Is it no wonder that I loved the guys the first time I heard them? I asked
about them in MUSIC weeks ago, but never got much of a response. They are from
Atlanta, and just recently played in town with Junkyard. They are scheduled to
come back to play at Axis on May 2nd, I think - I'm psyched to see them live!
"Jealous Again" does sound like JCM, but even more like the Stones. And the
album is supposedly very Stones-ish. Both the Boston Globe and Musician gave
it very strong reviews. Gotta check it out soon.....

A review in the June '90 issue of RIP on Black Crowes..
BLACK CROWES
"Shake Your Money Maker"
Rates with three daggers (out of four) as "heavy"
When you listen to the Black Crowes debut album, you know they've
been through more than their fair share of barroom brawls, run-ins
with local floozies, nights in the drunk tank and just general,
all around hard livin'. God knows where they got this massive
amount of experience, because from the looks of 'em, these guys
are mere kids.
"Shake Your Money Maker" has shades of Humble Pie, the Allman
Brothers and "Sticky Fingers"-era Stones chewed up and spit
out like a wad of Red Man. That ol' electrified Southern blues
is epitomized in tunes such as "Twice as Hard" and "Stare it
Cold." There's a swaggering weave to "Jealous Again" and
"Sister Luck" is a lazy, worldweary piece -- the sorta song
you might put on when you're watching the sunset, drinking
moonshine and ponderin'. When singer Chris Robinson lays
into Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle," his hefty lungs belie
his skinny frame. THe only time the Black Crowes show their
youth in in "Thick n' Thin." This combination of '50's
rhythms and '70's riffs is performed with so much snottiness
and fresh energy that a group of oldsters couldn't possible
have pulled it off.
It's no surprise that this bunch hail from south of the
Mason-Dixon line, but the fact that they're from Atlanta,
Georgia, does strike an odd chord -- they must have grown up
far apart from the strains of the alternative scene that
spawned REM. This brand of rockn'nroll sparkles like pieces
of silver thrown carelessly into the gutter -- it's gritty
and loaded with soul.

I went to see the Black Crowes at Axis on Wendesday, and let me tell ya - they
were HOT!
I had only heard the single (still haven't picked up the album yet - I will
this weekend). "Jealous Again" sounds a lot like the latest Stones album.
However, that's not what they really sounded like live. They were more of a
blues/boogie band like in the early 70's.
The singer has a voice that is very reminiscent of Steve Marriott, with maybe
a touch of Paul Rogers thrown in. Overall, the band reminded me of Humble
Pie's 'Live at The Fillmore' album, and Faces w/Rod Stewart. They did a great
cover of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy", and the rest were originals.
There was also a lot of stage presence from these guys! Although it was a
small stage, they were still running around and jumping and just really having
a good time. I just wish they played longer (they were the opening act for
McCauley/Schenker Group).
If you like Faces, Humble Pie, Georgia Satellite, 'Sticky Fingers' and 'Exile
On Main Street' - then you'll also love this band! I highly recommend that you
see them if they come to your area!
alan
P.S. There seems to be quite a 'street buzz' surrounding the band. Lots of
radio and press there to see them, and they are rumored to be opening
up for Aerosmith this summer....

