852.0. "Guitar World - Top 50 Heavy Metal albums" by DPE::STARR (Halfway to Heaven) Tue Jul 07 1992 19:08

Guitar World has a special Metal edition, and one of the articles included
a listing of what they consider to be the Top 50 HM albums. I was a little
surprised - although I don't agree with the whole list (both the order and
some omissions), overall they did a pretty decent job of it, really....

1. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
2. Metallica - Ride The Lightning
3. Kiss - Alive
4. Led Zeppelin - II
5. Van Halen - Van Halen
6. Slayer - Reign In Blood

31. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman
32. Mountain - Mountain Climbing
33. Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force
34. King Crimson - Red
35. Queensryche - Operation:MindCrime
36. Motley Crue - Shout At The Devil
37. David Lee Roth - Eat 'Em And Smile
38. Rush - Moving Pictures
39. Mercyful Fate - Melissa
40. Alice Cooper - Greatest Hits
41. Godflesh - Streetcleaner
42. Grand Funk - Live Album
43. Ramones - Ramones
44. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
45. Dio - Holy Diver
46. Budgie - In For The Kill
47. Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous
48. Metallica - Metallica
49. Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum
50. Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss

My picks for what else could have been included?
	Humble Pie - Rockin' The Fillmore
	Fastway - Fastway
	UFO - Strangers In The Night
	Blue Oyster Cult - Agents Of Fortune
	Boston - Boston
	Deep Purple - Made In Japan (over Machine Head)
	Tesla - Mechanical Resonance
	Accept - Balls To The Wall

But that's just personal taste, everyone is gonna have a slightly different
list. But like I said, overall they did a pretty decent job.

852.1Man, there *are* some odd picks in there!GOES11::G_HOUSEBlack Sheets Of RainTue Jul 07 1992 20:088
    I agree with *every* one of your replacement's, Alan. I might also
    be tempted to add:

    Anthrax - Among The Living

    Much better then some of the ones they picked, IMVHO...

852.2KDX200::COOPERA regular model of restraint...Tue Jul 07 1992 21:003
    I can barely beleive that British Steel isn't on there,
    			    OR
    Bostons first album (which is a MAJOR classic in my book)
852.3And what about FNM - The Real ThingCOMICS::JAMESMI used to be human until...Wed Jul 08 1992 06:467
    One little ommision....AC/DC - Highway to hell.... I thought this
    deserved to be there, maybe Scorpions - Blackout. And what is the
    Soundgarden album doing there....they are a talentless bunch of people,
    but there is undoubtfull a higher power at work.

852.4COMICS::JAMESMI used to be human until...Wed Jul 08 1992 07:033
    Oh and one last possible...

    Motorhead - No sleep til Hammersmith
852.5REFINE::TORCHIAWed Jul 08 1992 09:156
    I hardly consider Rush a HM band.

    It seems like they missed some obvious ones (re. previous replies) and
    really started reaching for some of them.

    Where is Metallica - Kill Em All ???
852.6SUBURB::COOKSwho the hell do we think we are?Wed Jul 08 1992 09:5611
    Venom - Black Metal and Godflesh Streel Cleaner are hardly classic
    metal albums. Classic bollocks more like.

    I would have included (unless i missed these):

    Rainbow - Rising
    AC/DC - If you want blood...
    Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
    Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo
    Skid Row - Slave to the grind

852.7Highway To Hell woulda made my list also!DPE::STARRHalfway to HeavenWed Jul 08 1992 12:069

852.8In the Immortal Words of Jeff Spiccoli...GNUVAX::BUCKLEYI need a REMEDY! HUH! yeah...Wed Jul 08 1992 20:3115
    "...ha! Those guys are fags!"

    I don't know who put this list together, but it sounds like they only
    took a correspondence course in HM or somethin. Any HM top 50 that
    doesn't have:
    	Aerosmith ROCKS (NOT! Toys...)
    	Appetite for Destruction
    	Heaven and Hell (or at LEAST one Dio album)
    	AC/DC (anything with Bon; preferably If you want Blood)
    in the top ten is "stoolin"

    And SOUNDGARDEN?!? Ex_squeeze me? Were YOU THERE when they opened for
    G N' R at the Centrum??? I've heard better bands at the local high
    school battle of the bands....
    Sister_rocks_and_appetite_get_my_vote_T.
852.9But *if* you want blood...GNUVAX::BUCKLEYI need a REMEDY! HUH! yeah...Wed Jul 08 1992 20:496
    ...you GOT IT!

    Ok, if they're gonna nominate Sound_garden, then I say let's add
    Loudness to the list, as well.... yeah, yeah, and ah, I didn't
    see any Poison albums on there either... yeah, that's the ticket.

    Yep, I think Soundgarden are probably the joint worst opening act I
    have ever seen, with the Electric Boys....

    What about Helloween Keeper pt I....
852.11VCSESU::COOKThe Cookster!Thu Jul 09 1992 09:432

    Helloween should definitely be in there.
852.12GOES11::G_HOUSEBlack Sheets Of RainThu Jul 09 1992 11:2639
    I can't figure out how they came up with that list. Some of it appears
    based on popularity, but that's *obviously* not the case with some of
    those bands, 'cause some are reasonably obscure!

    Weird...

    Thinking about it more, I might also include Ratt's "Out of the Celler"

>    	Aerosmith ROCKS (NOT! Toys...)

    I'd rather see "Get Your Wings" personally. Toys is a great album, but
    not their best.

>    	Appetite for Destruction

    Yes, imperative, but...it's there already! Number 11!

> Heaven and Hell (or at LEAST one Dio album)

    Also there!  Number 44...

> AC/DC (anything with Bon; preferably If you want Blood)

    Yep! I'd pick "Highway To Hell" personally, or maybe "For Those About
    To Rock".

>    And SOUNDGARDEN?!?

    Even though I happen to like Soundgarden, I didn't think the belonged
    in a list of the top HM albums OF ALL TIME. I don't think *any* album
    that's been out less then a year belongs in such a list, because it
    hasn't stood the test of time. Besides that, I don't thing Soundgarden
    are "heavy metal".

    >Ex_squeeze me?

    Umm...perhap...no no, just shut up, Greg...

    Is "Helloween" that band you were in from Maine?
852.14VCSESU::COOKThe Cookster!Thu Jul 09 1992 12:264

    Nope, that was the Gorehounds.

    Helloween is a German band.
852.15KDX200::COOPERA regular model of restraint...Thu Jul 09 1992 12:416
Helloween == 'F$getrri("clone","iron_maiden")'

FYI - F$GETRRI is an undocumented lexical function better known as
GET Rock-n-Roll information. It uses the system service $GETRRI
which extracts pertinent data from the users brain interface.

        They should be #1! And 2,3,4,5,6,etc.

                 here's my list:

                1.   G'N'R - APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION
                2.   "   " - USE YOUR ILLUSIONS 1\2
                3. SKID ROW - SLAVE TO THE GRIND
