Yeah - the guitarist kicks *ss (on "Shout It Out", anyways).
I saw the video, and was gonna enter a note for 'em.
Are they "rap", or does it just sound similar?

I think they're trying to get this new type of rap-metal
into the forefront.
There's another band that Adam Curry was talking about
Saturday night, too. I can't remember who they were,
though.
I don't care for "Shout It Out" - I think they're just
trying to copy Anthrax's "I'm the Man" a little bit.

| RE .1.2
They're not rap-metal. that's just that 1 song. i think they kinda
have a style of thier own (or as much as possible for these days
who is really original lets face it) but as i said the album is
cool. the first song is entitled "BOP CITY" and for me anyway it's
one of those songs that sticks in my head all day long. There are
parts here and there where they throw in a little rap here and there
but i wouldn't go classifying them as the new rap_metal band. And
i really can't say enough for the guitarist. He isn't really just
another spazmatic the way he comes across in the video. He has alot
of really well placed riffs on the album. He's got it and he knows
how to use it unlike some of the so called heroes (bozo's) of this
day and age.
I give it a THUMBS-UP.

I hear the album's doing well over there - a friend of mine has
just visited California, and I asked him to pick up two cd's for
me (both of which are not available in England) - Babylon A.D. (which
he got for me) and Shotgin Messiah (which was sold out in quite
a few places so he says).
The tunes I've soon on MTV are great though.

| I've been listeningt to Shotgun's first for about two week straight
now and I'm completely AMAZED.
First off....I love the screaming of Zinny J Sans. He's one of the
best at that. (He's out now) 8(
Mr. Cody is such a FACKIN cooool guitarist.....He blows my mind.
The bass playerr Tim Tim..(Tim Skold now that he sings on their second
album) holds the peice together along with 'Sticks' the drummer.
Their music has GREAT personallity.
I find the NA,NA's extremely hilarious.
They do it twice on the album for the bridges of the songs.
My faves: BOP CITY....DON'T CARE ABOUT NOTHIN'.......SHOUT IT LOUD....
THE EXPLORER......I M YOUR LOVER.......TEASIN PLEASIN'.
I can't wait to buy their second album entitled SEX...Drugs..Rock &
Roll. I just hope it doesn't dissappoint.

I've seen several advertisements for the second album and I thought it
was called "Second Coming"?
I swiped Friz's copy of the first one at lunchtime today and haven't
hardly been able to keep my (junky) Walkman off my head! This is a
killer album!
I've been stearing away from listening to a lot of metal/heavy-rock
bands lately because they all seem to sound alike, and kind of stale.
But Shotgun Messiah is an amazing exception! They sound fresh and have
a lot of personality and energy, the things I think a lot of bands are
lacking these days. They'll be tops on my play list for awhile!
The guitar player is totally UNREAL!

with MegaDeth, I didn't like MegaDeth nearly as much UNTIL Friedman joined up !
I won't argue the Cody/Friedman thing with a drummer-dood.
:)
Cody is good - But he's a Vai-wanna-be who needs to smooth out his riffs
and work on his originality... I think he could do that by putting some heart
and sole into his playing, and forget about the speed thing. He should
listen to BB King for a month before he goes into the studio.
Translated to drummer-ease: Cody is fast, but he's got no soul. Or, at least
not much.

Well, I bought the first album and kinda liked it for a while but went
off it coz the songs where a bit weak.
I recently bought Second Coming and it is amazing!!!!
Harry K Cody has really wised up. He still burns better than the rest
but now seems to just sit back and groove rather than play a thousand
miles an hour. There are more double stop licks on this album than on a
Steve Ray Vaughan album (no offense, RIP etc..).
Tim Skolds voice took a bit of getting used, but he's a VAST improvment
on Zinny. Some rather amusing tongue in cheek lyrics too. Also, he uses
some effects very interestingly on his voice.
Stix is one awsome drummer and they've really got a HOT sound out of
his kit. Very raw and live sounding with a thunmderous bass drum.
As for the new bass player - what can I say ? Listen to track 9 "I
wanna know". It shreds.