AS THE CROWS FLY...
A REAL ROCK BAND WINGS ITS WAY TO THE UPPER REGIONS OF THE CHARTS
Taken without permission from Rolling Stone Magazine, Issue 596,
January 24.
In the lobby fo the paramount hotel, in New York City, it's easy to
forget the grimy parade of hookers, dope dealers and co men just half a
block away on Eighth Avenue. In fact, the Paramount, a ritzy art
noveau fortress, seems almost *too* clean. Its smiling Ken-doll
doormen, angular furnishings and cavernous ceilings lend it a sterile,
forbidding air.
The ambience changes markedly, though, on the ninth floor, when Chris
Robinson - lead singer, lyricist and chief soapbox orator for the Black
Crowes - opens the door of his suite. A cloud of incense - amber,
maybe - swirls around Robinson's gangly frame. Robinson's girlfriend,
a stunning blonde, putters around the suite in baggy gray seat pants
and a lopsided ponytail, tidying things up. Even Robinson's greeting -
"You don't mind if we just kind of hang out, do you?" - conveys an
unguarded warmth.
Robinson collects a tray of shrimp and fresh fruit from room service,
and settled with is dinner spread out before him, he appears so content
that it seems cruel to start firing questions at him. Asked if he'd
rather the tape recorder remain off until he's finished eating, he
shrugs. "It's up to you," he says, smiling. "But you never know - some
flash of genius could fly out."
*Fly out*, indeed. Earlier today, over tea in the hotel's restaurant,
Robinson's twenty-one-year-old guitarist brother, Rich, the Crowes'
cofounder, mentioned that the two seldom do interviews together, and
now it becomes apparent why. The reserved, younger Rich would never
get a word in edgewise.
Converstation isn't just a casual undertaking for Chris Robinson. He
goes about it with the zeal of an evangelist, raising his voice to make
points, dropping it to a whisper to underscore them. He punctuates his
sentences with long pauses and exaggerated hand gesteures and ends
nearly all of them with a benevolent smile, as if he were pleased to
have presented you with that particular idea. Once Robinson gets
rolling, it's difficult to shut him up. Provided, of course, the
subject is one that intererts him.
"I have a bad reputation right now as far as radio goes," Robinson
says. "This radio station got upset that I didn't answer the
qeustions. They thought I did it in a snotty way." He pauses, running
a hand through his hair. "I'm twenty-four years old in ten days, and I
am *not* f*cking *Kip Winger*, okay? You want to talk about what the
Black Crowes are about, let's talk. You want to talk about rock and
roll, I'll sit there all day, as long as someone's buying the drinks.
But don't expect me to be like everybody else. If you want an amusing
anecdote, talk to Mark Slaughter. I'm sure he'll say something like
'Yeah, we had a couple of lite beers and ran down the hall in the hotel
in our underwear. Whooooo.'"
During the conversation that follows, Robinson will fearlessly hurl
barbs at several big-name rockers. But because the individuals that
arouse his ire are invariable prefabricated pretty boys or lip-syncing
buffoons, the opinionated Robinson seems more a crusader for rock and
roll authenticity than a boasting young whippersnapper. The worst one
could say about him is that he seems enviably well adjusted. (I'm not
here because I'm lucky," he says, "I'm here because I'm very good at
what I do.")
Robinson has every right to feel confident, given the Crowes' two-year
flight from relative obscurity to the upper ranks of the *Billboard*
charts. Chris and Rich Robinson finalized the band's lineup in 1988
and snagged a record deal a year later. After the release last
February of their debut album, *Shake Your Money Maker*, the Crowes
found themselves in constant demand as an opening act. And by December
- propelled by massive airplay for the band's raunchy cover of Otis
Redding's "Hard to Handle" and the Crowes breakneck touring schedule,
opening for arena headliners like Heart, Aerosmith and Robert Plant -
