186.0. "Candlemass" by KETJE::VLASIU () Tue Sep 18 1990 05:32

This topic is for a sweedish band named Candlemass.
I haven't yet listened them, but following critics, they play like
early Black Sabbath but with a style adapted to present days. They have
a strong following as a doom's day metal band. They already have about
3 albums released, of which "Tales of creation" is their latest.
I'm curious to listen them as I enjoyed very much last time Slayer's
"South of Heaven" and I read that some of the riffs were Candlemass
    style.
    Anyone knows more ?

I got the album - You can have it free of charge. I haven't listened
to it in a year so I'm kinda hazy on why I didn't like it. But, I
KNOW it did nothing for me.

Bad luck. As I'm not only in speed metal but also in speed CD buying, I
just bought it today (it's true for a ridiculous low price) together
with Evil Dead's "Annihilation of civilization" (what's that ??).
But thank you for the kind intention !

After three listenings of "Tales of creation" I can say that this band has
good potential but practices a music which is really particular, linear and
flat. You have to listen many times for starting making difference between
the songs .. The sound is heavy but slooow and recalls the intro's from
Black Sabbath's first album (and this is a problem because you wait for some
rhythm change). It has not much to do with Sabbath's best songs (ballads
excepted). The album is like a middle age incantation.
Neverless, the singer has a classy voice and there is some good guitar work (the
6th song is a very fine instrumental). If they decide to accelerate and variate
more their riffs they can do really good things.
But it's also true that as it is now, their music may impress the very young
people and this may explain their following.
Conclusion: it's the heavy metal fan's sleeping music.

Re. Mike

Yes, there was also a band Evil Dead (or maybe still is) .. not only the
famous horror movie. I think it's a German band. Limited however to quite
flat thrash. I think I've introduced a topic for it.

PS. If you like QR/DT check also Oliver Magnum ('90? .. see also the topic).
