| Cool topic.
First of all, there are all kinds of things to write songs about. A lot
of songs are writen about love, hate, war, death and so on. How many
songs can be written about the same topic, but have the best effect on
the target audience where they are being played? There's quite a few
combinations of words that can be put together, but how many are truly
crowd pleasers? I think that some bands have done themselves a bit of
justice by diggin' up an old tune and remaking it. eg. VH's "You really
got me." The Kinks did that tune too. Not in Heavy Metal, but they did
it more as Rock.... The people the Kinks play for are Rock-Heads the
people Van Halen (old VH) played for were Metal-Heads. Some it comes
down to what pleases the crowd.

With the exception of "Groovy Kind of Love" by Phil Collins
(*ack*) most covers are done of songs that are regarded as
"classics", that have timeless (well the last 30 years, or so)
appeal.
Mony Mony - Billy Idol
Johnny B. Goode - tons of bands cover this
Summertime Blues - ditto
gawd, there are tons of 'em, and they're all songs that you'd
crank up if they hit the radio, original artist or not.
/Motorbreath... they're covered cuz they were great then and
there's a fresh new audience out there that hasn't heard them,
they're re-released, and they're still great!

done these songs back when they were "paying their dues" doing the
club circuits too. Imagine ...
Exodus doing "Cry Me A River" or,
Slayer doing "When The Saint Go Marching In", or maybe,
Poison doing "You're Mama Don't Dance"
Guess that would be pretty silly wouldn't it ?

an old fave. The marketing of the song is already complete; every
body will recognize it ! Maybe even like the way you do it !
I really enjoy doing stuff like that. I've been wanted to cover
a tune called "Tell Her I'm Ill" by The Freshies (a relatively unknown
British punk/new_wave band). It has all the makings for a classic,
except that no one has ever heard of it !
How about doing tunes that no ones ever heard of ?

| The reason behind covering a song of the fifties (IMO) is because
Heavy_Metal gets it's roots deep down into the basis of Rock and
Roll. I see almost a trend. When Metal was first being recognized
with Zep. and Sabbath, it was a very Blues type sound. From there
it progressed just as Rock progressed from the blues. I see the
covering of these songs as an attempt to honor their roots. The
best form of flattery is imitation.

One thing I don't like is that it seems a lot of heavy metal bands
are covering songs, but adding no value.
I mean, I always thought that a cover you're going to bother to
*record* should add something to the original - a new style, a new
interpretation, something.
I think a lot of HM bands think that taking a song and just making
it louder constitutes adding something - "Your Mama Don't Dance",
"Smokin' in the Boys Room," "Money, Money, Money" (real title?),
etc. Then you have bands that totally do the song the same exact
way as the original - "Once Bitten, Twice Shy."
Whether you liked it or not, VH's "Dancing In the Streets" *was*
different, it wasn't just louder. So was Deep Purple's "Kentucky
Woman." And Quiet Riot's "Cum on Feel the Noize" - heck, QR didn't
even know the right lyrics (course they should have stopped after
1 Slade tune)!
I'm probably in the minority here, but I can usually do without
a cover on my album purchase if it's just "cranked-up" reiteration.

I like. For example, Freebird by Lynard Skynard is one of my all
time favorites. The p*p remake of it bites the big one.
It depends on the song, sometimes beefed up songs are great and
others aren't as good as the original (Judas Priest's "Johnny be
good" is great but it is no way near Chuck's.)
I think that remakes are great if done right and sh!tty if they
aren't.

There's a good side and a bad side to `remakes'. I, SOMETIMES,
can get into a remake, if it's one that hasn't been played to death
(i.e. - older/original version) on the radio. Take `Dancing In the
Streets'. . .When I first heard this song, it was by Van Halen and
was imbedded in my mind as a kick a$$ tune. . .then came Mick
Jagger and David Bowie doing a re-re-remake (or however many remakes
prior to that one) which was almost INSTANTLY played on the radio.
Sorry. . .I liked Van Halen's version MUCH better thank you !
Preference. . .it all depends on HOW well the song is done, WHO it's
done by and does it. . .impress me.

| I imagine that some bands do covers because they like the songs, and I
don't have a problem with bands that play covers live, but why bother
recording it?
Example, I saw Living Colour play awhile back and they did a cover of a
really cool song by the Bad Brains at the end of their set. I believe
they did it because they liked the song, not because they lacked
material or wanted a big crowd reaction (hey, not that many Bad Brains
fans around, in a comparitive sense). I liked that.
I don't like bands that put a cover on an album just to get some
airplay. Especially if they don't add any value to the song. (and I
do like some recorded covers...Devo did some excellent covers, like
Satisfaction).
I suppose that I don't really care for bands that do virtually anything
just to make get rich. That's the real bottom line.