*Sake Your Money Maker* has gone platinum. Doors, at first glance,
seemed to have swung wide open for the Black Crowes.
"What do people think - we were a bunch of kids who all of a sudden got
lucky?" asks Chris. "F*ck that. I busted my ass."
The Robinson brothers grew up in Atlanta, getting a home-study course in
music appreciation from their father, Stan, a musician who enjoyed a
Top Forty hit ("Boom-a-Dit-Dip") in the Fifties. Both sons credit
their knowledge of early blues to the elder Robinson and his diverse
record collection. ("I couldn't tie my shoe until I was nine," says
Chris, "but I knew how to work the stereo".)
In 1984, when Chris was eighteen and Rich fifteen, the brothers made
their stage debut in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as a punk band called Mr.
Crowe's Garden. (Punk, explains Rich, was all they knew how to play at
that point. He refuses to divulge the significance of the word
*crowes*, intimating that to do so would bring swift and horrible
punishment.) The fifty-dollar paycheck for that first show bounced.
Undaunted, the two continued pestering area club owners for gigs,
fiddling with their lineup and honing their skills. After the younger
Robinson discovered the open-G tuning favored by one of his idols,
Keith Richards, and drummer Steve Gorman joined the fold, the band
settled into a swaggering, blues-based groove. By 1988, when bassist
Johnny Colt and guitarist Jeff Cease were inaugurated, the Black Crowes
had a firm handle on their sound.
The typical first reaction to that sound has become a costant source of
irritation for the Crowes. The songs on *Shake Your Money Maker* -
jagged, bloozy barroom stomps; winding, emotional R&B wailers - have
prompted more than a few critics to dismiss the Crowes as Rolling
Stones knockoffs. And Chris Robinson's gutbusting vocals invariable
draw comparisons to Faces-era Rod Stewart.
"It's bullsh*t," says Rich. "There's no new music ever, period. it's
all an interpretation of music that's come before. I interpret Keith
Richards in the same way that Keith Richards interpreted Muddy Waters
and Chuck Berry. If anyone's going to accuse us of ripping off the
Stones, they'd better listen to a couple of Chuck Berry records first."
Another guaranteed feather ruffler is the rofer to the Black Crowes as
a Southern band, although, technical they are one, barring geography
and Allman Brothers veteran Chuck Leavell, who supplied keyboards on
*Shake Your Money Maker*, the Crowes have little in common with rebel
rockers like the Allmans, Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Georgia Satellites, yet
many journalists, playing up the good ol' boy angle, insist on invoking
those names when describing the band.
"I mean, I was born in the South, and I'm very proud of that," says
Rich. "But I'm not waving a rebel flag, you know?"
"This guy at MTV got all upset because he read an interview where I
called Ronnie Van Zant a redneck," adds Chris. "He goes, 'Ronnie Van
Zant was a great man.' I said, 'Look, I didn't say he was an *a**hole*, I
said he was a *redneck*.'"
Stones comparisons and Southern stereotypes notwithstanding, the
quickest way to induce a stream of vituperative commentary from either
Robinson is to bring up the current state of rock and roll. Chris, who
spends a great deal of time nosing around in record stores, is
particularly indignant on the subject.
"Don't sit around and complain about how sh*tty the music is if you're
putting up with it," Chris says. "Who said that all these bands that
headline arenas are allowed to go out and sing to backup tapes?
Aerosmith did it - I love Aerosmith to death. I respect 'em, I grew
up on 'em. But you *bore* me when you sing to a backup tape. Heart,
Robert Plant, they all did it. If you're an entertainer and you take
it seriously, you entertain with your natural abilities. You go onstage
and take a chance like everyone else. People say to us, 'Man, I heard
some bad notes in your set tonight.' Well, f*cking-A *right* you heard
