| Yeah, great show, this is my third time seeing the *same* show,
but still loved it! I hoped they would of changed the staging around
a bit, and do something new, but no luck. We only got offered one
back-stage pass, and well, there were six of us, no one went back.
They played a little past eleven, the longest of the shows I've
seen. I lost my earplugs on the third song by the Cult, couldn't
stand the silly things, but needless to say, we were right below
those wonderfully loud speakers, and my ears are still ringing..
Yes, there were a couple of MOSH's down front, in the first three
rows (which consisted of about ten rows worth of people..) We were
in the seventh row, and I had to stand on the top backs of my seat
in order to see.. woke up in the middle of the night with charlie
horses in my legs! 8-)
The Cult are going to be touring by themselves soon. They looked
a little "out of it" (Candy said they looked bored..?) different
than what I expected, but they were good also.

| Last night Metallica/Cult show being my first real heavy Metal
concert was definately intresting. I enjoyed the Cult and could
see them too. Metallica did nothing for me. I didn't listen to them
before the concert and won't now either. Every song sounded the
same to me. After awhile I gave up trying to see the stage and watched
the people. That was and experience in itself!!!
I'd go see the Cult again.

This is one of the reasons I won't go to a Metallica concert.
(or any other band I've never listened to). I find it very
difficult to get into the concert if I don't know the songs
they're performing. Like you said, it seems everything just
sounds alike.
For example, I found it really hard to get into Information
Society at the MTV concert last week because I hardly knew
their songs. On the other hand, I LOVED Milli Vanilli.

whether a band like the Cult could get away with suppporting Metallica
in England.....Back when the band was the Death Cult, we used to get
annihilated in the moshes by punks/skinheads, simply for having long

What I meant is that it's really difficult to go to
a concert (IMO) and see a band that you've never listened to
before and enjoy it. I haven't heard ALL of Metallica's tapes
and am just starting to thoroughly enjoy AJFA since I play

I liked the Cult, even though the Singer wasn't as good as he's

I thought Metallica was better back in March when they played with

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you ever feel like you walk through life getting reamed just
about everywhere you go? Well, I saw Tesla/Great White/Kix last
night, so now I am going to tell you how it went.
Kix, of course, wasn't very good at all. It was the last show they
were doing (gee, and wasn't I lucky to see it!). Right around the
end of their gig, all the roadies came out on stage and walked around
for about 5 minutes mooning the audience. They were dancing around
and pretty much acting crazy.
Then.........the moment of truth. Tesla came out next. Yep, that
is right folks, and they only played about a 50 minute set. They
opened with Lady Luck, and then played these songs:
Hang Tough
Gettin' Better
No Way Out (Heaven's Trail)
Yesterdaze Gone
Flight to Nowhere
EZ Come EZ Go
Cumin At You Live
Modern Day Cowboy
Little Suzi
And that was it. Then the boys from Kix came back out and jammed
with Tesla to the tune "It's Only Rock n Roll" by the Stones. Tesla
sounded incredible during their whole show. Not one goof, just
played great, and had a good time doing it. This band was definitely
the attraction at this show.
So then out came Great White. We were pretty pissed at the fact
that Tesla didn't play for an hour, so it was hard to get into GW.
My favorite song of theirs is Mista Bone, and that song rocked.
These guys also sounded really tight, but they were not as much
of a crowd pleaser as Tesla. As a matter of fact, I saw some "birdies"
being shot when GW was playing.
Oh well, another day another ream for ol' John. And then to top
it all off, I was supposed to get back stage passes from a guy I
know who works security, but of course he had to work outside the
arena and I could not get out to see him.

