Got the changer fixed and back in the Beretta, what's in it is as
follows:
Tiamat - Wildhoney
At the gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings
Doctor Butcher - Doctor Butcher
Varga - Prototype
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses (2nd release)
Cathedral - Cosmic Requiem
White Zombie - La Sexorcisto Devil Music Vol. 1

And a few brought in to while away the time while I work on a document:
Nevermore - Nevermore
Crimson Glory - Transcendence
and a compilation cd called Identity II which has tunes from Nevermore,
Eyehategod, Trouble, Chum, Sentenced, Samael, Stuck Mojo, Emperor,
Toxic Reasons, Merauder, Only Living Witness, The Gathering, Moonspell,
Punky Brewster (that's right), Hostility, Release, My Own Victim, and
454 Big Block. And it is actually pretty good, mostly heavy stuff.

This chick is a genius! It's circa 1990, but it's timeless...She's
pretty wild lookin' too. She's wearing this white lacey ensemble on

My sister and I went to the Aku Aku the other night, and since
I'm a nice guy I usually try to bring "neutral" music when
someone else is in the car, so I listened to "Back to the 80's"

tracks].
Well, I started, anyways ... I'm still listening to the rest
of "Totally 80's". Great stuff!!
"Word Up", by Cameo, is 1 of the better surprises on there.
Do they have other good stuff, or was this their only good 1?

little variation with what she does. MMMM, she's very pleasant to look
at. But that song on "Twister", it makes me tap my toes. I like the
harmony vocals ( I think done by her husband/producer, Mutt Lange)
especially when they do that falsetto(sp) thing there towards the end.

Merauder - Master Killer
Moonspell - Wolfsheart
Cemetary - Sundown
Tiamat - Wildhoney
Amorphis - Elegy
Jean Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger
4 others in the changer....
Cemetary aren't what you might think with a name like that. They are
pretty much heavy metal with some keys added in. Not too bad either! I
had just heard about them recently and was searching for stuff that
looks like I will hafta order cuzz they don't have them at Newbury
Comics near me..... ;-( Probably be ordering a couple more Tiamat
discs, Clouds and The Astral Sleep most likely....I like this band!
Jean Luc Ponty, can't get enough of Cosmic Messenger, excellent bass
player, guitarist and drummer during that time period. Very good disc,
highly recommended for anyone who likes electric Violin in jazz. Some
perky stuff, plodding stuff (title song is AWESOME!), very good! A
taste for passion, civilized evil, mystical adventures are also very
good by mr. ponty.

I picked up "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by Santa Esmeralda
and listened to it this morning ... 1 of the best covers ever
done, although being done "disco style" automatically means
that 99% of you won't like it. 8^)
They also do a fairly straight-forward cover of Van Morrison's
"Gloria" [the same 1 covered by The Doors].

Much better than "Chill Pill" [found BOTH of them at Straw-

moving album.

Well after I almost confused "Yngwie J. Malmsteen" for a different
Yngwie Malmsteen, I started to appreciate that kind of attention to

You FINALLY got the 1st Tragically Hip album?
And I say that Brian Setzer Orchestra CD in a music store at
Emerald Square on Saturday but didn't feel like spending $18
on that OR his previous album. So I bought "Rock You to Hell"
by Grim Reaper instead for $5 or so less. 8^)
The $18 price tag was the same reason I didn't buy "Flat as a
Pancake" by Head East.

Woo, I'm going to Emerald Square! I'll spend $18 to upgrade my
vinyly FAAP, no problem! That LP roolz!
Btw, both BSO's were $11.99 at Newbury. You should know better
than to buy CD's in a mall... :^) Although, the new Slimy Pond
Mall is getting an HMV records - wonder if that will be as good as
the one in Cambridge?
Hey, btw, is it worth going to look for Raging Slab's new one
today? Isn't this the day it's out?

[grumble]
So I thought, by reading CDNow's "preorder" thing. But it
appears that Newbury Comics doesn't list it as being out
yet, so I'm not sure.
I was at the mall because my father's wife [I hate to call
her my stepmother, since the image of Hansel and Gretel's
stepmother always pops into mind] was buying me clothes this
w'end and I figured I'd zip in and see what they had. I
figured the $12 or so for the Grim Reaper CD wasn't too
bad, but I also figured that $18 was too much for FAAP.
I've never heard the album, although I think "Never Been
Any Reason" might have been worth it alone.
I'll probably stop at Newbury Comics tonight and check it
out anyways, in case they do have the new Raging Slab al-
bum and just sort of forgot to mention it. If you're
planning on swinging by also, let me know and I'll meet
you there.
And remember ... ALWAYS check the bargain bins. 8^)

I do not know anything about Skepticism. I've read good remarks about
Dominus' previous CD but I haven't heard it.
I've heard also good things about a progressive american band,
Porcupine Tree. I've listened a bit in a shop and it was not bad at
all. If you have the occasion, Cynic's "Focus" is also quite good.

re: .392
I have Cynic's Focus, it is *ok*, I think it would sound MUCH better
without the synthesized vocals....some jazz influences on a couple
parts of some songs. It's ok, but those vocals get to me after
awhile....not bad otherwise.....Dominus, Dominus, Dominus, HEY! Can I
have a Garlic crust crunch pizza with pepperoni to go??!

| Re. Mike
Yes, the synthesized vocals are quite much used and the lead vocals are
just ok. Their strongest point is the instrumentals played rather fast.
The first song is the best for me.
Dominus is heavier and punchier .. and also better ;-)

Based on your listening habits, I think you'd like Porcupine
Tree. If you like the electronic/neo-psychedilic/spacy sound
like Tangerine Dream, Ozric Tentacles, or Pink Floyd, you really
can't go wrong with Porcupine Tree. Recommended discs are:
Sky Moves Sideways, Up the Downstair, & Staircase Infinities.

| Secrets of the Muse - Jordan Rudess
Listen - Jordan Rudess
Wow! My first thoughts are these are "Keyboard Renaissance"
and "Rob has GOT to hear this"
This guy is the first keyboard player to come along in ages
that really blows me away. It's hard to say what it "sounds like"
but I'd be surprised if any fan of Dream Theater didn't like
this stuff. Doesn't sound like Dream Theater (hardly any guitar)
but it's that 70's progressive musical values in a 90's context
thing.
Jordan Rudess is not only an incredible player/musician, but he
also seems to have the "synthesist" chops down (designing/choosing
great synthesizer sounds for the musical context).
The Woman in Me - Shania Twain
Sorta seems weird to rave about a prog-rock technical wizard and
then follow it with a female country artist, but I really like
this album. She's a great singer, and she's got some really
good songs on this album, but I'm also impressed by the production.
Unfortunately, JJ didn't loan me the album cover (afraid I would
get drool on it I suppose) so I don't know who produced or played
on the album, nor who wrote the songs (does Shania write?)
Favs: Any Man of Mine, Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? If

Kula Shaker - "K"
Far out man! Take a little of that that Ravi Shanker, Syd Barrett
style transcendental thing, add a healthy dose of British power-pop
guitar, and top it off with tooling Hammond B3, and you got Kula
Shaker. I had to buy this after 'BCN simulcasted the Avalon concert.
Upbeat, fun, great music. Anyone who covers "Hush" and adds more B3

I only listened Theli once and I was very well impressed. I like it better
than LK. Much classical singing and choirs, a bit in the style of Carmina
Burana (but heavy metal however). You should like it.
Re. Anathema, I've listened their previous which was very doomish and
with rougher vocals. It was good but too slow and depressive for my
taste. "Eternity" is much better for me.

The Bill Hicks "Arizona Bay" thingy? Is that a comedy album?
The reason I ask is cause the group TOOL speaks very highly of Bill
Hicks and in one of their songs they mention "Learn to swim, we'll see
you down in Arizona Bay." This of course would only happen if
California sunk into the Ocean as the song imply's.
They also use a very small portion of his routine in the begining
of one of their songs called "3rd eye".
Just curious,
J

| Arizona Bay is one of the two brand new albums of Bill Hicks material since
his death. His friend, Kevin Booth from Austin put the new releases
together, with Bill's mom as executive producer. It's been a long wait since
his death, but the albums are worth every penny. You NEED to buy them. Arizona
Bay is my personal favorite, with Rant in E Minor a close second, they
are edgier than the other two, Relentless, and Dangerous, though all are
brilliant.
Tool's admiration of Hicks seems to border on worship. Hicks' opinions and
bits on politics, society, America etc. seem to dominate their music, bordering
on plagiarism.
Friday in Austin, there's a release party with KLBJ, with Kevin Booth, and
Tool attending.
The fact that Bill's mom (executor of his estate) is executive producer of
the albums is kind of funny, and was a bit of a pain in the a&& for Booth.
She's a fundamentalist Christian, and Kevin had to get her okay on all
material for the albums... bits about Jesus, pornography, fundamentalist
Christians, drug use, etc.

| After a first (and partial) listening it sounds fine. The singer has a
normal voice (recalling, maybe, in few parts the singer from The Cult)

melodies. I don't know their previous stuff but apparently this one

;-) Mike, actually I am not exactly a generic death/gothic metal fan but
those genres, together with progressive metal, are the main trends in
today's heavy metal. I like some alternative and grunge things but I
haven't explored too much this area.
There are tons of death/gothic/doom/etc metal bands but I like only
some of them.
Here are some of the bands or CDs I don't like at this moment (a matter of
taste):
Paradise Lost (although I like few of their songs), Craddle of Filth
(impossible vocals), Slayer's latest 2 CDs and "Hell awaits", Danzig's
last CD, gore metal bands in general, and the list may go on and on..
The CDs I have recommended are recommended as top heavy metal and not
limited to a genre (however in some cases you have to like the rougher
or lower range vocals).

Nevermore - The politics of ecstasy
Pain - Pain (Hypocrisy, lighter vocals, heavy stuff)
Peaceville comp. - Blood Divine, Autopsy, Vital Remains, etc...
My Dying Bride - Like gods in the sun (like new Anathema!)
Sentenced - Down (new singer is close to original)
Nevermore is technical and thrashy, sounds good so far but haven't
listened to it completely yet. MDB has clean singing now! He sounds
sort of like the guy from Anathema which surprised me. Pain is Peter
Tagtgrens project and has vocals mixed and not very heavy but the music
is reminisque(sp) of Hypocrisy's last two releases. Sentenced new
singer is close to the original but a bit different. The Peaceville
compilation has some decent stuff on it, Anathema, The Blood Divine,
Autopsy, Pitch Shifter, Vital remains, Morta Skuld, and a few others (I
didn't bring the cases in....) and is mostly good, some heavier stuff
with Autopsy/PS/MS singers. Vital Remains surprised me because the
vocals are not brutal like I was expecting when talking to Dle about
them (what about them Carlos??). Sorin, pick up the new MDB, if you
like Eternity by Anathema, you'll like this one! He doesn't sound as
forlorn as Anathema's singer (who's pretty good for this genre), but it
really surprised me compared to Trinity by MDB (their first 3 EP's
together on one disc). I still haven't been able to get TBD or
Skepticism's discs yet....I will probably have to special order
them....BUT on order Death is just the beginning...IV and Chris
Franke's Raven are on order (Chris Franke was part of the 3 guys in

should see them by saturday or monday at the latest I hope!

Mike: I don't think I have heard the "countess" song from VR, but
the stuff I have is pretty brutal if you ask me. It's not an "all out
speed" death or black, but IMO it definitely has traces of both. I
don't know exactly how Dle categoreizes the band, but the 3 I have are
pretty brutal indeed.
I'm interested in the Chris Franke. I have pretty much ALL of TD's
output and that's a band I would really like to see live, at least
playing all of their 70s stuff.
Let me also know about pain, as Hypocrisy is one of my faves.
I'm glad you liked Grave, I really dig them too.
And if you just can't find stuff brutal enough for you, Dle just
told me Vital Remains is touring with Incantation. That SHOULD be
brutal!!

re: .59
Yo Carlos,
Hmm, I will look for VM when I get a chance. I listened to all of MDB's
Angel and the Dark River, had a bonus extra CD! Live at the Dynamo '85
and is ok, drums are miked a bit high and violin is a bit in the
background. Hey, for free, what the hell! $14.27 for the disc at CDNow.
Not bad for 2 in one! Heard most of Grave, a bit on the brutal
vocal-wise (what do you expect with a name like that! ;-) ).
My Dying Bride - Angel and the Dark River
My Dying Bride - As the flower withers (death vocals)
Anathema - Eternity (can't get enough of em!)
Rollins Band - Come in and Burn (kicks!!!! GET IT!)
Grave - Soulless
Christopher Franke - Raven, tv series
Rotting Christ - Triarchy of the lost lovers
Carlos, I am surprised you are into Tangerine Dream! That wasn't
expected! Their stuff from the mid to late 70's is really cool, and
into the 80's as well. Their real early stuff is sorta psychedelic acid
tripping sounding IMO, Atem, Zeit, the Collectors edition, Electronic
Meditation, etc...but I love Green Desert, Le Parc, Thief, Underwater
Sunlight, et. al....I haven't gotten too much of their later stuff (I
do have Rockoon, Melrose, Canyon Dreams, etc.... We should start a note
but they aren't heavy metal. Maybe we can chat in the "Favorite
non-metalist" note? Let's go there!

Yup, forgot about "Grateful ...". I'd already loggedd off by the
time I got to it.
So far, after a little more than one listen, that's the highlight
on this album. Even a little bit of that "wocka wocka" guitar
sound we ["we" probably only being me and you, Sean 8^)] know
and love from the 70's.
You know who these guys remind me of? Blind Melon. So far.

Blind Lemon? Hmmmm.
To me, they are more like a mix of Syd Barrett, Charlatans UK,
and maybe George Harrison.
I actually like the "Govinda" and "Tatva" - they're the unique
cuts that set off the CD. I'd love to see them open for the Moody
Blues this summer, just for those songs. Ommmmmmmm.....
"Start All Over" is a great pop song, I don't care what anyone
says.
And that "wocka wocka" sound roolz! Every band should do one
song with one!
Btw, their new single, a cover of Deep Puple's "Hush" (didn't
DP actually cover that from someone else?) is #2 in UK.

My Dying Bride - Like Gods of the Sun (clean vocals)
Anathema - Eternity (clean vocals)
Grave - Soulless (heavy death style vocals, cool though!)
Rollins Band - Come in and Burn (LOVE first song - Shame)
Still in the doom/death/hard-edge music mode! (When does that ever
change!). Those looking to hear some Doom style metal should check out
the above 3 for some excellent tunage. I am really impressed with those
3 discs! I really like them and want to get more Anathema.
The other MDB that I have (Trinity (first 3 EP's on 1 disc) and As the
Flower Withers) have the death style vocals but still doomy, so I guess
you can call it DoomDeath!

excellent with clean vocals like Anathema. Good picks! I need to find
out if the other one I don't have is like these two or with the death
style vocals (As the flower withers has them along with the 3 ep
trinity disc I have). Therion is ok, but I am not that much into them,

Morgion - Among Majestic Ruin
Edge of Sanity - The Spectral Sorrow
Black Mark Attack - Black Mark Attack Vol. 1
Morgion is low end guitar, low end vocal death metal with some
atmospheric sound due to keyboard usage. At least mostly intelligible
vocals with some higher end screams and a few low end growls for all
you Death Metal fans! It is a 5 song EP (I guess) clocking in at 34
mintues. Quite heavy, but Sorin and Carlos would like it. I think they
have some other material out.
EoS is typical EoS on this release, which I think is their 3rd release
out of 5. I was looking for the new one, Infernal, and found this
instead!
Black Mark Attack is out in 2 volumes, I think the other one might be
Black Metal music, I will have to check again, this one has EoS,
Memento Mori, Yosh, Necrophobic, Bathory, Divine Sin, Cemetary, Tad
Morose, Aggressor, and Lake of Tears. LoT, Tad Morose, Divine Sin sound
quite good, not yer normal DM you see me listen to! Bathory was a
surprise as I expected them to be very hard, but I think they are
termed "War Metal" type of music. And to top this off if you look at
the logo on the disc it looks like a demons hand doing the metal finger
salute but the ankh (what I think it is/represents) is VERY similar to
Queensryches logo more seen on Promised Land and O:MC I think.

on all parts. All instrumental, although there is some singing by
Collins on other discs (Product - Soho and Don't make Waves). They put

'Evil Empire' isn't bad, but it takes a REALLY long
time for any rap-influenced music to grow on me. I've
seen lots of folks rave about them in here, so I thought
I'd give 'em a chance. Can't say I love them, but the
non-rap features (the music!) are good.
STP's latest is amazing! I've never been a fan of the
Seattle/grunge sound, including most STP. A friend loaned
me 'Tiny Music..' a while back, and I was hooked. They're
more talented than I ever expected them to be. What I like
is the diversity of styles on this album.

