Conference napalm::heavy_metal

    Extreme, extreme, extreme.  My favorite local band for the past
    5 or 6 years (even when they were The Dream)
    
    They haven't been doing any of my favorite songs lately, and I was
    heartbroken to find out that my all-time favorite (More Than Words)
    didn't make it onto the album.  I go to see them only to hear that
    song, most of the time.
    
    I hear their album is coming out March 14th, their song Play With
    Me is going to be on the soundtrack of Bill & Ted's Excellent
    Adventure, and for those of you who have seen the commercial for
    that movie, that's Nuno playing the guitar.
    
    I hope these guys do great.  They're very talented and have worked
    hard.

    	These guys have been boppin' all over for a couple o' years now.
    
    	They signed their label deal last summer if I remember correctly.
    
    	I'd even bet that you didn't have to drink "9 coronas" for them
    
    	to sound good. (Hic)
    
    	    I probably won't buy the album when it's released, but that's
    
    	just me. I'm sure all fans of Extreme will be very pleased with

                Yeah, Gary's  just  WICKED  unique.   Can you say
                Steven Tyler?   I  knew you could.  Can Nuno .  .
                .  Joe Perry  definately.    I  really like these
                guys (alot more than Aerosmith),  but I'm kind of
                Extremed out after seeing them at  least  a dozen

    I agree that they may look and maybe act like Aerosmith, but what's
    wrong with that?  It's not like they are obnoxiously copying their
    every move.  They have a lot of energy (except for Pat who only
    moves around when he remembers to, they have to work on that) but
    I think they put on a great stage show, and are a lot more appealing
    than a lot of other bands I've seen.
    
    Gary's been called "Richard Simmons on drugs" before, but he has
    toned down the aerobic moves a little and dances around more.
    He used to look like "Sweatin' to the Oldies!"  This is my favorite
    topic in the whole conference.  I love Extreme.

    shipping to the stores on Tuesday, March 14th.  I've called the Minor

    That's the one that Gary & Nuno do by themselves.  It's awesome.
    By far my favorite song of theirs.  The words....
                         
    Next time I see Gary I am going to tell him to take a sec and catch
    his breath before he starts that song.  It's so beautiful and simple,
    But the last couple of times he's ruined it by panting after every
    line.  Spoils the mood.

    gary and nuno did `more than words' friday nite at the channel...they
    where supposed to do a longer acoustic set, but arrived late so
    they cut them off after one song...gary also joined the Drive onstage
    for Aerosmiths' Mama Kin.....Highlight of the nite....at this moment
    they are in LA doing their video ( Kid Ego ). i also think `more
    than words' is a great song....i'm told it might make the second
    album.    great topic...

i'm curious to know what people think of certain aspects of the band
    ( extreme ) :  good points, bad points, etc.
    lyrical content, Gary's voice, Nuno's guit style, the way they present
    themselves, their personalities ( onstage/offstage ) the way they
    dress, who would you compare them to.

    Here I go, on my favorite subject!
    
    They are definitely one of my favorite bands, but I'm not the type
    to have blind spots over their weaknesses, either.
    
    I think they look good and have a lot of energy.  I think Gary &
    Nuno give a lot of life to the show.  Gary used to have a songbird
    of a voice, but now it's starting to slide.  It's still quite adequate,
    and many of the bands of late have proven that it's how you look/act
    that overshadows a lacking voice.  He's pretty good now, but before
    he used to be great.
    
    I don't know about their songs, though.  They have a couple of good
    tunes out there now, but they are getting weaker as they go along
    IMO.  When Nuno first joined, the tunes they wrote were good, if
    not a little tentative, but the second "set" they wrote are the
    ones I like the best.  (Teacher's Pet--my favorite, which Gary &
    Nuno sang in sort of a falsetto, At 'em (sp?) Eat Your Body, Little 
    Jack Horny, Suzie etc)  These newer ones seem to lack direction.
    They have more feel, and the ones *I* personally liked weren't really
    "market quality" too coy and full of double-entendres, very formulated.
    I don't know, I *like* the new tunes, but my SO hates them and his
    points against them are valid.  I think Kid Ego is a dumb song to
    make a video of, but is is appropriate these days...
                                       
    Which leads me to their personalities... I have been friends with
    Gary for a long time (6 years or so) and the shy, sweet person he
    used to be has turned rather obnoxious, IMO.  I think they subscribe
    to the theory that people will make a big deal of you if you play
    the role, which works to an extent, but it's out of hand.  I was
    seeing Nuno at the time he quit Sinful to join Extreme, and the
    change was pretty marked.  He used to be shy and really nice, but
    now he seems kind of snotty.  He's ok, though.  Cute goes a long
    way in my book;^)
    
    My SO (who is a great player, if I do say so myself) says he thinks
    Nuno is a great player, and is really hot, but lacks a little
    technique and refinement.  He says he is a natural talent and if
    sent to GIT or something, would really be dangerous.  He also says
    that if he was Nuno, he wouldn't be able to sleep night thinking
    that he was putting *those* songs on his album.  He thinks they
    lack integrity.  I think Nuno is great, I used to love to listen
    to him play guitar & piano, but my SO has a point.
    
    I love them anyway.  Even *with* Nuno's nose job.

How is the rest of the band? Are they individually talented enough to
play with the band? And do they play well together?

    When I saw them play (only once) I though they were really cool..
    
    The lead singer dude (gary?) and an excellent stage prescense, he
    was fantastic when it came to that.
    
    I liked their songs.  Am gonna pick up the album..
    
    I don't know any of them personally, but I can't stand that yucko
    attitude either.  You can't forget your past and the fans who brought

    Re. a couple back
    
    Paul the drummer is an adequate drummer, and I think that's all
    they need since Extreme is really Gary & Nuno's dog & pony 
    show.
    
    Plus, he has been with the band for like 7 or 8 years now, he and
    Gaz are the only original members.
    
    I think Pat has gotta loosen up!  He's a good guy (or used to be
    when I knew him and he was in In The Pink he used to be really nice.
    Now it seems he's caught that Kid Ego syndrome that goes along with
    being signed and on the top of the hometown heap.
    
    He really doesn't do anything for me as a bass player, though.
    No real feel or rhythm, but that's just MO.

some really thoughtful AND valid opinions being brought forth...i'd
    like to make a few comments, opinions, disagreements. where to start..
    Gary's voice (imo)i he's worked very hard on it for years and it
    has improved noticibly, he's hitting notes now that he wouldn't
    have even attempted, say, 3 or 4 years ago. 
    I also agree that Kid Ego is a lame song and as you say it is
    "appropiate". ( the record company had a big say in the choice ).
    Paul ( the drummer ) may not have a very rocked out image but he
    is a ** great ** drummer and a BIG part of the Extreme.
    I will address the "yucko attitudes", "obnoxiousness", and all the
    other `misconceptions' about Gary some other time.

     i'm surprised to hear that from somebody who has known
     Gary for ( 6 years or so ). i think that if you asked 
     anybody who knows Gary, the person, as opposed to Gary 
     the entertainer, if he has "changed" over the years, the
     answer would be an emphatic `NO'. IMO he does not subscribe
     to any theories nor does he play any roles ( off stage that 
     is ). how he projects himself on stage is a whole diff-
     erent ballgame.  for curiosties sake, can you elaborate.

    getting back to matters that matter, what do you people think of
    the lyrical content of the Extreme's playlist??  

has any body seen "Bill and Ted's excellent adventure" yet...the
    movie with an Extreme song ( Play with me ) in the sountrack.
    Funny movie......the song is used during the chase scene thru the
    mall.......the sound track album is out as we read...decent version
    of the song but it will also be on their album in a better sounding
    take...