Well, I think doing remakes has to do with band preference
and also age of audience. I mean everybody likes to get as
many people possible at any given gig, and what better way
is there to attract people......Play the Almost-Golden-Rockin'-
Oldies of yesteryear. If you can get age groups from 12-24 with
a good mix of 25-45 yr. old at any gig (provided no age limits)
I'd say that's an accomplishment in it self. I also think bringing
back memories has something to do with it, ya' know ya' hear
a song redone now'n'days and you instantly have flashbacks of
the good ol' days and you think "Man, I wish I was there now"
But I do feel strongly about redoing them with taste, some of
the remakes now'n'days would make Elvis turn over in his grave
if he was in there. ;') agaga
All-in-all I like doing remakes of the 60's, 70's if there done
with respect to the original band and taste.

Also, the band would be responsible for keeping up with changes on

The problem with 'specializing' in a particular band is
that u limit your audience to fans of that band. And we
all know that a 'limited audience' isn't the best way to
make money.
The best way to do it is to cover as many different styles
of music as possible (and Chain Reaction is a VERY good
example of this).
It also says something about the band - people will be im-
pressed to hear that a band is able to 'cover' 8^) as many
facets of the musical gamut as possible. (What do those
words mean?)

play in a new-wave/alternative type band. What we play is actually a
very odd eclectic mix of songs. Before anyone starts on me, I don't
feel I need to apologize for not playing in a metal band and I don't

Well, not really (again, IMHO)... I don't make a dime - everything I make

quite often, and that makes me happy.

>SELL-OUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yuck, nuck, nuck, nuck... Real bands Friz ? Dood - you're showin' your ass.
How long do you think the money paying public in Colorado Springs would
continue to frequent establishments who provide 2 hours of music and four
hours of set up time ? Thats about what it takes, as most 'originals_bands'
only have about 45 minutes of music. Think about this also - how many bands
are on MTV, that have never played the circuit ?
Don't get me wrong 'O-Frizzy-headed-one, I respect what you and other original
acts do. I just think that perhaps you could appreciate what we do also.
Just because we 4-5 sets a night, 3-4 nights a week, and strategically place
our originals in our set doesn't make us 'lame', 'sell outs', or 'not real
musicians'. Just the opposite in fact. It's marketing man - if you write
good tunes and no one gets to hear them, then whats the use ??

about 90% covers, 10% originals. We stayed booked as long as we wanted
to work. There were a number of "all original" bands around, and it
seemed like everytime we played somewhere, most of their members were
out hearing us ? Why ? Two reasons. We were awesome ! OK, there was
only one reason. They weren't working anywhere !!! Yeah, they had a
killer demo, and were mega talented musicians, but on a *club* circuit,
they weren't sellable. Sorry, but that's how it is. Playing live was my
thrill too. Was I selling out ? No. If you think it's a sell out to
play covers then quit your job at DEC and start your own business, same
principle.

I have VERY harsh feelings toward cover bands. It's not you or your
band personally. This town is geared towards 30 year old barflys and
the buddy-buddy bar bands...To me that limits creativity and NO wonder
no band has ever made it anywhere. I think cover bands have their
place...I mean everybody need background music while they drink a beer
and try to pick up on fat women. 8)
I'm sorry I came off rather harsh in the last notes. But when you know
you have something good and it gets stiffled alot of times by bands
that are only in it for the money...Wouldn't you get a little pissed
off? Can you relate?
It's a small town and the scene is lame but I think alot of people
and CERTAIN bar owners only make it worse. No offense to your
band but kids don't always want to see a cover band of middle-aged guys
doing Clapton covers. Maybe I'm blowing it out of preportion but
that what I heard from all the kids and people my age. (Same thing) 8)

Personaly, I wouldn't pay to see a cover band. I think the only place
in town where you could see a cover act is the Boozy Blues BAr
(not to be confused with the infamous 3B's) with Pete Lincoln. Other
than that I've only ever caught original acts on the the club scene.
No offence, but when I want to hear a mixture of songs, I'd go to a
party, dance club or dust off my CD collection and listen to the
original artist.

