179.0. "Jett, Joan [and the Blackhearts]" by TROA09::KIMURA () Tue Sep 11 1990 17:03

I'm Grant Kimura, a co-op student at the University of Waterloo in
Canada. I'm working for DEC until December. Then I go back to school
for 4 months and hopefully will be returning in May.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any topic discussing Joan Jett.
She's my idol (yes, I am a guy). I also like Lita Ford and read the
    notes file on her.

Joan has been around for a long time. She left home when she was 13 to
be a groupie for Suzi Quatro. Suzi, at one time, played Leather
Tuscadero(sp?) on Happy Days. By the way, Suzi (she played bass) was a
real rocker in the early 70's. Joan left for Hollywood when she was 15
and approached Kim Foley about making an all-girl band. A week later,
Sandy West (the drummer) approached Kim and Kim introduced Sandy to
Joan. Lita Ford and Jackie Fox were later added. Cherie (spelling is
correct) Currie later joined the band. Cherie and Joan shared the lead
vocalist position. Cherie also played piano. The band became known as
the Runaways. They were called cheap boy toys as they danced on stange
skimply dressed. After a while, Cherie left the band due to drug
abuse. Jackie Fox left the band after a reported suicide in Japan.
The Runaways went through several bassists including Michael Steel
(Bangles). Lita ended up playing the lead and bass parts. Joan took
    over the singing.

After the band broke up, Joan released her solo debut in Europe. It
didn't do well and was rereleased in North America as Bad Reputation.
She was under her own record company Blackheart Records because the
major record companies would give her a deal because of her 'bad
reputation'. Her big break came when she released I Love Rock'n Roll.
This is an interesting fact because she didn't even write the song.
She wanted to do a cover of the song when she was in the Runaways but
the other girls didn't want to do it. Some of the hits from I Love
Rock'n Roll are the title track, Crimson and Clover, and Victim of
    Circumstance.

Other albums she and the Blachearts have done are; Album, Glorious
Results of a Mispent Youth, Good Music, Up Your Alley and The Hit List.
Joan also stared in the movie Light of Day with Michael J. Fox. I find
it interesting taht on every album she has done, there are at least two
cover versions of other artists songs.

Well, I guess that's enough history. I hope there are other Joan Jett
fans out there that would like to contribute to this file.

How old is joan now? Which bangles member was in the
runaways, and what does she/did she play? The only one I can think
of is the drummer. I think the runaways set the stage for most of
the all girl bands including: the GoGos, Bangles, Vixen, etc. I
love the song Crimson and Clover. As for lita, She's the Best..

Michael Steele is the Bangle member from the Runaways, and
    she plays bass.

OK Grant - fess up! Were you one of the guys in the front row
years ago for the Runaways? Do you know what I'm talking about?
It made for good press/hype back in its day.
      BTW - I like J.J. a lot. When I lived in Manhattan in 1981, I
caught her doing a lot of clubs. She was fairly active on the
NY/NJ circuit as the time, and this was just before her "I Love
    Rock n' Roll" breakout.

    re. .4

Hey man, it wasn't me. I actually never heard of Joan until I Love
Rock'n Roll came out. Even then, I didn't know about her until a
friend started to rave about her. So, I picked up the album without
even hearing a single tune from it. I loved it. Anyway, by the time
    1980 came, I was only 12.

I know what you mean when you said "Do you know what I'm talking
about." I have all the Runaways' albums, plus taped interviews with
her on David Letterman, from RockLine (radio call-in show broadcast all
over North America on Mondays at 11:00 pm EST), from recorded
interviews back in 1981, and from interviews from Much Music (Canada's
MTV). I also have an interview recorded with Lita Ford and I read
Cherie Currie's book Neon Angel. I've done my homework on Joan.

her vid with her in a Bikini. I think she'd hurt me!

179.12Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)TROA02::KIMURAThu Sep 13 1990 11:3020
    re. 179.6

I believe the video you saw was for the song "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh
Yeah)". I haven't see it (damn!) but, I've heard about it. There
aren't too many video's of Joan's shown up here in Canada. The only
one's they show are "I Love Rock'n Roll", "Bad Reputation", "Crimson
and Clover", "Good Music", "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", and "I Hate
Myself For Loving You". These videos are only shown during a segment
called SPOTLIGHT from Much Music. Talk about fate, two years ago, I
was going to see Robert Plant and Joan Jett play in Hamilton. Their
concert was postponed because Mr. Plant's drummer hurt his hand.
Lo-and-behold, the concert was rescheduled to December 12, 3 days
before my birthday. This was great. Then on my birthday, Joan Jett was
    on SPOTLIGHT.

Does anyone know if there is a video tape out that has some of Joan's
videos on it? I know Lita Ford has one out (of course I bought it),
    named Lita.

Man, that had to be well over a decade. That was the last time
    I wha..... (oooops).
Seriously, Joan Jett was on her own as early as 1981. The Runaways
as early as 1976 I think- c'mon Grant, you must know.
Go Go's were out in 1981 because I remember the dance clubs in
Manhattan playing "Our lips are Sealed" back then.

    Yo Boom,

On an unrelated note, I'd like to hear about your Manhattan escapades
sometime...you know, were you heavily involved in the NYC rock scene?

The Runaways were formed in 1975 and broke up in the spring of 1979.
Joan's first solo album was released in Europe in 1979 and rereleased
in North America in 1980. That album was Bad Reputation.
