567.0. "Boston" by ANT::SLABOUNTY (The word for today is legs ...) Wed Jun 21 1989 17:48

Well, the biggest Boston-based band doesn't have their own
note ... but they will now!!

Boston has always blown me away, especially since Tom Scholz
(sp?) builds alot of the amps/effects that the band uses.
He uses about 10-15 different pedals during a concert, and
he's a good guitarist (not a speed demon, but that's OK).

    	Discography (I know this one!):

    	Boston
    	Don't Look Back
    	Third Stage

    	Favorite cuts:

    	The entire first album (unbelievable!)
    	Party
    	Don't Look Back
    	Cool the Engines

and a couple more from Third Stage.

I realize they're not H_M, but compared to some of the bands
that are discussed here they rate pretty well.

    I've always liked Boston.

Sone of my fave cuts would be:

    Boston:
      Rock And Roll Band
      Foreplay/LongTime (Love that Hammond)
      Peace Of Mind

Don't Look Back (Stage II?) ;^)
      A Man I'll Never Be

    Third Stage
      Cool The Engines
      (and another ballad-type that I can't remember)

Boston has the kind of music that I would list in The Most Memorable
Tunes topic, but probably didn't think of it. I think Boston is
pretty metal, it's just that Brad Delp can *really* sing...the metal
stuff and the swoon stuff too. He's quite well rounded. So what
if it's pop ? Now, Tom Sholz blows me away; as did Barry Goodreau
(sp?) who did quite a bit of the lead work on the first lp. I wonder
what ever happened to Orion The Hunter.

    Good topic Shawn.

    Orion the Washout, you mean.

I used to like Boston a lot in the mid-late 70s, but I've gotten pretty
much burned out on them lately. I typically switch the channel if a
Boston song comes on the radio now.

567.6Some Interesting Boston FactsSTAR::DONOVANTue Jul 25 1989 14:0738
Fun Boston facts to know and tell:

    1. Big Tom was at one of the gala parties for the new Hard Rock
Cafe in Boston. A picture appeared in Metronome Magazine
that showed the lanky guitarist flanked by two smiling babes.

    2. Fran Sheehan, bassist of the original lineup, is a member of the
WZLX Blues Band, and frequently appears at other jams in the
        the area.

    3. The drum sounds for the Third Stage Tour were sampled from the drum
sounds of the first album. The actual drums on stage were stuffed
with foam rubber and had triggers attached.

    4. Gary Pihl, ld. gtr. of Boston II, wins the Tom Scholz look-alike
contest. He is formerly of Sammy Hagar's band. Word has it that
he went to work soldering boards for Rockmans between the two
        tours. Some retainer, huh?

    5. Dave Sykes, bass of Boston II, is formerly of Aldo Nova.

    6. The original title of "Gonna Hitch a Ride," from the first album,
        was "San Francisco Day."

    7. The original title of "More Than a Feeling" was "99 Miles."

    8. There is a live Boston bootleg floating around, called "Boston:
Smokin' Live." It was recorded at Long Beach, CA before the
second album. It is largely pretty weak but "More Than a Feeling"
has a long, majestic rideout that is very Queen-like."

    9. There is also a bootleg of the original Boston demo tape. It's
called "I Found It in a Trash Can, Honest!" and it's hard to
find. It is very easy to distinguish between Tom's and Barry's
playing on this demo. It is also an astounding accomplishment
when you hear the kinds of sounds they had developed as early
as late 1973 - early 1974, in comparison to the contemporary
        guitar sounds of the time.

Everyone? Who else besides Sholtz and Goudreau? I know the reason he still
works/is_friends_with Goudreau is that they are brother-in-law to each other
(Barry married Brad's sister - or was it the other way around?).

Yeah, actually I hear some of the same things - Brad's working with this
band or that guy or whatever. But I gotta say that he's never actually
released anything except the Boston albums and the solo Goudreau album in '81.

I heard that Brad Delp had to work with everyone else because of the
contract Sholtz had on him. He apparently had to do everything for
free too, couldn't receive any payment because of Sholtz's contract.

The contract just ran out, so now he's free to be in a band of his own

I have the RTZ release which I like alot...

I think Brad Delp is one of the best singer ever, and his voice mixed
with Tom and Barry sounds great...

So my question is what other releases has Bred Delp sung on......

from previous notes, I get that the only other one is Barry Goudreau's
solo album...(I looked for it in about 7 record stores in the metrowest
area (Mass.) this weekend and I can't find it anywhere... does anyone
know where I could get it?)

Orion the Hunter...(from previous notes I got that) Barry is the guitar
player, but Brad Delp does not sing correct? Is Orion the Hunter any
    good?

Some FYI's I picked up in conversations over the past week about
Boston/RTZ. Some of the information stated as fact may actually be just be
the opinion of the person(s) doing the talking at the time but I have no way
to verify anything so I'm just reporting what I heard. Some of this might
be old news but ...

It seems that Tom Scholz and Barry Goudreau have a long running feud
during which Tom Scholz has used every ounce of his influence in the industry
to squash any musical interests which Barry has undertaken. Apparently, Tom
has mega-influence, more than I ever imagined. He won his mega-million dollar
suit against CBS and now is connected with Giant/Warner. I got lost in all
the label ramblings (there was mention of David Geffen - possibly through an
impending buyout - becoming the head of the first billion dollar label; Tom
was somehow remotely involved). Tom owns oil wells, etc. and is supposedly
very financially astute. He holds Boston IV (a supposedly guaranteed
blockbuster even if they only do animal noises on the album) as leverage and
contends that Goudreau's projects detract from the financial marketability of
the next Boston album. To that end he has supposedly seen to it that Orion
The Hunter and now RTZ get minimal support within the industry.