| Just thought I would add this note to illustrate the ups and downs
of a rock fans life :
Last weekend an outdoor concert took place in the North of Ireland
on the shores of Lough Neagh billed as "Rock the Lough". The gig
comprised of local metal bands with "Mama's Boys" as support and
Rory Gallagher as headliner. I was supposed to drive up from Dublin
with my brother (travelling Willbury) and a friend of his. I had
to pull out due to other commitments at the eleventh hour. Disgruntled
they headed off anyway by bus on Sat morning. The nearest they could
get was Magherafelt which is about 5 miles from where the gig took
place. They got a taxi to the gig and according to their reports
it was one of the best gigs ever in Ireland. The rig used had
apparently been designed for Prince and the sound quality was
excellent. Already I am jealous. One of the local bands named
" Emerald " turned in a fine set and then introduced a guest. And
guess who came on. Yes youre right, who else but Vivian Cambell.
The local fire brigade had to called in to put out the fire on his
fret board. He was smoking. Ok I'm going green now. Mamas Boys
turned in their usual fine performance sporting a new lead singer
and Don (where am I) Airey on keyboards. Then came Rory who as we
all know by now never fails to give 100% and really got the place
jumping.
At this stage it is getting late and my brother is worried about
getting a lift home. He tries but to no avail. He has to walk 5
miles back to Magherafelt to find that there is no room at the inn.
Everywhere is booked out. Into a taxi and off to the next town
called Crookstown. At this stage spirits are flagging and the night
looks like it could be a long one. Luckily they find a hotel and
check in. This is where I go nuts. Who walks in but Rory and the
band. Rory is wrecked after the gig and has to go to bed but the
lads in the band stay up drinking with the brother till 5am.
Next morning when they are checking out ,down comes Rory. "Will
ya have a pint lads." In they go for a few jars with Rory. Aside:
I have been a Rory fan since 1977 and was shattered one day when
someone told me that he was not in fact "God". They got chatting
about his new album and up and coming gigs and the general
concensus is that he is a gentleman.
Anyway that just illustrates the downside. I missed the meeting
of a lifetime with my childhood hero.
Sorry for dragging on but just a quickie on the plus side:
Last night I drove down the country with the brother and his mate
to Tullamore to pick up Mamas Boys on their club tour of Ireland.
The gig was excellent with Don "where am I" Airey looking like
he didn't really know what was going on. Anyway to cut a long story
short at the end of the gig we were talking to the soundman and
we enquired where they were playing next. He replied " Tralee on
Saturday night". Guess what, my vacation starts on Sat and I am
going to Tralee.
Its a funny old up and down Rock and Roll world really.
Next week I will tell you how I have been a fan of Frank Marino
for 15 years and missed his concert in Portland by 10 hrs.

| Bad Brains - Astoria, London
I remeber some years ago a trudge up to Stevenage Bowes Lion Centre
in lousy weather to see a suport band...what's more, a dreadlocked
religious support band. It was to be one of those evenings of
blood-filled basins in the toilets and constant battles on the
dancefloor. It seemed that most of Hertfordshire's British Movement
had turned up to greet the visiting Americans.
the band met agression with Agression, 'Spit on the government,
spit on the Queen, but don't spit on us, cos who spits gets hit'.
Quite simply, the Bad Brains were awesome.
Things have since progressed in the right direction. Tonight there
are no non-sentient sieg-heiling skinheads, the touts are doing
good business, and the Bad Brains are headlining before a capacity
crowd.
Only one of the two advertised supports showed any signs of playing.
A reasonably irritating surf punk band with a heavy Ramones Influence.
They went down well with the younger spikey tops and warmed the
place up if nothing else. the BBs on the other hand brought this
ugly old building alive.
After breif praise to Jah, HR lead them into the strongest set this
side of sanity. The previous split in their ranks has if anything
provided them with fresh ideas and although there was perhaps too
much emphasis on selling their new album, Quickness, their older
material still provoked a frenzied response. The reggae if you
like that sort of thing is highly polished but retains Dr Know's
distinctive guitar sound, while the HArdcore/Metal/Thrash is the
fastest in town, any town.
It would be nice to finish with the line from the latest album,
'With the quickness, the children are here to stay,' but the night
was marred when after a very short encore the band refused to come
back on. It looked for a while as though there might be serious
trouble. the safety curtain was torn down and empty can were thrown
on the stage until a brave DJ appealed for calm and the situation
died down. Ironically the BBs message of peace and understanding
never even made it as far as the charming Cross Road.

