My two fave album cover artists are Roger Dean (Yes, Gentle Giant,
Greenslade and many more) and Rodney Matthews (Magnum, Diamond Head
and others). The cover to Magnum's "On a Storytellers Night" is
superb.
Other favourites of mine include Sabbath's "Mob Rules", Hawkwind's
"Choose Your Masques" and "Sonic Attack", Priest's "Turbo" and,
best of all, "Heaven or Hollywood" by Uncle Sam.

IMO, Hugh Syme does the best covers. He does all the covers for
Rush, and I have seen his name on Y&T's Contagious album and also on
Whitesnake's self-entitled album. I know he has done a lot of other
albums, but I can't quite think of them right now.

More great album covers:
To Megatherion - Celtic Frost. Artwork by H.R. Giger, the man who
designed most of the gooey bits in Alien, and purveyor of some of
the most disturbing artwork I've ever seen.
In to the Pandemonium - Celtic Frost. The cover to this is a detail
from Heironymus Bosch's "Garden of Delights".
No Remorse (Limited Edition) - Motorhead. Silver Motorhead on a
black leather cover.
And another vote for Cultosaurus Erectus.

My vote for best cover art goes to Iron Maiden. The cover to
"Powerslave" kept me enthralled for hours. The cover to "Peace

has a provocative cover. The list goes on and on. Great topic

ZZtop's Afterburner and Styx's Grand Illusion are non-metal covers

Bon Jovi - 'Slippery When Wet' (the original cover with the girl on it!)
Dio - Last in Line
Fastway - All Fired Up
Guns and Roses - Appetite for Destruction (original artwork)
Guns and Roses - Lies, Lies, Lies (its a riot!)
Heart - Little Queen (I just like to look at the sisters!)
Journey - all those covers that had a theme to them (Infinity, Evolution,

Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East
Kiss - Alive I
Kiss - Alive II (inside cover, and Gene's face on the back cover)
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
Moody Blues - almost all of them!
Motorhead - No Remorse (leather version!)
Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall (both classics)
Ratt - Invasion of Privacy (for ovbious reasons!)
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers (zipper cover)
Styx - Paradise Theatre

Some of me favourites - and I've bought an LP or two mainly on the
strength of the cover!
Rodney Matthews:
Magnum - Chase the Dragon, The Eleventh Hour, Storteller's Night
Diamond Head - Borrowed Time
Praying Mantis - Time Tells no lies
Dio - Holy Diver, Last in Line
All the Derek Riggs Iron Maiden covers - esp 7th Son
Marillion - Script for a Jesters tear, Fugazi
Pallas - The Sentinel
Y & T - Black Tiger, Mean Streak
Led Zep III & Houses of the Holy
Black Sabbath - Live Evil
Deep Purple - Book of Taliesyn, Deep Purple, In Rock
Bernie Marsden - Look at me Now
Whitesnake - Lovehunter, Come 'n' Get it
Def leppard - Hysteria
Uriah Heep - Demons & Wizards, Magicians Birthday
Gillan - IGB, Future Shock, Magic
Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Rising, Difficult to Cure
any Molly Hatchet
Cream - Disraeli Gears, Wheels of Fire
ZZ top - Eliminator, etc
Motorhead - No Remorse (the Leather one)
Phenomena I (Glenn Hughes/Mel Galley) (Luminous cover)
Uli Roth - Electric Sun
Asia - Asia
most Yes covers
Yngwie - Rising force, Trilogy etc...
Michael Schenker Group - MSG (II) - embossed all over
Phew! - I like mainly Fantasy Art - but there's some good Photos
around, e.g. UFO - Lights Out, Obsession, Floyd - Ummagumma
(recursive), Echoes (took me ages to work out it was an ear!)
There seem to be a fair few lewd covers, Sammy Hagar - Standing
Hampton, or Roger Waters - Hitch-hiking , particularly the Scorpions/UFO
ones (Yes I've got the banned Vigin Killers),
Sometimes when a record is re-released, not only do you get a single
cover instead of a double, but metallic foil is lost - e.g.
MAgnum II and Kiss - Double Platinum, but the embossing is lost
as well. So much for the 'in the original sleeve' marketing ploy.
It does seem that this genre of music is particularly prone to
good artwork - praphs coz the album is seen as an artistic entity,
not just a cash in on the charts. We ususally get inner sleeves
and the words more than the usual Chart Album.
Part of the pleasure for me is studying the cover, reading the sleeve
notes whilst playing my latest aquisition - What we gonna do when
its all CD?? The foldout sheets are a joke.
Does any one have a favourite designer - Hipgnosis, Shoot that Tiger
etc....?
There are several books on LP album cover art - including a one
specially devoted to HM.

