this year is the most outrageous so far....
First we had stage diving by fans during Nirvana and the
lead singer stuffed his guitar into the amp and crawled
up on top of the drums...
Then we had RHCP up accepting an award and Flea jumps
up on top of the podium and makes 'jerking off' motions.
Then one of the other guys jumps in front of him and
makes it look like he's giving Flea a BJ.
And just now RHCP got up to perform and had a huge mosh
pit on stage with them. (does Flea always perform in his
Fruit of the Looms?) half naked people jamming and gyrating
all over the place....
So far I haven't been very impressed with the performances.
Even Elton was lousy. U2 has been the best so far.
Let's see what's up now....

disappointed in the sound of all the bands too! Then he said to me,
quite irritated I might add, "Nan, the sound sucks because the damn
sound person sucks. I know sound men in Boston that could have done a
better job than this A-hole." He said that when Elton performed all
you could hear was his piano.....when he watched Def L., you couldn't
hear any of the guitar or bass. He said, "That guitar should be
wailing, and look -- nothing!" He was so pissed off, that he changed
the channel right after Pearl Jam.

have thought previous years awards and live performances were lame. Im
afraid Im not kidding!! The only terribble performance's I thought were
Brian Adams, Eric Clapton, Elton John.....I like these guys, but I feel
they are washed up and over with as far as "good" new material. They
just didnt fit in with the rest of the evening IMO. Also, I didnt feel
GnR deserved the Vanguard...I think Abuse your wallet I and II are lame
albums...(except for a coupla tunes)....There only accomplishment seems
to be driven by Axl exploiting his personal problems and gaining
publicity from his idiotic attitude.

I do, but haven't finished watching it yet. I missed it again this year
because a class I'm taking started last night and I didn't get home until
10:30.
I have the warmup show as well.
I thought the Crowes did an awesome job getting the show started. U2 was
okay, but I've seen too much Zoo TV this year, so it didn't seem so novel.
I liked Garth playing with them though...
GnR got the Video Vanguard award? Amazing, I thought they'd be banned for
life from accepting awards after Slash f*d up a few years back.
I was a bit disappointed in the RHCP and Nirvana.
I thought that Van Halen's video actually deserved some of the awards it
got.
Howard Stern - what can I say? Ummm, nothing I guess... Crank up his
entrance on the HiFi VCR and it stinks...

| Couple of random comments....
- Dana Carvey is much better than Arsenio, who I never liked much
- Van halen deserved the awards for "Right Now" - its a great video!
- Pearl Jam was cool live
- Clapton, Bryan Adams, Def Leppard, Elton, GnR were all boring live
- En Vogue was pretty good live, even if I don't like their stuff (quite a
good, high-energy production number)
- My favorite part of the show was when the bass player from Nirvana tossed
his bass high in the air - and it comes back down on his face!!! Oh man,
that looked like it HURT! For those that didn't see it, he immediately
fell to the ground, got up, stumbled for about 3 feet, then fell down again.
He ended up staggering offstage with the help of a roadie.....
- What was the deal with the Michael Jackson lookalike collecting the award
for Nirvana? Stupid....
- And speaking of stupid - what is Howard Stern's problem? That was supposed
to be funny? Maybe if I was in junior high still..... maybe.....
- U2 were ok. Bono was funny with some of the comments he made with Garth!
- Black Crowes were a good opener.

| Ok, now for my comments on the show. Yep, I watched it. Yep, I don't
know why... The awards were a total joke, the same 5-6 videos were
nominated for EVERYTHING!
I mean "Let's Get Rocked"??? Gag! Let's get REAL!
Dana Carvey (sp?) seemed to lose it pretty bad on his improv stuff.
He's obviously a better writer/actor then he is at standup. He had his
moments though, like the scenes of him and the other dude doing Carson
and McMahon on the beach were a riot!
Howard Stern is such an idiot, but somehow through the disgustingness
of the whole thing, I still found it funny.
Overall, I thought that most of the attempts at humor were pretty
juvenile. I could have lived without them.
Lessee... Of the performances (the only reason I watched the show), I
liked Pearl Jam (they were great, but I wish they'd done a different
song, I'm getting burned out on that one), U2 (same thing, I think that
song is one of their weaker numbers), Nirvana (not because it was a
great performance, I just wanted to see 'em), and En Vogue (excellent
performance!) the best.
GnR were *ok*, but seemed sort of lackluster. Slashes tone was
absolutely nowhere, which is unusual since I almost always like his
sound.
The real chunk blowers of the evening for me were, Brian Adams (ack, I
had to change the station!), Elton, Def Leppard (the song sucked and
they were totally uninspired), the Black Crowes (band sounded good,
Chris Robinson improvised *way* too much), and Bobby Brown (I hate that
song to start with, and that performance of it was absolutely
terrible).
All in all, I could have watched the 5 minutes around Nirvana's
performance and been as happy as I was seeing the whole thing, AND had
the rest of the evening to do something more productive with.
re: JJ

Oh, did you miss the part right before Cobain starts whacking his amp
with the guitar where Novaselich (sp) throws his bass way up in the air
and misses the catch and it whacks him in the head? He looked like he
was about close to being down for the count!

