| | I can assume that this is the same band that did "We Care A Lot"? That was a
great song, and their first album was OK, although nothing special. I haven't
heard their second - sounds like they improved a lot. They are a Boston band,
btw.

Yeah. If I remember correctly, they come from the Midwest somewhere - maybe
Chicago? But just about when the first album was released, they transplanted
the whole band to Boston. I met them a few times, and saw them at some of the
local clubs (Paradise, Rat, etc.). They're pretty cool guys, and I liked them
more live than on record.

Expect to see alot more of the out of state bands to move into places
like Boston. With the total saturation of L.A. , bands have to
find elsewhere to call home. I don't think it's wrong at all, and
if more bands want to come to Boston and they are anything like
FNM, than I'll even help them move in!

    FNM? I love 'em!

I bought Introduce Yourself when it came out about eighteen months
back. The songs are great, but let down by Chuck Moseley's vocals
(the guy couldn't hold a note if it had a handle on it).

Moseley was subsequently sacked and a new guy, Mike Patton, was
brought in. He is one sh!t-hot vocalist.

I saw them at the Marquee a couple of weeks ago - an incredible
gig, the sound started lousy but was fixed by the third number.
Patton is not only a great vocalist, he is one hell of a good front
man - seriously off his head.

This band deserves to be very big indeed. In a time when we are
bombarded with endless Kiss/Aerosmith/Guns 'n' Ponces clones, we
    need more bands like FNM.

I heard a tune by FNM on WBRU this morning... I can't remember
what it was called... but it sounded VERY much like GREAT
    Funk-rock-slap-as* RHCP-vein music...
the song was great. If you weren't told it was FNM, you'd think
it was RHCP, only the song had more emphasis on ROCK than funk,
but with Anthony Kiedis-style rap vocals, and style.

    I'm buying it.

| | I popped the FNM into my cassette deck on the way to work this morning. Only
got to hear three songs sofar, but I was impressed - these guys are awesome!
All three songs were really original, mixing various influences and styles of
music. And none of them sounded like each other!
I hear a bunch of different influences - Alice Cooper's flair for the
dramatic, rap's use rhythm and rhyme, layered production like The Cult's first
album, lotsa reference points.
I'll post more after I hear the rest, and a few more times......

| 728.13 | quite good | KETJE::VLASIU |  | Thu Apr 26 1990 04:07 | 22 |
| | Since yesterday I have "The real thing" CD. I've listened it first in
the evening with the headphones. The first 2 tracks ("Out of nowhere"
and "Epic") were already in video clip version and knowing them I
enjoyed to listen easily. But the production (recording especially) is
not the best. They have much fantasy, potential for a real heavy metal
band, good vocals and keyboards. They have to precise a little their
direction. The title track impressed me little because it's too long
for what it really contain as music. Finally I started to skip within
the songs and ended the listening with a good but less than expected
impression. I thought I was tired and checked Titan Force to verify.
No, I was not tired because I listened twice (also on headphones) Titan
Force. So it was not the fatigue but Faith No More who tired me.
I listened again this morning "The real thing" via the loudspeakers and
it worked much better. They are really good but the CD seems not so
equal on all its length. In any case it's interesting to listen.
"Falling into pieces" (if I remember well) is very good heavy and
"Zombie eaters" is also one of the bests with the first two tracks.
Good cover of Black Sabbath's "War pigs".
I recommend it, but listen before if possible (the video clips have
done very much for this album).

