766.2 | I need more music GIFs | HAVASU::HEISER | Episcopal=PepsiCola spelled sideways | Mon Jun 10 1991 19:52 | 10 |
| I've asked about some of these on Usenet without luck. I'd love to
have some Ibanez RG550 shots or a Marshall JCM900 stack. If I had a
color scanner, I'd scan in all the cool pics from the Marshall
calendar.
Anyway, I have some bikini bimbos (;-)) in DDIF, some really cool GIFs
of a ZR1, Space Shuttle shots, Yoda, etc. If you send me mail, I'll
send you a location.

Buy me a Sharp JX-450 color scanner and I'll take care of all of us!
;-) It has 24 bit output and will work nicely with my 24 plane
Firefox.
Re: Coop
Didn't you say you had "Master of Puppets"? I put in a request for
some on "alt.binaries.pictures.d" and a couple of the rock newsgroups.
I had one response that offered me album covers of Rush's "Caress of
Steel" and Maiden's "Piece of Mind". As soon as we can figure out how
to mail them from a Sun to my Firefox, I'll make them available. What
I have available (most are from Coop):
AFTERBURNER.GIF;1 - ZZ Top album
BEATLES.GIF;3 - Let it Be era collage
BLUES.GIF;4 - man playing the sax
MTVLOGO.GIF;3 - I'll give you 3 guesses
PFLOYD0.GIF;3 - Dark Side of the Moon
PFLOYD1.GIF;3 - some pyramid design
REM_OOTCOVER.GIF;1 - REM's latest album cover
ROCK1.GIF;1 - band logo collage: Captain Beyond, Tangerine
Dream, Jimi Hendrix
ROCK2.GIF;3 - band logo collage: Iron Butterfly, Black Sabbath,
Led Zepplin, Spirit, Doors
ROCK3.GIF;3 - band logo collage: Jefferson Airplane, Greatful

ROCK4.GIF;3 - band logo collage: Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd

| Anyone know how to convert IMG files to GIF? I've managed to convert
them to DDIF, but you need the PUTIMAGE tool to put DDIF's in your root
and pause windows.
I've scanned in the Marshall calendar and have the April JCM900 stack
in my root window now ;-) If you have PUTIMAGE and want the DDIFs,
send me mail. Beware, these are B&W, not grayscale (MD300 scanner
output). If anyone has a color scanner, talk to me offline!
Here are the descriptions of the Marshall JCM900 "Around the World"
calendar:
Jan - Chateau Frontenac, Quebec, Canada; 1 full stack and 2 stacks
Feb - Sydney Opera House, Australia; 1 full MV stack
Mar - Berlin Wall, Germany; 1 full MV stack
Apr - Johann Strauss statue, Vienna, Austria; 1 full stack with cord
hooked up to violin on statue. One of my favorites!
May - KCR Clocktower, Hong Kong; 1 full stack
Jun - 2 Grenadier Guards, London, Great Britain; 1 full DR stack
Jul - New York Skyline, USA; Bluesbreaker reissue combo
Aug - Campo De Criptana, Spain; 1 full DR stack
Sep - The Parthenon, Greece; 1 DR stack. Another favorite!
Oct - The Cathedral of Milan, Italy; 1 DR stack
Nov - collage of famous Japanese sites (i.e., Mt. Fuji, statues, etc.)
and JCM900 stacks and combos.
Dec - The Little Mermaid, Denmark; 3 DR full stacks surround the statue

| Yes send mail to me. Keep in mind, these won't do you any good without
a workstation or X terminal.
Speaking of which, I recall some of you out there are X terminal and
VAX II GPX users. I've come across a product that could help you
immensely. It's a DEC product called EWS and is a VAXELN (realtime
VMS) server for the above hardware.
It basically turns your VAX II GPX into a X terminal. I've installed
it on all of ours in PNO and TFO. These suckers are almost as fast as
my Firefox now! Much faster than they were originally designed to be!