    Saturday night was great! (Well, I didn't get to see them, because
    of my age.. but I heard the show was cool, anyone want to fill me
    in?)  But saturday was still cool, I met Peter <DASXPS::PLEVINE>
    after the show, and we went to Gary's house, the lead singer...
    and I got to see the video they just finished for Kid Ego!  It was
    incredible!!!  I can't wait to see it on MTV!  What was really great
    about the video was it was "music".. no half clothed women, etc..
    to sell their music, they don't need it!! No make up.. no "leather,
    spandex"... just them and their music!!!  They will actually have
    people saying "Hey, have you seen the new Extreme video.., it was
    great!  I love the song!", instead of "Hey, have you seen that new
    video out with the great blonde babes in the bikini's, I think it
    was some group called Extreme.."  The album cover for the new album
    is also great.. can't wait to buy it!
    
    As for personalities, they guys are all great! Not one bit snobish..
    Gary and Nuno are cool.. I got to "really" talk with them... and
    they all know about us here at DEC.. Dilly.. watch out!!  8-)
    They definately appreciate your comments about the band..  critisism
    and all..  They're a great group of guys, down to earth and have
    their heads on straight!  I wish them the best of luck!!

    I went to see Flesh and Pieces at Grover's last night.  Gary and
    Nuno were there and I figured I'd meet the situation head on and
    apologized for the things I wrote in here.
    
    Guess things weren't as bad as I had envisioned.  Gary cracked up
    when he found out it was me who wrote all those things in the file,
    he hadn't put 2+2 together and figured it out.  Anyway, he said
    that they are always up for constructive criticisms, and he knew
    that he got my honest opinion, seeing as I never even intended for
    them to see it.
    
    He was super-nice, though.  Not "obnoxious" at all.  Maybe he learned
    something...

    in Portugal the other in LA...you hear all their first mistakes
    as well as the beginnings of the new songs they have now...

    I believe the record company wanted to promote Kid Ego big time..
    for the vid. and stuff.  Be sure to get the album... that will be
    a good sampling of Extreme!!

                Hopefully they  will  have  alot  of  their older
                stuff on this  album.    I  have a tape of a live
                show  they  broadcasted  on  some  college  radio
                station  about 3 years ago.    About  90  minutes
                worth.  Sounded like there were  about  10 people

    cassette/album was only $5.99.
    
    When I got there bright and early to pick mine up yesterday, they
    took it right out of the box and must not have put the sale stickers
    on yet, I paid $7.99 for the cassette in Chelmsford.

    and Nuno got onstage and jammed with Flesh for their song Jam.
    
    He wasn't doing much, though, a little here and there, but Gary's
    brother (Mike, Mark, Mick, Mook, Mack, Mock whatever his name is,

    The Extreme CD is getting plenty of air-play on the Buck home
    ent. system....A review will soon follow.
    
    Two quick comments right now...I like most of the hooks...they wimped
    out Mutha big time (for radio probably), and Nuno's intonation at
    the end of Rock a Bye is just awful...I fast forward on that part.

    Well, I finally got the tape, and we (F. Jesse, and the gang)
    decided that we liked the album, but it sounded a little poseur
    rockish, like Poison for instance.  All in all the album is
    great, I listened to it over and over.  I understand the 'sound'
    though, the record company probably had MUCH influence over how
    the songs would be produced, and EXTREME will have more play
    with their next album.  Does the CD have play with me on it btw?

        Well, the album debuted at #2 on the WAAF "NE Album Countdown".
    
        They played FOUR songs off of it ... the last (I believe)
        was "Play With Me".
    
        When I first turned it on, it was almost over ... and I didn't
        know what it was - I thought Van Hagar was finally reverting
        to the old Van Halen days!!  Sounded good!!

    I've listened to the whole Extreme album...
    
    I like a couple songs on this album, but for the most part
    I don't care for this band. 
    Their lyrics in some of the songs border on embarrassing, and
    it seems like their target audience is 13 year old girls.

    I LOVE Do You Wanna Play With Me... just because of Nuno's incredible
    guitar playing. This band may be better named as NUNO, because to
    me it seems like the rest of the band on this album is along for
    the ride. His playing reminds me of a mixture of Warren DeMartini,
    and Ed Van Halen, but better than both. 
    
    	I have a feeling that the band just needs some real good 
    guidance before they're really going to get anywhere, because 
    with the exception of Nuno's playing on this album, they don't
    stand out from the hordes of other talented young bands on the 
    market.

    As far as their lyrics go, you have to admit that *most* heavy
    metal/hard rock lyrics are not exactly classic literature.

    Cj and F. made me listen to these guys when we was driving home
    from the airport. I think they got a good shot to be pretty big.
    I can't see them headlining a major world tour, but hell, if Poison

    Yeah, most HM songs aren't exactly tremendous literary 
    achievements... but you don't notice that when it's a great
    song.
    	Every Ratt song has lousy lyrics, but the songs are great, and
    it doesn't bother ya. That's not true for me with Extreme's album.
    
    they just sound like an obvious poseur style band, without
    originality. Gary's singing at some times reminds me of  
    LA GUNS' singer.

    I think Gary sounds like a cross between Ozzy and Michael Hutchensce
    from INXS!!!  I think their lyrics are ok...no probs there, but you
    know, I listen to GnR's AFD...their first album, then I listen to
    Extreme, and they just don't compare quality wise (ever ask yourself
    why??  Not like either band has had `more' expreience or anything).  I
    don't think the Extreme album will have a top 10 hit off it, although
    Mutha, Wind me Up, and Watching/Waiting have a good shot at the top
    100.  I mean, if bogus lita ford tunes can make it in there...Extreme
    isn't that bad!

I haven't heard the album yet, but it looks like it may be a hit. In
the first week of release, it was the most added record in the country.

And for those who can't translate that - it means that more radio 
stations across the country added their song to their playlist than
any other song that week.

    I know that we local Extreme fans have a hard time seeing the scope
    of this, because they are making a big deal of them here because
    they are the "home boys" but I was wondering about if anyone had
    even heard it outside of New England.

    Now come on guys..  Now, this is just a rumor I heard, from a band
    that said they are 'tight' with EXTREME, but I can see how it can
    be true.  I mean, how many of you have gotton to see EXTREME live?
    We all know that their music isn't like the way it sounds.  Well,
    I heard that they got in a fight with A&M over the contract, I don't
    think EXTREME wanted their music produced the way it was!  But what
    A&M wants is the record to SELL!!!  So, of course the record company
    wants the album produced to todays market, and today's market is
    Teeny Boppers!  Look at Poison!  As soon as EXTREME gets an established
    'name' they do what they want, not what the record company wants!   
    This is all heresey.. but that's what I think.. I also think A&M 
    didn't do great quality production IMO on this album either, sounds

    I like like three songs on the tape... that are good to listen to.
    But after listening to it once, I said gee this isn't bad, but it
    sounds like poseur music, and I can tell I'm gonna get sick of this
    tape *real* soon.  It prob. won't be a "classic" on my list!!

    I mean, *I* love them and would like to see them on all the time,
    but what makes MTV decide *who* is going to get prime rotation time?

    You know, there are tons of bands on HBB in the same boat, but even
    if they are hard rock and not heavy-offensive-metal, they don't
    get played.  Say, for instance, Bullet boys get played at all times
    of the day (even before they got popular) but other bands, like
    Roughhouse or whatever aren't going to get played.  I can see not
    playing Exodus mid-day, because MTV figures that isn't mainstream
    enough for the average mid-day-ers, so they create HBB, a specialty
    show.
    