| | Faith No More are:
Mike Bordin - Drums
Roddy Bottum - Keyboards
Bill Gould - Bass
Jim Martin - Guitar
Michael Patton - Vocals
The album 'The Real Me' is just blowing me away!!!! This has to be the best
metal album I've heard since 'Operation:Mindcrime'!
Seems that most bands build their sound from the guitar up - the guitar are
the basis for each songs, provide the melody, and push the song along. There
are exceptions - for example, I think that Queensryche builds from the drums
up. Its hard to explain, but I think that some of you will know what I mean.
Anyways, Faith No More seems to build there songs from the bass up, which is
quite unusual (unless you're Yes or somebody like that!). The bass lines are
real funky, and are pivotal to the arranging of each song. The drums and
guitars are fairly ordinary, and the vocals are an aquired taste (although
I've ended up loving them!). But the bass playing is the real cornerstone of
this band.
Songs of 'The Real Me':
From Out Of Nowhere
Epic
Falling To Pieces
Surprise! You're Dead
Zombie Eaters
Edge Of The World
The Real Thing
Underwater Love
The Morning After
Woodpecker From Mars
War Pigs
I'm only familiar with the first side so far, but I'll comment on this. "From
Out Of Nowhere", "Falling To Pieces", and "Surprise! You're Dead" are the
closest to heavy metal, but they also have a tinge of funk thrown in. "Epic"
is a cool rap song, with a pop chorus. These early songs remind me most of
Blue Oyster Cult, if you're looking for a comparison, but they really should
stand on their own. "Zombie Eaters", despite its wierd name, is mostly a
mellow tune - there's a bit of metal in the middle, but its pretty melodic.
And "Edge of the World" is a total change - its sort of cocktail piano/pop
(sort of like Joe Jackson's 'Night Out' album), and quite a beautiful song!
I haven't really listened to the second side that much yet, but their version
of "War Pigs" is pretty cool (although maybe a bit too much like the original
- its almost note-for-note).
This album isn't for everyone. But if you like your metal a little different
from the mainstream, and with a bit of funk to it, check this out! I don't
think you'll be disappointed!

| | I have The Real Thing, and it's great.
I've also seen their vid for Epic.
Michael Patton STEALS MUCH of his stage act from Anthony Kiedis
(RHCP). I'm not picking nits... you can't be much more unique
than Anthony, and Patton blatantly rips off Anthony's goofy
faces, hand movements and jumping around..
    BUT
You can't say this band isn't original!! The song EPIC has
Patton funk-rapping exactly like Anthony, but it's a
phenomenal song. Also Zombie Eaters has to be my favorite track.

The guitarist for this band used to play in a band with

    connection.

    Copied from Kerrang! without permission

    Reading Festival Friday.

FNM appear on stage just moments before darkness falls and lurch into
From Out Of Nowhere with the usual sound problems that seem to spoil
    that song everywhere they play.

For the next hour and 10 minutes the only place worth being in the
whole of England is down the front at Reading . Arms and legs flail
wildly as the band reel out a virtually unchanged set and a kilted
patton bounces around pulling faces - but thankfully he avoids the
silly voices that ruined Surprise You're Dead and a few others at
    Brixton.

No doubt you'll hear reports of how the sound wasn't quite up to
scratch and how the band could do with writing soome more tunes, but if
you were one of the shitfaced thousands chanting "You Fat Bastard!",
    you'll know this doesn't matter.

My only complaint is that FNM get you all fired up and ready to party,
thn open their encore with Easy Like Sunday Morning. But even Building
Society adverts can be excused when they break into War Pigs and Patton
sings, "Generals gather in their masses, just like me they hate Black
Sabbath", before disappearing up the scaffolding like a monkey (nice
view up his kilt! Flip) with a firework up his arse.

Only death can stop FNM now, and even that would have a hard time.

| | Caught Faith No More as the opening act for Billy Idol last Saturday night
at Great Woods. They were awesome!!!!
They opened with "From Out Of Nowhere", right into "Falling To Pieves". They
seemed to almost all of the new album, including "Epic", "Suprise, You're
Dead", and "Edge Of The World". The only thing I wish they would have done
that they skipped was "Zombie Eaters", but that's no big deal.
The covers were a riot - they did the Nestle's commercial - the one that goes
"creamy white......". Too much! And when they came out, Mike says "OK, we're
gonna play that cover that you've all been hearing so much about. Its a
death-metal song, by the band Slayer". And then they proceeded to play The
Commodores "I'm Easy", complete with full harmonies and a note-for-note solo!
Mike Patton is out of control onstage! He's a riot to watch! I realized how
ordinary a guitarist Jim Martin is, but that's ok 'cause it fits the band.
The bass player, Bill Gould, seemed to be the best musician on the stage,
and the other guys were pretty tight also (the keyboard player reminded me
of Jon Lord, the way he was rockin'!).
BTW, for you guitarists - Jim Martin was playing through a Boogie head, into
Boogie power amps, into (3) Marshall 4x12 stacks. And while I'm at it, the new
guitarist for Billy Idol played through Marshall heads into (1) Marshall 4x12
and (3) Marshall 4x10s. (And it was pretty funny, because he was playing a
Steve Stevens model Hamer!)

