842.0. "Hardline" by TENAYA::DOERFLER (Lisa - I want some milk) Thu Apr 30 1992 20:12

	Hi y'all.

It's been awhile, but wanted to remind everyone that the
new Neal Schon production Hardline/Double Eclipse was released
on Tuesday! (Anybody on the East Coast heard the single yet?)

The album is a bit "heavier" than Bad English. But I still
wouldn't classify it as heavy_metal. Metal yes, heavy no. The
first song "Life's a Bitch" starts heavy...then they mellow
out a bit. "Takin' me Down" is the first single.

Of course, the lineup includes my personal favorite and former
Bad English drummer Deen Castronovo. (Rob R. you better run
right out and buy this album!)

The rest of the band is Johnny Gioeli (vocals), Joey Gioeli
	(guitar), and Todd Jensen (bass).

Johnny & Joey were in a band called Brunette out of L.A. when
Neal heard them and decided he wanted to produce the brothers,
but when Bad English was going bad they decided to put together
	a totally new band...Hardline.

Todd Jensen is formerly of the David Lee Roth band and Sequel
(from Portland, OR). Deen introduced him to the band.

They did 3 shows w/Van Halen in the midwest earlier this month,
and are negotiating a contract to open for Def Leppard on their
	'92 U.S. tour.

I went to the record release party in San Francisco Monday night.
I don't know how many of you have gone to these things...very
boring. Actually it was fun meeting Joey and Johnny and telling
embarassing stories about Deen (he wasn't there to defend himself).
And I did get a CD, pics & bio at the party...so I guess it
	was worth the drive.

Well that's my $.02 for a week or so! Love to hear your reviews
if anybody's picked up the album yet.

I heard a song from these guys on the radio a day or so ago and was
kind of surprised. It was a rockin song with heavy, up front, guitar.
Not like most of the other stuff Schon has done.

Sounds like a new and improved Bon Chokie-ish with a bit of Tesla
and Tora Tora all rolled into one. It didn't really jazz me that much.
Maybe if Lisa introduces me to the band I'll listen more. The Guitar
    smokes tho...

Well if you didn't buy the Bad English albums because Deen
	didn't wail enough - don't buy this one (OMIGOD! I can't
believe I just said that.) There's a couple of places on
the record where Deen gets in a few good licks, but it is
by no means a Wild Dogs type drumming. But, buy it anyway,
for me? Deen gets so moody when things aren't going well,
I'm afraid I'll never get that jag he promised me! ;-)

Hardline is currently touring smaller venues in the mid-west
with Mr. Big and Electric Boys, they plan to cover the U.S. by
	the end of the year.

I picked up HARDLINE about 1 week ago, I like it quite a bit.

It is heavy in some spots, but still has a nice flowing
	melody for the most part...

As others said it is MUCH better than Bad English.... (did
	anyone say that?)

Anyway so far I like it a lot...

BTW that concert tour Mr. Big, Hardline, and Electric Boys
will be playing at Riverside park on the 24th of July..

Coasters and R&R a good combination... Might be worth
	checking out.

842.7The Cyclone was MUCH better than Mr B! ;) Hardline rooled! MPGS::HOWESJust keep my heart in your eyes.Sat Jul 25 1992 04:1927

Well, here we go, I am entering my review into the 'Hardline'
note because they are my fav. of the three bands...

I will go in order of appearance...

Electric Boys - THEY DIDN'T SHOW!!!!! No 'I'll make you scream and
shout' !!!! ;^) Oh well maybe another time.

Hardline went on first to warm up the crowd for Mr. Big.
They played about 5 songs off of they release. like
'Hot Cheire' 'Takin' me down' 'Life's a b*tch' and so on...
Neil Schon (sp?) was very good! He had great sound. Overall
they were VERY good, I was impressed! The only thing that was
	lame was the dummers solo.

Mr Big, I am not a big Mr. Big fan by ANY stretch of the
imagination. They put on a pretty good show though. They really
hard the crowd into it. They did a TON of songs like 'Green
tinted 60 mind' 'To Be with you' 'addicted to that rush'
	and so on.

Just got my tix for the San Jose Event Center show (8/29) and now
have to go through BASS Tix for the Marin Civic show (8/23). Yuck,
I hate BASS. Oh well if my friend wasn't a total flake, I'd wouldn't
have to worry about these things...I'd have tix and back stage passes.
	But NOOOOO!!!!

Oh well. Still looking forward to the show - thanks for the review
Seth. Can't wait to tell Deen his drum solo was lame! ;-) That'll
be my retribution for him not getting me free tix, etc.!!!! HA!

	Lisa
842.10I hope they come around again, so I can see em again.MPGS::HOWESJust keep my heart in your eyes.Mon Aug 03 1992 19:0018

Oh Lisa, that's right you know these guys eh?

Tell them I loved em! They put on a great show! They outdid
the BIG attraction Mr Big (who were quite boring)...