We missed about 20 mins of Skid Row (traffic was a b*tch). They
were good, except for Sab Bach kept swearing (annoying). They did
I remember You, Youth Gone Wild, 18 and Life etc.. all the good
stuff from the album.
White Lion were good too. I gotta say that Vito Brata is AMAZING
live. I was mesmerised by the guy. They did all the popular songs
and my fav, which was "When The Children Cry". Vito did lots of
short unacompanied solo's.
Motley Cre were okay. They opened with Kickstart my Heart which
got the crowd going. They rang through all the classics like
"Smoking...", "Girlsx3","Wild Side","Home Sweet home","Shout at
the Devil" etc.. and finished with Dr Feelgood. they only played
for 1 hour 40 mins. Tommy Lee's drumming antic STOLE the show. I'm
not gonna go into details coz I'd spoit it for Flip, but lets just
say that they er.. turned my stomach upside down !! Mick Marrs has
got the stage presence (and chops) of a wet herring. Nice backing
singers though, especially when they put on their nurses uniforms
for Dr Feelgood 8^).
Overall, the show lasted from 7:00 to 11:40. Thats four hours and
forty mins of music for little . Great value.

| Skid Row - White Lion - Mtley Cre: Wembley Arena, November 2.
Skid Row: These guys were the b*lls! Yep Sebastian continually swore
throughout the set (incidentally Tommy Lee actually said f*ck seven times
in one sentence....), but as he said....."if you've come to see the Partridge
Family, then there's the f*cking door!" They played all of the tunes off the
album. These guys really know how to play as a *band* - FANTASTIC!!!!
White Lion: Geez, when I go to see a band, that's exactly what I would like
to see.....A BAND!! Not Vitto Bratta and the Lionettes! YEs this guy is
amazing on the guitar, but throughout the set, the lights were dimming and
he was going in to his classical bits whilst the others left the stage -
waste of bl**dy time! It got boring. Best tunes were Radar Love, Little
Fighter and When the children cry.
Mtley Cre: Man, these guys were loud! It was worth the two year wait to
see them (remember when they cancelled because they thought is would be
dangerous to set up the lighting rig with ALL that snow on the roof - it didn't
snow that year!). Mike Mars is a complete a$$hole - but ya have to admit
he plays that steel guitar damn good for a 95 year old! Tommy Lee's drum
antics stole the show.....and he droped his pants! Donna (nasty habit) should
learn not to stick her...ahem...chest out so far or she's gonna break her
back! Vince punched a security guard who tried to stop a fan getting on stage,
the kid was up there for a whole tune then slam dived into the front standing
section 8^)
Bestest moment was when they came back for the third encore - all three bands,
pluss Lemmy from Motorhead, came on to sing Jailhouse Rock. The "ONE MORE TIME"
bits went on for fifteen minutes!