tricks of the music world... Keyboards are used very frequently by
bands that you would never think of. Most of them are hidden from the
crowds. One of these bands being Iron Maiden.

from an article on Billy Idol in concert, from Rolling Stone magazine
    (FNM opened - New Jersey)

...Faith No More turned in an admirable set, and it couldn't have been
easy. The band was crowded onto the lip of the stage to make room for
Idol's equipment and played to an audience made up largely of MTV pod
people - most of whom remained rooted to their seats until they heard
the opening strains of "Epic." Despite this, Faith No More refused to
be intimidated. Ringleader Mike Patton carried on in typical fashion,
hanging off the edge of the stage and baiting the crowd with New Jersey
slurs, and, in the evening's most interesting moment, asked a
prepubescent girl - with Dad in tow - if she'd ever seen a grown man
naked. "Wanna come up and sing a song with me?" Patton asked, to mend
fences. "Come on, I'm not gonna hurt ya."

He seemed genuinely perplexed when she declined.

in on your little niece or nephew while the tape was running,
did you notice that there was a familiar tune running through
the flick? Did it sound just a little bit too close to the
melody line of the Faith No More song, "We Care A Lot?" Well,
according to bandmember Roddy Bottum, they didn't know until
much later that their tune had been nicked for the kiddie
film. "We thought it would be too late to do anything about
it," he shrugged. Besides, nobody wantes to go down in
history as the band that sued the Care Bears."

As a drummer, I can say this. This guy DOES pound! He hits hard and
heavy and that's great, but he also has good dynamics too. He knows
when to kill and when not to. I like his style, he's clean
and solid, not a speedomatic... and he's a madman!

Aren't they all! I think they are a breath of fresh air blowing
through the HM/rock world. They have the courage to create a new sound
and try to incorporate new styles (rap etc.).

I just hope that they continue to break new ground and improve. Hope
that they don't fall in love with themselves and lose direction and
    credibility. Only time will tell.

I think a new album would be a great idea at this time, instead of

Due to the recent lack 'o traffic on this note, I thought I'd
    toss in my $.02.

A friend of mine in San Jose has been a big Mr Bungle fan for years
and still follows them pretty regularly. He's also seen FNM a few
    times.

He and I both agree that that Moseley character wasn't that great.
I saw FNM around 87 or so at the Edible Rex in Billerica, MA when
Chuck was still the front man. They were so-so. I saw them again
a few years later with Patton up front and the show was incredible.

My friend claims that he got hurt by Mike Patton once. He was up
near the stage and got his attention diverted for a few seconds.
When he looked up, it was just in time to see Mike Patton's
psychotic grin in his face as he stage dove right on top of my
    friend.

Also, did anyone else hear about Mike Patton getting busted recently
in Buffalo for allegedly exposing himself on stage and sticking
    a microphone up his butt?

Are they Patton's personal harem? He's a strange character he is.
I've read a few interviews with him in the UK press and the subject
matter usually covers his bizarre tastes and love of bashing the
bishop in preference to getting it together with the laaayyydies.
    Good video.

| | Because I haven't completely liked their previous CD, I have hesitated to buy
Angel Dust. This was an error. AD is, IMHO, their best album to date.
Heavier than previous works, it has more direction and is also better recorded.
Keyboards are really great and everything works fine. The last two covers,
Midnight Cowboy and Easy are also fine although surprising from the rest
of the album. One of my favourite tracks is Smaller and Smaller, a heavy killer
song. Well recommended !

| | Hi guys,
Well I think that the last album really sucks. The Real Thing
was such a breakthrough that any following-ups was meant to be surely
    not that good.
However I have to admit that Angel Dust confirmed FNM as one of
the most innovative, dynamic and fluent bands around.
So, this is why the last album disappointed me so much.No more
innovative stuff but only commercial songs, heavily based on grunge &
    whatever sells.
I jut wanted to know if U agree with me or I'm just being too
    harsh ...
    		Shake.

I don`t agree at all. "King for a day..." exceeded all my expectations.
It is innovative, it is funky and it has power. I think it`s brilliant.

| | I agree with note 148, I think that Faith-no-More opened up a jazzy
side to themselves. Yet they still rocked out a few songs. I like to
see diversity in a band's talents and I believe that F-n-R has done
    that.