some bad notes. You saw a *real* band tonight, *didn't* you?"
Chris pauses, then swoops down on another pet peeve: "I don't put lots
of chicks in our videos with their tits hanging out, because *I* can
sell my band. What a *novel* f*cking concept. I mean, I did looking
at chicks like anyone else, but if you can't be stimulated by what *I*
do, then I'm not gonna fool you. You don't like it? Turn it off.
You like it? Buy the record or wait for the next one. Come to see us
when we come to town. *That's* what it's all about. That's what rock
and rool was - not "Well we'll bring in a stylist and bring in Desmond
Child and Bruce Fairbairn to put a bunch of "oh, yeahs" on your
record.'
"You know," he says almost sadly, "there *are* people out there who
really care and who don't call records *product*. A Pop-Tart is a
product. I make music. I don't want it to be a f*cking *product*, I
want it to be a piece of your *life*."
Half an hour later, Robinson, temporarily purged of demons, dives into
a closet and emerges with a rough-hewed wooden crate. It looks
suspiciously like it might house a small mummy.
If one where to believe all of the stores about the Black Crowes, the
concept of Robinson's harboring a bandaged bogyman in his closet
wouldn't seem farfetched. Several interviews, perhaps stumped by the
Crowes' reluctance to serve up tales of female conquest and drunken
debauchery, have gone beyond the call od duty to entertain their
readers. One masterpiece in a well-known rock magazine implied that
the Crowes were engaging in clandestine voodoo rituals before their
shows. Chris says the trouble started when the writer of the piece
asked him what he was reading, and he happened to be immersed in a tome
about voodoo. (Robinson says he typically leans toward Beat novelists
and "really good pretentious things" by writers like Franz Kafka.)
During the interview, Chris also casually mentioned the band's habit of
burning candles onstage and the Tibet human-bone jewelry and gris-gris
pouches collected by some of the band members. The finsihed piece made
much of the band's "voodoo obsessions" and hypothesized that it's "an
avid fascination with black magic that keeps these Crowes flying."
Chris, who contents that the Crowes' interest in voodoo paraphernalia
springs from nothing more than a love of the exotic, says he found the
article funny. Some, however, didn't find it so comical. The piece
spawned a panicky rash of LP-and-concert-ticket bonfires organized by
alarmed Christian parents in Texas and Virginia. Naturally, Robinson
is eager to share his views on *that* sector of society.
"Jesus Christ loved everyone," he says bluntly. "Jesus Christ probably
loved *Satan*. I mean, I don't believe that God and Satan are real, but
if you're a Christian, then you love *everyone*. And if you're a
Christian and you think *I'm* f*cked.... then f*ck *you*."
His frustrations vented, Robinson lowers the box to the floor and
beings undoing the catches. And though the object inside does turn out
to be something that was once alive, it wasn't, sad to say, a human.
It was a gourd.
Robinson proudly holds up an elaborately carved, beautifully shaped
sitar. Earlier today, he has gone on a hush-hugh shopping expedition
in Greenwich Village. The instrument is Chris's surprise Christmas
present for his brother, who is, by this time, snoozing in his own
suite down the hall.
"He's going to freak out," says Robinson gleefully. "There's a side of
me that wants to go wake him up and say, 'Rich, look what I got for
you,' You know, because I love him so much.
"Me and Rich are much closer," he says softly. "We've gotten closer
this year than we have in a long time."
He takes up the sitar and examines its separate networks of heavy and
fine strings. Gingerly he begins to pluck at it, eliciting a
succession of eerie, keening notes. "I have no *idea* how to play this
f*cker," he says finally.
For the briefest of instants, Chris Robinson actually appears to be
unsure of himself.