I love it...It stirs all my emotions in a cool way which IMHO is what
music is all about.
EVERY SONG on this album is a fav. I don't think it hjas ANY filler
stuff on it at all.
I read it RIP that the band is homeless and made the album on
100,000 dollars. That includes food and equipment between their
last album which was years ago. Tim Skold dared ANY band to do an
album for that price and still retain the excellent quality of the
sound of their album.
GREAT BAND..GREAT NEW ALBUM=A Frizkid fan.

| A hundred grand??? Doesn't sound like a major bargain given the
current cost of things these days. I read in Mix this weekend that
record companies are expecting to get locked in to $600-$700/day for
a state of the art studio these days. By my calculations, $100K would
give them 4.5-5.5 months worth of studio time at those rates. If they
had their material together ahead of time, it shouldn't have to take
anywhere near that long to do an album.
I mean, Nirvana did their first album, Bleach, for $600. (This is just
for comparison, ok? Please, no inane comments about how much you hate
that band or whatever. I'm just pointing out that it *can* be done.)
It just kills me that people seem to have this mentality that says you
can't produce a decent album these days without spending a million
dollars! I think there's something wrong with this kind of thinking.

| ALL HAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!! The kings were in town! (Oh no! Hear comes the
Frizkid propaganda SM review) 8)
Let me start by saying:Denver sucks! We got lost for awhile....UGH!
THe Gothis Theater is a cool little venue that's out of the way
a bit. It made for a great setting...There was not a bad seat in the
house!
The band sounded excellent...Their sound wasn't ear-bleeding
loud but it was very well mixed. The did alot from the new album
and a few from the the first album. ( I was suprised that Tim sounded
as good as he did when doing the old material)
The inbetween stage chatter was at a minimum. Greg you wouldv'e loved
it. People were moshing and chicks were diving for the curly, blonde
headed dude. Tim also had this habit of trying to get some off the
side speakers which caused a loud feedback noise. Quite funny...
Hary Cody was VERY at home with the guitar and did a wonderful job.
Even though he looked like PlateHead from Texas Chainsaw Massacre with
that mohawk. 8) I was impressed with Stixx's playing back in the
back. He wasn't too visual but very solid....
In the end I was surprised they play as long as they did considering
they were the opening band. The played about an hour and a half!!
I didn't stay for Vinny Moore since he's just a guitar ego dude and
I don't get into that.
What really sucked is when I when to get a Shotgun MEssiah shirt and
they didn't bring anything! Not even a pin or poster.....WAH!
I thought that's how most small band make their money?
It was a great time and I suggest all of you go when they hit
your town.

IMVHO, Nuno only jams fast licks, often at the expense of music and
taste. Like the solo in Suzi is fast and shredding, but the whole
"neo classical" solo section just does NOT fit in with the rest of the
tune!! Harry Cody really plays tastefully within the songs context.
he knows how and when to rip it up, and when to lay back and play slow,
melodic stuff. Nuno also sounds like he's noodling to me, which is why
I prefer Harry's playing...it sounds MUSICAL.

| Ok, didn't see anyone at the SHOTGUN gig last night, so here was the
poop:
The band played most of the songs off of SECOND COMING, not *one*
song off their first album, and they did 4 cover songs! The set
kicked off with Nobody's Home, and ended with Babylon. Also included
were Sex, Drugs, R&R, Red Hot, Living Without You, Heartbreak Blvd,
I Want More, Ride The Storm, I Wanna Know, and Can't Fool Me.
They did a Sex Pistols cover (Liar), a Ramones cover (23rd & 3rd),
and some other punk band cover I totally didn't know. Their sound
was really rocked out...far less produced than on the album, which I
think where Cooper said they were "blowing chunks" live. They're
still a good band live...Stixx and Harry Cody both ripped. The singer
wasn't bad, either. Couldn't hear the bassist too well, I was on
HKC's side of the stage.
One point, this is one UGLY band!!! 8^( Although HKC has a mohawk
now, and Stixx cut off ALL his hair, and looks like ME now!
Not a bad gig. I was psyched to see HKC using the 5150 amp.

The bassist (Bobby Lycon) was cool. HKC was cool in spurts, but he
seems more intent on PLAYING cool than looking cool. He has stage
pres similar to that of Tracii Gun. The Drummer for this band is
great...fun to watch, and ROCK SOLID! The singer did his singer trip.

to go back to Sweden...The other guy was from NYC...so I dont know what
the story was with him.....They are in the process of auditioning new
members and are still scheduled to go into the studio and record their
next album....So it doenst look like the end to SM......

