377.0. "Drive" by KETJE::VLASIU () Tue Mar 27 1990 04:32

This note is for the band named Drive.
Drive is a californian band from which I know one album named
"Characters in time" released in 1988.
Their composition is: David Taylor (vocals), Rick Chavez (guitars),
Mercy Valdez (guitars), Michael Antony Guerrero (bass) and Valentine San Miguel
(drums).
They have strong lead and backing vocals, fine instrumentals and play a heavy
metal in the same category with Queensrche, Fates Warning, Helloween, Oliver
Magnum, Hitt Man.
The "Characters in time" album is quite ambitious and overall very fine. They
have many tempo changes and include fine guitar (duo) solos. It is better after
repeated listening.
Here is the contents of the LP:

1. (New reign) The Phoenix
2. Kamikaze
3. Stormtrooper
4. Heroes road
5. Snake eyes - it's the least good and completely different from their others
6. Eternal mercenary
7. The entity
8. Sinister minister - the best song (>6')
9. Forever and a day
11. I need the nights

All tracks are fine except the #5 which does not fit with the rest (they could
have eliminated it as the LP has over 48').
So this album is also well recommended.

This isn't the same band that did "Doing the Countdown" a
few years ago, is it? Or was that "The Drive"?

And is "Sinister Minister" an "Ode to Jim Bakker"?

I don't know if they released other LPs. If I remember the words of
sinister minister there was nothing in or arround the text about Jim
Bakker. I'll have a closer look to it. The name of the band is just
"Drive" (no The..). The CD was released by Rampage Records.

Back around 1988 I picked up a `New Artist' CD
produced by Rhino Records and it had `I Need the
Night' on it by Drive. I thought they were good,
but haven't seen anything else released by them
since. Guess it's time to check again huh ? :^)

It's worth a listening. "I need the nights" is ok but the rest is even
better ("I need the nights" is more single oriented). They have good
potential to become a first line group (but as many good bands they are
not very commercial so it will be more difficult to succeed).