SKID ROW - VAIN Hamersmith Odeon 13 November 1989
The concert hall was packed - a complete sell out!!!
VAIN are a complete waste of time - everything they do has been done
by others...several times and alot better! They did have a couple of
good moments: introduction to 'Who's watching you' and also the big
build up for a song about his ex girlfriend (relationship lasted all
of 30 mins). He had the lights dimmed and told us of how chocked up
he felt - then he screeched at the top of his voice, "F*CK YOU B*TCH!!"
There set last for about 40 minutes - too long in my opinion!
The crowd erupted when Skid Row hit the stage, they played for over
two hours - AMAZING! They get better every time I go and see them!
They played all the tracks off there current album, plus:
Holiday in the Sun Sex Pistols AWSOME!
Train kept a rollin ????
They had Lemmy from Motorhead come up to play on this one (plus
VAIN) and another guest whom I can't remember at the moment.
Wrathchild Iron Maiden
Nicko McBrain played the drums on this track - awesome cover, they
gave IM a run for there money on this tune!
Sebastian did all his raps in between tunes (colourful language
included). Ripped the sh*t out of the likes of Sidney Youngblood:
"Who the F*CK says betterrr-r-r-r-r?!?! It's better!"
Milli Vanilli -
"HEY Milli!!! Suck my F*CKING Vanilli!"
And, of course, we all had to do our one fingured salute to everyone
who sh*ts on HM fans!
I recommend everyone to go see these guys when they support Aerosmith!

Joe Satriani: "Wow we've got quite a crowd here tonight!"
"You're the best crowd we've ever had! This is the last show
of the tour, but we're definitely coming back here!"
a satisfied customer: "That concert was 10 times better than some of the
ones we've paid $20 for!"
Some of the quotes from last night's performance. Words won't do it
justice, this was something you had to experience. This was probably the
biggest crowd that has ever come out to see JUST Satch. It was SRO with
20,000 rockin' the Coliseum. He played for 2 hours and had to come out for
3 encores!
We sat in the upper deck, about 50 feet away on Satch's side (straight out
from his corner), so we could see really well. All around the top of the
stage were these huge diamond vision TV screens so we could still see his
finger work up close. The cameraman was right in front of the stage. Each
screen was probably about 6+ feet high.
Thanks to Crown (they rule!), the house was probably the cleanest and
purest I've ever heard at a major venue. The sound engineers did a great
job! I saw a whole wall of racked Crown Macro-Tech amps along the left
side of the stage! I counted 10 racks of 5 amps each, plus assorted EQ's,
etc.
He opened up with "Flying in a Blue Dream", and followed with:
Ice 9, Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing, Circles, Can't Slow Down, One Big
Rush, Crush of Love (introduced with "...time to do a little soul"), I
Believe, Midnight/Echo, Always with Me Always with You, Surfing with the
Alien, Satch Boogie, Ride (introduced with "...a song for cruising on your
motorcycle"), and Back to Shalla-Bal (introduced as "...another
sentimental love song").
"I Believe" was done in an acoustic setting with Joe on a Yamaha. The
crowd gave him a standing O after the acoustic setting for 5 solid minutes
followed by the "stampede of feet" (everyone stompin'). The band had to
wait for the deafening roar to die down to continue. The rest of the songs
had Joe rotating through his black Ibanez, chrome Ibanez, and the Ibanez
with the custom scribbles on it. The back of his rack was facing me, but I
could see 2 Marshall stacks to the left of Mover's Yamaha drum kit.
For encore #1 he did Big Bad Moon.
" " #2 " " Not of This Earth
" " #3 " " Rubina
Satch and Jonathan Mover didn't do any spotlight solos, but Stu Hamm did.
Stu did a two-handed tapping version of the Peanuts theme (Snoopy's song)
plus one other cartoon theme that had the crowd roaring.
He was fairly sociable with the audience, getting them involved in the
show. Satch also improvised on more than half the songs, this was where he
was really great! He got really funky on "Crush of Love". It really
showed off the different styles he's capable of.
When I saw the roadies cleaning up afterwards, I saw on the floor in front
of his monitors a tube screamer, a wah pedal, and a channel switcher.
Nothing real elaborate. I came pretty close to getting a few of his picks
too. The roadie wasn't very good at throwing them up into the balcony, but I
saw what was on them. They were sort of like the Fender mediums in
texture. On one side was the surfer logo, his name on the other. All were
pink or yellow.
I drooled while admiring his 3 Ibanez's up close. Nice Axes! I think I'll
go buy one ;-)
One thing I noticed that I couldn't quite figure out. He cups the guitar
with both hands around the bridge to get his patented screeches and growls.
What is he doing to get his?