    Who decides (before Dial MTV comes into play) that Extreme (of all
    the bands out there) are going to get this rotation?  I would
    think that MTV would *react* to big Dial MTV response, not start
    it up themselves.
    
    I'd hate to think of MTV as a strictly payola organization, though
    I can certainly see that it could be.  For hard rock bands, radio
    plays second in the priorities.  You have apopular video, you're
    stars.  Who needs radio?  (obviously no-one, MEtallica got nom'd
    for the Grammy)
    
    It's hard for us to see the true scope of things because it's local
    news (read: big deal) here.  How does word get out.  Who makes
    these decisions at MTV?  Are the stars of tomorrow "hand picked?"

    It doesn't matter how good you are at the music.  It all matters
    in the buisness end of the deals.  If you play half-way decent tunes
    and get the right promoter and take the right amount of sh*t, you
    will make it.  Look at Twisted Sister...They were a joke!  Dee Snider
    said one day "Let's dress in drag and make a heavy metal group."
     They did and they made millions because of promotions.  If you
    go by Radio or MTV play you are listening to how well promoters
    can pawn their merchandice.  Sales is what makes the metal bands
    become great,  too bad it can't make the metal great...

Well, I agree with what you said, but I just wanna mention that Twisted
Sister is a bad example for your arguement. They slugged it out for 10
years in the Long Island and NYC club scene before getting signed, so
they definitely paid their dues....

    the people they do interviews with.  It was really funny for me,
    because Gary looks a LOT like a really good friend of mine from
    Phoenix (his face).

    if anybody is still interested, extreme hit Billboard for the
    weekending 4-15 @120 with a bullet! the "kid ego" vid will be getting
    medium rotation starting ,i think, next week on MTV, and has recently
    been added to the "Night Track" playlist. they will play the Boston
    Music Awards ( a couple of songs ) then head out for 6 weeks with
    Britny Fox (sp), they will then come home and play Boston. For anybody
    in N.Y. on May 3rd, they'll be at the Cat Club.

Looks to me like the big 'national breakout' for Extreme isn't gonna
happen, at least not right now. Hell, I don't even hear them played on 
Boston radio, and they're *from* here! I've heard "Kid Ego" maybe once
in the past month, and not one other cut!

Perhaps a big bust, eh?

    "national breakouts" don't happen overnight. there album was released
    a scant 6 weeks ago! cut the boys some slack. and since when does
    lack of radio play constitute a bust? ( esp. in the hard rock/heavy
    metal genre )
    even with minimal airplay here in Boston, Billboard magazine has
    them at just under 100 on their top 200 album listing.
    they are in medium rotation on MTV and nowadays their isn't a metal
    magazine that you pick up that doesn't at least have an album review
    on them.
    i think it's a little to early to call them a bust. strictly imo.

    I listened to that Extreme LP on Metal Shoppe the other night.
    Im impressed.  I'll buy the CD.  I want to hear more.

    for anybody interested.....the Extreme is winding down their scheduled
    club tour this weekend with gigs in Los Angeles. Last nite at the
    Roxy, Friday nite in Orange County, Sat nite in Mt. View, and on
    Sunday will film their next video. They will work themselves back
    this way thru Texas, Mississippi, N Carolina, etc., then play another
    N.Y. show.....culminating in a show in Boston probably the second
    week in July, venue unknown. Needless to say, their Great Woods
    gig got cancelled. The album has reached 80 on Billboards top 200.

           The Extreme is finishing up their club tour with shows in
           South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, 
           Lamours in Brooklyn on the 8th of July, New Jersey on the
           9th and will be home on the 10th. They will play a show in
           Boston then head back on the road to do a small theatre tour.

    Here's a gripe that Pete Levine or whoever still hangs out with these
    guys can pass onto the band: 
    
    I've been reading about and seeing Extreme doing interviews a lot of
    late.  You know, it's REALLY getting sickening how much of an act
    they're putting on for the press/general_audience.  I wish they'd just
    be honest about themselves and the band instead of lying.  One thing
    that comes to mind is in a recent interview, they (Nuno and Gary, who
    else?) were asked how the band got together.  They replied, "Well, you
    see we were all kicked out of our other bands at pretty much the same
    time.  We were all hanging out at a local Boston pub, talking about
    music and our influences, so by the nights end we decided to form a
    band".  A band of unwanted renegades is a great concept, and it would
    have been pretty novel if thats they way it went down, but its far from
    what really happened. 
    
    I just wish more rock n rollers would be a tad sincere about themselves
    instead of putting on an act....in time it will really come through as
    to what they're all about.  Their lyrics make them sound hypocritical:
    "Some honesty would serve you better, so why don't you give it a try?"

    Well!  Where to begin!
    
    Flip and I went to the Channel last night to check out Extreme.
    When we got there, (around 7:30), the lines on both sides of the
    building were stretched out almost into the second parking lot.
    I thought they would *never* be able to fit all of us in there,
    and if they did, it was going to be one hell of a sweaty night,
    and it was!  They definately should of had the show at the orpheum.
    The band *In the Pink* opened for Extreme, they started around 8:45
    or so, and played until 9:30, when Extreme's roadies started setting
    up *FLESH'S* (Gary's *the lead singer* brothers band).. Alot of
    people wondered where all the *fancy* equiptment was, but Peter
    had already told me the circumstances over the phone, that "some
    evil person" (quoted by Gary) stole their equipment.  I don't think
    I'm allowed to post the *whole* story, but it was pretty nasty..
    but the show still went on.  They played most of their album, with
    a few covers here and there, and a few of their older songs, along
    with "More than words", an acustical with Nuno and Gary.  The channel
    was packed, I never sweat soo much in my life, now I know what a
    sardine feels like.  But they got a GREAT welcome home.  Philippa
    was much more impressed with them live, than the album, and now
    she knows they really rock.  Their new video for little girls will
    be premired on HBB on Saturday night.  I really wanted Flip to meet
    the guys, and Peter invited us out to "party" with em, but
    unfortunately the guys were tied up (we thought with A&M for the
    equipment problem), and decided to head home around 2:30 because
    I was really tierd, the show had gotton out around 11:30.  Over
    all they played great, they were really pumped to be home, and
    just rocked the Channel!!!

    Pat, the bassist from Extreme, helped form In The Pink, but blew
    them off to join Extreme, so its not surprising they opened the
    show.
    
    Question:  Did FLESH get their equipment ripped off, or was it
    Extreme?!?  It wasn't really clear in your mail.
    
    Also, Flesh is both Gary the singer and Nuno the guitarist brothers'
    band.  Flesh is Extreme reversed.

    Extreme's equipment wasn't really "ripped" off, I don't think I
    am at liberty to say over open notes when I am not totally sure
    of the situation.

	EXTREME - The Roxy, Hollywood, CA

Rating:  Alive and screaming!

EXTREME INDEED!  Not a band to do anything in a small way, the four
Boston lads have harnessed apparently unlimited energy into an
hour's worth of manic, no-hold's-barred rock'n'roll.  Wearing their
influences proudly on their sleeves, Extreme create their own sound
best described as funky Metal.

Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt is that rare breed of axeman.  He's flashy
only in his playing, never stooping to the cliched moves too often 
associated with HM/HR.  'Big Boys Don't Cry' and 'Wind Me Up', from
Extreme's debut album, were the perfect showcase for his six-string
mayhem.

