They are really hard & thrashy; the farthest thing from poseurs.
Couple of tunes caught my attention! They are from Dallas........
They started out in the club scene (that's where I first heard of

Pussy tight, It's pretty cool...........

400.16 | Cowboys from hell | KETJE::VLASIU | | Thu Mar 21 1991 05:16 | 24 |
| I bought Pantera's "Cowboys from hell" and listened it few times. It's on the
second listening that you really enjoy this excellent album.
"Cowboys from hell" is a power metal album, very heavy, with a riff sound close
to that on Metallica's AJFA (but there is no other comparison with Metallica).
The compositions are strong, the vocals powerful and all this is completed by
the excellent guitar work from Diamond Darrell (he refused some time ago an
offering from Megadeth..). The rhythm unit is also very effective.
There is no thrash, the overall atmosphere being often closer to Danzig. In any
case they have an original sound.
One of the best songs (it's a long CD with 12 songs) is "Cemetery gates", a
slow/mid-tempo ballad which is a killer song (fine refrains and backing vocals).
I've heard that in the beginning Pantera was influenced by Kiss (they released
few albums already) but actually they have nothing to do with glam rock.
A really excellent album (and very well produced and recorded - on
headphones it's even better).
Here is also the band composition:
Phillip Anselmo - vocals
Rex - bass, vocals
Diamond Darrell - guitar, vocals
Vinnie Paul - drums, vocals

400.18 | | KETJE::VLASIU | | Thu Mar 21 1991 05:57 | 14 |
| Re. Ga-ZAZ
I don't think Pantera is much of death metal. Surely the music may be
quite dark (like Danzig) but it is quite variated and rich. Now, many
bands are labeled "death metal" because it seems to sell well actually.
Nocturnus and especially Obituary are death metal bands and I think
they'll have problems to avoid monotony after some time (I also don't
like too much disgusting subjects like body bags, cadavers,
mutilation..beurk!).
Even the "Cemetery gates" song which is an excellent balad, is quite
far from death metal (I have to be more attentive to the song words).
In any case Pantera should be considered a power metal band IMHO.

| Flip, in Pantera's CfH there is also quite a strong influence from
seventies HM (but updated). The bass/drum line is very heavy and
because of this you'll start to appreciate the other details better
only after a first listening. It may seem a little monotonous the very
first time and if you are not in a good mood (it's also close to 1h
long).

I bought "Cowboys From H*ll" when it first came out and I have
likewise bought "Vulger Display Of Power" It took a couple of
times through CFH, before I really started to get into it. I
would agree that neither album will likely make Billboard's Top
10 Albums of the week list, but IMO, both albums have some good
tracks. If you didn't like "Domination" or "Shattered" from CFH,
odds are, you won't like VDOP either. I would say that VDOP is
better than CFH only because it rocks a little harder.

sitting there trying to figure out who it was and the DJ said it was
Pantera. I was a little surprised because I hadn't liked what I'd
heard from them in the past.
This tune was different, the first part of it was kind of a Fate's
Warning/QR kind of groove, then it went into a more thrashy sounding
section toward the close. I was especially impressed with this one
little guitar fill which I thought was cool.
Anyway, I might be convinced to give these guys another listen (at
least the new album, I still think CfH sucks).

