552.1 | CLOCK STRIKES TEN *IS* HM | SHRFAC::BOUDREAU | THERE IS AN A** FOR EVERY SEAT | Mon Jun 05 1989 17:02 | 7 |
| Sure, I like CT, they may not be HM but they are pretty
close. I saw them in '82 at Fitchburg with AXE. Great show. BTW
what was the last album that they had?
That's all for now

I saw Cheap Trick last summer at the Colorado State fair. I
paid $15 for the ticket, and they played for 45 minutes.
They s*cked. They wouldn't even come out for an
encore....seems they had scheduled an 11pm flight out of
Denver after a 6pm start for the show....so they decided they
couldn't play anymore. :-P
They only played one song off the old stuff (I hate when I
forget names of songs/albums/groups), everything else
was off their newest album.
I've never been to such a flop of a concert in all my life.
And I read reviews that said they will not be invited back to
Colorado for a long time.
When I saw them 6-7 years ago in Arizona, tho, they were
great! What happened?

| I've seen Cheap Trick about 8 times from 1979 - 1988. They were
pretty smokin between `79 - `82, but have been sketchy on vinal
and on styage ever since. Their LOL lp wasn't bad...and I saw some
good and bad performances from that tour.
Personally, they can be a great band...kinda like a heavy Beatles
of the 80s if you ask me.

| The Title of their lastest album is "Lap of Luxury"! Has some good
rock'in tunes on it! My favorite off this album is called, Wrong
Side Of Love! I've never seen them in concert, but I would like
too. I was glad they finally got to no# 1 with The Flame! They've
been around a long time!

| Hi,
Their first LP (1977) was something combining heavy rock and punk rock
rawness. It was very demolishing for its time. They changed very much
after their first LP by softening their music.

K-Mart... definitely... definitely. 8^)
But seriously folks... like the ones with the Cheap Trick logo from
the "Dream Police" album and the ones with the funny skulls on 'em from
their last crop of videos.

552.23 | Cheap Trick = ok | QRYCHE::STARR | Spontaneity has its time and place. | Fri Aug 09 1991 16:05 | 35 |
| I was at the Cheap Trick show last night. It was an ok show, nothing too
awesome. Its all depended upon the song - if it was a good song, they sounded
readed great. Other times they were sorta lame, and even a bit boring.
Best stuff - "Just Got Back" (opener), "California Man" (they skipped a verse
though), "Clock Strikes Ten" (also skipped a verse here!), "The Flame"
(Robin's voice sounded *great* here - he's absolutely one of my favorite
singers!), "If You Want My Love You Got It" (probably my favorite song of
the night, and a nice surprise!). Also, a newer song called "Back In Blue"
was ok.
Some of the stuff was just sorta lame though - "Surrender", "I Want You To
Want Me", "Ain't That A Shame", "Don't Be Cruel", etc.
And they didn't do a lot of songs I wanted to hear, like "Can't Stop The
Music", "On Top Of The World", "Auf Wieder..."(sp?), "Voices", lots more I
wanted to hear but didn't get to.
Best part of the show - Robin Zander's voice, followed by Tom Peterson's
12-string bass sound. Worst - Rick Neilson's guitar playing, which was only
fair and most of the time just sounded like a mess in the mix. Bun E. Carlos
was good, but I could have done without the drum solo.
The Neighborhoods opened up for them, they were as good, if not better, than
Cheap Trick was! They really have changed their sound - they used to be a
real bar_band_PRKG band, now they're leaning more towards the Aerosmith/
GnR kind of sound, with a lot of the pop sensibility gone away. Its was
good, although I sorta miss the old 'Hoods sound.
BTW, the show was WAY TOO LOUD!!!!!! My right ear is still ringing at this
moment, and I'm hoping there's no permanent damage. There's no reason for
them to be playing that loud!!! First time my ears have been ringing since
Deep Purple at the Centrum..... and I've seen a lot of shows since!

Sounds like last night was in between, leaning towards the latter!

552.25 | I *used* to listen to them a lot | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Green tinted 60s mind | Fri Aug 09 1991 16:11 | 16 |
| "Clock Stricks 10" is a cool tune! Glad to hear they played that one.
re: Rick Neilsons guitar playing
I can't figure out why people used to always rave about his playing, I
always thought he was mostly just average. It was nice to see someone
in the pop scene that cared more about playing to the song then showing
off his technique though.
re: too loud
I never go to a show (not even a bar band) without earplugs anymore. I
have plenty of hearing damage already, I don't need anymore. I like to
feel the music, but I don't like my ears hurting and ringing...

Exactly! They weren't as good as they were in '78-'81, but they weren't as
lame as the mid-80's period. It wasn't that bad really, still definitely
enjoyable, just not what they certainly *can* be.....

Anyways...
They release a new album in the next week or two called "Wake Up With
The Monster" (I think ?).
Anyone care ?
No....I didn't think so.