But versatility is the key word here.  Nuno is equally adept with a 
ballad as well.  'Rock a Bye' is a very powerful song that addresses
the issue of abortion.  Tasteful and controlled, Bettencourt teamed
with singer Gary Cherone to bring a hush over the packed Roxy.  A new
tune, 'More than words', with its John Cougar-ish feel, was a beautiful
love song, combining Nuno's acoustic guitar with awesome vocal 
harmonies.

Cherone made for the most entertaining frontman.  At times he appeared
out of control, leaving some in the crown unsure of what to make of 
his unique style.  But when Gary and the boys (Paul Geary on drums and
Pat Badger on bass) turn up the heat and get nasty, the results are
extreme-ly entertaining!  'Little Girls' and 'Mutha' (both future
singles) brought the show to an explosive close.

With an excellent record in the stores and a live show that blows the
competition away, Extreme should find that the road to the top is a 
short one indeed.

    Yup...I remember trying to fit on stage with them at Bunratty's on
    like Tuesday nights!  

    The video was shot at Melrose High School (partially), because Gary's
    uncle is involved with activities up at the high school....and it was
    shot in Gary's (at the time) spacious backyard in Melrose.
    At the time of the shoot they where going with 2 guits ( Hal Lebeaux on
    rhythem and Peter Hunt on lead, with David Rich on keyboards )

    a little back ground on them?  IE:  How did they get started?
    How they got their record deal?  Did they send material out?   Did
    they have and inside contract or did someone see them in a local

    Exterme is playing an ALL AGES show this SUnday nite at Leominster
    High School.  Tix are $10.00 at the door & show starts at 8:30.

    They are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!  There were 75-100 people there very
    intimate show.  I now understand why CJ and others like them so much.
    Their stage show with the lights and all is great! Their stage presence
    it great!!!  The lead singer (Gary??) really knows how to play a crowd.
    They played for an hour and 15 minutes.  The sound was really really
    good for a high school audiotorium.
    
    They will be playing an all ages show at the Channel Saturday the 23rd
    at 1:00 admission is free if you bring a can of food.
    
    Nuno did a solo....The man is incredible!!!
    
    Extreme is now on TCR1 and the Ticketwench's top list of band's to
    follow right next to Farrenheit.  We are just bummed we didn't make
    the effort to see them sooner!

    Well, I went and saw Extreme twice this weekend.  Once on Sat.  and
    then on Christmas night.  Both shows were f*ckin great!!  I was wicked
    physced <--(is this right motorbreath?) that they played some old
    material which hasn't been heard in a while like President, and
    Monster!!  They said they are not going to be around for a while cuz
    they're gonna start work on their SECOND ALBUM!!  Yah, I have a feeling
    it's gonna all old material.  Like words, and stuff.  Anyway just

    I've been listening to the first album (Thanks Ticketwench) and
    can't believe how different it sounds from them live. The album
    sounds over produced and toned down. Their live versions of EVERY
    song is much better!!!!!!!!!!!

    Well, I finally got my hands on the new Extreme demo.  It's awesome if
    your an Extreme fanatic.  There are 3 new songs on the tape and a Frank
    Sinatra cover (which is stupid) JMHO.  But, the three new songs are
    cool "Dance" "If you don't like what you see get the FUNK out" and
    another tune I'm not sure of the name.  Then they've got "Money,
    Monster, Pornagraffitti, He-Man, Words, Song for Love, Suzy, I think
    that's it.  My demo doesn't have the list of songs or anything so, I'm
    just writing this by memory.  But, this tape is great!!  Also, some
    FANTASTIC guitar work from Nuno.  Not sure when this tape is suppose to
    be out hopefully before the end of the summer. - Kim

                I really  know  nothing about Extreme since their
                first album (I did see them about 20 times before
                the album though) and  the  only  ballad I recall
                was Rock a bye baby,  but  as  for  not  being on
                their first album, got me...

    The "Sinatra" ballad that was referred to earlier is actually
    an original Extreme song. Penned by Gary about 10 months a go.
    The album is sorta "conceptual" , so when you hear it in
    it's entirety, it might fit better.
    "More than words" is the ballad & "Song for love", i guess, could
    be called a "power" ballad, will also be on the album.
    They are off to LA today to record the video for the first single,
    "Decadent Dance".

    The album is due out ( in the US ) on Aug 7th, with them hitting
    the road about 3 weeks later. They want to do a couple of shows
    before they head out and will probably do that under 
    an assumed name in a small club.

    The DJ at CITI last night played the new Extreme single, Decadence
    Dance.  My reaction?  More radio-oriented, substance-less, sappy
    pop rock for the masses!  This thing was SO over produced, with the
    9-million-people-singing background vocals and the BIG reverbs
    everywhere.  This tune was totally forgettable for me...the only thing
    I remembered was it sounded like Nuno is using a new amp setup, and
    those sappy background vocals cluttering up the mix.  Is this the
    future of metal?  If it is, I'll switch to rap...it's much more
    inventive and fresh!
    
    I'm sure I'll love hearing this one on the radio every 2 minutes!

      Oh Great! I bought the Extreme CD after reading this topic and
    was actually fairly pleased with it! Now I hear they're going 
    processed pop - YUK! 
      Ya know Buck, I know you immensely dislike Gary Richrath and I
    can see why, mainly because he (w/REO) took the money route and
    became a millionaire playing sappy ballads. I much preferedd his
    earlier playing. I remember playing the sh*t out of Golden Country.
    His guitar playing really never evolved into much over the term
    of REO Speedwagon, he became more like just another member of the
    band and not the flash guitar type from the bands early days.
      What amp did Nuno use (or still use)? I should have read my 
    CD liner, huh?

    I've not heard Richrath out of the REO space.  Yeah, the sappy ballards
    were pretty tough on some of us listeners!  ;^)
    
    Nuno uses a 100wt Marshall (2210) and a 100wt Laney AOR in the studio
    (the M-word is on the left in the mix, the Laney on the right).  Both
    amps are stock, with the exception of Groove Tubes.

    NO young artist(s) are signed by companies these days solely on
    their music/musical abilities!  So many apects regarding image, 
    sellability/marketability come into factor.  You can have the best 
    tunz in the world...if you don't have an image/niche carved out for
    yourself...hey, the record co. surely ain't going to create one for
    you...it's not their job, and they have better things to do with their
    time than create styles for imageless musical individuals.  Ask any
    A&R rep., they'll tell you the same.

    One of the things I think that helped Extreme was they took their show
    out on the road by themselves...proving to the record comp. they were
    willing to do the legwork needed to get their name and reputation
    around without the rec. co. having to do it for them!  They like to see
    incentive like that.

    Well, I', not too sure it's that different. A road show to the record
    companies constitute a promotion, as they say in Support the Record.
    If you're gonna sell records to prove profitability you have to promote
    it or no-one will buy it, or the sales won't be as good without the
    promotion. It's therefore not so much incentive to be signed but a form
    of advertizing for a current product, and later products by building an
    audience. People like the Dead who tour forever like giving shows for
    thier fans. But I still think a good show is the best ad for a record.
    
    But i wonder, if you can sell records and do good shows, why do need to
    get a record company at all? Maybe to make a big killing, but I'd
    rather keep the record and rights myself and only contract for
    manufacture and distribution. This to keep my profits. Why should I
    give any profit to people who could not care less 'bout me except for
    the profit I can give them? A band like 2LiveCrew who own thier own
    company will make alot more from a small distribution than Extreme,
    who are basicly a product line of whoever signed them.
     Musicians for years have been ripped-off by big business and only by
    taking control of the business themselves can they protect themselves.
     Of course I could be wrong,  what do I know, just some thoughts...
     

