663.0. "Where to find gigs?" by HAZEL::STARR (DJ Bag Man and the Condom Crew) Mon Sep 11 1989 13:45

(I wrote this in MUSIC, but thought I would cross-post it, as there are lots
of readers here who don't follow the MUSIC notesfile. Please feel free to give
ideas, even if you are just a clubgoer!)

Well, as some of you know from DECjam, I play in a band called Sorry!. We have
been rehearsing for the past 6 months or so, and are now at the point where
we'd like to start playing some live shows. What I am looking for are pointers
from other musicians (or clubgoers!) on where to play in the greater Boston
area.

A little more info - we play covers, mostly consisting of "classic hits"
artists like Beatles, Stones, Who, Bruce, Led Zep, Fleetwood Mac, etc.. Mixed
in with these are 80's bands like Smithereens, Pretenders, Romantics, Police,
Bob Seger, Georgia Satellites, etc. Throw in a few oldies like Elvis Presley
and Chuck Berry, stir in a few hard rockers like Guns and Roses and Judas
Priest and you're getting close to our total list! Basically, it is a list of
upbeat, dancable rock and roll.

We are looking for bars/colleges/etc. where we can play. Our set list is 100+
songs long, so we can play for *hours* if need be. Money is always nice, and
we'd like to make something back on our dollars we put into it, but that is
not our *main* goal here (otherwise we'd be playing wedding music). (Besides,
I think the band members SO's would be much happier with our time invested if
they saw some $$$ coming in.... 8^). )

What I am hoping for from you people are listings of clubs that we might play
at. And if you know any more info such as phone numbers and people to contact
for gigs, then that would be great also!

The clubs can be anywhere from Providence/Cape Cod to Manchester/Nashua, and
anywhere inbetween!

Maybe we can use this note as a generic listing of clubs and bookers, for
other bands to use as reference as well!!!

thanx for any input,
Alan S.

    Alan,

My humble opinion is that you should faind yourself an agent. Let
him/her do the leg work. Better yet, get LOTS of agents !

It'll cost ya 10-20%, but it's worth it. This way yuo don't get
    burned by shysters.

re: .1

Thanx Pete! Also, what was the name of the place that KO and the Crunchberries
played at when Tony was in town? The one in Framingham. That seemed like my
kinda bar!

'Twas Timothy's. Pete has the number as he was the one that booked
     Chain Reaction there.

PS, The cable deal is a good one, but it takes a looooooong time
to get an edited version of the tape. I suggest that you contact
someone you know who is a musician who also videotapes bands
(like the Dumpster Bunnies) on the side ;-) ;-).

    RE: ALLAN/GUY

just call timII and ask for laura, she was the contact..

re. allan:[gigs] i was talking to rick @club77 awhile back and he
was saying something like getting two or three bands in there..
(in one night) and he would book them, i really didn't get him
clarify it at the time.. call him and ask him, hes a down to earth
guy..... tell him wendy says hi!

as far as the one in framingham they have the same bands over and
    over again, i should think they would be ready for a change ;^}

Good luck...there's about a million around...

    	For listings, get the following:

                    The BEAT
                    Boston Rock
                    Metronome
                    The NewPaper & The NicePaper
                    Phoenix

which just about covers from The Windjammer (southern RI coast)
to Sneakers (Salsibury Beach) and everything else in between...

I have these lists but have yet to determine all of the music that's
played at them..(have to keep calling)...most, beleive it or not,
are R&B...I assume that's due to space requirements/limitations..

Some great places in Norwich, Lyme and New Haven CT..

Agents are fine - but make sure you get paid for the gig or if not,
that the agent doesn't get a fee either...Watch out for agents with
more than 6-7 bands; they tend to make the bands "fight" for the
    better gigs.....

On gig deals - usual is Tickets - you get a buck for each one brought
in...Sometimes expenses (ie. $100-$200) to cover costs only, Guarantees
(usually $100-$250) which are increased if you pack the place...don't
pay to play unless there's a significant reason (REAL exposure,
    etc.) - Recent one I heard...Band buys 100 tickets @ $5 - (ie. $500)
then can sell them for whatever they want...this is for a shot at
opening for Danger Danger....however, what you can't sell, you eat.

Over all - 'specially if you make the connections to clubs yourself,
    be prepared to call...and call....and call....and call....and...

    Dave