Sounds like the club scene over there is much more interesting then
around here. The majority of the scene here is geared toward "classic
rock" (meaning hits from 20 years ago that have been overplayed to
death) cover bands.
It's even tough for a cover band that plays more current material (like
Coop's) to get jobs. Bands that play original material? There's
almost no opportunity for them.

| IMO:
There is a definate need for cover bands, there are different
perspectives to live music, if you pay to go to a concert in a club,eg
Bierkeller in Bristol, and see someone like Nirvana then you would
expect them to play their own material. But when in a pub(eg Boozy
Blues Bar) getting ratar$ed you dont want to have to concentrate on the
music, you just want to sing along to well known tunes, in this area
there are hardly any good live bands, cover or original.
If anyone goes to Bristol, there is an amazing pub called the Prom Wine
Bar, live bands every night, Rock/Blues/Jazz etc.

Thats about it for EVERY town dood... if you want to "make it", you have
to identify a proven market and use that as a vehicle to promote what you
REALLY want (originals). Do something to attract a crowd (and a lot of
attention) then slip 'em a mickey (original) when they aren't lookin'.
:)
> To me that limits creativity and NO wonder

Why does it have to limit your creativity ?? Sure makes one feel good when
the '30 year old barfly' motivates off the barstool to ask the 'fat women' to
dance to your originals...

> you have something good and it gets stiffled alot of times by bands

> off? Can you relate?
Yes, I can relate. I've done the all-original scene before - its extremely
difficult to get a start...Especially in this town. Thats why I don't
do it here. There is NO market at ALL for original acts in this town. And
don't talk to me about getting stiffled...
Go to Denver maybe. Of course, then there is no money in it, so you'll go
broke renting PA, driving and set up (not to mention wear and tear on gear).
Better than that, go to LA or Seattle. Your young enough.
> It's a small town and the scene is lame but I think alot of people

Bar owners aren't gonna do you any favors, pal. They'll hire a band who pulls
a crowd, reagrdless of their music. Money talks, bullsh*t walks.
> No offense to your
> band but kids don't always want to see a cover band of middle-aged guys

No offense taken. But like I've said before, but 'kids' (12-21) don't go to
bars. They don't spend money, don't have jobs, and don't mean diddly to the
average bar owner (and most club owners here are below average :). Besides
that, don't you think a kid in a club atmosphere for the first time in their
young lives is a pretty easy target ? Try 600 drunken bikers - You're a good
band if you LIVE. :)
FWIW - I don't do Clapton covers. In fact, we don't do but about 4 tunes
(out of 50) that are "oldies" or 'classic rock' - thats why WE don't play
at 'a certain bar' that has Storm opening for Lillian Axe. The owner
there thinks BonJovi and Celtic Frost are one of the same...

I think what Coop has said is pretty much right on for the Springs
area music wise, and what you have to do to get gigs and try to play
originals mixed with covers.
Friz, I can understand what you are saying but I think you're too hard
on cover bands. Like people have said, sometimes one's musical path is
to do nothing but play covers while others like yourself want only to
do originals. I know that lots of musicians don't care to write any
music at all, they are happy just playing covers and adding some impro-
vising here and there, changing the arrangement and so forth. I think
thats great if that is where the band is headed and everyone is happy
doing that, and yes this type of band will make alot of money, not just
here in CSpgs but anytown USA.
If your unhappy with the scene here in town, I say go for it! don't
waste your time here. If you have that much faith in your talent and
material devote your full time trying to get a break elsewhere. Get an
out of state agent that books several states and try your music in
areas other than Colorado. Don't sit and complain about how you can't
get a break because of the way the music scene is here, go out and make
your own break. I once felt exactly like you, so did the guys I was
playing with. We tried and failed but I don't regret a single minute
of it. I think you are in your early twenties from what I gather from
the notes here. I was about the same age and could live on one meal a
day consisting of cheese and crackers, making only enough money to make
it to the next job. You are young with no family, and although I
have'nt had a chance to here you play yet, (I will go to the Marriot
gig) you sound like you have the drive to try. Hope we can meet some-
day soon, after all we work in the same building!

