480.7 | REZ is great live! | UPWARD::HEISER | Smaq Iraq | Tue Feb 05 1991 18:02 | 20 |
| I've witnessed some startling contrasts in guitar rigs this weekend.
Friday night's REZ concert was a real tribute to Marshall! Both the
lead and rhythm players used JCM 800 heads. The rhythm player is
strictly a Les Paul straight into the JCM 800. No effects! He gets
such a great sound too! The lead player uses a strat styled Jackson
into the JCM 800. He had 2 of those Boss cases that hold 6 effects pedals
each. There was a delay and a delay dimension pedal in there + at
least 2 each of their compressor/sustainor, noise surpressor, and of
course the power supply. Also a great sound! Nice and raw! he only
used 1 other guitar, for 1 song. A beautiful blonde finished Gibson
doubleneck with the vine like inlays. Real vintage looking!
Bottomline: so simple, but AWESOME!
Then a go to Coop's house on Sunday to play with the MAJOR MIDI RACK
PUKE. The technology involved in that rack is quite a contrast! That
rack also sounds great and is really flexible.
Just goes to show there is room for both in this world!

| Jesse, Greg, would you guys know the discography of the early REZ
stuff? I borrowed "Mommy Doesn't Love Daddy Anymore" from a friend and
really liked some of the tunes on it. I hear "Colors" is okay too. I
started buying their stuff in the mid '80s. Here is their discography
since then:

| The only one I have is "Awaiting Your Reply", I think the first one was
untitled (just the band name).
While that album was fairly rockin' that was still back when producers
for Christian labels were taking the edge off all the hard rock bands.
I saw them on the DMZ tour and they'd gotten a lot harder rock sound by
then.

480.1 | REZ rocks Phoenix | PNO::HEISER | welcome to the TONE ZONE | Mon Feb 18 1991 13:18 | 29 |
| Now that I'm back, EXCELLENT concert! The way they've kept their ministry
in focus over the years really makes me happy for bands like them. Glenn
Kaiser also delivered a hard-hitting message afterwards, a great speaker!
In JPUSA, Glen and the drummer John Herrin, are 2 of the 9 pastors in the
community. Wendi also gave her testimony during the concert. If you've
ever heard it, you'll know God has performed a healing miracle in her life!
Off the new album, "Innocent Blood" they did:
Rooster Crow, Altar of Pain (opening number)
The House is on Fire
80,000 Underground
Fiend or Foul
Where Roses Grow (dedicated to our troops)
Right on Time
Bargain
Others:
Quite Enough - Live Bootleg
Silence Screams - Silence Screams
Light/Light - "
You Got Me Rockin' - "
Shadows - Between Heaven and Hell
They also did a couple older songs that I wasn't familiar with, but I'm
told they were from the "Colors" album. The first album I bought from them
was "D.M.Z.". BTW - they cover Eric Clapton's "In the Presence of the
Lord" on that album too.

| As I've said before, REZ has a great heavy rockin sound. I think
they're an excellent band. I've seen them live once back in '85 or so
and they rocked.
Their early material was kind of rock and then they got kind of an
AC/DC kind of sound (which they had live when I saw them). The later
stuff I've heard is a little more finess then that, but is still fairly
heavy, but more like Dokken then AC/DC (not that these are *real* close
comparisons, just a general sound kind of thing, not like a clone band
thing).
(As moderator, I moved some of the discussion on REZ that occurred in
note 53 here, but there is more information on them still in that note.
I chose to leave it there as it was in the context of conversations
that discussed several Christian bands and I wanted to preserve the
flow of those old discussions.)

I finished tabbing out "Souls for Hire" if anyone's interested.

After fooling with it, I found out that the muting sounds more
accurate when you do it with the left hand. Fret the A power chord
with your index finger and mute with your free fingers (middle and
ring).

Gee, do I have some info that should make you guys happy! Rez currently puts
out most of their own stuff on their own (JPUSA's) Grrr Records label. By
writing to them at the address below, you can find their Grrr albums and
available copies of their older albums as well. (I got a catalog/news zine
called "MaGrrrZine" with my last issue of Cornerstone Magazine, which is one
of the best Christian magazines EVER, IMO)
ONE BIG ITEM: BOTH Awaiting Your Reply and Rainbows End have JUST BEEN REISSUED
on cassette and CD on Grrr -- I saw these at C-Stone - THEY EXIST!
For more t-shirts, buttons, bumper stickers, and old albums than any Rez fanatic
will know what to do with, write:

| REZ has received a great review for their new "Civil Rites" album from
CCM. The first 2 paragraphs sum it up for me:
"Over the years, and I mean more years than I would care to admit, REZ
has been a band you could count on. You could count on it evangelical
vision and hard rockin' approach, its concern for those Jesus called
"the least of these" (victims of racism, violence, oppression, and
discrimination), and you could count on well crafted hard rock songs
with often poetic lyrics. You could also count on a lifestyle that
backed up the songs, on the fact that words were supported by real
actions in the real world. All this can be heard on the band's latest
effort, Civil Rites.
Artistically speaking, REZ is at its best (for my two cents worth) when
it leans to the bluesy end of the hard rock equation; when Glenn
Kaiser's distinctive, wailing voice has room to breathe in the mix, and
Stu Heiss' guitars wrap around a searing, heart-rendering melody, as on
"Footprints in the Snow" and "In My Room". But, there's plenty of that
all-too-familiar power-riff crunch rock, a la AC/DC, to please the
band's headbangin' metal music fans on this third album for its own
Grrr label (the band's 12th overall)."
