| I saw the Rollins band last year at Lollapalooza. This guy was breaking
my back just watching him sing. His moment reminded a bit of Angus
Young, but 1,000,000 times more violent. Id probably snap my neck if
I moved like that.....he must get some serious head aches.

Seemed more appropriate then having it in "What's hot"...
re: 854.1
> Rollins band is great....that dood is angry!
*Seriously* angry! And some of it is kind of "preachy", but I think a
lot of what he has to say is very good. On this album, at least, even
though his message is presented in an angry manner, most of what he
says actually has a positive message. A whole lot of it deals with
self esteem and that sort of thing.
re: .3
> You should read his poetry, well the stuff he calls
> poetry.....
I saw him on the Dennis Miller show a few weeks ago (one of the reasons
I went and bought the album), and he said that he doesn't call what he
writes poetry. His quote was "No, it's not that, I don't use the
'p-word'".
The band didn't perform on the show, he just spoke. It was an
interesting little 2-3 minute speech. Basically revolved around liking
yourself, taking care of your body, and staying alive. One interesting
quote was "I don't know any of you, but I like you". He spoke those
words with a lot of conviction, I believe that he actually meant it.
During the interview part, he also had an interesting perspective on
his work. He said "I don't have talant, I just work hard." He said
that he had a great drive to get things done. He said "I wanted to
write a book, so I formed a publishing company. I wanted to play
music, so I formed a band and set up gigs. You just have to do what
you want to do rather then sitting back waiting for someone to do it
for you."
He also talked a little about his broken home, having his best friend
shot on his doorstep last year, and some other things like that (in the
interview). Sounds to me like he's had a hard life, it's no wonder he
has all the anger he does.
I bought this album mostly because I liked what he said that night.
I'd only heard one song from it before.

I've been listening to some of their stuff (thanks Greg). At first I
wasn't too sure if I liked it or not. After a few listens I really like
the music alot, but the singer is a bit vicious for me. There are some
really good rock tunes on this album (Greg, whats the name of this?).
Some of the songs have a good groove and I really like them. Its pretty
raw stuff and definately what I call a "No Bullsh*it" band.

854.13 | Article/interview with Chris Haskett | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Who do you want to be today? | Mon Nov 02 1992 16:18 | 47 |
| There's a short article about Chris Haskett, the guitarist for the
Rollins Band, in the new issue of Guitar Player magazine. Since it's
short and interesting, I thought I'd reprint it here for your reading
pleasure.

ROLLINS BAND: POST-PUNK POETRY
Chris Haskett's playing with the Rollins Band is the perfect complement
to Henry Rollins' lyrics: brutal and honest, yet eloquent and
understated. "Henry calls us a blues band," Haskett explains. "We get
up there and sing and play our hearts out. For me, playing music has a
definite spiritual quality. If it didn't have that, I would feel like
a dilettante."
But don't expect any I-IV-V progressions or pentatonic solos from
these guys. The Rollins Band's grind-driven songs of modern urban
angst resemble the blues only in a cathartic sense. "We're not out
there singing 'Hoochie Coochie Man,'" Haskett comments. "It's more like
the genuine howl of a human being. Any kind of sincere music is the
blues in spirit."
On "The End of Silence" [Imago], the Rollins Band's latest release,
Haskett's thick-textured parts plow like a bulldozer behind the
wrecking ball of Rollins' vocals. "Our songs start out as jams," says
Haskett. "After that we play them live for months before we record
them, because the have to finish themselves by test of fire. That way
some of the more savage bits tend to round off a bit." [Man, if that's
rounded off, I'd hate to have heard the early forms -gh]
When playing live, Haskett utilizes a Paul Reed Smith and a
MESA/Boogie Dual Rectifier to create his dense sound. But he also
collects inexpensive archtop acoustics for his own enjoyment. "At home
I mainly play acoustic. I like old Harmony guitars with that low-fi,
78-rpm tone. I'm working on an acoustic solo album, with found dialog
and sound effects. It's like John Fahey on acid playing 'Revolution
#9.'"
In general, Haskett would like to see less emphasis on technique and
more encouragement of musical participation: "Music has shifted from
something everybody does to a commercial commodity. In industrialized
societies, there's an idea that music is only for specialists. People
go to rock shows for voyeuristic reasons, to see somebody else getting
off. That's a mistake, because it suggests that the audience can't get
off."

Hello Rollins fans,I like his stuff now but with Black Flag in the
ealier years the attitude was much worse which is what made it better.
Also the whole Hard-Core sean was just different those of you that
experianced it as it happend knows what I mean...
Back in the late 70's they (society) they said that what I was going
though was a stage, well it seems like a very long stage cause Im still
doin it...
So to hell with the people that put labels on others.
Never stop beleveing in what you think is right !!!

I just saw these Guys last Sunday night. That was the best show
of the year so far, granted I did miss Pantera... They came with
Sausage, and Helmet. Sausage is a takeoff band for the bassist/singer
from Primus. Well actually its his first band. For an opening act they
were cranking, they even played "Jerry Was A race car Driver". They
did manage to get the whole place moving for Helmet. Helmet was killer
too.
When Henry came out the whole place went crazy! There was bodies
flying everywhere. I must say that Henry is one Pissed Off
individual. I just reciently heard of them, and didn't know to much
about them, although after listening to End Of Silence, and seeing the
show, they are quickly becoming one of my fav's. I got my ticket as
a birthday Present from a couple of good friends, and well it was the
best Present that I got so far!

They have a newer album out, since The End of Silence, but I've only
heard bits of it. From what I heard, it seems like I prefer The End of

Yeah, his newer album seems a bit more refined and more commercial in
some respects...but still hard/angry in a lot more of it. I do like
EoS best, as that was the first (and only...so far!) time that I caught
him. Me and a friend saw him in Boston in I think '92 in November at
The Channel (before closing) and STP opened up for them! Hank was a
hankerin for a hunk'o somebody! He was intense! He pounded through the
crowd with sweat top/bottoms and no shoes to the bathroom with about 30
people following him, skipped outta someones touch and marched back to
the stage, opened with "Low Self Opinion"!!! I was psyched! Excellent
angry show! Have to see him again, and even find some of his poetry! :)

New one out yesterday, and I just HAD to get it! I hadn't heard the
tunes on the radio.
Lineup:
Rollins - Vocals
Sim Cain - Drums
Melvin Gibbs - Bass (Ex-Living Colour bassist)
Chris Haskett - Guitar
Theo Van Rock - Soundman, low end ranger
This disc kicks butt! A cross between TEoS and Weight I guess, a
heavier sound from the bass end. Excellent guitar work by Chris (I like
this guy, he fits so well with the music, it's uncanny!) and drum work
by Sim Cain. This guy is da ballz for Henry in this band! He's just in
there with the music and is cool to watch. I really hope Hank plays the
Centrum this year instead of a club date in boston....he can do it!
This one isn't as hard as TEoS so should reach a wider audience, and I
think I heard him swear maybe once in the entire disc, which is a
change from Weight where he was still pretty angry. In the liner is the
picture of the band members and he looks cool in a white shirt and
tie!
Song listing:
1) Shame - Excellent!
2) Starve - radio tune I think
3) All I want
4) The End of Something - another radio tune I think
5) On my way to the cage
6) thursday afternoon
7) during a city
8) neon - I like this tune!
9) spilling over the side - cool tune
10) inhale exhale - hmm, decent
11) saying goodbye again - good tune
12) rejection
