                But of course...

A whole two albums, both on Capitol records.

ICON - Icon (c) 1984 produced by Mike Varney

ICON - Night of the Crime (c) 1985 produced by
Eddie Kramer (where do I know that name
                       from???)

                Naked Eyes

                Danger Calling

                Out for Blood

                The Whites of their Eyes
                Hungry for Love
                Rock my Radio

IMO, these guys rank up there almost with QRyche
(which I found out Jack had a few extra backstage
passes for and was desperately trying to find me,
                but couldn't. *sigh*)

Why does Mike Varney always find the best
                musicians??

| | Back when I used to live in Pheonix they were called School Boys
They played DJ's once the guitar player Danny Wexler was a
acquaintance of mine but being in rival bands we never got to be
much more than that. They always had the best of everything back
then a couple of there parents being somewhate well off,not to take
away anything from them they all are very talented it just made
all the other bands VERY jealous. After they first got signed it
went to some of there heads pretty good but Danny kept everything
in perspective he even introdused us to Mike Varney and we'd get
somewhat happy at the clubs,oh well I hope they get signed again
last I heard they got droped a while back but are going to get resigned
or have already been signed I'll have to check into that with my
friends that stiil live there. I'll let you know.

From what I heard, the singer quit and went into
some sort of religious phase, and the band
couldn't get their stuff together quick enough to
fulfill their contract to get another album out
by a certain deadline, so they were dropped.
This is just word of mouth though, I wish I had
seen them when they were in Boston. Oh well. I
can't picture Icon without their singer.

resigned with Megaforce records (affiliated with Atlantic somehow)
they are mixing down their latest tape and are supposed to open
up for Skid Row on the nights that Skid Row isn't opening up for
Bon J. this is supposed to happen some time in May-June time frame.
It will be interesting to see if everything happens this way or
    not.

ell, got the new album yesterday, and though it's
not even close to being as good as their first
two, it's still pretty good. A totally new sound
for them. I haven't quite decided who the singer
sounds like yet, maybe Coverdale or Hagar, but
most of the music is pretty rockin', sort of
along the lines of Tesla would be the closest
                thing I can think of.

Hey, hey!! Thumbs down compared to their OLD
stuff, but for all the new music coming out, this
album is still a cut above most of it. Like I
said earlier, kind of similar to Tesla (I wasn't
sure if Tesla sounded like the right band to pick
at first, but I asked two others who it reminded
them of and they both said Tesla) with a bit of
                the newer Triumph mixed in.

Well, went to Icon last night (thanks for the
tix, Paul). There were probably about 100 people
there, which is fine with me as I hate crowded
clubs. As far as performance goes, they were
excellent, but they played too much new stuff for
my tastes. Their mix was also terrible. Drums
sound was a lot louder than the bass which was
louder than everything else. The vocals and
guitars were very muddy sounding. As far as old
tunes, they played three: Under My Gun, Whites
of Their Eyes and Out For Blood. The new guitar
team is not as good. Before, it was like a
guitar duet along the lines of Iron Maiden, now
it's just two guitarists. The new guitarist was
a cool guy. I played a game of chess with him
before they went on. He had a portable computer
with him and was out in the lobby playing chess.
The new singer I can live without. He has one of
those raspy sounding voices (ala Rough Cutt) that
I really don't like. After the show, some idiot
came up to him and said, "I hope you aren't going
to say you took voice lessons." The guy admitted
he never has (big deal). I asked the kid, "Who
are you, Tony Harnell?" The old singer left as he
went 'born-again'. The old guitarist got married
and got out of the whole music scene. Overall
                though, a good show.

                Cheers, Rob

| | I met Drew (one of Icon's guitar players) last week. He told me that
the guy that signed them was axed, and therefore, Icon was also. Such
    is life in sho biz.

He's been unhappy with the band and is planning on starting his own
band when he returns from Paris. He felt he never quite fit in with
the rest of the boys because of his age (only 23).

Drew is a really nice, down-to-earth guy. He still lives with his
parents (Dad is a prominent doctor) in the 32nd St. & Lincoln area (for
those that know Phoenix, you'll know that this area is mega $$$).

Yep, I played chess with him for a short while at
the Paradise... I love this band, but it's just
not the same without that guitar duet. Nothing
wrong with Drew, but it just wasn't Icon with him
and the new singer. Their 3rd album was still an
excellent album, but the first two are at the top
of my favorites list... Hope they work things

I told you guys back in .33 that they were done with. Drew has already
    started another band in Phoenix.

PastelBlue has listings for a self-titled album, "Icon", and
"Paradise Lost". Are either of these any good?

"Icon" lists for about $30 and "Paradise Lost" $16.

I have Paradise Lost "Icon", not too bad....haven't played it in awhile
though. $30 for Icon? Seems a bit high....and the other sounds like a
self-titled first album? I want to find out how many they actually
have done. Have to go to Newbury comics again to peruse their catalog.

im not familiar with paradise lost. hmmm.... the icon albums on cd
are so expensive because they were never released in the us on cd.

icon was the first one and rules
the second was night of the crime which also rules
the third had a new singer and guitarist and pretty much was nothing
like old icon. it was ok, but nothing great. i forget the name.
paradise lost, i have NO idea where that fits in the picture.

I got "Paradise Lost" the other day ... sounds ALOT like the new
Anthrax album ["Sound of White Noise"] but minus the crankin'
    	drums.

Not bad ... definitely better than "Right Between the Eyes".

And PastelBlue informs me that the self-titled CD is unavailable,
so I need another source. Anybody?

Well, "Icon" and "Night of the Crime" are on order from a place
called CDNow ... hopefully they won't wait 2 months and tell me
    	that they've been discontinued. $22 each ... $47 total.

"Icon" cranks ... simple as that. Excellent guitar work by these
guys. "Night of the Crime" is OK after 1 listen, but I'll give it
    	another chance.