    Bottom line on why you need a label ( in Extreme's case A&M ) is
    that they have the MONEY. To produce it, distribute it, promote
    it. The only way for a rock band like Extreme to "make it" is to
    hit the road. The label provides the cash for bands to *successfully*
    tour. Again in the Extremes case, they toured for almost *2 months*
    straight late last summer, they would NEVER have been able to afford
    that tour on their own. They had a VERY comfortable tour bus, a
    driver, i think it was 6 roadies, meal money, they stayed at good
    hotels....that takes plenty of cash. A >good< part of Extremes success
    is their live performances, without the tour support from A&M it
    would've been impossible to promote their "product".

Well, keep in mind that A&M isn't 'giving' the band anything. That money is 
loaned to the band, and is paid back from future royalties. Same goes for 
recording costs - the artist pays all these expenses in the long run....

    But I would tend to avoid luxury if I couldn't pay for it up front.
    I think alot of big bands ( VH for ex. ) own thier own company so they
    might even own the buses, trucks and all.

    letting other people handle thier businesss, Boston for example.
    They lost alot of money to a crooked accountant, and now Billy Joel,
    but who cares about him around here.

    it is much more difficult to "make it" being signed by an independent.
    Their have been bands that have fared well, but the majority just
    don't have the financial resources to compete in the big leagues.

    Ah yes Alan...recoupables...
    
    Anything a band does (Videos, tours, t-shirts, albums, etc.) are 
    fronted finanically by the record co, and the cost is put into  what
    the ycall recoupables.  The tours are to help sell the album  and pay
    back the recoupables.  The band makes NO MONEY until all recoupables
    are paid for.  When Def Lep released Hysteria, they had recoupoables in
    excess of 4 Million dollars!!!  Needless to  say, when they sell 10
    million albums in the US, they made a penny off that lp!  From what I
    read, Extreme's 1st lp only sold like 300,000 copies...not a whole lot
    for a band...I mean, 300,000 probably just  paid for their recoupables!
    (if not leavuing them in the hole a bit, they did have some fancy

    "Extreme 2: Pornograffiti" will be released tomorrow ( Tues 
    08-07 ). The C.D. & tape formats have some neat pictures as 
    well as an extra tune ( Hole Hearted ). I don't know if 
    tomorrow will be the world wide release date, sorry Flip. :*)
    They have an "in store" at Strawberries in Medford ( Wellington
    circle ) on Wed 08-08 in the afternoon. The video for their
    first single ( Decadence Dance ) was premiered on MTV last Sat 
    nite. They had a record release party in Hollywood last week at
    a club called Spices. They played 4 songs with Sebastion Bach
    helping out with the chorus on "Get the funk out". 
    They plan on playing out in early Sept, with an Orpheum ( in
    Boston ) show sometime late this year.

I love the way Nuno plays.  I think Extreme is a kick butt band that

album to go platnum.  To do so, they gotta write some metal
ballads...IMHO.

    Nuno has chops.  I think I like his playing on this album more...it
    showcases more of his own personality.  I thought the last album had
    too much of a Van Halen influence, and I *hate* guitarists who sound
    like VH!!!  I thought the solo at the end of Rock a Bye on the last
    album s*cked, but that's MHO...as i said his playing is much more
    appealing to me on the new album...I think the touring did him a lot
    of good.
    
    I agree with Coop...the lyrics have gotta go!  They sound like a
    collection of rhetorical cliche's to moi.  
    
    I think Song for Love should do well for them on the radio.

The only time I ever saw an Extreme video, the first thing I noticed
is that they never really show ANYONE for more than a flash of a 
second...  Fast moving vids.

    IMO...they are going no place fast unless they polish up thier show.
    Gary talks WAY to much and they take an awful lot of time between 
    songs.  Also, Gary leaves the stage way too much.  They are a fun
    band to watch etc but can't see them hitting the big time until
    they clean up their act a bit.

    I too was also at the Extreme show Friday nite ( Renee - I thought I
    saw you there... 8^) ). I enjoyed the show.. I thought they sounded
    good. There are some things they could polish things up on that Renee 
    mentioned. I thought that Gary was too much of a center piece for
    the band. I also think he was still under the weather thus the reason
    for leaving the stage alot. They played basically the whole
    new album very well. Only a couple from the first album. I was more 
    disappointed that they DID NOT play Mutha or Big Boys.  Still I am
    looking forward to seeing them in the very near future. 
    
    As for the Orphium's security - felt like I was getting ready to be put
    into lock up. Never been searched so heavily before.

    Duuuude, would you do me a big favor?  Would you get me a list from
    Nuno of his entire equipment setup???  Why?  I think Nuno's guitar
    sound is the BALLS!!!  I'd really like to know what he is using
    now...it sounds way different (better) than when he was using the ME-5
    and the Marshall 2210...I know it's gotta be some new setup for him!
    
    Now, onto the show.  I, too, am looking forward to their return
    appearance to Boston sometime in the near future.  I think this band
    really shines LIVE.  Their albums tend to sound a bit lackluster,
    to ME, anyways, but I always get psyched when I see this band live!
                                                                        
    I didn't like the fact they mainly played the new album...I second
    Wayne's comments about the abscence of Big Boys and Mutha.  i would
    have liked to have heard more of the 1st lp (esp. that exerpt from
    Play With Me...whada teaser!!).  The vocals were really good.  I
    thought Nuno could have been louder in the mix (he was kinda drowned
    out from where WE were sitting, which was on the far right side of the
    stage).  I thought the pacing of the set was a little weird.  I think
    Decadence Dance would have been a better opening tune myself!
    
    All in all they were godo though, and am looking forward to seeing them
    again.

	I thought that the concert was very good. Especially since I got my
	tickets very late, and to my surprise the seats were on the floor in the
	third row....  I think that Gary did a great job, he sounded good, he 
	was very active, and how about him climbing and jumping between 
	balconies.  Let's face it folks Nuno is a god.  Nuno did a great job 
        especially with the 'Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee'.  Pat and Paul 
	were 'there' and they played pretty well.  I think that Alice in Chains
	suc*ed.  The drummer and the bass player were good, but I couldn't 
	hear the lead guitarist or the lead singer (except 'if you think I am 
	queer, then go fu** a steer').  I think Extreme put on a great show, 
	and I had a good time (except for being frisked  "what are those",
	"They're keys! why what do they look like?").  I wish Extreme played 
	more from their first tape though...

    About not playing "Mutha".....they have been playing Mutha for 5
    years as the "Extreme", Gary & Paul were doing a lamer version for
    3 years prior to that in the "Dream".....they are flat out bored
    to death with "Mutha" & feel that they have more substantial music
    to offer than "Mutha don't wanna go to school today...."
    
    They had no say in who opened for them. I'm sure Flesh would have
    opened if the choice was theirs.
    "Alice in Chains" is for sure an acquired taste. I had the "pleasure"
    of seeing them open all last week for the Extreme down South, and
    they kinda grow on ya.

    No, no I think Song for Love is an AWESOME ending tune.  It is well
    paced, strong, and emotional (and catchy, too!).  The quasi-spiritual
    ending with the lights dimming thru the fog against the organ music was
    neat!  My b*tych was the opening tune.  I thought D.D. would have been
    much mure kick a$$ tune than It('s a monster).  Esp. since they used
    that opening piece (???  A funked up fairy tale?) as the show opener.
    It was a buzz killer when they DIDN'T go into D.D. (I thought).