575.49 | Yep it is definitely a Crazy World! | PLAYER::SUTHERLAND | Like a 2 ton..umm..heavy thing | Tue Jan 15 1991 09:42 | 61 |
| So, here I am fresh from the Scorps concert last night and I am
physed(tm). The Ahoy in Rotterdam is a sh*tty venue but this did not
spoil the concert.
The support band nearly did though. The openers were Winger who played
more like ducks with broken wings. I have seen more life in a dead
haddock than I did in these 4 wallies. By the way did you know that Kip
means 'chicken' in Dutch (^8*. Still, the Dutch not being the most
lively of audiences probably didn't even notice that the band had gone
to sleep. And they didn't play too long (actually 5 minutes was too
long). This gave me a chance to get several beers down while waiting
for the main attraction.
What an incredible intro. The lights went down and the LIGHTS went on
and the music started building and whack they were there. The way they
strutted on stage reminded you of there ethnic origins but it was
commanding. They opened with a number from there new album, it was
quite good but not as good an opener as 'Coming Home' is. But it was
obvious to hear that they had gone back to the style of playing of the
'Blackout' album. Mostly good rocking tunes with fast licks.
Surprises in store though when the basist played a 2 minute solo intro
to one of the numbers, which then literally exploded with a beat that
was almost thrash in its energy output. Great stuff. It is a shame
that I don't know the names of the tunes as I don't yet have the new
album. Crazy World was quite obvious and there was a ballad about
their experiences in Russia (something about Rings?). Both of these
songs were well received even by the laid back Dutch (who still hadn't
got out of their seats). Klaus Meine ran around the stage like a
dervish, climbing all over the drummers rig, knocking over the other
memebers of the band, etc. You could see they were having a ball!
They played most of the new stuff, plus a LOT of their old favs (Rythm
of Love, Dynamite, Big City Nights, Rocking Like a Hurricane, Blackout
and many more). Even the unemotional Dutch fans (who still hadn't
stood up) waved their lighters in the air when they played 'Still
Loving You'. This is about the nearest the Dutch fans get to
expressing enjoyment (^8*. The band came back for an encore and
finished up with Big City Nights which was about as good a place to
finish as any.
The Scorps played for nearly 2 hours, giving pretty good VFM. The new
stuff sounds pretty good, so the concert has hadd the desired effect
with me as I will definitely be buying the album. The light show is
excellent, the emphasis being on knocking your head off with ultra
bright (halogen? (^8*) lamps in stacks and the subtle effects of
coloured lighting, loved the red glow on the band at the end! Klaus
Meine's voice has improved with age (not so shrieky) and the band has
got much better technically. They also seem to have even more energy,
must be on high protein diets (^8*.
Go and see if you can (but arrive late after Winger).
GAZ (mods please feel free to move this as I am too lazy to look for
the Scorps or Concert notes)

| Re -1. They opened with a number from their new album. A good going
tune but I don't know the name unfortunately. Also, I don't know every
one of the Scorpions songs as I only have 6 of their albums.
Oh yes, I nearly forgot, they also played an old Who number 'Can't
Explain'. Showing my age here, as Klaus Meine didn't credit it. (^8*.

| GAZ, nice concert review. The last time I saw the Scops was at the
Monsters of Rock here in the states. Out of all the bands I thought
they were the best. IMO. I'll definitly check them out again if the
come around here somewhere (fat chance).

| I agree with you, KER, I thought the Scorps were the best band at our
US Monsters of Rock show (in Denver, the last show on the tour) last
year.
I also enjoyed Metallica, but the sound was pitiful for their part of
the show.