Wow ... both notes? 8^)

A drummer is a drummer. Well, not quite, but there's only
so much a drummer can add to a song. I'd bet they could
replace the drummer and you'd hardly notice it.

I have to REALLY disagree ... ANY band member is key to the band
and band sound. Could you imagine Dream Theater without John
Myung on Bass? Or Motley Crue without Tommy Lee? Or Rush without
Alex Lifeson?? I think you get the picture...

I think Harry is more replaceable than the rhythm section!!
Those two guys just LOCK IN together and really hold down the groove.
Most rhythm sections are so predicable but these two guys play
TOGETHER as opposed to over/under eachother.
Good guitarists are a dime a dozen.

The new album's release is coming soon. Its entitled "Violent New
Breed" and, according to Kerrang, blows "Second Coming" out of the
water. It didn't mention the replacements in the band but said there
were 12 tracks of pure gut wrenching aggression weaved through
accessable melodies. Kerrang gave it the KKKKK rating (the highest
rating possible) and said they believe it to be the best album of the
year.

I'm sure for this new album it's Tim Skold - vocals/bass
Harry Cody - guitars
and a drum machine programmed by the two of them.
Sounds like they got fed-up with bassist/drummer hassles.

Well the new album is out and it is er....different.
It has very strong punk and thrash influences but is very good
nonetheless. Some really powerful and aggresive tunes and my only gripe
is the effects used on Tims voice - sounds like he's singing through a
megaphone on most of it. Not much widdly diddly playing from Cody -
most of its down in the mix but what you can hear has the familiar wah
wah tone to it.
Overall its a great album but is very different to 'Second Coming'.

669.280 | SHOTGUN '93 Review | POWDML::BUCKLEY | violent new breed | Sat Nov 27 1993 09:46 | 47 |
| Caught SM last night at Local 186 (Formerly Bunratty's) --
First off, I am *so* glad Rob was wrong with his post they had broken
up, and the tour was cancelled!!!
Not sure what is up with the band -- they have replaced Stixx and Bobby
Lycon from the Second Coming album/tour with two non-descript,
unannounced players. Also very weird was the addition of a rhythm
guitarist to the band!?! The focal point of Shotgun Messiah, however,
remains to be singer Tim Skold and lead guitarist extrodinaire Harry K
Cody. The band has also adopted this really grungy, punk rock meets
seattle grunge image, but the other guitarist and the new drummer had
this rather flowing long blonde hair which, uh, just didn't "fit", you
know??
Some other HM noters here thought the show was ... "eh". The sound
system was really hurtin at Local 186, but to me they were thrashing
out punk rock, so it really didn't matter.
Here is the set they played:
I'm a Gun
Come Down
Jihad
Enemy in Me
Revolution
Violent New Breed
Rain
Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll
Monkey Needs
Encore:
I Come in Peace
Heartbreak Boulevard
So let's see ... that breaks down to be 9 songs off of VNB, 2 songs off
of SC, and 0 songs off of their first album, SM. I really wish they
would do some old stuff, like Nervous of Don't Care Bout Nuthin. When
I saw them on the SC tour, they didn't play anything off the first
album either, but they did throw in some punk rock cover tunes.
For the guitar players out there, Harry K is still using that les paul,
but has srapped the 5150 head he was using on the SC tour in favor of a
new rack system, featuring the Mesa-Boogie Tri-Axis preamp and a stereo
simul-class power amp!

| >TriAxis eh??
>
>So, what did you think of that most RULIN tone??
Harry had a pretty good grunge tone out of the Tri-Axis ... he wasn't
using any fx ... only had a cabinet emulator, wireless system, and power
source units in his rack other than the preamp and poweramp (which
probably helped his tone a lot). He was using one of those OLD
Mesa-Boogie 4x12 cabinets ... the real deep ones. I didn't think it
was a GREAT sound, but pretty good.
The other guitarist was using an old Charvel into an MP system (MP-1
and their power amp) running one of Harry's other old Mesa cabinets...
need I say that you couldn't hear him at all?!?

I listened again, and I still don't like it. The vocals are
TOO bad to ignore.
And the only thing I could think when I listened was that they
were going "industrial". The new album sounds like a "dirty"
Renegade Sound Wave, or Skinny Puppy.
