They where all part of the 70's and VERY influencial for rock bands
today!
I think it was the last half of the sixties and the first half of the
seventies.
There was also another wave of rock that was the center of what rock
bands look like and sound like today......Around 1983-4 with the likes
of Motley Crue,Ratt,Quiet Riot,Dokken..etc.
At least that's what *I* think.

the '70s was the weakest of the 4. I was surprised when I heard it

In all honesty, the 60's were far from boring. You had Jimi
Hendrix, Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter, The Allman Brothers,
Pat Travers (Although he may have been earyly 70's), Lou

Purple, Hendrix, Trower, Montrose, Boston, Kiss, Styx, Skynyrd, Mother's
Finest, Blue Oyster Cult, Grand Funk ... whew, there was some real
power there ! That was the lo-tech era. I've you noticed, as the
years went by and the technology improved, many of these groups fell
off the boat - betrayed their roots, and lost it.

An incredible amount of different metal genres emerged. Metal even

760.8 | Does this make a decade? | HLDG00::SUTHERLAND | Burns like a buzzsaw blade | Wed May 15 1991 08:36 | 34 |
| I don't think that there is a particular decade that can be marked as
the 'best decade'. Rather I think small periods during each decade,
all put together would be more appropriate:
Late 50s (help) Elvis Presley and the emergence of black performers
1968-69 - Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple
all with a different message, all influential.
1973-74 - Emergence of bands like Uriah Heep, Sweet, Kiss, Thin
Lizzy, etc.
1977-78 - Aeorsmith, AC/DC etc.
1981-83 - NWOBHM, Iron Maiden in particular.
1984-86 - The Thrash/Speed genres, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer,
etc, real HM is here.
1989-90 - The new wave - Jane's Addiction, Faith No More, Extreme,
Scatterbrain, Dread Zeppelin (the innovators)
Remember that every good period also included crap! Poseur rock such
as Bon-Jovi and Warrant also arrived in the mid 80's. The Rolling
Stones thrived in the mid 70s. And so on. My list is not
comprehensive, I have even missed some of my own favourite bands out
(Queensryche, Scorpions, etc) because I cannot point to the exact date
they were formed. Also some of the bands mentioned were not
necessarilly formed during the periods I associate them with, but this
is the period I remember them best for.

The 50's.
People don't realize what Buddy Holly did to influence many other
great performers - he was way ahead of his time. I would even go so
far as to pinpoint him as the greatest rocking roller ever lived,
with the most influence!! Also, being one of the first, if not the
first white band to play the Apollo in New York, they crossed the rigid
color barrier that was around back then.
Of course, there was also Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Jerry Lee
Lewis.
Elvis was just a glorified poseur! 8*) IMHO.

I have pretty negative feelings about the `DEATH METAL' bands as
I don't see the point, but that is an opinion.
I hope that the 90's will be the best decade, but that depends on
if people are infulenced by their own thoughts on music or follow
whatever the record companies, fads, say is good.

My earlier reply was basically stating that the 60's weren't

The best decade for rock is questionable but...
The best decade for METAL has to be the 80's. Anyone that disagree's is
over the edge!
1980 - Intro of Iron Maiden
1981 - Ozzy and Randy Rhoads, Slayer
1982 - Exodus,
1983 - Metallica
1984 - Anthrax
1985 - Megadeth
1986 - Metallica without Burton
1987 - Testament, Helloween, Flotsam and Jetsam begin to break thru
1988 - The first speed metal band goes double platnum
1989 - a tsunami of new thrash metal comes into view
plus others that began in the 70's also helped te 80's (i.e. Priest,
and sabbath and the like)

is stretching my memory back along way) late 1982.Certainly not before
that. Bonded by Blood the album came out in 1984,though i dunno when
Exodus did their first demo.(I haven`t heard it).
As for "the band who started thrash",surely that has to go to Venom
whose "Welcome To Hell" and "Black Metal" albums came out in 1982.
Though personally speaking,i reckon it was a little known Belgium band
called Acid whose 1981 album ("Maniac?") could be called thrash.

| Other considered opinion has it that Motorhead were the "godfathers of thrash"
beginning with their Ace of Spades album.
But I'm not sure this is worth discussion. Thrash was bound to happen as
people started to experiment and expand on existing styles. I reckon that
no one person/group invented thrash, and that it eveloved through the
experiments of a number of different people of like minds.
Enough philosophy for this time in the morning...
Best decade in rock? As someone way back says, it depends which type of
rock you mean. I'd agree that for modern metal it has to be the '80s.
For the originators of this musical form, you can't tie it down to a specific
decade as it developed during the late '60s and early '70s (Hendrix,
Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbatch, et al).
Keef.