When it turns to Cd land only (which I doubt it ever will), I'm
sure that they will be printing booklets that fit inside the case
that will be as good as or even better then album covers. Sure
you don't have the size to work with, but they can do things like
they did on the ZZtop six pack. They have an entire booklet telling
about the band's history and why they made the 6 album CD set.
It also has some great art work on the booklet. Other Cd's have
some decent booklets inside of them. ( Like O:MC, Savage Amusement,
Delicate Sound of Thunder, and Now and Zen to name a few that I
like.) I think that the CD's will be an exciting new medium for
the producers and artists to get visual messages across.

Hello,
If I remember well, the author of the album covers of Heep's
"Demons and Wizards" and "Magician's Birthday" is Roger Dean as you writed.
And something much more interesting about "Demons and Wizards":
it has taken to me much time before looking attentively to the LP's cover,
when I discovered that it is highly erotical. Just look to the shape of the
rock and the source of the falling water. I think not too much people has
observed this aspect (the CD version is too small to observe it well).
Many years have passed since this disc was out but I never found a comment
about the album cover. Have you observed it ?
Best regards,
Sorin

Re last couple;
It was indeed Roger Dean who did the art for Uriah Heep as well
as most of the Yes albums, Budgie and Osybisa(sp?) just to name a
few. He has done many album cover art for bands. He did the cover
for the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe album and also designed
their stage setup and lighting. Quite a talented guy.

Uh.... would that be the one with a witch standing by a pond with an
old house in the background? If so, that's a photograph right? Not a
painting. (not that photographs can't be artsy, but I was wondering if
there was some other cover to that album originally.)

Like a lot of things I'll have to come back to this one some time
but while it was on my mind I also Like Boston's first one but
am a bit bias about their second album since a close friend
did the design (air brush was done by someone else). The design
was completed in a rush as most things are only for the album then
to be delayed in what seemed liked years. It was!
RE: .22> Zep has a few good ones also. I like Zep IV's cover and Zep I cover
is a famous photograph (or painting I forget).
The photo you might be thinking of is related to Led Zeppelin II. The
original early 1920's or so photo was of German pilots, the cover was
touched up to include band, road crew and road manager. Also the
woman was some sort of spoof on Glyn Johns, producer/engineer,
I forget her name but something like Glyna Johns.
As for I it included a photo by Chris Dreja (Yardbirds).
The untitled 4th album cover has an even further long drawn out story.
Hipgnosis is widely known for later art work as well as with Floyd, etc.
The other famous picture, somewhat related to this topic, was for the
Swan Song logo which was drawn upon by the painting entitled "Fall of
Day" and is displayed in Boston's Museum of Science.

absolutely astounding.

2 minutes to midnight = Has the U.N. in the middle of a nuclear blast,
and eddie sitting with a m-16 right in front of it.
Flight of Icarus = Has icarus' wings being melted by a flying,
blowtorch carryin' eddie.
Can I play with madness = Has something or other happenin' to eddie's
head
The Clairvoyant = has eddie seeing in all directions...

This 1972 album cover (there were posters also) contains very suggestive

This doesn't take anything of the beauty of this album cover.

I think Rocky Mountain Way was on an earlier Walsh album, possibly
"The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get." The one with the
swimming pool scene is the one with "Life's Been Good" but I
can't remember the facking name of that album!
