I've heard two of their albums, "The Legacy' and 'The New Order'.
I prefer the first album, but they are a good band - well worth
the buy.
Definitely Metallica influenced!

Testament are cool.... the New Order album is IMO the ballz....esp
Trial by Fire...great tune.
I've got all three albums....all are good. New order seemed
to show more of a musician type of writing...did that make sense...?
It has more slower acoustic stuff...which is good but the fast
stuf is good also.... I seem to be rambling so Au revior...

| I listened again this weekend "Practice.." making an effort to listen
it all. I don't know why but it lets me stone cold. Instrumentals
(solos) and voice are ok but the whole music has a bad effect on me. I
listened after it Nuclear Assault, Wargasm and Metallica and than I felt
well again. I think "Practice.." is slowed down thrash at the limit of
heavy. Are their other albums heavier ? (For example I like Metallica's
"Ride.." but I'm much less impressed by AJFA, and "Practice.." reminds
AJFA.)

| I had the occasion to listen a little "Souls in black". There is some
nice accoustic guitar, the overall sound seems heavier than
"Practice.." and the production quality is fine. But I still like
Forbidden's last much more than Testament. I think Testament goes fast
with until the moment the singer starts and they slow down or break
something in the rhythm (it's a pure subjective impression but I want
to realize why I'm not impressed by them as a whole band).
I think the new album will please all their fans.

|
661.61 | I donno... | GOES11::G_HOUSE | and I might be too far down | Wed Jun 26 1991 13:30 | 27 |
| I've been meaning to put a reply in here, as I recently picked up
Testaments latest, "Souls Of Black" and had some comments on it.
This is a good thrashin album, but it probably won't get a lot of play
time for me because there are some things that annoy me about it.
First off, I *hate* the guitar rhythm sound. It's like all thin, and
squeeky highendy. I like a good thrash guitar sound, like people like
Metallica and Megadeth get, but this is just raspy sounding. Sounds
kinda like the gross overdrive you get from a cheap solid state amp to
me.
Second, the guys voice bugs me too. I'm starting to get used to it,
but it reminds me terribly of Dave Mustaine.
Third (amazingly as it might seem) is Alex Skolnick's leads. The first
time I listened to the tape I thought "woah, this guy is smokin, this
is definately the high point of the album", and that's very true.
However, his tone and a lot of his leads sound *very* much like George
Lynch too me (esp. the one on the title track). He sounds like Lynch
might be today if Lynch had been practicing a *lot* since he left
Dokken, Skolnick definately smokes him. I just wish he had a little
more original sound, ya'know?
I probably won't buy any more of their stuff...

| I think Alex's GUITAR column is pretty good (so far). From what I
heard on Saturday, and from reading interviews with him, metal isn't
entirely his cup of tea. He's much more versatile than that.
BTW - I heard he's only 21 years old! Amazing.
|
661.63 | Yeah | GOES11::G_HOUSE | and I might be too far down | Wed Jun 26 1991 15:54 | 13 |
| Yeah, the Guitar columns are interesting, that's one of the things that
prompted me to check out the album.
I'd also read in an interview that he has a lot of different musical
interests, I'd hoped to hear a little more of his versatility on the
Testament album, but all I heard was a real good George Lynch clone.
Don't get me wrong, it's not all that bad really, there are several
solos that don't have that Lynch sound to 'em and I like those a lot
better. Skolnick is definately a great player, he plays some of the
smoothest fast arpeggio runs I've heard.

| When I saw Alex play with Test on the Test/'deth/Priest tour, I
didn't think he sounded like Lynch at ALL! If anything, I thought
he played a lot like early Vandenburg!
Although, I must say while Alex has chops for days, his solos left me
cold. Super-fast speed scales do not really turn me on (sounded like
a classier Impelliterri).
|
661.65 | Not like Impelliterri at all | GOES11::G_HOUSE | and I might be too far down | Wed Jun 26 1991 16:17 | 14 |
| Have you heard the album, Buck? I thought his solos had some substance
(not just scale stuff). Seemed to me like his use of different speeds
in the solos was pretty good too. Like I said in the first note I put
in, his solos were definately the highlight of the album, the rest is
not that great IMO.
Maybe I need to listen to it again for the Lynch thing, but I know that
one on the title track was *very* Lynch-esq! Maybe it just biased me
so that I didn't give the others a fair shake.
Impelliterri? Yuk!

| Sure, there are thousands of hot shot guitarists, but not that many of
'em really have much style. Takes more then fast playing.
Marty Friedman in Megadeth is a great example of how a player with a
cool style (and good chops) can really make a band sparkle. They were
ok before he joined up, but completely smoke with him. I think
Skolnick was the same for Testament. They'll probably do fine without
him, but I thought he added a lot to the band.

Greg, They dress up in costumes, and hit each other and stuff,
they keep saying how much they suck, and they have cardboard
backdrops...
Some of the (papermashe' (sp?)) outfits were kinda funny at
first, but it got really annoying fast.... They did do one
kinda funny song 'Anarchy in Bedrock' a take off on Anarchy in
the U.K. and the flintstones.. There was Pebbles, Betty, Wilma,
Fred, and Barney all hitting each other with clubs, which was
interesting for about 1 minute! ;^)

Oh they also had two bimbos bopping around the stage the whole time.
They gave a speach before the concert saying that there was a lawsuit
so they had to change their name from
Green Jello to Green Jelly, but they said they use a Y with two
dots over it, which is pronounced like an o so although even
though it is spelt jellY they still pronouncce it jellO
It was a long really lame speach! The only time the crowd was into
the speach at all was when he kept telling people that they suck and
to give them the finger, I have never seen a whole room of birds
before! ;)

Sounds pretty funny to me! The "suck" part sounds like Primus. Kind
of lame to rip off Primus' thing though...
I guess they were p*ssed 'cause the makers of Jello (General Foods?)

Well after coming to work jammin out to the 7/4 intro
riff on "Malpractice", I figured I'd look into the Testament
note after a lengthy absence.
I bought this "Guitars that Rule the World" tape a while
back. On it, Alex Scolnick, ex Testament shredder, does a
funked-out instrumental piece (has anyone heard it?). At any
rate, I got a kick out of the previous note which mentions
Testament and Primus in the same sentence. Why? Because
on Alex's little funk tune he employs none other than Lester
Claypool to hold down the bottom!

Testament is:
Chuck Billy - Vocals/growls
Eric Peterson - Rhythm/Lead Guitar, backing vocals
James Murphy - Lead Guitar
Greg Christian - Bass
Drum Tracks by John Tempesta
Now this drummer is pretty good! Is he a studio musician or someone who
sat in on this album. And has he done this for other bands? Just
curious on the latter.

I also picked up a new live Testament thing on CD. This one's
from a recent show (I forgot where...it's right in the damn title

All in all, it's a pretty decent recording...even Chuck Billy's
vocals are fairly easy to make-out (I've seen this band live 3x,
