540.0. "Contraband" by COMET::FRISBYA () Tue Apr 09 1991 11:55

There was something quite interesting on the HBB last weekend...

A new band has formed from misfits of other bands..CONTRABAND.

    The member are:
    Richard Black-Shark Island---Lead Singer.
    Tracii Guns-L.A. Guns--------Lead Guitar.
    Micheal Shenker-MSG----------Lead and Rythym Guitar.
    Share Pederson-Vixon---------Bass Guitar.
    Bobby Blotzer-Ratt-----------Drums.

They put an album out of covers or music other people wrote.
Their first single is "LONG WAY FROM MEMPHIS"
Which they also have a video for it.

                             Interesting.....

The first single that Contraband will release is:

ALL THE WAY FROM MEMPHIS

Written by Ian Hunter, it first appeared on the classic Mott the Hoople
LP of 1973 "Mott". At that time Hunter was frontman for the band.

Anyway, while I'm here, is there any other notes on Schenker or his old band UFO?

I caught the Contraband interview on MTV last week (actually it was
Schenker and Blotzer) and they played the "All the Way from Memphis"
clip. Altogether a nice remake. Haven't heard anything else from the
release, but it looks like it's more promising than some of the
previous super-group/one-shot projects. Schenker and Guns are a weird
combo for dual guitarists, but it seems from the video like they pull
it off! I have to admit right off that Schenker is one of my all-time
biggest guitar influences. He's extremely melodic and fluid. His tone
is one the most axemen would kill for (I know Buck, it's a Marshall!)
From what I understand most of this release it gonna be covers with
a few originals mixed in - I think I'm gonna pick this up when I find
    it.
A couple of super-group/guitar hero groups that didn't sit well with
    me:

The Firm - didn't live up to their potential
(Paul Rodgers new band, the Law,
    				    SUX 2)

GTR - Steve Howe (How can you be so
    				   inconsistent!) Hackett hacks on GTR!

Since there is no topic yet, I'll start one. I bought the CD
last weekend. Its got some intresting tunes on it. There are a
couple of ballads on there that I'm not too crazy about but for
the most part it really rocks.
I bought it mostly because I've always been a fan of MS. For all
of you fans of his, this is a must for you he plays exellent as
usual. I like all the covers on the CD also. There is a great cover
from Bowie's Spiders From Mars album, Mott The Hoople's All The Way
From Memphis, and another old rock n' roll tune that I believe was
    also covered by Stray Cats.
I must admit I don't know too much about the other members of the
band, I know who they are but not alot about the groups they are
from. They make a very tight and great sounding straight forward
rock and roll band. I give it a thumbs up.
