494.0. "Free" by PLAYER::SUTHERLAND (Middle-aged Mutant Headbanger at large) Thu Feb 28 1991 06:16

    I was surprised that there was no topic for Free in this conference.
    Well not really as I didn't at first consider them to be HM. It is
    only after the recent revival of the classic 'All Right Now' that I had
    to change my mind! The rythm and beat of this tune is a lot heavier
    than I remembered. Also Kerraang (sp?) gave their greatest hits album
    5 Ks (thanks Flip for your usual great work), so who am I to disagree!

    I used to work with a guy (Julian Mapleston) who claimed to have played
    with Free in the far and distant past (keyboards).

    My personal Free fav was 'Wishing Well'.

    I'm kinda burned out on "Alright Now", mainly 'cuz I've been covering
    that tune in almost EVERY band I've been in since it originally came
    out. And to be honest, I don't think I've every heard anything else by
    them ... what's their other stuff compare to ?

    Scary
494.2Would like to hear some more!PLAYER::SUTHERLANDMiddle-aged Mutant Headbanger at largeThu Feb 28 1991 07:5213
    Re Scary, its a bit difficult to say what they compare too! Mainly
    because it is so long ago since I heard any of their other stuff.
    Even humming a tune or two in my head doesn't help, because it si
    difficult to copy the rythm and feel of it. I suppose that they would
    compare favaourably with Poison material. Don't forget that this was
    sixties/seventies so it was pretty heavy for the time. But I am no
    expert on this band, so if someone else out there knows more (yes I
    know I am one of the oldest around here (^8*) then let us know!

    Definitely an interesting bit of rock history this band!

    Hey Scary,

    Don't forget to tell everyone that this is the band that Bad Company
    came from!

    I agree "Wishing Well" is a GREAT tune and has been covered by
    Blackfoot and Gary Moore among others.

494.4Nothin to write home about.RAVEN1::KROBINSONI'm just a media trained parasite.Sun Mar 03 1991 13:125
     I use to have the Best of Free album. There were more just average
    sort of songs than actual good ones on the album. I didn't think it was
    nothing to get worked up about.
    			The KER (who still likes alright now)

    Hi Ken, how about a list of the songs you liked then. I wonder why
    Keraang (how do you spell it?) gave it 5 Ks then.

    Ga-ZAZ who reads Metal Hammer anyway.

494.6I'll check it out tonight.RAVEN1::KROBINSONI'm just a media trained parasite.Thu Mar 07 1991 11:525
      GaZaZ, I'll have to go home and check it out again. It has been a
    long time since I listened to it because my sister spilled a coke on
    one side of the album. Coke and vinyl don't get along together well.

    Free were one of the seminal bands to emerge out of the British blues
    boom at the end of the sixties. Paul Rogers (later of Bad Company, The
    Firm - with Jimmy Page and now The Law) is probably the finest rock
    vocalist ever and with the tragic genius of Paul Kossoff on guitar
    combined to create some superb music.