Survival Of The Fittest
-------- -- --- -------
Power Mongers... Diamond Derrell, Philip Anselmo, Rex, and Vinnie Paul.
Geography has a lot to do with it. The members of Pantera are Texans, first
and foremost, and personify the bluster and directness of the more rugged
residents of the Lone Star State. They pile it on like a pack of
amphetamine-crazed cowboys pumped with the adrenal fury of early Black Flag.
Audaciously calling their new album Vulgar Display of Power, they play it like
they say it - like a Metallica stripped of all excess, fronted by the
equivalent of Henry Rollins's angrier kid brother. Hard to believe that in
1983 Pantera began as just another bar band playing Van Halen and Judas Priest
covers (peppered with a few originals), six nights a week.
The guys looked pretty silly back then, employing the standard
teased-hair-and-bandana regalia and releasing independent albums with titles
such as Metal Magic, but their past hardly makes them blush.
"That was the best training a band could get," declares drummer Vinnie Paul,
who formed Pantera with guitarist-brother Diamond Derrell when the two were 17
and 15, respectively. "Play like we have for the past nine years, and you get
to be one hard bunch of motherf*ckers!"
This is precisely the ethos Pantera sums up with Vulgar's anthemic "A New
Level." Judging by the monumental rhythmic structures of "Rise" or the wiry
guitar skronks of "Live in a Hole," the band's a whole different animal now.
With the new album, it steps out of the claptrap of passe thrash bands to become
what lead singer Philip Anselmo modestly describes as "the heaviest band in the
world."
Respect is key with Pantera. Earning it has been a driving force for the group
personally and professionally.
"The way I am today has a lot to do with growing up as a scrawny, insecure kid,
always gettin' eaten alive by dumb-a$$e$ with big-muscles," snarls Anselmo, who
displays a tattoo reading "Strength" on the side of his bald head - and,
coincidentally, who grew up with crooner Harry Connick, Jr., as a schoolmate.
"Without respect, you get walked on."

| When I saw Pantara with Skidrow last spring, I thought they sounded
really bad. But maybe that's just the "opening act sound syndrome"
where they get crap for sound equipment and engineering, I don't know.
I've heard some of the songs off their most recent album and they
sounded great there! I didn't like Cowboys from H*ll as much though,
especially the title track.
In reading a couple of interviews in guitar magazines with Diamond
Darrell, he came off as kind of an idiot, but he can definately play.

songs like "Cowboys from hell, Psycho holiday, Heresy, ect" Its the
ones like that, that really make me bang my head! I still like the
other two albums. I like them for their intense thrashness. (is
thrashness a word?)
One of my favorite Pantera songs is "Over and out". That one rocks.

Well, I went to the show the other night at the Wallace Civic
Center in Fitchburg, MA.
I missed the opening act but got there right in time for the
main event.
All I can say is.. INCREDIBLE! The sounds was great, the set was
great, and the atmosphere was insane! The show was general admission
and we were able to get down to the floor with no problems. A pit
started up even before the band started!
Once they finally came on the whole place just broke out into one
big pit.. The crowd was great though, didn't see any fights, if you
fell on the floor there was always someone there picking you up. Even
got a chance to do some crowd surfin.. The security was even great. I
got tossed up front into the area right before the stage and the guards
saved me from face planting into the concrete and then directed me off
the side back into the pit.
I can't tell you the set but it covered all the albums pretty well
with alot of stuff off the new album. The show was a good 2 hours...
Overall.. a great time and show!

400.134 | Pantera is a super group! | KAOFS::C_MENENDEZ | CARLOS, SOO ONT C. SERVICES (705)946-3631 | Tue Mar 28 1995 16:12 | 26 |
| I started to come back to heavy metal about 6-8 months ago while
on a training trip in LA. They had this rock station and they were all
thumbs up about a White Zombie-Pantera beach bash.
The Pantera songs they play prompted me to order the VDOP thru BMG.
After that, the rest is history.
I am really surprised to see the first 100 or so notes. I really
think this group kicks major butt! One of the reasons that made me get
away from Metal in the 80s was the lack of speed and "aggressivness"
that the groups displayed on their music.
Bands like Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Judas Priest and etc were all too
lame for me, so I switched to new age and classical for a while.
I really missed the boat for some time and I really regret it.
Pantera has gotten me back to some really heavy stuff, and I think
thay pretty much stand alone int the style they play.
Pantera to me means harsh, aggressive song writing. CFH is a very
good album, but they have been getting more and more aggressive. Their
songs are not all the same, which is refreshing.
This stuff is good stuff....

| I will have to agree with .142 in that the later 2 are their best.
I was reading an interview with Phil Anselmo, and he was saying the
the main purpose in FBD was to start aggressive and stay there. No
radio or no "bite" songs.
IMO this is totally and brutally fulfilled....
Also, for true Anselmo fans, he is supposed to finish recording the
"DOWN" CD with the guys from Crowbar. Apparently he wrote the music and
Crowbar and on of the COC guys play there. If there is anything that
Crowbar needs, it is Anselmo singing. This guy shreds!!!!
Also, Anselmo apparently wrote some material for a band called
Christ Inversion. These are supposed to be true satanic songs, and I
want to get this. If Pantera sounds heavy, I can't imagine him in a Sa
tanic band.

