The 1991 Music Video Awards brought to you by MTV is on tomorrow night
(September 5). I don't know what time its on, probably 8:00.. ?
Metallica has just been added to the bill, so thats one reason to watch
it! I think Guns n' Roses will also be performing..
I agree with you 'Pril! The hype is driving me crazy too! They do
this kinda crap all the time though..

RE: 786.5
That was the Second annual Rock Awards, and to tell you the truth,
they were so badly put together, I would've rather watched Yo MTV
craps. So thats just a hint of how bad this show was.
As for the hype, It really is bad.... Every other hour there is a MUSIC
AWARD SPOTLIGHT show... **BFD**, and for a month or 2 after the Award
show there will be REWIND shows, which include clips from the
ceremony...
jeez can't they just leave well enough alone....

Any bets on what the H_M video winner will be? I'd put $100 on
"Silent Lucidity", because that's the song all the teeny-boppers
love.
It should be "Uncle Tom's Cabin" or "You Could Be Mine", but both
will lose because they're the best ones of the bunch. That's a
warped way of reasoning it out, but that's the way it'll go.

Just a tidbit of prediction here... Queensryche is going to win BIG at
the awards this year...
This is something short of a guarntee, but I bet QR wins every award
they're nominated For... do you weant to know why, because the viewers
choice award usually dictates who wins the major awards and right now
QUEENSRYCHE is blowing everyone away, with over 40% of the votes, the
second place group is REM with 22%.... Guess who won....

I don't have the listing of all the winners but here's a few
things that stuck out in my mind.
EXTREMELY unorganized. Arsenio didn't know when they were coming
back from commercials etc.
Queensryche and Don Henley had the best performances. Prince
should have gotten the "let's see how much we can get away with"
award for his act. The 'dancers' hardly had anything on!
Poison, interestingly enough, did "Talk Dirty To Me" for their
performance rather than something more recent....and CC dyed
his hair HOT PINK! Paula Abdul's new song bites the big one.
Some chick from Jane's Addiction (I thought they were all guys)
was so drunk she couldn't talk straight. It's a good thing
that C&C Music Factory's Velma Davis can sing well and is
pretty, cuz she isn't very intelligent. At least not from
what I heard of her 'thank you' speeches. REM won 6 or 7 awards.
Chris Isaak won three. George Michael looked like a geek with
all his hair hacked off (I still like his music though). Bon Jovi
looked good and dedicated their award to the fans and the producer
of the vids Ron (?) Isham. Downtown Julie Brown's outfit couldn't
have POSSIBLY been any shorter....nor could Cher's, who by the
way now has red hair.
I think that sums it up.
Oh and Steven Tyler presented the first award with Linda Hamilton
so he came on stage dressed in her T2 outfit.

Prince ROOOLZ!!! He is always one step ahead of everyone else!

That's cuz all their most recent stuff really blows as opposed t
kinda blows!

She can sing *ok*, but she isn't as good as the woman who sang on the
album (the chick from the Weather Girls!)!

Steven up to his old tricks. Years ago, I knew people who were really

at a birthday party for Brad Whitford, Steven knew Carly Simon was
going to be there, so he came to the party in drag and looked just like

786.14 | My thoughts ... | RAVEN1::JERRYWHITE | Here's a quarter ... | Fri Sep 06 1991 11:07 | 47 |
| Let's see ... my reviews ... 8^)
GENERAL: Arsenio's a waste of time, and they gave him an award for it ! I
was glad to see Pee Wee Herman kick things off. Pee Wee's first line was,
"heard any good jokes lateley ?". It was great. Cher was a knockout -
Pauley Shore was a geek - Cyndi Crawford is WAY overrated - so is Linda
Hamilton. Now for the live performance reviews ...
VAN HALEN: I like these guys anyway, so I knew I'd go for their show.
Naturally they did `Poundcake', but they did it to the letter. They were
the very 1st band so the sound was primo.
POISON: These guys were pathetic. CC was hitting one sour note after
another, pink hair and all. Stepped on his guitar cord and snatched it out
of his guitar at one point. When they finished with `Talk Dirty To Me',
Brett said, `... it ain't perfect, but it's rock and roll ...'. No sh*t !
GUNS 'N ROSES: `Live And Let Die' ? Puuuhleeeze ... they butchered an
already way-lame tune. Axle was sporting a kilt and a flannel shirt -
very cute.
DON HENLEY: A class act from cover to cover. He did `The Heart Of The
Matter" .... very VERY good performance.
PRINCE: He took it to the limit for sure. But I gotta give credit where
it's due - the man's a genius, with more creativity in one of hist farts
than the rest of the performers could muster in a lifetime. I must admit,
seeing his ass cheeks falling out of his pants did nothing for me ... 8^)
PAULA ABDUL: She's getting chubby again ... the new tune didn't do much for
me.
MARIAH CAREY: I missed this spot (dammit !).
CC MUSIC FACTORY: Velma's a doll - other than that, nothing new.
LL COOL J: Give me my gun ...
QUEENSRYCHE: Da boys done good. Class, all the way. Arsenio screwed up
trying to say `Silent Lucidity' ... I'll lay off the racial slurrs ...
METALLICA: The intro to `Sandman' was taped, but they slammed it out
pretty good. Hetfeild sounded GREAT ... the vocal harmonies were kinda
shakey though ...