   
    I see whatcha mean with D.D. but i would think that D.D., being their
    single, that maybe they might want to build some momentum first before
    layin the radio hit on the crowd. ( that is JMO )
    
    The reason i asked about the encore was that i thought people might
    think that S.for L. was a buzz killer after being pumped with "Play
    that funky music". I personally don't care where they put Song...as
    long as it is in the set.  :*)
    I'd also like to see "Watching & waiting" added.

    Ted's..." soundtrack from a co-worker.

    I'm getting more and more into Extreme's music and Nuno's playing
    expecially, but their lyrics are pretty pathetic.  You'd think that
    with talant that could write that kind of music they'd be able to do

    there is the Metrocenter Mall, which is about 5 miles from where I

    Some notes from the Extreme show at Clubland in Worcester on Friday...
    
    Show started at 6:30pm -- tooo early
    Danger Danger was very good. Great opening band for Extreme. They
    played for 50 or so minutes with a two song encore.
    
    Extreme was very skimped on lighting and props but the sound
    was much better than the Orphium show. They only played for 70 minutes
    (Probably have to blame it on the house for this one). They left out
    a lot of good songs again. We were out of the place by 9:15pm... 
    
    Jetboy cancelled out on this tour...
    
    
    Anyone else go to the show??
    

    I thought the sound was a little "muddy' at times, maybe too much
    bass? They had to be off stage at a certain time so Clubland could turn
    into a dance club, thats why the set was cut short by at least 2 songs
    (Song for love & and i believe Play that funky music where cut out )
    6:30 was much to early to start a show and at 16.50$ a tix much to
    short a set.
    They played a sold out Ritz in NY Sat nite and their video for "Get the
    funk out" premiered on MTV that same nite. 
    They'll be in FLA this week then Gary and Nuno take off for Germany for
    a small promo tour the week after.

    Mike is doing fine. He feels a bit uncomfortable, but has perfect
    vision in the other eye and counts himself very lucky. Flesh has played
    out a coupla times since the "accident" and Mike did excellent. 
    BTW Flesh are being seriously wooed by a coupla giant record companies
    and could be signed soon.

       Well I got my chance to see the awesome Nuno and company in action
    friday nite at Killington. All I can say is that I'm impressed! We sat
    up in the balcony section no further than 15 feet from Nuno. This guy
    is one of the best if not the best axeman around today. They starting
    playing around midnite and played a total of 10 songs. The band is 
    very tight and they seem to really like to play to a bar crowd! Nuno's
    fingers were a blurr!

    Kinda like Ritchie Kotzen in some ways...super chops, but the
    playing needs maturity.  Give Nuno 10 years to hon his chops

    still playing in 10 years then he might be added to the greatest's
    list. Extreme is a talented band....the next album they record will
    tell if they are destined to be considered great..

    Which brings up another subject...Do you think Extreme will ever break
    into the nationals?  I mean, their music is just 'odd' enough that they
    might only enjoy a cult status.  I find it funny that with their 2nd
    album, I have YET to see a video from it on MTV, and they havn't been
    picked up by a big headliner yet.  Sure, they've been touring, but on a
    somewhat smaller scale.  I mean, in retrospect, look at Winger...they
    are on album #2, and their videos are flooded on MTV, and are moving
    from one major tour to another.

    Re -1.  Well MTV are calling them part of the 'new music' scene
    (whatever that is) based on the number 'Get the funk out'.  And they
    are being covered here in Europe.

    	I agree with you. I think technically Nuno may be a better
    guitarist than Eddie. I think Eddie > Nuno for originality,
    inventiveness, and his riffs are instantly memorable. I think
    if Eddie ever took serious lessons while he was learning, he'd
    be mind-blowing. I believe he mostly taught himself everything
    he knew, but I could be wrong.
    
    /Mike...You can say a lot of guitarists are better than EVH, but 
    I think Ed's writing/music goes a long way. He's written some 
    CLASSIC riffs, and he's the reason why a lot of sh*t-hot guitarists
    got started in the first place.

      behind ya switching in the effects as they are needed. The warm-up
      lead guitarist of course had to do it all himself, but Nuno was
      free to just play when his time came around.

    NuNOSE(tm) blatently claims to be one, it's quite obvious to the rest
    of us.  That's what bugs me about these people (who worship VH), they
    ALL SOUND ALIKE!!!  Ever hear Paul DiBartolo (formerly of Bang!, now
    with Spread Eagle) play?  Great chops, but they all sound like
    re-hashed Eddie licks (cuz they ARE!).  And then you have Dug Blair,
    another hopeless Eddie rip-off...and on the other hand, we have Chris
    Impellitteri, the bogus-Yngwie clone!  I applaud Paul Gilbert and Tony
    MacAlpine for getting out of this rut too...now they're their own
    players, but before they were just cheapo clones.
    
    Why should I give these people credit for being original if all they
    do is sound like (a poor imitation of) someone else?!?  You know what
    is ultimatley bogus about NuNOSE(tm), the song Mutha...  First off,
    NuNOSE(tm) didn't write that song...it was written 3 years before he 
    joined the band...so he re-arranges the riff a little bit, and steals
    the riff from VH's "unchained" to do it...originality plus here people!
    Then he claims to have written all the songs on the album...bogus!!

    'the biz', and he told me that if Extreme screws up this tour with

    success and [lack of] acceptance in the marketplace, and are
    threatening to dump them if they don't start 'happening'.

        Nu is the one plastered over the guitar rags, and Nu was the

    They've never "screwed up" in the past while on tour. They play to
    capacity 99% of the time, they ALWAYS show up to play, have been enthu-
    siastically received in every city, and have a critically acclaimed 2nd
    album.
    Contrary to what this gentleman says A&M is VERY happy with the way
    things are going, SBK ( their management ) is also happy, and a 3rd
    album will be forthcomimg.
    Granted, there may be a "lack of acceptance in the marketplace" at the
    moment, but with the Winger tour coming up people are hoping that the
    reason for this non-acceptance has been the virtual invisibility of the
    band on a bigger venue level. 
    It is very difficult to break national playing clubs, especially with
    the glut of bands out their at the moment. The Winger gig is 
    ( hopefully ) just the next step in the bands progression.

    I think that is what he meant by the context of that quote...ie, this
    tour with Winger will give them the exposure that they have not 
    received on this level til now (venue tour), and if afterwards the 
    band does not reap any gains or success from the exposure they received
    on the road with Winger, that A&M might be p*ssed with them.  Of
    course, I really can't say what this gentleman meant by that comment...
    the above is only my best guess.

    their is quite a bit of second hand information that is circulating at
    the moment about the band, as with anything in life one must be wary of
    the source.
    I've not heard anything negative from A&M, SBK, or the Extreme in
    regards to performance or sales.

    More Metal new hot from the Hollyweird presses:
    
    Nuno was the hit of the NAMM show last week in Anaheim, CA.  Washburn
    has this big booth set up, complete with super-large video screens,
    etc.  Nuno was sort of just hanging out, promoting his N-Series line of
    signature series Washburn guitars.  From what I understand, it wasn't a
    clinic perse, but Nuno just kind of noodling about on the guitar.  I
    heard the mass of people around the Washburn exhibit was 50 people
    thick for the entire length of the show!  Interesting observation ...
    when Nuno did a clinic at EU Wurlybird a while back, the store was
    asking $3.00 admission...no one would pay it, and the day of the
    clinic, they had to let people in for free!!  So there you have it,
    Boston musicians refusing to pay a measly $3 to see Nuno play, and
    Californians going mad over him...go figure!
    