For those that aren't aware, this is ancover of an old Otis Redding song. It's
been covered by a lot of bands out there, from Memphis Slim to the Grateful
Dead to (now) the Black Crowes. So don't blame them for the lyrics.....
As for best new band, I agree with Kim - there wasn't a whole lot to choose
from this year! These guys may not be the most original band around, but at
least they're sincere about their rock and roll!

boys and girls is diversity. Can you spell, I don't know if I did
properly. Anyhow I kind of like a little diversity in my music. Mix it
up a little. I don't know about you all, but if I had to listen to one
style of music all the time I would grow very weary of it. I like a lil
acoustic splashed in between the screamin guitars. It's kinda like if
you had sex everyday you would probably grow tired of it after say
thirty of forty years.;^) As far as there Crowes are concerned I think
Alan hit it on the head. Right now at least they seem very sincere
about their music and I think that is an excellent quality, one that
may take them far. Plus I gotta like a group whose two founding members
last name is Robinson.

When I said stuck on himself I didn't mean about his looks. I was
talking about his attitude - he seemed to come across (with his

from the syndicated radio talk show Rockline earlier this week and he
said he didn't think the Black Crowes would ever do a corporate

answer to. Said he only answered to "myself, my brother, family, and
friends, my music, my girlfriend..."
While a certain part of me can appreciate his position, it sure sounds
like he's burning a lot of bridges with comments of that sort. Seems
to me that this could limit the band in the future. I'm not sure I'd
appreciate him doing that if I were in the band.

| I went to see the black crowes last thursday and was sadly less than
impressed with what I saw.Firstly,Chris Robinson's singing was abismal
and then he starts shouting at certain members of the audience "quit
starin' at me,have a good time but quit starin' at me".He then procedes
to pick on a member of the audience and tries to hit them with a
microphone stand, which is pretty difficult because they are about 20
feet from the stage.Next thing was to start telling the poor bugger who
was getting taunted to get "their p*ssy asses outta there before he
comes down and f*cks them"he then said he was going to f*ck everyone in
the place(about 2000 people). The finale came when he lept off the stage
and attacks the punter who was getting all the abuse.Johnny Colt jumps
off too and the audience member gets thrown out.The rest of the
audience are *less* than impressed and procede to tell him so.He tries
to justify his actions but fails dismally.Audience becomes angry mob
and the band finishes after 1 hour and ten minutes,no encore, nobody
wanted one.Two final points are 1)the persona he was picking on was a
female and 2)I heard from my "sources" that she was paid off to keep
quiet that came to 5000 pounds(about $8000 or so).Personally, and this
is just a personal opinion;I would have let the skinny w*nker rot in
jail. The band played well, the sound got better by the 3rd song but the
singer is an anorexic dick!

Yeah, I agree with this. I think that a good example is the stuff that
Axl has done with GnR over the past few months. It didn't seem to hurt
their album sales for the UYI records, but I've sure heard a lot of
people slagging them off because of it.
> However, i will say it again...the crowes are one of the best bands to

I don't understand this comment coming from you, Buck. Haven't you
repeatedly said that you hate the Rolling Stones? To me the Black
Crowes sound *exactly* like the early Stones.
For myself, I really liked the Black Crowes stuff when they first came
out, but I've gotten a little tired of it. I think that this is partly
due to media overexposure and partly due to the fact that they have a
dated sound which I'm already used to hearing from other bands (and am
pretty tired of already). As GAZ (I think) suggested, The Quireboys
have a kind of similar '60s straight ahead rock and roll sound which I
like better (for now). They impart a lot of energy to it!

The crowes *do* sound like early Stones. And yes, I was a Stones fan
for quite a long time. But, as with most bands I follow, I really
like the early stuff (Up until Black & Blue is great). Some Girls
is tolerable in places, and everything since is rubbish! So, maybe
that is where my comments stemmed from, but early Stones was great
stuff...so heavily R&B influenced, but in a newer, fresher (rawer)
rock format...that is the essence of the Stones sound.

I don't put the Quireboys or Georgia Satellites in either the same
category as Black Crowes, OR the same category as each other, musically
speaking. The crowes *really* have that heavy, simmering R&B groove
thing DOWN, and with Robinson's vocal style, which is long on blue
notes, they really pull away from the Quireboys, which are far more
mainstream R&R imho (closer to Led Zep than, say, muddy waters!).
Georgia Satellies in a different world all-together...fusing
southern-flavored hard rock with the blues.

| There are too many people in the music business with an attitude problem. I
expect people to be like that and am pleasantly surprised when they are not.
I think that Chris Robinson has a problem if he singles out a fan, and would be
plenty pissed off if it was me. I think being on the road took its toll and
they had a bad night. He didn't bean the girl on the head with a bottle did
he? They need to grow up a little.
I like the Crowes and listen to them a lot. Almost every song on their album
has a catchy little groove to it. They can be loose and boogie around with a
new song and still keep people interested. They did it at the Centrum warming
up for ZZ Top. I wished they played longer - I didn't care they were playing
new stuff.
Chris is an avid record collector and I think that the success of the Crowes is
because they are fans of many kinds of music.

rowdy than the first one. Some great grooves, no doubt, and I can

A "B3" refers to a Hammond B3 organ, the preferred keyboard for most rockers
in the 60s and 70s (reference Jon Lord in Deep Purple).