Well, as far as my two cents, I missed the whole thing.
Unfortunately I live on the edge of the observable universe and have no
cable. To tell you the truth, I really don't miss that uncontrolled
monopolizer of music video. I watched it for the first time in two
years when I was in Florida this past July and was appalled by how much
rap they played (I was impressed with "Liquid TV").
In any case, I don't miss it, don't care about the phony awards
they give out. I just spent my night listening to my latest batch of

Van Halen, Poison, Mariah Carey, C&C Music Factory - missed them (wanted to

GUNS 'N ROSES: I thought this was ok, nothing great. Axle looked totally
stupid in his kilt. Song was pretty good, fairly normal cover
of it really.....
DON HENLEY: I agree with Scary - class act all teh way! `The Heart Of The
Matter" is just an awesome song, and that acoustic version was
just beautiful!
PRINCE: I liked this! I think its one of Price's best songs since the 'Purple
Rain' days. And him getting back to sex as a main theme is cool to
see - that's where he's best! The live performance was basically the
same look as the video - HOT! ("Twenty-three positions in a one-night

PAULA ABDUL: The new song really s*cked! Totally disappointed me....
LL COOL J: Not very good, they shoulda had more controversial rappers on, like
NWA or Pulbic Enemy....
QUEENSRYCHE: Sounded good, but it was a pretty boring performance. No soul or
anything to it, just going through the motions.

Probably matched the length of Mariah Carey's from what I

one point - suffice it to say it's a good thing she had
matching gold underwear on. Yeuck!
RE: CC dying his hair hot pink
hee hee... Again, JR on ZOU this morning summed it up pretty
good. "He looked like a Wishkin!" Y'know, those little dolls
with all the hair. If you shook 'em enough the hair would
stand on end and the eyes would bulge out. I figured that
maybe he was related to Cyndi Lauper somewhere along the
way. (; ...or maybe he's just wishing to come back as her. (8
>Pauley Shore was a geek - Cyndi Crawford is WAY overrated
Cindy Crawford is WAY overrated AND is a geek. She looked
like someone punched her in the eye and forced her to look

I likes CC's hair!! Looks sorta like mine!! It washes out after a few

I said, after a band makes it big like they have, they can afford *not*

Metallica sounded cool. I didn't like the part where they dubbed in
the part "Now I lay me down to sleep..." sounded LAME-O IMO. I likes
the way the guitarist (WTF IS his name anyway?? I always get them
mixed up) kept tossing that head around! Looked AWESOME! They RULE.
REM SUX!
Van Halen kicked some major butt. I liked the power drill Eddie used.
Thought it ruled! I especially liked the interview before the show
with Sammy. I freaked when he said he took a pay cut to join VH...
STEPHEN TYLER RULES!~ I love that guys attitude!! Enough said there.
Queensryche was awesome, but what else did you expect?? They were the
best act of the whole show! Can't believe they only won ONE award??
At leas tit was the viewer's choice!
Paula Abdul's dancers deserved an award for lifting her fat jug-butt off

Maria Carey is gaining my respect. I could tell it was kinda hard for
her to hit the "high" notes. I think Arsenio has a crush on her...
EMF is cool. The scene over in England looked more happnin' than over

My .02 cents.. I only watched it till 11:15 or so.. I couldn't make
it any longer than that, and missed it this weekend!
Van Halen has to stop dressing for their stage outfits at the
Salvation Army!! Sammy wears clothes my dad would wear to the beach!
Paula Abdul was fat!! Even her face looked chubby, like she had
recently gained weight.
Poisen bit!
Mariah Carey was cool.
REM's video "Losing My Religion" is the balls, IMHO. I voted for it...
C&C Music Factory was good, but not great. JJ, I agree, Zelma does
sound like a lamebrain. Actually, none of them sounded filled with
intelligence that night!
Was (not Was)... was.. cool!
Arsenio Hall did an OK job.. I agree, time for a new host!

I didn't see anything wrong with the way they were dressed.
With the likes of Madonna dressing the way she does and
other bands dressing unmatched on PURPOSE, I thought VH
looked like a rock band...