    
     Nuno made 1/4 of the cover of the new Rolling Stone.....Good article
    inside. I feel the band has been blacklisted by some of the Rock
    stations....our very own WIZN in Vermont won't play them...even the
    soft ballad "more than words"....yet they play other rock bands that
    are less talented. Hell and example is ..we have a concert coming up
    with Deep Purple and Winger, sponsored by this station, and they play
    Deep Purple but give no airplay to Winger. That stinks! ...anyways
    back to Extreme....Rolling Stone gives them credit as one of the most
    underrated bands out there today...along with alot of credit to Nuno
    for being an underground AXE hero to alot of people.

      If you get the chance..see them!..They are high energy and Nuno's
    guitar licks are super-charged. The last time I saw a new band come
    on the scene with a guitarist as great as Nuno was VH back in '77/'78.

      The only members of the band that my SO and I watched when we saw
    them in concert were Cherone and Bettencourt....they can replace the
    other players if they ever had to....but then again maybe they won't.
    Look at the Stones...most of the players in that band suck the big

    Pete, Paul would smoke you so fast you wouldn't even know you were
    being inhaled if that's the point you are trying to make.  That guy
    does some serious sticking.  I have sat there and analyzed his drumming
    at least two dozen times seeing them live and some of the stuff he does
    amazes me every time.  Just because it sounds simple doesn't mean it
    is.  That guy is ROCK solid.

    I definitely don't agree. Just because a drummer is solid doesn't make
    him good, it makes him a good time keeper. A good drummer is that but
    he/she's also creative, intead of taking the easy way out all the time
    they'll come up with something new. I'll give him one thing and that
    is he does have a good sense of accenting and fills.
    
    Now I don't know if the band keeps him back or he does himself but
    there is alot of room for improvement in what he's playing to the
    songs. Maybe I come from a different school of drumming or something
    but a drummer is not just a time keeper. Paul is a time keeper. I know
    the guy is talented and all, but he's not my kind of drummer. Scott
    Travis, Charlie Benante, Clive Burr, and Nicko are my kind of drummers.

    Yes, Paul is a time keeper.  But he's not JUST a time keeper.  I
    haven't listed to either of Exterme's albums, but speaking from seeing
    them live more times than you could shake a stick at, he is also a very
    dynamic drummer.  He has incredible sticking and rudimentary abilities
    as well as some fair linear talent.  In many ways he reminds me of Neil
    Peart, not because he is fancy or anything, but in the way he plays to
    perfection, almost like a machine.  I love those drummers you mention
    as well, but in a different way.  You are definately underestimating
    this guy if you think of him as just being a timekeeper.
    

    
      When I saw them at Killington in January..you couldn't see the
    drummer because of the way the bar/hall is arranged, but you could
    hear him! He did make his drums speak that night. Everyone does have
    there own opinions and for every reason that drives some of you away
    from these guys...theres a reason that makes me want to listen to them.
    But what the f&*k..that's why music is so diversified.

                He keeps Nuno from sounding just like another guitar
    player....The way he accents the songs. If he sounded like the 
    drummers you mentioned, it just would be EXTREME.
    He is much more than a timekeeper....He know what makes a great 
    song.  That to me makes a good band, not some egotisical skin-basher
    not caring for the song and just going off to make himself look

In the French Rock magazines, Extreme got an excelent critic. They said it was 
one of the best album since VH 1. Unlike their first LP, Pornographitti is 
distributed here. That helps. Also I saw the video of "get the funk out" 
several time on the Top50ish (kind of) musical (only) channel we have.

Anyway there getting bigger and bigger, and IMO they deserve it, their latest
album is fantastic. Nonu's playing is amazing but the rest of the band is good
too. Composition are excelent. I like the way they mixed lots of musical
influences together.


Does anyone know what other date they are doing in Europe other than in the UK?

    	While station-hopping on the commute home last night, I heard
    "More Than Words" on KISS-108 (top 40, dance station).  I wasn't too
    surprised by that.  *But*... immediately after hearing it on KISS,
    it was on WVBF (easy listening(!), top 40)!!!
    	
    	'VBF didn't make a big deal about Extreme being local so it seems
    the station played the song on the merits of the song along.
    
        Do they have a video for "More Than Words"?  MTV would really go
    for a song that has potential for a large market share... and we all 
    realize how profitable a hit video on MTV can be.
    
    	Wonder if this may be the start of something big?  Then again,

    I think this video make just break it wide open for them,if they
    get enough air time on MTV.  The video is in black & white.
    Plus it has the bass player and the drummer!!(which I thought would
    never happen!)  Their just sitting there reading and lighting
    lighters while "the other two" are playing the song.

    I think it sux how eMpTyV can make or break a band.  There's an article
    in Rolling Stone about Extreme and the tough time they've had making it
    on the music scene.  It seems that they don't project (and don't want
    to project) the tough/studly image that eMpTyV demands from their 
    Metal/Rock bands.  
    
    eMpTyV has all but put the read light to Extreme videos in the past,
    but since "More than Words" is getting such airplay nation-wide (it's
    ALWAYS on the radio.....) hopefully that will change..
    
    And I'm not even an Extreme fan, but I do see talent (mainstream that
    it might be).

    Boston Music Awards ( probably just a coupla songs ).

    the end of August ??  Any truth to this ??  What a break for the boize

    stuff from "porno...."I didn't like the older stuff as much,is it as

    of guitar player,he says he cringes when he hears some of the older

    This is a review of the Extreme concert in Utrecht, Holland, which is part
    of their current European tour.
    
    The concert was on Wednesday 8 May at the Tivoli club in Utrecht.  The
    concert was a total sell-out, not difficult for the Tivoli as it isn't
    that big a venue, and there were a lot of people at the door looking
    for the off-chance ticks.
      
    Me and my friend arrived 10 minutes late, after first doing some Kendo
    training, so missed the beginning of the support act Saigon Kick.
    I have never heard, or heard of, Saigon Kick before so I did not know
    what to expect.  The number they were performing when we arrived was
    not exactly inspiring, but then they changed tempo and I grew more and
    more impressed by them.  Fast guitar work and strong vocals, only the
    drummer was a bit lame, reminded me of Dio a bit but much more
    versatile.  Good range of songs, from hard rocking to near thrash
    speed.  Don't think they will ever progress beyond a support act but
    they will always be a good one.  But they even managed to get the
    laid-back Dutch moving at times.
    