766.90 | GIF primer | HAVASU::HEISER | step into my groove | Mon Sep 09 1991 16:23 | 55 |
| Okay, here's a GIF primer for you neophytes ;-)
You basically have 2 products to use: XGIF and XV. XV is the successor
to XGIF and will support 24 plane systems (actually dithers the image
down to 8 planes, but at least it still works).
For XGIF, copy these images to your account:
HAVASU::USER2:[XGIF]XGIF.EXE
HAVASU::USER2:[XGIFROOT]XGIFROOT.EXE
For XV, copy this image:
HAVASU::USER2:[XV]XV.EXE
If you're into sources and have the disk space, there's an XV.SAV
saveset in there. I also have sources for the XGIF stuff.
To use these tools, you need to define them as a foreign symbol. If you
don't know how to do that, put these in your LOGIN.COM
$ XGIF :== $your_disk:[your_directory]XGIF
$ XGIFROOT :== $your_disk:[your_directory]XGIFROOT
***OR***
$ XV :== $your_disk:[your_directory]XGIFROOT
Then to display your GIF in the pause window:
$ XGIF filename.GIF -p
For the root window:
$ XGIFROOT filename.GIF
The XGIF tool will display (a lot faster and cleaner than UTOX) by just
typing:
$ XGIF filename.GIF
XV doesn't support the pause window since that is a DEC specific
feature and the author wrote it on a Unix machine at the University of
PA. However, it does the root window, and also has a great menu, as
well as being able to do gamma adjustments, picture enlargements, etc.
The root window command for XV would be:
$ XV -root -max -quit filename.GIF
If you omit the -max it puts multiple copies of the GIF until the
display is full (collage effect).
I'm still working out getting XV to display on the login screen
(instead of DEC logo). If anyone has this working, send me mail.
hope this helps,
Mike

| Remember not to flood the anonymous FTP access points with too many
requests. Only take a few gifs at a time. It costs the companies that
set this up money when you access their network site, and if it gets
out of hand, they'll have to shut it down.
I heard of one place that got over $5000 in network access charges from
anonymous FTP access because people weren't considerate about this.
Most places also appreciate it if you set up your FTP access to
off-business-hours, like late at night as well.

Well, yeah, JPEG is the image compression scheme from Hell. It's hellish
enough that some people have built custom hardware to handle it.
C-Cubed and Chips and Technologies both have JPEG on a chip.
When MPEG hardware comes out you'll be able to compress and store
color video at 30 frames per second.
Then you'll need a bigger disk. :-)

I agree that if you've got the disk space and not muc of a CPU then
you should avoid JPEG. The only advantage to JPEG is that it compresses
the hell out of images. It is compute intensive.
Image quality has little to do with it, even though JPEG is a "lossy"**
compression scheme. 99% of the image quality problems come from the
bozo running the scanner.
** lossy: You lose a small amount of information. If you start with an
original image in file 1, JPEG compress it into file 2 and then JPEG
uncompress file 2 into file 3, then file 3 will not be identical to
the original file 1. The differences are usually to small to notice
with the naked eye at normal viewing distance, but can cause problems
in scientific analysis.

Some look better than others. It would probably
be helpful to note the realy cool ones.
COMICF2 looks like it would be something drawn in that cartoon
magazine Heavy Metal.
SEIZMIC1 looks just like a photo from an eletron scanning microscope
FIREBAL2 looks like a hollow burning planet that's just about to explode
FIREBAL1 is a close up view of the same planet
FIREBAL3 looks like a gleaming sun with a sheer metallic surface
FIREBAL4 is about the same as FIREBAL1
PLANET-X red alien world
PRICKLY1 blue alien world
BADTRIP This is one of the few that's random. In the center is
something that looks like the 'rock' is doing a "Pink Floyd
The Wall Scream". Above that it looks like the rock is
being torn apart to reveal some kind of webbing underneath.
In the bottom right there's actually a face! Looking out
from the rock in the southeast direction. It's about 3/4
inch long and it's just a profile, but it's definately
there, and by pure random coincidence.
Remember, none of these are photographs and some took 8 hours or more to
calculate.

| With some hesitation, I'm making my repository world available. The only
limitation is the copy times. You can copy any time except for 10am-8pm
EST. This is a standalone workstation and I won't tolerate the
performance hit from multiple network copy requests. I will rudely
disconnect (without notice) any network links created during those hours.
If there are too many violations during those hours, I will take them
offline.
Having said that, the repository that this group would be interested in
is located at FRETZ::SCANS:[MUSIC]. There are other directories
available if you're so inclined.
regards,
Mike

I believe there is a conversion to go to a sixel file, but I
don't know where to find it or anything about it, for that
matter.

| If I recall, one of the formats that XV will convert to is PostScript.
I think the CDA Viewer application will read that and probably convert
to something that your terminal can display. Be aware, though, that
the quality of the PostScript version for most pictures is extremely
poor.
