Once again, the drummer for this band is the
nutz! I haven't heard Bad English yet, but Deen
Castronovo drummed on Tony MacAlpines latest
album as well as for the Wild Dogs. For some
sick drumming, pick up Man's Best Friend, or even
better, Reign of Terror. I'd have to put Wild
Dogs in the same catagory as Leatherwolf; maybe
a bit heavier though.

610.6 | | HAZEL::STARR | Kids flash guitars just like switchblades | Thu Jul 20 1989 14:15 | 15 |
| The connection:
John Waite and Jonathain Caine were both members of the Babys. When the Babys
broke up, John Waite went solo ("Missing You" was a #1 hit), and Jonathain
Caine joined Journey (on the 'Escape' album - he replaced Greg Rollie).
So Caine is the missing link - he played with both Waite and Schon, in two
different bands (Babys and Journey, respectively).
I haven't heard the album yet, so I'll save my opinion (I'm not even sure if
they belong in this file, but that's another issue...). But I know that Neil
Schon is a rocking guitarist! And that Waite is sorta mellow/melodic. So I
dunno which direction the band is taking...

Good memory! Neil joined Santana when he was 16 years old (!), after turning
down an offer from Eric Clapton to tour with Derek and the Dominoes. Journey
was formed by Neil and Greg Rollie, who was playing keyboards for Santana
(and also doing a lot of the vocals).

Twelve bucks a head on a Sunday night!
GOOD SHOW! Opening tune : "The best of what I got". Other standouts
were "Heaven is four letter word"., "Tough times don't last", and
of course the show ender "Forget me not" brought down the house
(sorry Greg). One encore - surprise - "Jumpin Jack Flash", I thought
it would have been an old Babys tune ("Head First", "Midnight
Rondevous") , or John Waites "Change". They did a good job of it,
certainly better than the Stones did when Keith was wasted.
Neal's guitar playing was great, John's vocals were there, and everyone
had a chance to solo since Bad English only has one album. Yes Neal
Schon played a Schon guitar!

| Oh yeah, as far as drum solos go, it was a good one. Not too
extended really, but well executed. I actually hadn't heard a
drum solo in a major act since I saw the Firm (Chris Slade on
drums) and that was a good one as well. With all the effects out
these days drum solos have gotten more technical. In this case,
with Castronovo there were no electronic drums, just good settings
on the verbs, flanges, and slap backs.
Neal Schon's solo was somewhat longer than the others and it
was set up to lead right into the nest song. I talked to a friend
of mine in Rochester, NY and he informed me Bad English is playing
a concert there (not a bar) with Great White and Tesla later this

| I can't wait to tell Deen that you all gave Bad English their own NOTE!
I haven't been keeping up on hm notes but was very, very excited to see this
one! (Deen's an old friend...)
I saw their show at the Cabaret in San Jose, CA last month. They really do ROCK
much harder live than on the album. Deen is a killer drummer (ask Rob!) and
some of his speed is wasted on the slower tunes but I still have to say they're
a great band.
Because of the earthquake they had to cancel their San Francisco show at the
Fillmore (apparently they're tearing it down). We thought they had cancelled
completely so my roommate & I bought Warrant tix. Then Deen called
Sunday to say that they are playing Wednesday after all and Thursday they're
opening for Warrant at the Arco Arena in Sacramento! So now I've got to get
rid of those Warrant tix...!

610.24 | VERY Biased Show Review | USWS4::BUREN | shake, rattle & roll! | Thu Nov 02 1989 15:40 | 29 |
| Saw Bad English at The Stone in The City (that's San Francisco to
Bay Arean's) Anyway, unlike last time - I managed to stay sober and
really take in the whole thing - And I must say it was quite a show!
Bad English really DOES rock live! I love a band that has a good
time and these boys were partying! They opened with Best Of What I
Got (my personal favorite and the next single to be released).
(When I See You Smile just went #1).
They played almost every song off the album except Possession and
one other one I can't think of right now. They through in a nice
blues tune I didn't recognize. Neal did a short solo at the end of
Lay Down Your Love but through-out the show his riff's really stood
out and Deen did a excellent solo too - its hysterically
funny to watch him and then to turn around and look at a crowd full
of wanna-be drummers with their mouths hanging open! It's just plain
weird to see him up there with these mega-musicians. I had to keep
looking and Neal and Jon, and then back to Deen to assure myself he
was actually on the same stage with them. The encore consisted of
"Head First" (really well done I thought, nice harmonies and it just
sounded real good) and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" which as far as I'm
concerned they could lose - it just doesn't seem to fit the bands
personality (although the crowd liked it).
This was my last opportunity to see them in a small club - it was
crowded, hot and standing room only. Tonight they open for Warrant
in Sacramento at a HUGE arena there. Saturday, Deen (and the band)
play in our hometown - Portland, Oregon. The media will have a hay-
Day "Local Boy Makes Good (Music)".

Well, let's not forget that Schon is a good guitarist in his own right! IN
fact, I may be endangering my life to say so here, but I probably like a lot
more of Schon's stuff than Vai's! The only *killer* stuff Vai has done (IMO)

It just took him hooking up with a "public" figure like DLR, instead of

re: Moto
I wouldn't say I was jumping on any bandwagons, since I was into his music
at least four-five years ago. I got the Flexable album before he joined
DLR, (when it was only available as an import). If you look back, most of
the people in here that are going on and on about Vai are the same ones
that have consistantly done so for a long time.
Maybe outside this conference there's a Vai bandwagon, but I think in here
it's about the same crowd.

Hi Rob!
Just off the phone with Deen. (well o.k. it was a couple
of days ago...)
Deen and Neal are working on a new project to be released in
March. The group is called Hardline. Apparently they got an
even more favorable contract from the record company with this
band than they did with Bad English. The other members are
virtual unknowns. The Gioelli (spelling could be wrong...
pronounced similar to "jelly") brothers ( you east coasters
might recognize them since I think they're from Philly) and
the bassist from Sequel and most recently David Lee Roth's tour;
I believe his name is Todd Jenson.
Hardline will tour during the spring/summer of '92. Deen says
it's better than Bad English...who knows?
Has anybody else heard anything about this group? I haven't heard
about it in the media at all.
Future projects could include a Journey reunion, but that's
at least 1 - 2 years down the road. Apparently Neal and Steve
Perry have reconciled and there was talk (at the Bill Graham
tribute) of making another album. Of course Steve Smith is
busy with The Storm and Deen is certain he would be the drummer.
