813.0. "Bgymn" by BEATLE::REILLY (So I rewired it...) Fri Oct 25 1991 16:51

                              -< TH now a Bogeyman >-
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guitarist Tim Harrington has formed a new trio with MOR drummer
Vinnie Ludovico and former 805 (big Syracuse local band) bassist
     Creamo Liss called The Bogeymen.

Well, almost 2 years later. I *finally* got a copy of the debut
Bgymn CD, "There is no such thing as..."

EXCELLENT! Really. I may like them better than M.O.R. For those of
you who found the Masters a little too light, you're in for a good
suprise! This album is much heavier and quite a bit darker. I don't
feel as hesitant putting this into HEAVY_METAL as I did with M.O.R.
It's not thrash or speed, just good honest riffs on solid crunching
    tunes.

Tim Harrington and the boys still manage to sound unique while at the
same time mixing in those great old influences from yesteryear. Tim
sings now (better than Goss? - you decide!), and on the first song
"The Cosmic Continuum" he (and the song) sound just like old Ozzy/Black
Sabbath. One of the 2 slower songs, "Get on Home" rivals the best of old
Traffic, and "(She will) Suck you dry" is just about the head-bangingest
thing I've seen come down the Pike in a long while. Check out the uses
of Mandolin and Hammond B3 also (but don't worry, the songs CRANK, anyway!)

My guess as to first single: "Killing Ground" (not my favorite).

    No Bgymn fans yet, huh?

I'm tellin' ya, you're missing out. Oh, maybe you haven't seen this album
anywhere or heard it on the radio. Well, good point, but it looks like
Delicious Vinyl will finally start promoting this album the way it should
    be.

The record company didn't do a very good job of doing up the first
single, "Killing Ground," but a BIG show in Syracuse, one coming up
in NYC, rave national reviews, and talk of a new album have gotten it
    up off its butt.

Tim Harrington is writing up a storm and remixing the first album's
second single. It will either be "Get On Home" or "Suck You Dry (She
Will)." That latter is wicked heavy (and appropriate for this crowd),
but the former is nice piece of accoustic/electric/bluesy work that
should get them some real good press.

Anwyay, they seem to be on a better roll than the Masters (who will
also have a new album out in April), so things are looking up for the
    band and its stability.

I had it in my hand one night at Strawberries, but something else
looked more appealing and I put it down.

But I will trust your opinion, and I will get this album, like I
did for the 1st "Masters of Reality" album, which cranks!!

Hey, no problem! Different strokes for different folks and all
that... I'm mostly a Read/Only Noter in here for the main reason
that I'm not into a lot of the newer Heavy Metal groups (okay - I'm one
of those relics who thinks groups like Metallica and Guns 'n' Butter
stole the definition of Heavy Metal out from under me)... But that's
cool. Just 'cause I miss music like Blue yster Cult, Black Sabbath,
Grand Funk Railroad, Deep Purple, etc. doesn't mean there isn't room for
the "new" stuff. Anyway, this group was one of the few "current"
Heavy Metal groups I could sink my teeth into.

Don't know your likes too much, but I think I remember you mentioning
in here that you like Megadeth and hate Red Hot Chili Peppers so, we
already differ in taste :^). Totally fine! But if you ever feel like
expanding upon "I hate them" I wouldn't mind hearing about it, you
know, just out of curiosity, 'cause I think their rock is pretty radical.

    Keep rockin'

813.5Yup, I am not the Master of reviews.MPGS::HOWESHold your heartbeat in your hand.Thu Jan 30 1992 19:5713

Yeah, I do admit 'I hate them' is not much of a review... 8)
I listened to the tape twice about three months ago?! And all
I remember is that I didn't like it. I tell ya what I am gonna
do (I sound like I am selling something). I will borrow it
again, and give it another listening to, and then I will tell you
why I don't like it (Or maybe this time I will like it).

Yeah, I do *love* Megadeth, and hate the RHCP (Primus, FNM...and so on..8)

George Rossi, the guy who played keys for this band, has been having
some outstanding success with his new venture, Little Georgie and
    the Shuffling Hungarians.

I was in Syracuse for the NCAA's and spoke at length with the dude
at Sound Garden about the band (and the local scene in general these
days). He recommended the new double CD recorded live at Styleen's
Rythym Palace (the store clerk is a bouncer there), "Roll Up The Rugs
and Crank It" and it does not dissapoint.

2 solid hours of footstomping boogie woogie - blues, funk, a lot of
barrelhouse piano, steamin' vocals from the George-O-Lettes, and a
thunderstorm of horns. Yes, this is *decidedly* different than the
George we used to know and love. I've been looking for this for a
while here in MA, but hadn't found it anywhere, so I picked it up.
Kinda Commander Cody, kinda Little Feat, but more bluesy.

Btw, Tim Harrington will have a national release later this year,
    too.
