438.0. "Mordred" by PEKING::JONESA1 () Wed May 09 1990 14:17

And here is a topic for Mordred - these guys are cool....they are
fast and thrashy, but there is a funky feel to the music. Great
    bass lines!

The singer is a lunatic and throws himself around the stage - into
    the audiance, etc! Brilliant!

Mordred have released their second album, titled "In this Life" through
    the Noise International label.

"Mordred, a quintet who look set to change people's whole attitude
towards the Bay area. Their music is a bizarre hybrid of thrash and
funk, fused with a host of other styles, ranging from jazz to country
(Aaarrghhhh! - Flip), that makes them one of the most unique, freshest
sunding outfits to emerge on the scene in ages."

    - Rob Clymo, Metal Forces.

"Mordred were magnificent. They manage to take the funk of the Red Hot
Chili Peppers, harden it up to thrash level and retain the
    experimentation of Voivod."

    Trish Jaega, Kerrang!

I'd forgotton about these guys. I saw them support Overkill and was
impressed...I'm pulling out their first album as soon as I get home
    tonight.

I just listened their previous album "Fool's game". It is excellent.
Very creative they mix some intelligent thrash with funk influences. Fine
vocals and background vocals, instrumentals and compositions. I'm looking
already for their latest album. Ludichrist / Scatterbrain fans .. Mordred is
for you. Well recommended.

comes from King Arthur's bastard son.

438.8Thoughts on "Fool's Game"LANDO::DEMARCOThe song remains the same...Wed Mar 20 1991 13:2734
I took Flip's advice and picked up "Fool's Game". I've only had a
chance to listen to it once so far, but I agree with most of the
previous comments. Very heavy, thrashy music with some funk
influences. Definitely NOT a pop album, so don't listen for these guys
on 'AAF. (Don't look for them on MTV either, because this band has
some truly gruesome-looking members! Definitely not a pretty-boy
    band!!)

But fortunately for me, good looks and good music seldom go together.
Mordred's tunes are good with many interesting tempo changes. The vocals
are good and clear, and the lyrics cover various topics and can get pretty
intense. It's the vocals that make them sometimes sound like Scatterbrain,
and sometimes even like Anthrax (IMHO).

Both guitarists are technically exceptional, and are also pretty tasty
and clever with their licks. Unfortunately, the lead guitar work was
pretty much buried in the mix, being partially obscuring by a muddy
rhythm guitar sound, which also took some of the edge off of the faster
tempo sections. I also thought the "special effects" audio processing
that was done to a lot of the guitar and vocals could have been lived
without. A band that's this good doesn't need all that whiz-bang stuff.

Just to prove they don't take themselves too seriously, they do a
rendition of Rick James' "Super Freak", which gave me a good chuckle.

All-in-all I like "Fool's Game" alot, and would easily recommend it to
anyone who likes a raw, rough HM sound. Thanks for turning me on to
    these guys, Flip!

I'm thinking about getting their newest release, "In This Life"...

Comments from anyone who might have it?

I prefer the new album, at the moment...but then I've only just
bought it. It's well worth buying Steve!!!

BTW, Mordred are the first HM Hardcore Funk band to introduce a DJ to
their line-up...no kidding dudes, check out the s-s-samp-s-samp-samp-
    sampling.