>REALLY want (originals). Do something to attract a crowd (and a lot of

But what if your "proven market" isn't the barroom crowd? It would
seem that the traditional barroom crowd isn't the giant money making
opportunity that it has been in years past. The emphasis on temperance
and the "just say no" attititude, plus the justice system cracking down
on drunken driving, has made attendance at traditional clubs plummet in
the last few years. It's gotten harder for them to make a profit
because they have less people coming through and the people there are
generally buying less drinks.
>Why does it have to limit your creativity ??
Seems to me that the barroom crowd isn't going to respond to originals
that don't sound "familiar", so anything that's very creative or
different isn't going to fly.
I think this is what Friz was trying to say about it limiting your
creativity. Maybe it doesn't specifically limit your *creativity*, but
I think it definately limits how much of whatever creativity you have
that can be played to that sort of audience.
If your originals all sound like old blues songs, then they'll appeal
to the "blues bar" crowd, but try playing an original that sounds like
Primus to that crowd.
> Sure makes one feel good when
>the '30 year old barfly' motivates off the barstool to ask the 'fat women' to
>dance to your originals...
Yeah, it makes you feel good, but is it truly an indication that what
you played was good? Or creative? I'd say it might show it was good,
but it would probably show that it was *not* creative.
>Go to Denver maybe. Of course, then there is no money in it, so you'll go
>broke renting PA, driving and set up (not to mention wear and tear on gear).
But you've said yourself that you're not in it for the money. If
you're not interested in making money, then what difference does it
make whether you play for free or not? I might drive to Denver to see
a good show, why would it bother me to pay for gas to drive there to
play a show? I'd probably enjoy it just as much.
For myself, I like playing original music so much more then playing
most covers that I'd be willing to sacrifice the miniscule income I
might get from playing to play what I want to.
>Better than that, go to LA or Seattle. Your young enough.
Good advice, this is not a place to get "discovered"...
>Bar owners aren't gonna do you any favors, pal. They'll hire a band who pulls
>a crowd, reagrdless of their music. Money talks, bullsh*t walks.
>But like I've said before, but 'kids' (12-21) don't go to

True, and further proof that bars aren't a good way for a band to "make
it"...
>They don't spend money, don't have jobs, and don't mean diddly to the
>average bar owner (and most club owners here are below average :).
I disagree. Regardless of whether they have jobs or not, they
definately DO have money. In fact, I'd say that most "kids" have more
disposable income then I do, and I make a pretty decent salary. What
they don't have are bills! Car payments, mortgages, dependants...
They can spend *all* their money for superfulous things and it doesn't
matter, I can't.
Been to a major concert lately? I'd say the average age at the Skid
Row show I went to a month or so back was well below the average
barroom age, yet they had enough money to spring for expensive tickets,
buy a lot of overpriced t-shirts and other stuff.
Personally, I think that the teen market in boring towns like Colorado
Springs is a huge untapped source of income for someone creative enough
to find a way to harness it.

I take a little offense to that statement. I'm in a cover band, and I can
guarantee you that I'm not "in it for the money". In fact, I'm sure that
by the time you figure in gas and stuff for practice and to the gigs, plus
equipment costs, I'm taking a loss. Why do I do it? Because its a BLAST!
I love entertaining people, its a lot of fun, and I get to meet a lot of
people socially through the band.
Please don't put down cover bands in general. Many of us are doing it because
we WANT to, not because of the $$$. And they fulfill a real market need also.
If they didn't, they wouldn't be so popular. A *lot* of people, when they go
out, want to hear music they already know, not originals! And there's nothing
"wrong" with catering to that crowd!