From: [email protected]
(PENNY NELSON BARTHOLOMEW, UPI Broadcast Features Editor)
Subject: The Black Crowes: the apathetic need not listen.
Date: Fri, 7 Aug 92 13:28:05 PDT
UPI Arts and Entertainment
CHICAGO (UPI) -- Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson said he and
his fellow Crowes considered putting a sticker on the outside of their
latest album, ``The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.'' That
sticker would have read: ``Within Contains No Apathy.''
And Robinson, 25, said the meaning is pretty self-explanatory. ``We
have lives and apathy's not part of it and it's not part of our music,''
he said in an interview with UPI.
Fans certainly haven't been apathetic about the Crowes' follow-up to
its 1990 debut album ``Shake Your Money Maker.'' The LP debuted on the
Billboard Top-200 albums chart at No. 1 last May and has since gone
platinum. It yielded two No. 1 singles -- ``Remedy'' and ``Sting Me.''
Pretty good for an Atlanta-based, blues-tinged, Southern rock band
that was thrown off the Z.Z Top tour last year for expressing its
beliefs.
The Black Crowes was the opening act for Z.Z Top when Robinson, an
outspoken critic of commercial sponsorship of the arts, decided to give
voice to that opposition. The concert tour's sponsor, a major brewery,
did not appreciate his negative comments about a beer company sponsoring
a rock tour. The Crowes were forced to take wing.
``We think there's more to this whole thing than money, and I'm not
going to let money dictate how I behave, especially as an artist,'' said
Robinson during the group's recent appearance in Chicago. He said he
objected to becoming ``a piece of ass for Corporate America to latch
itself onto because some guy wants to hang out backstage at a gig
sometimes.''
Robinson believes such sponsorship turns music into ``a service-
oriented industry'' and interferes with freedom of expression. ``I don't
need anybody else's name on my poster. If you've got to have that, then
maybe you shouldn't be out there,'' he said.
The Black Crowes consists of Robinson, his younger brother, Rich, 23,
as well as bassist Johnny Colt, drummer Steve Gorman and guitarist Marc
Ford, who's new to the group and formerly played with Burning Tree. The
Robinson brothers wrote the nine original tracks on ``The Southern
Harmony and Musical Companion,'' which also includes a cover of Bob
Marley's ``Time Will Tell.''
Robinson said the album was ``really kind of put together...in a
couple of weekends'' and was recorded in eight days in the group's
hometown of Atlanta. No high-tech digital equipment for these guys; the
Crowes used analog gear to record, which Robinson said allows for ``tape
hiss and sounds that are real.''
The difference between ``Shake Your Money Maker'' and ``The Southern
Harmony and Musical Companion,'' Robinson said, is an ``immaturing
process.'' He said he and Rich went ``back to our foundations as to what
we want to do as musicians.''
``And there's a different picture on the cover,'' he laughed.
Robinson feels the Crowes need to get about five or six albums under
its belt before the group can be judged as to what it's all about.
``With five or six records, there's more of a tapestry of songs that we
can look at and say what's a maturing process and what's not,'' he said.
Following the group's first sold-out tour of Japan and Australia
earlier this year, the Black Crowes launched its ``High As The Moon''
North American road trip July 24 in Minneapolis.
Following the first night's concert, the band's strength of
conviction got Colt in trouble when he came to the aid of a drunken fan
who he thought was being handled a bit too roughly by police. He was
arrested, charged with obstruction of justice, and had to pay a fine.
No one seems to know how long the current tour will last, although
it's slated to run at least through 1993. The Crowes' previous tour
lasted 19 months and included 350 shows to more than 5 million people.
``I guess it's over when someone says, 'Are you going home?''' Robinson
said.

