Conference napalm::heavy_metal

    Venom? I saw this band on magazine about 8 years ago or so. But I've 
    never heard of their albums. Magazine said that they were Motor Head 
    type band, I remember. And there were three guys in the picture.

I listened twice the "Prime Evil" CD and I cannot say I'm impressed. It is
surely quite fast and noisy but it's not my taste. So I sold it. I bought after
Savatage's "Gutter Ballet" which I really like.
Venom played allways in quite a brutal way but without much fantasy and this
lets me cold. Annihilator is more intense while beeing very creative and this
is what I like.

    Vemon has broken up!!  The bassist and guitarist have gone on to form a
    new band called COGNOS.  Hey -Tle and -Dle...you guys into either Venom
    or Cognos?!?  I guess they are real heavy black metal...not heard it
    yet, but I know they hjave two albums out, and just completed a tour of
    the UK.  Tony/FLip...you seen these guys around??  
    
    I went to college with the guitarist, Mike Hickey...he is a good
    player!!  He lives in Athol, MA, and the rest of the band is based in
    the UK.  They send tapes through the mail to work on stuff, etc.
    
    I saw Mike at the Pitrelli guitar clinic and he filled me in on Venom,
    Cognos, etc.

	  check it out.  I do like Venom, with their sickness of 
    	  lyrics.

    Are you sure its Cognos and not Cronos?Cronos was the ugly little bass

    Geez... a few years go by and Venom vanishes. Well the only thing that
    can be said about this band is that they helped Metallica, Slayer,
    Megadeth, Napalm death, etc...
    in other words THEY are the kings of Death Metal, Thrash metal, Black
    metal and speed metal.

    They were a bloody cacophany when they first appeared. I remember
    working in a record shop and this guy wanted to return a scratched
    version of "At War with Santa" (could'nt resist it, sorry :^}). To be
    honest we could'nt find a scratch as the whole thing sounded more
    akin to a pneumatic drill falling around inside a concrete mixer. 
    
    And then there was the time Abadon appeared on the UK current affairs
    programme Newsnight a few years back after the scam regarding the
    Judas Priest suicides. I think I may have posted a note about it 
    somewhere in here.

    I think Metallica had much more to do with making "thrash" a more 
    acceptable thing in the music industry (and public).

	 Back to early 80's Metallica did a tour and open for Gods Venom 
	 to supported the Kill'em All LP.

	 Yes, they are the Gods of............Wish they're reunion and 
	 play at the Metalfest in Milwaukee this year with other 100
         bands.

    c'mon guys... everyone knows that Venom was the major influence in
    almost every hard metal band going ( if not directly..then indirectly )
    Hetfield himself said in an interview done in the mid 80's that they
    were watching the ' new wave ' of British metal coming out in the late
    70's early 80's, not the typical Iron Maiden, Judas Priest crap, but
    something more aggressive and hard core neo-punkish and decided that if
    they don't get a similar style going soon they will not be successful.
    Metallica got really popular after touring for so many years. Venom's
    first tour was in 83 supporting ' At War With Satan ' with Metallica,
    Slayer, and Raven ( anyone hear of Raven?) AWWS was their 3rd album.
    Metallica and Slayer had only one album each at the time and Raven's
    album wasn't out yet.
    So tell me guys, did Venom start this tpye of metal or what?

    Wrong, Raven would have had two albums available circa 83, "Rock until 
    you drop" and "Wiped Out", but perhaps not available in the US unless
    on import. The first effort was excellent but let down by bad
    production/engineering (the sound was far too home produced and
    one dimensional) and the band's infantile utterances/belches etc
    before, during and after songs was a real minus. 
    
    I still play it occasionally, mostly for "Don't Need Your Money" and 
    probably the best Sweet cover version ever, a back to back rendition
     of "Hellraiser" and "Action". Not long after I remember Krokus doing 
    a rather aneamic and feeble cover of "Ballroom Blitz" which added
    nothing to the original.
    
    As for "Wiped Out"; the difficult second album and really a waste of
    time. Same type of production but without the songs to redeem it. After
    that they set their sights on America, got perms, and quite rightly 
    descended into oblivion.
    