| I think to state my point more concisely (it was probably lost in the
verbage), the bar audience is not the target audience for most bands
playing originals anyway, especially now that the drinking age is 21 as
opposed to 18. Certainly not for a pop-metal type band like Friz plays
in. Why worry about what happens in the clubs? That's not the right
audience anyway.
The real problem is *finding* your audience. It's not in clubs, so
where is it? How do you get a following when there's noplace to play
but clubs, but the clubs won't let the people most interested in your
music in?
re: Alan
There are good and bad cover bands, I'm sure you know that. There are
several that play around here a lot which have had basically the same
set list for the last 10 years. They sound totally generic and are
excruciatingly boring for people like me to watch. I think Friz is
probably referring to these bands when he talks about cover bands that
are only in it for the bucks. Certainly you put a lot more effort into
what you do with your band then I can imagine any of these people
putting into it. I know when I saw your band last year that you didn't
have that "stale" sound that many cover bands around here have, even
though you definately played some moldy material.

I don't understand why people rip into cover bands as an excuse as to
why they can't get work as an original band? *IT IS 2 DIFFERENT WORLDS*
Those cover bands are being booked in those places for a reason.
Because its patrons want to hear that type of music. If there is that
big a market for originals, than there oughta be a club for it. But
don't blame the cover bands if there's not. Their not taking your gigs.

| re: Dave (.294)
It's my opinion that there used to be a much larger market for
original music then there is now, because club owners have "groomed"
their clientele over the years by booking only certain types of bands.
I also think that the younger crowd is generally more accepting toward
new music, and the change in the drinking age over the last 10 years
has changed the market as well.
There's one club here in town that allows original alternative bands to
play there (in addition to cover bands) and it seems like the turnout
is very similar no matter who's playing. (with the exception of a
couple of "big draw" bands that play there frequently)

Then we gotta pay our expenses.
You gotta love it if you do it. If you don't you won't last because
it is very hard work.
RE: Originals and exposure...
My only point is we use our covers as a vehicle to get people to hear our
originals. It seems to work, as we get people requesting our originals
sometimes, and wierdo people trying to sing along with 'em and stuff...
Not that I really care if I "make it" anyway - I'm an old fart - I'm in
it for the fun, and to help support my rack-habit...

| re: gh
I can't really compare the 2 different situations between there and
here (Boston). But I've played in both Original and Cover (Alans
Bassist) Bands and they are like night and day.
Doing originals was a lot of work, Travel, Bad nights (Usually a tues.
night "New Band Night' until you could prove your worth, with bar
reciets) late hours and heavy competition. But at that time of my life
it was a lot of fun.
Example: Tues. night at Mollys in Alston, No one in the whole place except
the bartender the other *lucky* band and the MC, Billy West (of REN &
STIMPY fame) We drank with "STIMP" while the other band played and when
we went on we did a 30 minute Jam with him as our lead guitarist. It
was great.
Now it's covers, and although we do do a lot of moldy material, It has
now become the *FUN JOB* I am lucky enough to have. Covers or originals,
Playing out was always the best part for me.
I guess we're pretty fortunate here to have so many diverse places to
play. For the most part, covers and originals aren't fighting each
other here.

Yeah, I could see that. I've also seen a place in Denver packed out
on an all-original night (four bands) too. It's definately a drag to
play to an empty house, but I don't think that's reserved for original
bands, as I've seen dead clubs for cover bands too. I guess it just
depends on the night and the place.

guy we have, Craig, "the Super Roadie", sets up all of my stuff
around me, tunes my drums (has a great ear), sets them up onstage,
breaks them down after the show and loads them in my vehicle. If I
go to set up anything myself, he tells me to sit down and relax.
On top of doing all my stuff, he usually helps load in and out all
the equipment.
I would have to agree, that if the roadie you are using isnt very
familar with your setup, then its definitly better to do it yourself.

But boy was I wrong. These guys did 1 Clapton cover, either from
Cream or Derek and the Dominoes. The rest was a couple originals
["Don't Go Messin' with the Kid" was the better one] and a few other
covers from other bands, including a crankin' 15-minute "Voodoo

Poor, poor Davey... gettin stomped all over aren't ya?
I guess it's just arrogant ignorance when you claim one person's taste
in music SUCKS and then have the gall to request that you try sucking on
their (implied body part).
I myself happen to like Type O, but then again I'm sure that there are
a few others in this conference who'd agree.
I don't, however, like Megadeth (I think they suck)....but I wouldn't
start insulting someone because they liked them. Guess that we're on a
higher level of maturity, huh?