Fran Cosmo, who sang in Orion The Hunter, is supposedly the new
lead singer in Boston with Goudreau and Brad Delp out of the band.

RTZ, while doing "OK" (not terrible but not that great) in New England
are doing awful everywhere else in the country except Baltimore, where they are
hot. They played in Disneyland a while back and Paul Rodriguez, the comic,
opened for them. There were lots of people there for Rodriguez. When RTZ
played, people started drifting away. Towards the middle of the set there were
less than 30 people standing, watching RTZ. After the last song, there was only
one couple, standing up front, remaining. Brad threw a pick to the couple and
thanked them for staying. The guy threw the pick back to Brad and walked away.
It was alluded to that part of the problem has been negligble promotion by the
label and management.

Whether sour grapes or not, I got the distinct impression that the
feeling is that the lack of support the label is giving RTZ is directly linked
back to Tom Scholz.

Either way, I'm looking forward to hearing Fran Cosmo on Boston IV.
I liked him alot in Orion The Hunter. Plus, Brad is looking old with all that
gray in his beard (I was told he's in his mid 40's) and the rigors of the road
seem to be detracting from his performance more than in the past.

None-the-less, Brad Delp is a tremendous person as are the people
associated with him. I hope RTZ perseveres.

    Woah, shades of "Spinal Tap"...

I don't see how promotion would have helped with the above situation.
It seems to me that if their music was interesting, at least the 30
people that were left after the Rodriguez show would have stayed all
    the way through.

Personally, what I heard of RTZ (a couple of songs on the radio) was
pretty generic sounding and boring. I feel bad for them, perhaps it
was the choice of songs they played on the radio here or something, but
    I couldn't get into it.

567.25Probably old news, but...CSC32::H_SORedline? What redline?Wed Jul 15 1992 20:3032
The members of Boston have always had trouble getting along. It seems that
(my impression, anyways) Tom has always been the central source of their
sound and materials, but the members got into quarreling about who did what
and who's respoonsible for their success, etc. And when the rest of the band
refused to sign a contract with Tom, he fired them all. 5 or 6 years of
court cases followed with the members as well as the record company greedy for
the next release. I believe Tom prevailed in most, if not all, of the court
cases.

From listening to Boston III, IMHO, I believe that it is true that it was Tom's
influence that has made the band what it was. I remember hearing a rumor about
Tom's alledged attempts at getting the band signed in the first place; he would
send a demo tape to record companies with about 5 seconds of their music. If
no response, he'd send another tape with different 5 seconds of music. Also,
I believe that Tom doesn't have to make ends' meat playing music, and never
really had to, Phd in Mechanical Engineering, graduated from MIT and all. I
also heard a rumor that he was responsible for inventing the Polaroid instant
camera, but that's probably too far fetched.

In the beginning, I believe it was Tom's engineering ingenuity that got the
distinct "Boston guitar sound" which he altimately ended up marketting in the
form of Powersoaks, preamps, amps and most notely, the Rockman.

I believe I still have the Musician mag with a lot of this information, it really
surprised me, and if there's enough interest, I'd be willing to fish it out and
post it here.

BTW, any news on Boston IV, yet?

Naw, the man who developed the instant camera was Edward Land.

Of all the Boston offshoots so far, I think the best one so far was the
first Barry Goudreau solo album. I agree that the RTZ album sounds way too
generic - the only redeeming part of it at all is Brad's voice, and even
that isn't enough to save it. Too bad, too - I was looking forward to it.

I remember Vermont being outside of 495. Besides, if I heard it in Vermont
everyone else MUST have heard of it.

By 1979 they had their second album out and were already on their way
downhill... (Oops - editorial comment slipped in)

Problem was -- Tom's former manager sued BOTH Brad and Tom for some

It felt more like a private party than a concert. Very loose with a

getting hugged. Crowd was into it. Great viewing spot (love having
short people in front of me for a change) and as already mentioned the

567.76Boston in BostonPOWDML::BUCKLEYI [heart] Roller Coasters!Wed Dec 14 1994 11:1429
The Boston show last night at the House of Blues in Cambridge was cool!

The live band consisted of the following:

    Tom Scholtz Guitar, Organ, Vocals
Brad Delp Guitar, Organ, "Vocals" (very limited due to
    						 laryngitis -- sp?!)
    Fran Cosmos Vocals, Guitar
    David Sykes Bass, Vocals
    Doug Huffman	Drums Vocals
    Gary Pihl Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals

The mix was pretty amazing!! You could hear every vocal harmony, and
even when all four guitars were playing, all were clearly audible.
That's probably due to the fact that EVERYTHING (guitars, bass, keys,
drums, etc.) were run through ROCKMAN systems.

The band basically played all the hits -- More Than a Feeling, Peace of
Mind, Foreplay/Longtime, Don't Look Back, etc. etc. as well as a couple
of cool Christmas tunes, arranged by Tom.

The band wasn't taking the show too seriously -- due to Brad's
unexpected loss of vocals, they suddenly had noone to sing some songs.
Band members admitted "I'm going to try this one -- where's the lyric
    sheet?!?"

All in all a very fun gig.

    Mike,

Apparently, the tour is coming before the next album (MCA dropped the
ball after the release of WALK ON, essentially letting the album slip
quietly into total oblivion). Tom wants to get back on track with a
tour to turn people onto the album. He notes he has a "ton of stuff
already in the can", so I'm sure he could release another album if he
so choosed, but knowing him and his ultra-perfectionism, I wouldn't
    hold my breath...

Example -- When Boston played at the House of Blues, do you think they
just showed up and played? Oh Nooooooooooo -- they rented the place
for two weeks prior, tore out the club's ENTIRE sound system, then
replaced it with one of Tom's custom systems, which he insisted he
personally wire from top to bottom. After days worth of scoping,