407.213 | Black Crowes Rock the Orpheum | GNUVAX::BUCKLEY | I need a REMEDY! HUH! yeah... | Sun Aug 30 1992 16:50 | 26 |
| The Black Crowes were superb as they played the first of three sold
out shows last night at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. Their raw
talent, artfully-crafted songs, creative staging/lighting, and the
ever-manic stage presence of Chris Robinson made for one of the best
rock and roll shows in recent memory. And they did it without the
bravado, backup singers/musicians, and blow-up dolls used by other
"super talents" such as the Rolling Stones and Guns N' Roses. They
infuse integrit and honesty into a rock n' roll world tarnished by
corporate sponsorships and garish, overblown stage shows. They are
a must see.
Their motto for the evening was, "Save Us - No Narcs."
Anti-establishment as ever, they backup their rebelliousness with
intelligence and a subtle sense of musicality. Their drummer, Steve
Gorman, is truly one of the best in the business. Chris Robinson's
voice is strong and clear in concert and he hit all the high notes and
then some... can the same be said for (I hate to say it) Axl Rose? The
new guitar player adds depth to the band; Rich R. and bassist Jonny
Colt round out the most solid rhythm section since the Phil Rudd AC/DC
days; and Ed Hawryshch on keys was funky, loose, yet never overplays
a number.
IMHO, the Crowes are the best thing to happen to rock n' roll in years.
Watch for a new number, "The Fear Years", which was one of the best
songs performed last night.

| Al_b_sure_you_were_missed, because the Crowes crowd was completely
devoid of any CR_look_a_likes wearing crushed velvet bellbottoms...
I wuz kinda bummed out, cause you gotta wonder to what degree the
Boston "college crowd" can really appreciate the artistry of the
Crowes and the whimsical, long-lost era that they represent. For
example, everyone went nuts when they played "Hard to Handle" and
Chris R. *tried* to remind the audience that the credit and the roots
really belong to people like Otis Redding... but you gotta wonder how
many heads that (and several of his other, more conceptual statements)
went sailing right over.
I saw one woman wearing crushed velvet pants and a few others who
looked liked they had a clue, but by and large, the red-necked,
beer-guzzling, joe_average_concert_goer prevailed.
Yes, they had their signature nets of lights on stage, both in back of
the band and as curtains in front of them. And of course, the stage
was covered with oriental rugs so CR could go barefoot.

407.222 | BC embark on their 1993 tour | POWDML::BUCKLEY | sometimes all i want to do is wait | Thu Jan 21 1993 09:23 | 28 |
| The Black Crowes are about to embark on the 1993 leg of their "High as
the Moon" tour. The tour will basically be the same as the 1992
leg, with the stage consisting only of amps, drums, and oriental rugs.
They will have the light blub/christmas lights light show, but Chris
Robinson said "there will be more of it this time around".
The BC's have also introduced a special "Anti Scalping" ticket policy
for this tour. It will work something like this -- you purchase the
tickets, and you get a voucher, which you sign with your name. When
you go to the show, you show the voucher with a picture ID, and then
you sign you name again. Signatures and photo ID's have to match.
The Crowes experimented with this policy on a few shows during the
1992 leg of the tour, and it wsa very successful, and without a lot
of hassle. The hassle is on the venue, NOT the ticket buyer. Chris
Robinson was pissed at hearing about Crowes fans paying $200 - $300
for tickets down front, now he says "the seats will go to those who
wait in line for em, just like the old days". The crowes will
continue to play 2,000 - 3,000 seat theaters on this tour, which also
aids in the special ticket policy working.
Also in effect this tour will be a special "security" policy. Chris
Robinson had to stop their show several times during the 1992 leg
for security harrassing Crowes fans. The BC's want their shows more
like the Grateful Deads -- where people can dance, sing, do what they
want, and not have to worry about Security roughing them up, or
causing a scene. The BC's will have two of their own security gaurds
in the audience to keep the OTHER security gaurds in line of the
Crowes policy!!