Yeah, I thought the drum solo was lame... Nothing really special
and Deen threw the stick in the air a few times, and he missed
catching it once or twice. (of course he had a container full of
sticks so he just grabbed a new one, and made it look like he
	caught it).

But really... Tell them they were REALLY good!!!

842.11coolness!TENAYA::DOERFLERLisa at DTN 543-3576Wed Aug 05 1992 16:3912
I will definitely do so if I get a chance. They'll be very
happy to hear it! Deen thinks it's really cool that I keep
the H_M conference up to date on the band.

I really like them too! A ton better than Bad English.

Too bad about Deen's solo - he's really a fantastic drummer,
although Rob R. hates all of his new stuff :-) I'll let you
know how his solos go here.

842.12That is cool!!!!MPGS::HOWESJust keep my heart in your eyes.Wed Aug 05 1992 17:2517

	Great Lisa!!!

I think it is cool, that you tell memebers of the band
	that I like them!!!

They were definately the best out of the three bands.

I got a couple of other people hooked on Double Eclipse (sp?)

I agree, it is 100000000 times better than Bad English...
Although I did like a couple of their songs.....

							-Seth
842.13another totally unbiased review for you all ;-) !TENAYA::WALTERSLisa at DTN 543-3576Mon Aug 24 1992 19:4763
They were so incredibly awesome! I mean really - these guys
rock live -- (I know I know I said that about Bad English too!)
But it's true, you have to believe me.

oh gosh i'd better start at the beginning...My friend and I
arrived early (the show was in Marin, about 1.5 hours from
my house) so we could get right up front cuz Deen hadn't called
and I wanted to make sure he knew I was there! Well we pulled
into the parking lot of this place and started cracking up...
there were only about 50 -60 cars in the lot! too funny! the
place was tiny (a small exhibit hall at the civic center).

Electric Boys were good, but I was checking out the crowd and
seeing if I could catch Deen or one of the other guys, but no
	luck.

Then I saw Jay Gilbert from MCA who put on their record release
party...he happened to be going backstage after the show and
said he'd get my friend and I back...coolness.

Then Hardline came on. They were so great - we were about 4 -5
people back, but Deen saw me so next thing I knew some english
roadie dude was giving me and Terry passes - YAY!

Deen's solo was kind of lame...I'm not going to defend
him. His kit is much smaller than what he used to have, maybe
	that makes a difference, I don't know?

But you know what the very very very best part was?! Earlier
in the show they had announced that there was going to be a very
special guest - After Hardline's set Johnny came back out and said
"We're not leaving - we're having too much fun!" and they started
playing...I couldn't quite tell what it was at first and there
was some chubby blonde guy standing offstage and then he came out
and it was SAMMY!!!! SAMMY HAGAR! and they played "Standing on
Top"! I mean I was THIS CLOSE to Sammy! In fact, Terry had her
SCHON FN license plate and was holding it up and he saw her and
gave her thumbs up! AAHHHHAHAHA! I know, I know, I'm too excitable!

So to wrap it up we totally missed Mr. Big (eh who cares!) and
instead went backstage (actually outside on a patio area) and hung
out with Deen and the guys and Electric Boys (who were very nice,
but kind of quiet) and Sammy came out for a little while too.

Isn't that just so cool!? there now...I'm over it, really. I swear!
	      AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

	peace!

	Lisa

Seth I hope you read this...I'll send you mail seperately too...
I told the guys that they made a big fan after the Riverside show
and they were so surprised...first they wanted to know how I knew
you...which they thought was totally cool (the conference that is)
They said, it's really too bad that they can't meet all of their fans,
because they do appreciate each and every one of them. They also said
to tell you "Thanks Alot Man, we had a great time at that show!"
(That was a edited version of what Johnny, Joey and Todd said when I
	told them about you.)

842.14review of SanJose show...nothing earthshakingTENAYA::WALTERSLisa at DTN 543-3576Wed Sep 02 1992 16:0935
Yeah it's all the same...the show was
great but the guys (Hardline) were in
a fowl mood for some reason.

It didn't show on stage...they blew
Mr. Big away! I actually did watch
Mr. Big this time...and they were good,
but Hardline was great! And more than
one person that I talked to after the
show said the same thing...so I know
	it's not just me!

The rumour is Makita extended the tour
for 2 more shows...I know not where.
Maybe that's why the guys were ticked
off, maybe they were ready for a break?
Or maybe they weren't included in the
	extension...?

	I don't know...all I know is that when
I got to their dressing room, I had
no desire to talk to any of them...talk
about a bunch of whiners! So I have to
apologize to Seth because I didn't ask
anybody for an autograph or photo or
anything; I said hello and goodbye and
that was that. It's hard to remember
sometimes that they're just folks too,
they get tired and grumpy just like
everyone else...it's got to be hard as
	hell to be ON all_of_the_time.

Oh well...it was still a good show.

Don't know much about them (i.e. when the first album came out) but I saw them
support EXTREME at Whitley Bay in the UK in December if that's any help to you.