| Capsule review of yesterday's Operation Rock and Roll show:
Metal Church - Definitely a nice surprise! We got there late, and thought we'd
miss them, but they ended up not going on until almost 5:00 - perfect! They
were real good, although the sound wasn't that great (it got better as the
set went on). I know that Buck isn't enamored of the new singer, but I
thought he sounded real good!
Dangerous Toys - we blew them off to sit in the sun for a bit......
Motorhead - what can I say, I love these guys!!! Like MC, they had some sound
problems at the beginning of the set - everything was real muddy and meshed
together, and you couldn't hear Lemmy at all. Got better over time though,
and by the time they did classic stuff like "Killed By Death" and "Ace of
Spades", they were killer! Also, the new material sounded really strong,
supporting my contention that '1816' is the best Motorhead album since Fast
Eddie Clark left.
Alice Cooper - Great show!!!! It started out a little weak, the guitars
sounded a little too processed on rockers like "Under My Wheels" (opener).
But after the first 3 or 4 songs, they started hitting stride, and it just
got better from there. The set list had lots of classics ("Billion Dollar
Babies", "Only Women Bleed", "Elected", "School's Out", "Go To Hell"),
and the new stuff sounded good too (except maybe "Poison"). One of the
new songs (?), called "Love Is Like A Gun" was a standout. Very cool show,
lots of stabbings and electrocutions and all that sorta fun stuff that
Alice is known for. Fourth time I've seen him since he came back a few years
ago, and the best since the first time.
BTW, Al Pitrelli was not on guitars last night. The two guys he had were more
than adequate - the rhythm/lead player was real good, and the lead/rhythm
player was a MONSTER guitar player! He was doing all that sweep picking stuff
that you hear a lot from the Racer X/Cacophony-type players. I tried to catch
his name, but didn't understand what Alice said - anyone know who he was? Oh,
and the drummer for Alice was Eric Singer (previously residing in the Where
Are They Now File).
Judas Priest - Same as always, totally professional and just plain great!
These guys were one of the originators of Heavy Metal, and still one of the
best at it. For more info, see the review I wrote of the Worcester show back
in January - it was very similar (except Great Woods had a lot of pyro).
Overall, I was pleasantly suprised at the quality of the show. Every band was
impresive and enjoyable, no easy task. Except for Priest, they all started a
little slow and then caught fire (while Priest was "on" from the word 'go'!).
Lot of bang for the buck, and I think no one walked away disappointed.

Nope. Rough guess, I'd day 8K-9K people in attendance. The Providence show
the night before was cancelled because of lack of ticket sales. Definite
hard times in the music biz......

In the music biz...or in the Metal Biz?
Don't forget, the Lollapalooza Tour sold out all over the country.
Maybe it's time to start a new topic about the future of music and
metal (but I don't note in this conference enough to start it myself).
Habitually lazy.

| Yeah, Ice-T is kind of a wild card in that bunch, didn't seem to fit as
far as I could see. I don't like him or his stuff, so if I went I'd
probably leave during his half-hour or something. From the reviews in
RADIO_RADIO, the alternative crowd there didn't appreciate him either.
However I would definately go out of my way to see Nine Inch Nails,
Living Colour, the Butthole Surfers and Janes Addiction! With a lineup
like that, I'd be willing to sit through a band or two I don't like.
Oh yeah...Marshalls rool, nuff said!

UK music magazine that he has a metal outfit that plays thrash called
"body count"or something like that. They play delightful little ditties

| I've seen the Spin Doctors doing live stuff on a couple of Tv shows and
they seemed pretty weak in the vocal dept. The exception was the SNL
performance, as I recall.
On the other hand, Soul Asylum are really much better live then on
their most recent record, they rock. The one song I've seen the
Screaming Trees do live was also cookin, I'd love to see them!

Happened to go back through the replies in this note today ...
some old names and reviews of some of today's bands as they
were "up and coming".
Interesting.
The one thing that sticks out in my mind is one of the 1st
replies inthis topic, which says, basically, "Kix sucks".