I hope it is better than their last one....didn't impress me at all. I
like VDOP myself as being heavy, and aggressive enough for me from
them. I just didn't care for their last one....what is Phil trying to
prove, his attitude, how "bad" he is? That gets old real quick. And if
you watch him in an interview and then see their videos, like night and
day since he doesn't exude that "bad a**" aura IMO. ;-)

It's pretty cool but they are such a Pantera rip off.
The voice, the guitar sound, the crunchy licks. They remind me
of what Pantera would sound like if they were from Seattle.
Pretty cool CD though as long as your not annoyed with bands who
sound a lot like other bands. If you like Pantera though I'd

| I was not very impressed with the release.
I think Pantera peaked with VDOP and FBD. This Cd sounds a little
like they are running out of ideas, which shouldn't happen since they
have a very particular style.
The CD sound is phenomenal, the drum tracks are awesome, but I was
expecting an all out assault. Instead the CD starts out pretty fast,
then really sinks into darkness and comes back out too late.
The first 4 songs sounded like a script from FBD. !st songs fast
and furious, second song keeping up the pace, and the 3rd song a catchy
and sticky riff. But after that the CD lacks the intensity that FBD and
BDOP manage to keep.
Make no mistake, this is way better than the last White Zombie or
something like that, but if Mettalica can come out with another block
buster like "Master" or "Justice" Pantera could get dethroned...
Also, hot on their heels there are several CDs almost out. Grave is
supposed to come up with a masterpiece. Vile by Cannibal Corpse will be
finally out, as the new Slayer.
There were rumors anout Pantera taping all their shows last year
and that a live CD could come out. Now, that would be something...
Still a bit dissapointed because somethimes they sound just like
DOWN, who positively ticked me off..
I'll play it again to see if my opinion changes.
In 1994 FBD was able to withstand excellent CDs from Slayer and
Machine head to name a few, but I get the impression that this one will
not last very long with so much coming down the pipe.

in an interview they recently made they said:
fbd was just on one level from the begining to the end ... and that
they lost focus on fbd! they want it sound more like cowboys and vdp.
and wanted to add more variety in the overall sound of pantera !

hardness ? i wouldnt have bought a look a like from fbd

400.187 | Getting used to it | KAOFS::C_MENENDEZ | CARLOS, SOO ONT MCS (705)945-7862 | Wed May 08 1996 10:13 | 28 |
| Max:
I listened last night to the album 3 more times straight! I am
starting to get used to it, although I still don't like the slow
songs. The suicide #1 sounds like an old Led Zeppelin song, and
although LZ ruled in their time, they just don't have the punch they
used to.
In light of that, some songs are very good, although it still seems
to me that they lost their focus on this album, not on FBD. If there
was something I liked on FBD was that the album was a total aural
assault, some of the most brutal "commercial" heavy metal of all times,
and I thought this new album would even outdistance them more from the
crowd, but I guess I was wrong.
This LP will bring more fans to their bandwagon, because the styles
vary so much, but I guess I'm already too deep into the death metal
scene, so this album lacks punch in my book.
If Philip Anselmo got involved in a satanic band, he would be
great. As a matter of fact, he was supposed to be involved in a pro
ject called Christ Inversion, I don't know what transpired on that.
I guess the bottom line is that this LP doesn't break any new
ground as far as my musical taste is concerned, and that's why it
dissapointed me.

I listened to all latest 3 Pantera Albums on the weekend, and this

So what'd folks think of the show? First of all, what's up with
the hour or so of Pantera? Skimpy...late; too much weed probably.
Secondly, I thought this one would blow the croud through the wall
volume-wise. Negative; KISS was louder.
Had a good time anyhow. Wish I was on the floor.
Did manage to see Ian! Hey, nice show down below (you know what's
up)!!!!

they did a fair mix of songs from all their albums but mostly newer
stuff.
Dimebag's guitar playing is killer on the rythem(sp)sections but his
leads suck!Widdly, widdly widdly....!The first song they played he went
bananas with the Digitech whamy peddle to the point where it got a
little annoying.