Ok, ok...
Howard Stern got dressed up in a pseudo-superhero outfit
and called himself Fartman. His stomach and his backside
were both bared for all the world to see. (and he's got a
flat, flabby arse I might add) He comes flying down onto
the stage (via a wire) all the while playing a tape with
flatulence noises. It was quite disgusting. Kept saying
'touch my a@@, go ahead'. then he'd squat and and again
the flatulence tape would be played. this went on and on
an on......he got Luke Perry (who was co-presenting with him)
to touch his butt and then pulled some chick out of the audience
and she did it too. After the presentation (Metallica won) he
flew off again with the flatulence tape going.
Worse than anything I've ever heard about his doing on his own
show.
re: way back... Bob M.
Well I guess we have differing opinions. I thought most of the
live performances inhaled. Yes, those that won the awards probably
deserved them, but I wasn't impressed with the live acts.

Yeah, really! He looked really old there. Clearly too old to be
singing the cheezeball lyrics he still trys to. If it's gonna be aimed
at 13 year olds, the person singing should at least look like they're

I guess you're right, but I'd nominate it for "best special efx in a
video" or something like that, not for every stinkin award they give
out. The song was so lame that I don't think I ever actually saw more
then the first 10-20 seconds of the video (this *is* what they make

this year then usual? Seemed like the total emphasis of the show was
the performances.

Well, I'm not going to take all day reading the 50-some-odd replies
to this note but I'm throwing in my two-cents:
I thought the awards BLEW CHOW!! The sound of the bands stunk,
Dana Carvey was the worst MC I have EVER SEEN, and the actual
presentations was a mess (i.e., Wilson Philips and Boyz2Men presenting?
Ice-T and Metallica presenting best Rap? An award in the parking lot
before the ceremonies? P-U!!!).
The only good things I saw were Dana Carvey's skits of Johnny and
Ed, the bass player from Nirvana conking himself in the head (I like
Nirvana but I thought there psuedo stage-trashing was pretty stupid and
the guy deserved it), Cindy Crawford's rear-split skirt, and Dana
Carvey's comment on the show turning PG-13 after the Red Hot Chili
Pepper's psuedo on-stage blow-job (THAT WAS FUNNY!).
All-in-all, I thought the show absolutely stunk. I was never an
Arsenio Hall fan until I saw Dana Carvey try to MC.
Hammer.
PS. Oh, and I liked the Aerosmith "Rock the Vote" commercial.

| Best Joke: Jonny Carson-Carvey quipping, "In my day, Nirvana was a
scotch and soda and a night with Angie Dickinson."
Best Paradox: Nirvana's "Lithium" since maybe only 1% of their audience
really knows what that song means
Best Ego: Lars from Metallica.
Best Nomination: Weird Al Yankovic for Best Male Video, Smells Like Nirvana
Best Irony: Elton John pretending to trash his piano stool when his
performance immediately followed Nirvana's (think about it)
Best Symbolism: Axl performing with Elton John (the wheat allying
themselves against all that chaff....)
Best Surprise: Duff (G n' F'n R) looking decidedly less bloated,
purple, and dead on toilet than he has recently.
Best Parody of Himself: Slash trying valiantly to perform November Rain
while obviously "under the influence." (I've never heard him play so
badly -- watch the tape again)
Best Remedy: Seeing G n' R in concert the other night, still kicking
ass, with Slash and the whole band playing/sounding great, and still
proving that they deserve all the kudos given them during the MTV
Award show and that Metallica doesn't belong on the same stage with them.

872.74 | no fun! | KURMA::IGOLDIE | New World Order | Sun Oct 18 1992 04:48 | 15 |
| Friday night here in the UK and channel 4(bless them)have got the
highlights(ha)of this years MTV awards. This is the first time I saw
them but I knew what to expect from previous notes.
Nirvana were terrible and the bass player is a clown
Dana Carvey is as funny as a kick in the balls, which is what he should
receive for being host.
Slash sounded aweful
Annie Lennox deserved the award she got.
Red hot chilli peppers were good.Did anyone notice there was a brief 2
second shot of the singer from Fishbone with Anthony Keidis(sp)
...........and the 2 brats from Kriss Kross need a slapping and sent to
bed without any supper!

| I saw the Nirvana bit and them smashing their instruments, and it wuz
very similar to a video i`ve got of The Who back in about 1968 on an
American programme doing "My Generation".
The Who were a lot cooler, though. When the interviewer asked Keith
Moon wot his name wuz,he said "My friends call me Keith, but you can
call me John" ho!ho!
Aye,a load of crap basically.
