497.0. "Y & T" by CSC32::J_HERNANDEZ (AW Man I think the clock is slow) Fri Mar 03 1989 16:25

This is the official Y & T note. Let's keep it relevent and not
fill up this METAL-RELATED topic with garbage.

I saw Y&T years ago, backing up the Crue. I never bought any of
their albums, but still think they're a pretty good group. I remember
them playing another killer song in concert, "Lipstick and Leather".
Is this song on the same album as Summertime Girls?

BTW, I remember the group talking about their name. They said they
got it from the Beatles "Yesterday & Today".

Thank you for starting this topic! I've been a major Y&T fan for
quite a few years. If anyone gets a chance to see them in concert
I would definitely do so. They sound even better live.

"Summertime Girls" is actually on two albums - DOWN FOR THE COUNT
and OPEN FIRE. "Lipstick and Leather" (definitely a killer song)
is on IN ROCK WE TRUST.

They've been around quite a while but have never really gotten the
recognition they deserve; at least on the East Coast. I saw them
once in California and they had a better following.

Does this band still carry some clout?

Y & T were one of those bands that I got heavily into when they
first attracted UK press attention about 6 or 7 years ago.
(The Rods were another example of Power Melodic Rock of that time..)

Y & T's Earthshaker record does just that....!!

I also bought their "Black Tiger" record (OPEN FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
which had a coupla good tunes.

After that.....well nothin' really, although I did come across a
killer tape of theirs which I came across in an old shoe box thingy.
It was a live set from....I think...(he pauses)...the Reading Festival
about '84. Certainly "Loud an' Proud!"

I'd be interested in a discography and some info on what's currently
    happening?

I saw Y & T about a year and a half ago and thought they were pretty
good. My favorite song has definately got to be Barroom Boogie.
That song was my anthem during my college days.

The last time Y&T played around here was with Motley Crue a few
years ago. The last I've heard from them was just about a year
ago when I was visiting some friends in Los Angeles. I heard an
interview with Dave Meniketti; they were playing someplace around
    there the night I left.

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has heard anything recent
about Y&T. How about you people on the West Coast?

seem to find many albums in the UK, and certainly not some of the
    vinyl mentioned here.

used to get quite a bit of airplay in that area. That was about
five years ago and I really haven't heard anything about them since
    then.

I've been listening to "Contagious" a lot lately ... the title track
is great ! And I like Dave Mineketti's (sp 4 sure ...)style too.
Not many tricks, like dive bombs and hammer-ons, just straight ahead
rockin' !!! Not too many players of the old school left. "Temptation"
off of "Contagious" should definitely be put in the HM ballad top
    10, real good horizontal bopper.

    but I don't like it.

I like "Contagious" a LOT ! And I don't think the added production
hurt a bit. There are some very subtle moves going on in the
backgroud of that album, makes me listen closer ...

There are some cool licks by Dave Miniketti, but it's just not the
same without Leonard Haze. Sure, Jimmy Degrasso is a good drummer,
but they could go back to the basics like on EARTHSHAKER.

I have Black Tiger and I used to love it. Maybe it's time to dust it
off and listen to it again. During college when someone won the "Moped
Award" we'd paraded him thru the dorm playing "Barroom Boogie". It was
quite a ritual and not easy to do. My friend Macaroni won 3 times! I
think that is a record that still stands.

Another one of my favourites is "Hang 'em high" off "Black Tiger".It
is also the starter song on the video that I bought. This just
totally freaked me out as it even better live than on disc. The vid.
gets a bit on the silly side when ROCK the robot off of IRWT comes
on stage.Dave M. then announces that "If you listen to a lot of rock
music you get big balls".About this time the robot deceides to
sratch his nuts and hold up his guitar. But in all seriouseness apart
from the silly robot and Dave Meniketti silly speech, this is a great
video with lots of hard, driving rock'n'roll that guys like me here in
Scotland would love to see; but are currently on nightshift or the
    aforementioned band don't come here.

The new album is called "10" for it being their 10th album.

The first single is called "Don't be afraid of the Dark"

Kinda mushy. The other song I heard is kinda Bluesy I do not

remember the title. But seemed to have a good production and

a bigger sound than previous efforts.

    Oh i am sorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry!

the Album is called "10" for their 10th album. In the past 4 years
it seems to be one of their better efforts. IMO it just might be
in close competition to Earthshaker, Black Tiger and Mean Streak.
The first track/video off the album is "Don't be Afraid of the Dark"
At first I thought it was your run of the mill ballad (It it) but
I like it. "City" is a good bluesy tune with some guitar riffs.
But the think I like about Dave Miniketti is his style so if you
all wanna laugh go right ahead I do not care...8*)

I therefore recommend the album when it gets there Staynz.

But it does kick some a$$ on a few cuts.

    Buy it!

I have heard that Y&T have broke up. I always hate to see a band that
I like call it quits. However, I was glad that this last album was a
pretty good one. I had felt that they were going down the tubes the
past few years especially with the personnel changes.

I would also like to add to their discography their second album which
was not mentioned in this note "Struck Down". This was released when
they still called themselves Yesterday & Today.

I have all Y&T's albums and enjoy them all in varying degrees.Struck
down is "ok" but nothing spectacular. The last album was excellant.I'm
kind of hoping that they reform in a few years time as so many bands
do and most of all tour Europe (especially Scotland)8)

I agree that Barroom Boogie is one of the best, actually I like the
whole Black Tiger album. The vid for Summertime Girls is great,
especially the chick with the "choose me" shirt. Mean Streak is good as
    well.

rest of the album is good too.I always loved Dave Menikettis vocals and
blistering guitar playing.I heard he's off to play in Peter Framptons
    band,any truth here?

    RE: .61
Yes indeed Y&T have broken up. Their farewell concert was New Years
Eve at The Cabaret, a large popular nightclub in San Jose, Ca. that
helped them in the begining. Since I live only 15 minutes from the
Cabaret, I was priveliged enough to attend the sold out show. It was
exellent, of course I am a big fan. Well time to sign off from the
    California party capital SAN JO.
