| On Paul McCarron's recommendation, I picked up an older Primus release
called "Suck On This" today. It's a live recording done back in '89
apparently between the Frizzle Fry album and Sailing the Seas of Cheese
(I haven't heard either of these).
It's punk/funk/rock kind of music mixture. I guess it probably fits
more under the "alternative" classification then "metal" but it's real
interesting! The bass playing is absolutely incredible!
Hey Paul, you said a few notes back that they needed a full time
singer? Why? I think they sound fine the way they are.

a weird frequency range that nothing else is playing it so it sticks

His name's Larry LaLonde (not sure of the spelling on the last name).
I don't remember the name of the death band he played with, but

My consistant advice on the place to start with Primus is their first
album, "Suck On This". It's live, it's raw, and it captures the
essence of the band.

Well..I also happen to love King Crimson (all incarnations). I still
think "Seas of Cheese" blows compared to the other Primus albums.
But..it's still an interesting album. I just wouldn't start my tour of
the band with that one. I haven't heard "Pork Soda" (their most
recent) in it's entirity, but what I've heard sounds quite a bit
better. (Although it'd be hard to live without "Jerry Is A Racecar

Well, I just picked up my first. Seemed to be strong for and against
on "Sailing the Seas Of Chese", but I just felt like getting that one
first for some reason.
I *really* like this!!!!
First off, I'm surprised there's guys doin' stuff like this and its
getting bought - not mainstream at all. I will admit, it takes a few
solid listens to get in the groove. I'm like that mostly anyway with
any new stuff. The first listen I was like "Wow, that was wierd, I
wonder if I liked it?" :^) By the third time, I realized I was
wicked looking forward to coming home and slapping this on.
I have to say I really do see a similarity between them and King
Crimson. Not the lyrics or the bass so much (they are a bass-y band,
aren't they), but the guitar is often very "Larks Tounge - Part 2-ish"
or "Red"ish, that "Starless" period of Fripp's playing.
A great buy!

"Frizzle Fry" for my second CD. That's it - these guys are (were?)

though, which is cool -- Larry LaLonde is a riot.
I'll have to get "Pork Soda" next. In deference to Greg's acclaim, I
should probably pick up "Suck On This," but I gotta be frank -- I usually
*can't stand* live albums by any group, even my favorites. Maybe 2
or three Live albums have been able to rise above the bad recording,
compressed production, or just lamer versions of tunes such that I
was glad I bought them (Skynrnd's was great and B..C.'s "On Your Feet
Or On Your Knees" are examples of good ones).
Les likes fishing themes, I take it... :^)

| Sean,
Remember that "Suck On This" was their FIRST album. It's not lame
versions of stuff they'd released before, these are the original
versions of these songs. It's got stuff from Frizzle Fry and Seas Of
Cheese and some other stuff. These guys are great in concert and this
album really captures it, the essence of the band.
Some bands are great live, and some are great in the studio, some are
both. Personally, I think Primus is better live, but that's just my
personal opinion.

Oh I agree 100%! And I believe that Primus are better live. The
question I have to ask is - Is there "betterness" captured on CD?
For example: way back when VCR's first became popular, this guy
had a bootleg copy of "Star Wars." It was an awful quality bootleg.
For him, it didn't matter - he HAD a great movie and nobody else did.
For me, watching the great movie was ruined by the poor quality of the
recording.
Likewise, there are a lot of bands I think are great live but whose
greatness is overruled by the crappy way their live albums were recorded.
I just rarely like the quality of live CD's. No knock on them, and I'll
give this a try, but its just my experience.

| I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I really like that
album. I think it really does do them justice. Naturally, your milage
may vary. Check it out!
FWIW, I'm not someone who goes around raving about live albums all the
time. I enjoy a lot of them, but I don't generally recommend them,
especially over studio work, except to true fans because a lot of time
the music suffers. There are exceptions, like the old REO Speedwagon.
Their studio albums (mid 70s) were TOTAL yawners, but their live album
had a lot of energy and sounded good. Deep Purple's Made in Japan is a
classic.

Primus. Cool.
MTv runs some cool videos in the wee weekend hours, and this
Saturday, they featured Primus. They interviewed Les, and
played some great videos he selected.
My personal fave is that song from Pork Soda, Mr... oh,
damn, Mr. K(something). The video is totally effed up, and
I mean that in the best possible way. (There's Les in a
pig suit playing an upright bass as all manner of circus
character carry on in the background.) If anyone ever sees
a Primus video collection in their travels, particularly
if that video is on it, please point me toward it.
There's a new album coming out soon (or maybe it's already
out... I'll be scoping out the record stores).
Primus is cool.

I thought I heard a new song by Primus ("Deeper and deeper?", something
"deep?") on WBCN, but hadn't heard of a new CD, and plus I thought
Sausage was Les's new band - I guess it's just his side project (how
is this CD, by the way???).
Anyway, the song cranked.
I've got everything but "Suck On This" (I'm *getting* it - PROMISE!),
and really really like these guys.

I'm going too.... although the aud in Worcester is a sh***y place
to see a show (horrible sound). Last show I saw there was the
_first_ rock concert I ever went to... Marc Bolan and T-Rex
with some unknown Canadian band called "Rush" as the opening
act. Rush blew T-Rex off the stage, of course.
And the first act on was a band called "Albatross", and in today's
"what goes around, comes around" entry, it's very likely the
lead singer of Albatross will be the front-man of "Liquid
Sanctuary". Oh sorry, Primus...
