564.5 | First Installment -- Top Five | EMASS::APOSTO | For All Those Who Dare | Thu Jun 22 1989 15:02 | 53 |
|
O.K. Here's the Top Five, with a brief excerpt from the magazine's
review...
1. ZOSO ... Led Zepplin "It's safe to say that without the
looming spectre of L.Z., heavy metal as we know
it today would never exist...Nowhere did Zep's
finely-tuned metal machine run in finer fashion
than on their fourth album (a.k.a. ZOSO)...
Quite simply, it doesn't get any better than
this...[Stairway to Heaven] for many, it was
heavy metal's coming of age..."
2. Pyromania ... Def Leppard "...ranks among the most successful
heavy metal albums of all time...it is also
one of the best...Walking the fine line between
pop commercialism and pure metal mania...Prior
to '83, metal had been in a tailspin...but the
album's success once again proved the viability
of metal..."
3. Back In Black ... AC/DC "...many wondered if the band would
dissolve [after Bon's death]...but instead
they recorded a classic slab of metal...
Angus says "Bon's death was still very much
in our minds, and we just dedicated everything
we did to him...We just lowered our heads and
plowed on, hoping for the best..."
4. Theatre of Pain ... Motley Crue
"...T.O.P. cemented their position
as the most outrageous band of the '80's...
Songs like - Use It or Lose It - exemplified
their stick-it-in-socity's face attitude while
flaunting their devil-may-care attitude...
[Also] T.O.P. did exhibit the band's topical
side on songs like - Fight For Your Rights..."
5. Van Halen I ... Van Halen "...Within that album's groove was a
brief instrumental called ERUPTION which soon
changed the style, sound, and texture of rock
guitar as the world knew it...Edward was on his
way to becoming the most respected and
influential musician of his generation...[along
with] Roth's hair-raising shrieks, they brought
new meaning to the words "Big Rock".

|
Here's 6-10 ... Let me know if you want any more ??
6. Screaming For Vengeance ... Judas Priest
"...But despite their noble efforts
to keep the metal tradition alive, it wasn't
until 1982's S.F.V. that [they] attained
the Platinum sales status...On the strength
of such tracks as - Electric Eye & You've
Got Another Thing Coming - Preist showed
that metal was not only alive, but very well
indeed..."
7. Destoyer ... Kiss "...[due to their makeup] it was
difficult for most serious rock fans to take
Kiss seriously. But when Destroyer was released
in '76, no one could deny that this band was on
the cutting edge of metal's commercial
renaissance..."
8. ...And Justice For All ... Metallica
"...must be ranked among the most im-
portant, influential and satisfying metal
albums of all time...the unquestioned kings
of metal's newest subgenre, Power Metal. Songs
like - Blackened & Harvester of Sorrow - rock
with the power of a runaway rhino while pre-
senting concepts that are both thoughtful and
thought-provoking..."
9. Machine Head ... Deep Purple
"Smoke on the Water, Highway, &
Lazy - some of the most memorable metal songs
of all time, and they're all contained on one
album. Released in 1972, M.H. has weathered
the test of time to become one of the truly
classic LP's of the metal genre...Even today,
the LP stands as a cornerstone in the
development of metal's sound and style..."
10. Blizzard of OZZ ... Ozzy Osbourne
"...was a surprise when it was released
in 1981. Not only did it contain outstanding
tracks like - Crazy Train & Flying High Again -
it also showed that Osbourne had a fine ear
for young talent - guitarist Randy Rhoads
emerged from that album as one of the brightest
young stars in metal before a plane crash robbed
the rock world of his skills 2 years later..."

564.12 | Subjective comments on a subjective issue | JANUS::FAGG | Louder, LOUder, LOUDER | Fri Jun 23 1989 11:22 | 23 |
| Much of this stuff is subjective, but a few observations...
#1 LZ's ZOSO (The fouth album). Although it's a VERY VERY good album
I'd hardly put it in the league of a metal album that kept metal
alive. For example, what of the albums that Deep Purple and
Black Sabbath were producing at the time (eg, Masters of reality,
Vol4, and Made in Japan)?
#2 Pyromania (or whatever it was). Stated as being one of the most
succesful albums ever. So what? That doesn't make it a good
metal album! I see some pandering to the market/industry here!
#n Deep Purple's Machine Head. Again, a really good album, but I
much prefer the live album "Made in Japan". For me that has
to be the definitive Deep Purple album and deserves to be much
further up the list.
Just my opinion. I'd still like to see some more. If you don't
want to enter it all in the conference, send me mail to JANUS::FAGG
or hardcopy to REO2-G/H3.
Ta much,
Keef.

I'd like to make some subjective comments about this list:
I think the Magazine was definitely trying to get every current
heavy metal act with at least one entry. This way whenever they
need an interview with one of these bands, the band may be a
little more amenable. Like Keef said "pandering".
However, I don't think the list should be read literally as
in number 1 is the greatest and number 100 the hundreth best
album. I think it is better to just say here is a 100 great
metal albums, and decide for yourself how they should be ranked.
Having said that, I can't believe anyone in their right minds
can say that Pyromania is the number 2 of all time. Better than
Paranoid ? Machine Head ? Led Zepplin II ? I mean let's be
serious....
One other point that really gets me is Jimi Hendrix's Are You
Experienced is number THIRTY-FIVE, behind such classics as
Metal Health (ugh!), and Slippery When Wet (gag!)...
That's why I'm just taking it as a COLLECTION of 100 metal albums
rather than a RANKING of the top 100. It is easier to accept it
that way....
I'll List the next 50 later....I'll include some of the excerpts
if anyone requests some specific album.

Perhaps they ment "Shout at the Devil" by Motley Crue?
I can't believe that Cinderella would make even ONE album on a "top
100 of all time", much less TWO (28 and 36). Excuse me if you're a big
fan, but I wouldn't rank them anywhere on the list. Likewise with
Europe.
