801.0. "The Four Horsemen" by POWDML::GOLDBERG (rev it up little boy and ride) Wed Sep 25 1991 10:16

    - Taken without permission from Rolling Stone, Issue 613, September 19,
    1991.

    THE FOUR HORSEMEN

    (three and a half stars)

Talk about going for the throat. Only halfway through their
twelve-song debut, the Four Horsemen deliver three manifestos -
"Rockin' is Ma' Business," "Can't Stop Rockin'" and "Let It Rock" - and
enough Marshall-stack frenzy to render them the vanguard in the
flourishing boogie renaissance. And with Guns n' Roses, the Black
Crowes and a horde of lesser guitar obsessives having made the radio
safe for a return to rock fundamentalism, this crew should soon be
    massive.

Except for Brit rhythm guitarist Haggis, a former member of the Cult,
these guys are L.A. bar-band misfits, and their style, especially that
of powerhouse vocalist Frank Starr, reflects that brawling scene. Dave
Lizmi's scorching lead lines, however, easily recall such
Jacksonville, Florida, outfits as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackfoot and .38
Special - and the influences don't stop there. In fact, part of the
fun of this album is in sifting through its bag of quotes: Aerosmith's
jauntiness on "Tired Wings"; chanted choruses that echo Kiss; the
fusion of the Yardbirds' "I'm a Man" motif with ZZ Top's adrenalin
blues on "Can't Stop Rockin'"; and the troglodyte stomp of vintage
    AC/DC.

What makes these songs more than a game of Name That Riff, though, is
expert playing and the happy fury of the sound. Rick Rubin produces,
and the percussive crunch he lent Run-D.M.C. is echoed in the sonic boom
of drummer Ken Montgomery (who calls himself Dimwit). With Slayer,
Rubin captured the bite of assault guitars; for the Horsemen, he
achieves the effect of Chuck Berry on overdrive.

Feeding Starr's vocals through a simulated CB on the raucous
"Moonshine" is a fine, fun touch that underscores the band's humor, a
grace note that's rare for the Horesemen's genre. And subtle pop-song
embellishments (organ fills, maracas, hand claps) lend buoyancy to
their attack. Make no mistake, however - in reviving the great
mythology of the rocker as outlaw and rebel, the Four Horsemen are rock
& roll true beleivers, and the intensity of their music attests to the
    fire of their faith.

I was in Worcester this morning, so I stopped by Lechmere and
picked up the CD, and taped it when I got home. So in the car
I had a chance to listen to almost 1/2 of it on the way here.

The lead singer goes from sounding like Bon Scott to the lead
singer from Dangerous Toys to the lead singer of The Big F [sort
of]. A good amount of range there, IMO. Not as good as Mariah
Carey's range, but then again these guys can also write some good
    	songs. 8^)

I can't stand that song "rockin' is my business"! Sounds like an
AC/DC copy to me..... Then again, I don't like Kix for that same
    reason.

Tonality: Sounds just like AC/DC.... rehash of everything already done
    		before

Lyrics: "Rockin' is my business...... and business is good" Gee
sounds awfully like an album name by one Megadeth: "Killing
    		is my business..."

Band name: The Four Horsemen: Song by Metallica.

This line is only on the version wimpy 'AAF plays. 'BCN plays the
unedited version of the song ("If business is so good, why am I
so f****** broke?"). Kind of funny that 'AAF promotes themselves as
this big radical bad-boy station, yet they are far tamer on-air than
    'BCN.

Okay, so I finally made my Noteworthy order of the month and included
their "Nobody Said It Was Easy."

In at nutshell: easily, *easily*, EASILY, the best and most rocking
CD I've purchased in a long, long, time.

This album totally cranks!!! I dunno if its "metal," but it IS a gutsy,
down and dirty, heavy, boogy, Friday night, turn the speakers up
to 11, rock assault. Really what I've been looking for in a high-
energy band since I cant remember when.

Forget the hits, check out "Seems like 75" (that's "Nineteen" Seventy
Five to you kids), "Looking For Trouble" (AC/DC revisited),
"Moonshine" (a VOICE box! talk about the good ole days), and "Nobody
Said It Was Easy" (nice anthem type belter).

This is the kind of CD that just usurps my listening for weeks in a
    row.

Exactly!!! When I put on the new BC album, I'm thinking, hmmmm "Sting
Me," not bad, "Remedy," great!, then.... then the CD becomes a $12
cd-single. Real dissapointing second effort from that band.

I'm gonna have to get the 4H's first CD now. I recall there was
some "hit" off of it (well, 'BCN played one), but I just for the life

Just heard some bad news about the band. The singer, Frankie, got into
a bad motorcycle accident and their tour has been put on hold until he
    fully recovers.

Tidbit: after their first drummer, Dimwit, died from a heroin overdose,
the band enlisted Dimwit's brother for the new album. Apparently, he
couldn't take the pressure and had a nervous breakdown. He previously
played drums for Danzig. Their new drummer, who played all the tracks
on the new album, was in Kim Mitchell's band.
