717.1 | it might grow on me more..... | DPE::STARR | Out Of The Cradle, Endlessly Rocking! | Wed Oct 07 1992 18:38 | 33 |
| Here it is, 8 months later, and the Blind Melon album finally came out.
Got a copy of it last night, and gave it a spin on the way in. Overall,
I'd say it's good, but not great.
To be more specific - I really like the band, and I also really like
Shannon's voice. However, the songwriting here is a little weak, and
there's no killer songs or hooks.
The band is hardly heavy metal - they are more akin to something like
the Spin Doctors or something like that. Sorta funky rock. About half the
songs are slow, mid-tempo ballad-type songs. It's a touch reminiscient of
early-70s pop/rock like Grand Funk.
The songlist:
Soak The Sun
Tones Of Home
I Wonder
Paper Scratcher
Dear Ol' Dad
Change
No Rain
Deserted
Sleepy House
Holyman
Seed To A Tree
Drive
Time
All the songs were written by the band, and the band co-produced the album
with Rick Parashar.

| What is it with these guys, do they have trouble finding a style? I've
heard two of their songs now and they were both completely different.
The one I heard this morning was *wicked* like the slower stuff from
Jane's Addiction, but the one I heard a couple of weeks ago was
different.
I liked the one this morning, but the one I heard before was real
generic sounding and didn't catch my ear at all. I'd have to hear
quite a bit more before I'd consider buying the album.

Saw these guys last night. I was impressed. Really good musicians who
can funk it up. The crowd was REALLY rockin'. Must be the college
freaks or something, but they were ALL over. Startin' push-moshes and
ridin' on top. At one point the crowd was bouncing so much I thought
the floor was gonna fall through. It was packed. Anyone that went to
the Dream Theater/Chapter II gig... man this was like twice as bad.
Anyway, they opened up with TONES OF HOME (Single that's out) and the
crowd all had an epileptic spasm at once. Was really cool. They played
for over an hour. Even got to hear a little diddy about Shannen Hoon's
dog, and that it died. Was a funny song.
Afterwards got to meet the band. They're all really cool guys. Shannen
seemed really low key, and they were all funny.
Anyway, good show, I'd go see them again, and definitely recommend the
CD and live show.
er.. ask Danielle more about details, she was the one smooshed up
against the stage. ;')

they were rubbish but I thought they were alright. Not brilliant but
the singers got a good voice.

| I picked this album up the other day and think it's pretty good.
I don't know why it was in the Heavy Metal bin... and I don't know why
they picked such a dumn cover... I flipped it around so the band's
pictures show.
If I had to classify the music I'd say a lot of the songs sound like a
cross between Jefferson Airplane and Pearl Jam.

Actually, I thought that the cover was strange until I saw the video
with her in it...then I saw the light...and now I am saved...

Crazy Al, I didn't see any lewd comments from reply .11
Or are you just overly sensitive from the loss?
Must be, you usually don't place such blatant cuss words in
your replies like you did in .12
We understand, hey Shawn, can you clean up Al's reply a little,
he's a bit distraught over Hoon's death...

No lewd comments in .11, no ... but given this conference's views
on Blind Melon in general I don't blame him for asking beforehand
that the band/singer not be blasted for nothing.
Especially since they hadn't even recorded an "unplugged" album
yet.

| I heard this yesterday on the radio. I don't get it - Musicians have been dying
of ODs for years, you think that they'd catch on. These people have gotten to
the point where they can afford almost anything in life yet they play with (I'm
assuming heroin here) which is pretty likely to kill you.
Kind of sad

Well, to reply to your comment, perhaps you should access
VTX POLICY. Read through the section on Digital's computers
and networks, especially the section regarding profanity.
I know we all can handle it, in fact some of us use the
language on a friggin' daily basis, but not in here...
And no one would blame Al for getting emotional, he was only
venting emotion, no one would get angry about that.
