    NEW FACES

    Ugly Kid Joe

    Living out their fantasies

Booked to play with the glam rocker Pretty Boy Floyd two years ago, the
then nameless metal band Ugly Kid Joe took the gig and scrambled for a
memorable moniker. Forever clowning around, vocalist Whitfield Crane,
guitarist Klaus Eichstadt, drummer Mark Davis and guitarist Roger Lahr
(bassist Cordell Crockett joined later) swapped their temporary tag -
Surburban Alcoholic White Trash (SWAT) - for something with marquee
appeal. Crane explains that Ugly Kid Joe captures the cheeky bent of
the band and "is an amalgamation of all of us, a scrappy little bratty
kid that likes to drink and f(ck negative authority - everyone kind of
likes him, even though they kind of hate him."

The Pretty Boy Floyd date didn't happen - but Ugly Kid Joe did.

Never dreaming that it would be anything more than a small-town party
band from Isla Vista, California, Ugly Kid Joe caught the ears of a
Santa Barbara DJ who, impressed by the songs' "demented lyrical
content" and the motley mix of metal, funk and thrash, directed the
band's demo to entertainment lawyer Dennis Rider (now the band's
manager). Rider sent it to Bob Skoro of Mercury Records; after seeing
one performance, Skoro started talking futures. "He acted so fact,"
Eichstadt recalls. "It was like a gut thing."

*As Ugly As They Wanna Be*, Ugly Kid Joe's debut EP, has spawned three
singles: "Funky Fresh Country Club," which incorporated Black
Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf"; the melodic, metal-edged "Everything About
You," featured on the *Wayne's World* soundtrack and which Eichstadt
calls "an antilove song"; and "Madman", a headbanger blitzkrieg about a
lunatic loose in Disneyland. Completing the mind-blowing package: MTV
notoriety, nonstop touring, an album and a summer tour with Ozzy
    Osbourne.

Friends - and die-hard Ozzy fans - since eighth grade, Crane and
Eichstadt, now twenty-four, are living out their adolescent fantasies.
"At this point, it's a band that really cares about each other," says
Crane, "and we look at each other like 'What the f(ck is this?' It's
insane. It's the most fantastic thing I've been involved with - ever."

I just heard their new song called 'Neighbors' (or was it Neighborhood?)
Anyway it ROCKS! It's better than 'Everything About You' I think.
It's heavier, kind of Megadeth sounding. The singer sounds a little
Vince Neil-ish at times (but better).

It beat Motorheads ballad with Ozzy on rock wars. Which was also a

    Simply put, I love it!

These guys really crank and have some depth to their style
ranging from the hard 'n crunchy to the light 'n funky.

They didn't have a name at show time, so they picked "Ugly
Kid Joe" as a satire of "Pretty Boy Floyd" ... and decided
    	to keep it.

That must've been quite the show ... I think UKJ probably
    	blew PBF off the stage!!

actually, the show never happened... pbf cancelled and left
ukj hangin'. they still weren't sold on the name, but in
promotion of the show someone (i think in the band) drew a
caricature of the little 'ukj' dude and the band loved it
so they kept the name anyway....

No, I think you misunderstood my note. He did sound for Pretty Boy

    	OHHHH well.

They do have a song or two with there style I guess. They also have
a Led Zep type sound to them. The only problem I see with them
becomming well known is the record companies approach to marketing
them. They created a company called Halfway Home Productions or
something like that for a label. They are trying to make it seem
like they were this band from some unknown label that they
discovered. Once that happens they will release the other material
already recorded and ready to go on the major label.

I'm not very good at album reviews so I quess thats about it.

| | I picked up "Menace to Sobriety" yesterday at Virgin.

The album contains 14 tracks for less than 50 minutes long.
Bad news, lyrics are not included, so I fear I'll have to try to guess
what the songs are about (And it's much harder when english is not your
    native language).
first track, "intro", is of course an instrumental (Useless, IMHO).
Fortunately, the rest of the album is far better. All tunes are worth
a listen, and if you like diversity you should go for it.
    "Tomorrow's World","CUST","Milkman's Son","Suckerpath","Jesus Rode a
Harley","10/10","VIP"...Best ones, IMO. Even a Ballad ("Cloudy Skies")
and an accoustic ("Candle Song") included.
Something's surely missing from "America's...", the FUN. But I think
UKJ just want to be recognized as a real Metal band now...

At last, the album is dedicated to the memory of Roy CORTEZ, whose
picture is obviously on the back sleeve. Forgive my ignorance, I
don't know who Roy CORTEZ is, maybe a Bullfighter ???

After 5-6 listens, this is a great album. I'd say it's as good as
their last one, but for different reasons.

"America's Least Wanted" was great because it was a fun, rockin'
album. "Menace to Sobriety" is great because it's a heavy, rockin'
and catchy album. High points are "Clover" and "Jesus Rode a
Harley", and there's even a pretty good power ballad.

    	Definitely recommended.

Not bad ... I'd already heard "Madman" and "I Hate Everything

On America's Least Wanted they do a remix of Hate Everything About You.
It starts off with Pat (the androgenous person from Sat Nite Live)
talkin and it's pretty dumb. They should have left that part out.
Other than that I think Least Wanted is better than the debut cause
it has more songs on it, even if they are covers. More for your
    dollar.

Good point ... forgot about the voice-over.

But I think that's the only difference.

| | FWIW, they are in the studio right now, not sure when they will be
finished, or what kind of release date they are looking at.
My buddy Jim was running late, as usual and the band was
already at the studio, so our conversation was brief.

    	Later,

I picked up "Motel California" last night ... didn't even know
it existed until I happened to see it at Newbury Comics, but
it's been out for at least a month since it's got a '96 date
    	of release on it.

After 1 listen, it's not bad. Not their best, though. He's
still got a great voice, and the musicality is good.