Subject: Live performances showcased at MTV awards

Priority: major
LOS ANGELES (UPI ) -- Alternative rock group R.E.M., rocker Chris
Isaak and the techno-pop C+C Music Factory took top honors at an 8th
annual MTV Video Music Awards Thursday night that featured some rare
live performances.
R.E.M. won in six of its nine nominated categories, including video
of the year for ``Losing My Religion.'' Isaak took three awards and C+C
Music Factory won two.
``We'd like to thank the fans from 12 years back all the way to
today,'' said R.E.M.'s lead singer Michael Stipe, who served as a
walking billboard throughout the night, changing T-shirts that offered
political opinions on everything from abortion to gun control.
Isaak's sexually provocative video ``The Wicked Game,'' took top
honors for best male video, cinematography and best video for a film for
the Nicholas Cage movie, ``Wild at Heart.''
Janet Jackson's ``Love Will Never Do Without You'' was named best
female video, beating a bizarre list of nominees, ranging from Christian
singer Amy Grant to Madonna's masturbation-tainted ``Like A Virgin.''
Aerosmith was named best metal-hard rock video for ``The Other Side.''
Backstage, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler commented on the group's
longevity, saying, ``I don't take things too seriously. I take the music
seriously and the albums seriously, but everything else I let roll off
me a little bit. You have to.''
Best rap video went to LL Cool J for ``Momma Said, Knock You Out.''
He praised MTV, which virtually ignored black artists during its
early years, as a medium that crosses all ``color boundaries.''
``I don't know what the definition of black music is. I just play
what comes from my heart,'' he said, sporting his trademark black patent
leather rain hat and heavy gold jewelry.
Jane's Addiction's ``Been Caught Stealing'' beat out R.E.M. for best
alternative video, while Madonna's ``Immaculate Collection'' was named
best long-form music video.
Other winners included the group Faith No More for special effects
and Jesus Jones for best new artist.
There was an unlikely roster of presenters from super model Cindy
Crawford to actor-director Dennis Hopper, whose tuxedo looked wildly out
of place in the crowd of young rockers, rappers and video mavens.
Prince, who almost never ventures out in public, performed ``Get Off,
'' which served as the evening's grand finale. An elaborate set featured
a recreation of Dante's inferno, complete with dancing flames and
sweating, scantily-clad slaves.
R.E.M.'s ``Losing my Religion'' from its ``Out of Time'' album won
three awards, including best breakthrough video, best group and best
direction.
C + C Music Factory, an ensemble of singers and dancers led by rapper
Freedom Williams and singer Zelma Davis, won awards for best dance video
and choreography for the song ``Gonna Make You Sweat,'' a pulsating
number combining rap, rock and house music.
Crossover rock group Jane's Addiction beat out R.E.M. for best
alternative video, a category won last year by Sinead O'Connor.
The evening's biggest surprise came when Paul Reubens took the stage
in character as Pee Wee Herman following the opening credits. Reubens,
arrested for indecent exposure at a Florida movie theater, was treated
to a standing ovation.
Reubens appeared moved but then quipped, ``Heard any good jokes
lately?'' an apparent reference to the spate of Pee Wee jokes that
spread across the country following his arrest.
The appearance was sanctioned by MTV executives.
Unlike most award shows, trophy presentations took a backseat to
entertainment. A dozen performers took the stage at the Universal
Ampitheater, including Poison, Paula Abdul, C+C Music Factory and Van
Halen, which made its first live televised appearance.
Guns N' Roses performed live via satellite from London.
Live performances have become the acid-test for many artists since
last year's lip-synching Milli Vanilli scandal, a means of distilling
who is real and who was manufactured on the mixing board.
Arsenio Hall was the emcee of the show, which was broadcast to more
than 100 countries.
The hardest-working man in show business now that he's out of prison,
James Brown, was among a list of presenter that included Cher and Billy
Idol.
MC Hammer, who won two MTV Video Music Awards last year, presented
the Viewers Choice Award to Queensryche.
For comic relief, ``Saturday Night Live'' basement-dwelling
adolescent characters Wayne and Garth did a routine, as did the metal
band spoof, Spinal Tap.
Awards in 22 artistic and technical categories were handed out during
the three-hour show, broadcast to 140 affiliates as far-flung as Asia,
Europe, South America and Australia.
Up for best video of the year with R.E.M. were Chris Isaak for
``Wicked Game,'' Queensryche for ``Silent Lucidity,'' the Divinyls for
``I Touch Myself,'' Deee-Lite for ``Groove is in the Heart'' and C+C
Music Factory with ``Gonna Make You Sweat.''