    If you're talking about one seminal influence that spwaned Speed/Thrash/
    Black metal then you've got to consider the grand-daddies of it all,
    Motorhead. Still love 'em.

    Don't get me wrong here folks, Venom is not the end-all be-all band.
    After Possessed came out they sucked. I stopped listening to them
    after that album, but you gotta give credit where it's due.
    
    I still listen to the first 4 Venom albums(the only good ones) and
    actually bought The Best of... a few months back. It gives a brief
    history of the band. sorta interesting.

    But, since when has Metallica been Death Metal?  IMO they never have
    been, so why would Venom be a death metal influence on them?  I think
    Motorhead was more of an influence.  But even more than Motorhead, was
    Diamondhead and Budgie.
    
    How many cover versions of Venom & Motorhead songs have YOU heard

    I remember when Kill Em All first came out (which I bought back then),
    Kerrang et al were labeling the band as Speed/Death Metal.  Maybe it
    was the titles ... kill em all, creeping death, etc.

    I'm pretty sure old Burke Shelly would fall off his perch now if he was
    to here Budgie cited as influence on Death/Black/Canary-yellow metal.
    They were one of the bands covered by Metallica on the $1.98 or
    whatever EP were'nt they? and there really is'nt any more you can read 
    from it than that.
    
    They were more of an upbeat rock n roll band (especially near the end 
    with "Forearm Smash" etc) and there was hardly a doom-laden riff or 
    angst ridden, negative, lyric in sight. I remember them most for the 
    fact that their drummer fainted half an hour into the set at the 
    Marquee and they ended the show. I don't think we got a refund either. 8^)

    I saw an interview with Cronos and Abbaddon on New Music about 10 years
    ago and they said that it was the mags and critics were labeling the
    'new wave ' metal bands. Cronos said " They are even calling Black Sabbath
    'black metal' now." Black metal was the name of their 2nd album, not a
    music style, but the writers picked up on it and boom, a new label.
    So that leaves us with the fact that Venom was a fast, agressive music
    style that was adopted by Metallica and others. Motorhead was the same
    as was several other bands. 
    Labeling means nothing...influence means something...the music means
    all.

    No, I meant Budgie was an influence on Metallica, not Death/Black
    metal.  If Metallica were labeled as that in the early days, it
    probably *WAS* just because of their song names and because the words "die"
    and "death" were used a lot in their songs.
     
    They didn't sing about raising the dead and black masses and such.
    But Venom did.

    That itself doesn't make them non-influential.  But I seriously
    doubt that Venom, Slayer, Mercyful Fate, and the others had much
    influence on Metallica at all.  They all came out around the same time.
    Metallica's roots would go farther back than 1982 or whenever Venom
    came out.
    
    Again, Diamondhead was one of their biggest influences.  Listen to some
    stuff by them.  You can definately hear the similarities.
    
    In the "Cliff 'em All" video, they mention some of their influences.  I
    can't remember what they were, but I know there weren't any death metal
    bands on the list.  Someone jokingly mentioned ZZ-top, but that's
    the only name I remember.... maybe I'll play the tape again, and see

    Venom released their first album in early 81, before Metallica actually
    formed ( according to Larz in 'Cliff...' they formed in Sept. 81 )
    Larz gives a comment on Venom's 'In Memorium' saying " Welcome to Hell
    was a classic. Black Metal,Speed Metal,Death Metal-Venom started it all
    in 1981 with that one album."
    Venom was formed in 1979 in Newcastle, England.
    relased 4 studio albums and some live stuff.
    Mantas (guitar) left in 86.
    Two guitarist filled in. Mike H. and Jim C.
    Released 'Calm before the storm' in 87.
    Cronos (bass,vocals) left in 89 and took Mike H. and Jim C.
    Mantas rejoined with a new bassist and vocalist Tony (demolition
    man)Dolan
    released Prime Evil in 91.
    released Temples of Ice in 92.

    Reading Buck's previous comment reminded me of two jokes I
    used to hear reference to on WBCN. The first is Athol related:
