If u want guitar-based, get some Santana ... pick up "Great-
est Hits" if u can find it. This guy cooks!! "Hope You're

Well, besides all these current speed demons everyone is recommending, I would
also suggst you check out a couple 'classics'.
Jeff Beck's 'Blow by Blow' and 'Wired' ablums laid a lot of groundwork for
future guitarist. These are both instrumental.
Ronnie Montrose ("Town Without Pity") also did some nice stuff, as does Carlos
Santana ('Moonflower' is a nice live/best of album). These have both
instrumental and vocal tracks on them.
Richie Blackmore does some real nice stuff, but I can't think of any one album
to recommend getting. Most of the good stuff is scattered through tons of
rubbish on the Rainbow albums.
Allan Holdsworth is also very good, although I'm not as familiar with his
stuff as I am with the previous ones I mentioned. I have 'Metal Fatigue' and I
enjoy that a lot.
I'm not sure if these guys are what you are looking for, but I thought I'd
mention them just for your info....

| 695.7 | John MacLaughlin | KDCFS1::FREEMAN |  | Fri Oct 06 1989 10:59 | 17 |
| | Speaking of Santana, there's an album which features he and another
great from the seventies, John MacLaughlin (not sure of spelling
of last name). Jimmy Page once said of him : "he's the best guitarist
in Britain and he's stuck working in a music store...". If you want
an instrumental and guitar-oriented album, check out "Birds of Fire".
MacLaughlin blows away 99% of guitarists out there today and this
album was released in 1973! We saw him execute this entire album
live in Toronto and the musicianship was flawless. The tempo was
stepped up on all the fast tunes which were already at a "Fight Fire
    with Fire" type meter.
He and Santana joined musical and religious forces to record the
"Love, Devotion and Surrender" album which is not bad but somewhat
cluttered in sections where the two are trading riffs back and forth.

| | Hello GTI, here I am.
Carlos Santana is definetely one of the best guitar players ever. He
played in the begining much harder rock than today. The Abraxas LP is
one of the best rock albums and has some hard rocking too. Borboletta
is also good but Caravanserai is better. I do not like very much the
late more commercial approach but he remains a genius of the guitar
(just listen him on the new Lee Hooker LP).
I also like Satriani but Santana succeeds better in slow playing with
its unique style (this is not a comparison as both are fine).
Dire Straits have also something to say about guitar playing.