| Chris, put a sock in it, ok? The Crowes set several house records
on the 1992 leg of their "High as the Moon" tour, and was written
up in Amusement Business as one of the hottest bands around, in
terms of ability to draw, and gross ticket sales. They don't say that
about everyone, so can it.
FWIW -- Wildside played a dismal gig in IL last week ... they only made
$9,425 for the gig, selling 788 tickets in a club which seats 1,500.
Can you say they've made the big time, I think not...
PS - The Megadeth/Stone Temple Pilots shows continue to rake in big

| The crowes are playing theaters instead of arenas for intimacy.
Another reason Chris Robinson was so insistant on the "anti
scalping" policy was he wants to look out and see 20 rows of
die-hard crowes fans, not 10 rows of "people who got tickets
from the record company or whatever, and just showed up and
don't even know the band". Look at it where this band is coming

He recently stopped a show to yell at some punks moshing in the
front rows, exclaiming "look, if you're too wasted, go home and
deal with it there, but don't make everyone else suffer for it!"
8^)
(now, wtf would mosh at a BC's show?!?)
The Crowes also just did a FREE concert in Houston to make up for the
fact that the last time they were in that city, Security really
harrassed their fans, and kicked a LOT of them out of the show for
dancing, etc. The Crowes had their security in place for the show
to police the hall security...

Ok, I bought that album and when scanning through their CDs, saw
that 'Southern Harmony and Musical Companion' exists actually
_two_ times. Once as a single album with all the studio recording
and then as a double album with an additional live CD (4 tracks,
35 min.). Now, the price was the same, guess what I took?
The same thing was true for Pearl Jam's 'TEN'. The difference was
that this was a single CD in both cases, one time with 10 studio
tracks and then with four more life tracks.
Do they do this in other countries as well? And why do they do
it at all? Of course they want to sell as many albums as possible
but who would buy an album _only_ because those additional life
tracks? The smaller albums (with 10 tracks) must be lying in the
stores like lead after they published the album with the life
tracks. And, can you name more albums where this occured?
weird...

| I have to say that I was pretty hacked off about the extra live tracks
on the Black Crowes album - here in the UK I bought the album when it
came out, as I'm sure did all the dedicated Crowes fans - I'm not a
major fan but thought it was a superb album and well worth the money -
can't remember how long ago it was when it came out, but this month its
just appeared again with the extra tracks - I certainly won't be
shelling out another 13 pounds for this, but all the fans will probably
want the extra stuff anfd have to fork out twice.
This also happened to me with the Living Colour LP Times Up - as a fan,
I bought it on the day of release, only to find that a few months later
(after one of the singles had shifted some units) it was being pressed
up with extra tracks (live and remixes) et al.
Major bummer, this, but I've come to expect this sort of marketing ploy
from record companies.

Fair enough, I suppose. It could apply to some bands I like, but those
bands sound that way intentionally. (Incidentally, I don't include
Rollins Band in that description. Just 'cause someone can't really
sing and screams a lot doesn't mean his voice is shot. The band is
tight.)
The Crowes just don't seem to have that spark they used to have. I can
live with all the things I complained about, but I guess my real
complaint is about something less tangible.

First and foremost, it wasn't AAR's show!! 'BCN had the 'nod from
the Crowes to get top billing for the show, and they had the most
"tickets" available for selling. The Paradise holds 650 people --
150 tickets were divided up amongst BCN, AAF, and CGY, with the
vast majority going to BCN and _very few_ (we're talking like a
dozen each) to the other two stations. Yes, doesn't take a rocket
scientist to figure out that only 500 people in line got in to see
the show!
BTW, Terri made it in. She said it was a great show, but WAY too loud.

on (don't even know the name of it, but its the newest single) I
instantly think R.Slab (something like Shoot the Weatherman Down)
same bluesy rock thing. I don't really think the other songs sound
alike, because if they did, I would hate Raging Slab ALMOST as much
as I hate the Black Crows.

alike, too. I've only heard 'Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert', but
I've heard all the Crowes stuff, and I think they're very similar.
The singers have a similar style, and they both play southern-type
rock. I like both bands, but I think Raging Slab is a _far_ more
talented bunch.