Steve, if you like Rap metal, check out a band called Stuck Mojo, 4
dudes that can crank some heavy metal with rap style vocals. I don't
have any of theirs at this time, but might go for their debut "Snappin'
Necks". They are on Century Media, have a newsletter, etc...fairly
heavy. I heard them first on Identity II compilation from CM, then got
the first one, which IMO are MUCH heavier/better tunes by them on it
(2 on the first Identity disc) than on Identity II. They have 1 tune on
Identity....3D which isn't my favorite. Identity I has better tunage by
them I believe off their initial debut. Punchy/gritty/heavy dual/triple
vocal rap stuff.

speakers out if you aren't careful with the volume level (then again,

great starter song for the disc, overall it is excellent and shows that

Ah, what are you thinking of as their first release?? I hope you don't
think it's "The End of Silence" because you are about 3 discs off if
so. I have "Turned On" which is a live disc of 1 track (unless you can

called I think "joyriding with frank" and its a cool jammin tune!, and
another one that I can't think of the title off the top of my head, and
it is much rawer and punker/angrier/stranger I guess you can say. I do
like Hard Volume though for tracks 1 and 2, and of course the last
track! I really like this new one, I think he could reach a wider
audience with this release. I still like TeoS over Weight also, but
Weight has some good tunes (Shine, Liar, Disconnect, song after liar).
Opeth though is cool! Last track (as Sorin mentioned) is excellent if a
bit short compared to the other 4 tracks.

You like that one?
I can't stand the singer's voice ... I think I actually understood a
word or two here and there, and you know how much that irks me.
And he sounds like he's gargling on broken Corelle tea cups. If the
record company had ANY faith in the band whatsoever, it would have
invested in some nice Waterford crystal.

So ~pril, how's the Helmet? Does it leave an aftertaste!?!? ;-)
What's it like compared to say "Meantime" or "Betty"????
You need a dose of some REALLY heavy stuff! ;-) Can't wait to listen
to Edge of Sanity "Infernal" and Anathema "Pentecost III" along with
when I receive Winter's two releases "Eternal Frost" and "Into
Darkness". A guy on the internet loves this band, says "Crushingly
heavy doom metal, awesome stuff, you'll love it!". I've seen similar
posts from a couple/few others on this band and am taking a chance.

| .98 Mike, the new Helmet didn't do it for me. It's not all that bad, but
it doesn't compare to their previous release(s). His voice seems to
drone on and on and on top of that, the music is way too repetitive.

I think that's on "Greatest Misses".
Heck, let me go check.
Hmmm, it's on both "Greatest Hits" and "Greatest Misses". I guess
they wanted to make sure you got that song no matter which one
you bought.
If you have "Greatest Misses", crank up "Mongoloid". It ROOLZ.
One of their best, IMO. WAAAAAY back when, on "The Dr.
Demento Show", they played an old [possibly demo?] version of
Mongoloid that doesn't appear to be available anywhere that I
know of. But I think I have it on tape [used to tape the good stuff
off of the show] and I'm going to have to find it and listen to it
because it's better than the released version[s] that I do own.

So Max,
What do you think of the new Rollins Band disc "Come in and Burn"? I
personally like track 1 best, but overall I like the entire disc, just
track one really jumps out overall. Sort of like track one of TEOS, or
the last track on the same disc (JUST LIKE YOU! my minds not my mind).
I wished he would have done that one live when I saw him! He was
intense though, to say the least!

DEVO is on Lollapaloser this year.
Both their first 2 albums are pure masterpieces, but the second one "Duty
Now For The Future" reigns supreme (Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA is out of
control).
"Mongoloid" and "Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy" are both cool on the
debut - the original version can be heard on "Hardcore Devo" available