I've got a nifty tool and waits for connection to the notes DECNET
object by user-supplied USERNAME/NODENAME parameters, then quietly
disconnects that persons link before they can open the conference. It
works VERY well... Worse than that? It's got a little 'bug' in it,
where people who are victimized by this program can't even send mail
to the host system to beg forgiveness.

Motley's version of Anarchy Is GREAT, and every man should be
proud/jealous of Tommy Lee. I mean he "dumps" Heather Lockler and
weds-up the next hottest girl on the market, Pamela Anderson. I
mean, as soon as Pam gets washed up (like Heather did) who's next?
The man is a God, not only on the drums, but with the women too.
Granted Motley is not nearly as great as they were with Vince,
but they can still rock with the best of 'em.
A couple other covers that are cool;
Faster PussyCat - Your so Vain (I think thats the title)
LA Guns - I'd like to Change the World
Vince Neil - I wanna be Sedated and Rod Stewarts, Blondes have
More Fun...And apparently that Chicago song he did
that the record company axed so they wouldn't have
to pay Chicago, but the reviewer said it was an
awesome cover. Hate how I can't remember which tune
it is though...

No, I did a SEARCH on the Vince Neil note to find the title.
I wish I had heard it ... based on some of the stuff from the
last album, I think he could have done a wonderful job on an
already wonderful song.
I can already picture "record scratching fills" in the approp-
riate places, etc.

Is this guy serious, or is this a bad joke? Someone out there
would actually admit to being an LA Guns fan?!? Did anyone ever tell
this clown that the 80's are over? The music sucked then, and it sounds
even worse today. Motley Crue was always more or less a joke, and they
are partially responsible for the pseudo-metal crap we were tortured
with from about '85-'91.

have another pseudo era.

Yo, Ed, has it ever occurred to you to look around in here,
find a topic dedicated to a band that you LIKE [if we have
any, of course ... but it's doubtful since there are "only"
about 680 notes dedicated to specific bands], and say some-
thing nice for a change?
I also happen to like LA Guns, and Motley Crue, etc., etc.
If they were good in their time they're still good now to
the fans that remember them.

| They weren't good in their time - even I was able to recognize
pseudo metal as pure crap when I was in junior high. Besides, you don't
even have topics about bands like Deicide. If you want to see me say
something nice, check in the Pantera topic.

Deicide - note 490
Check 7.last for an alphabetical band list, and if you're look-
ing for a note for a specific band and you don't find it there
then start a new note for them.
And if I'm in a good mood I might not even go into your new
topic and rag on you and/or the band.

I find myself asking that question daily.....
but that because I have to work with him, not because of his musical
taste. ( which Roolz, Bobby!!)

Alice Cooper did a cover on his "Flush the 80's" album (the one with
the song "We're all Clones") called "Talk Talk" though I can't recall the
original artist.
Kiss did The Dave Clark Five's "Anyway You Want It" on the studio
stuff side of "Kiss Alive 2".
A few I like:
Guns n Roses - Sympathy for the Devil
Live and Let Die
Aerosmith - Come Together
Walking in the Sand
Helter Skelter
Elvis Costello - Don't let me be Misunderstood (Elvis is King!!!)
ELO - Roll over Beethoven (the long version)
Stevie Ray Vaugan - Little Wing, Taxman
Jeff Healey - Blue Jean Blues
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
The worst cover I have ever heard:
Robert Plant and Tori Amos - Down By the Seaside
If I should get depressed I'm gonna stay as far away from this song
as possible. The longest seven and a half minute song there is.

Yeah, it was "Flush the Fashion", but I can picture the cover of the
8-track in my mind and I think there was an "80's" spray painted in the
background.
I thought of another really bad cover...
The Firm - You've Lost That Loving Feeling
...off their 1st album. It sounded even worse in concert.

It all depends....some of her stuff is prime, some of it is waste. :-)
She had a cool voice tho'....unique....Melissa Etheridge really ripped
it off. ;-)