    They played for about 40 minutes and then there was the customary (read
    irritating) break while equipment was moved around.  The only good part
    of a break is that you can manoeveur into a position near the front and
    next to some pretty girls (^8*.  The only negative point of the concert
    was the waiting for the start of the main act.  Extreme took their
    time.  They took so long that the Cloggies started up with their
    national (football) anthem.  Ole, ole, ole, etc.  Then the lights
    dimmed, an intro note started up, then Extreme BURST on to stage with
    their opening number 'Get the Funk Out'.  Wow what an intro, they
    literally took over right from the start.  I was about 15 feet from the
    stage and could feel the energy generated by Gary Cherone and Nuno
    Betencourt like a physical thing.  This looked good.  My only problem
    was, being so small next to the Dutch I always had to crane my head to
    see anything.  Still the music captured everyone and there was moshing
    and diving all over the place.  These dudes have it all, energy, magic
    guitar work, great songs (nearly all from Pornografitti) and cool rythm
    section.  Gary Cherone has great stage sense, at one point he jumped up
    on the speakers at the side of the stage and climbed half on to the
    balcony to get close to the fans up there.  The humour that they showed
    also marks them as special, you can see that they are good friends too
    and this helps the crowd identify with them.  When there was a funny
    break at the end of Decadence Dance, the Dutch started up with Ole, Ole
    again.  This intrigued Gary so much that he asked them to sing it
    louder so the band could pick it up.  And they did, amazing, most bands
    would be peeved at what amounts to a taunt, Extreme made it part of
    their act!  More rocking followed then there was "More than Words". 
    You could hear a pin drop.  Ballads normally spoil the rythm of a show
    but this didn't, must be good timing.  Even the ubiquitous drum solo
    was OK, not too long (just long enough for the rest to grab a beer) and
    it finished by reintroducing the band, so it was tight.  Then of course
    there was Nuno's solo piece.  I don't like grandstanding normally, but
    in this case I will make an exception.  This guy can play, he must have
    gone through the entire repertoir of what it is possible to do with a
    guitar and all of it sounded like his soul was totally involved in it. 
    The crowd loved it, and I could see the look of jealousy on my friends
    face which really said it all.  The encore was a wee bit disappointing,
    only 2 songs, but then I noticed that it was dead on midnight, so I
    think that was all they were allowed to play.  Tivolli is in a built up
    area so that is probably it.  Sums it up, the crowd did not want to go
    home.
    
    A great concert, probably the best I have seen in 10 years as there was
    something for everybody.  Don't know if Extreme would work in a bigger
    venue; get the feeling that they need to be close to the crowd to
    really work.  So if you got the chance, go and see this, an experience
    you wont forget.

    I've gotta change my stance on this band.  The first album didn't do
    *anything* for me.  In all fairness, the only thing I heard from it was
    "Kid Ego" and maybe bits and peices of others.  But after listening to
    the new album constantly since I got it - whew, these guys have got
    something here.  It's a good mix.  IMO ... I hear bits of old VanHalen,
    Bulletboys, and a bunch of others.  The guitar work is blistering while
    still retaining some feel, which is a new concept these days.  Good
    album ....

    I'm torn.  I like the SOUND of the first album...inyourface rock n
    roll.  Some of the compositions on the first lp really suck IMHO (rock
    a bye...aack!).  The writing is much better and more cohesive on
    Porno..., and Nuno comes forth more as a "player in his own"...I felt
    he delt a tad too much in the "I worship EVH" vein on thie first album. 
    The sound of Prono though kind of grates on my nerves after a while. 
    All that brilliance (8k and above), it really grates my ears.  Also,
    I've found I liked some songs after they were re-mixed/re-produced
    (like More than words, version 3).  I think Song For Love could be a
    major hit for them if it was re-mixed with a different producer for a
    totally different sound (more of a Scorions sound.,..the current is far
    too 'dark' sounding).

    Great review GAZ. Good point bout them havin fun up their. They ARE
    good friends which definately impacts their music and (imo) seperates
    them from other bands because of this chemistry.

    Cloggies is a (slightly derogotary) term for the Dutch on account of
    the traditional dutch footwear is wooden clogs!  Ole doesn't really
    mean anything (except at a bullfight) and is just a chant for football
    matches.

    Well, I've traveled over 10,000 miles since April, and lemme tell ya,
    even in bumf***, wherever, More Than Turds are all over the airwaves!
    
    I switch the radio constantly, searching for good songs, and this has
    been on several stations at once!  What a hit for Ex-Dream(tm).  It's
    also a cross-over hit...I heard it on a few religious stations (have
    become very fond of these of late!!) and some C&W as well!!

    Anyone hear NuNOSE(tm) on Rockline or some similar call-in, nationwide
    interview-type radio show last night??  Sir NOSE was in PA, just done a 
    show in Philly I believe, and I think he was a tad too excited for his
    good, cuz he really made an @$$ out of himself on the show!!  Some of
    his comments were really off-color, which were meant to be funny, but
    didn't come off like that, so, it was rather embarrassing!  Also, Nu's
    replies to questions seem to be getting a bit canned.  Maybe people ask
    the same dumb questions over and over, but the replies still seemed
    canned (not un-true, just over-used).
    
    Anyway, that was this metalheads opinion...

    Does anyone like the first album? I think it`s dire. I got it when it
    was first released,and took it back to the shop to change it for a 
    different band.

    I have the debut. At the time i thought it was quite good.
    In retrospect ( esp since "Porno" was released ) i find "Extreme" a bit
    weak in spots.
    "Porno" simply blows it away. I think even the band will admit that
    much.
    The songs are stronger, the packaging better, and the production much
    more superior.
    The debut had its moments ( Watching, waiting - Little girls ), but
    suffered from poor production. They went thru numerous remix's and a
    coupla different producers who didn't always see eye to eye with
    Extremes "vision" of what they should sound like.
    
    Also, many of the songs on the debut were "older" songs that the band
    had simply outgrown by the time they recorded them, but were obligated
    to include.
    A good example of this is the song "Mutha". It was written 9-10 some
    odd years ago but A & M loved it, so it got included.

    I'm glad Mutha got included...it was a fav of mine from The Dream
    days...glad to see Gary remembers his roots!  (although, I wasn't
    thrilled with the arrangement/sound of Mutha that made it to album)
    
    I agree some material on Extreme kind of blew (Rock a Bye comes to
    mind), but I think even the SOUND (for what its worth) was an important
    step in the bands progression.
    
    Buck, who kind of likes Nu's tone of the first better than the 2nd (his
    tone is just a tad too high-endy now...at first I really liked it, but

    thought it a "progressive" song ( for the Extreme , anyways )
    concerning something other than adolescent girls, being tardy from
    school, and the such. I liked the strings in it and the overall feel of
    the song. 
    As far as "Mutha" goes, Buck, i too enjoyed it years ago. But grew
    tired of it years ago, also. To me, its a tired old boring song. Thats
    not to say it does not have merit.
    I know tons of people who really dig it, thats cool, its all rather
    subjective any old ways.

    Oh, the theme is cool, but having the eng/produer background, I always
    tend to hon in on that stuff first.  *I* don't like the arrangement,
    and the production, I felt, was weak.  The song itself is good, but I
    wish it sounded different.  Same goes with Mutha...I hate the arr and
    overall production values.  My ear is more in tune with whats happening
    on Watching..., Kid E, and Play...  You know, that in-your-face r+r
    with not-so-much gated verbs, etc.

    I hear ya.  And I can see why Extreme has left out Mutha and other tunz
    from their current setlist ... very understandable from their
    perspective, but, I think, rather disconcerning from, say, a new fans
    perspective (someone who heard "words" and went out and bought both lps).
    A lot of people don't know that Extreme is like 3-5 years behind 
    themselves compositionally speaking.

    To me Extreme is Mutha - MTW - Suzi - Play that funky music - Rock a
    bye. Because Extreme is a VERY versatile band.
    They do ballads well, they rock with the best, and they can get funky.
    Thats fine that you feel that they are "kick *ss", nothin wrong with
    that. But to pigeonhole them as JUST a "kick *ss" band is to sell them
    short on their talent to diversify.

    You've distorted what i said a bit. I said the song was progressive
    "for the Extreme". Where as most of the early stuff was of
    adolescent yearnings, here comes this statement song of sorts. A song
    of substance ( IMO ) as opposed to "Mutha don't wanna go to school
    today".

    acoustic type of thing.

    Let's face it. More than Words is one of those songs that can get
    played on WBZ AM radio as well as WAAF. Huey Lewis did this real
    well.
    
    Whether they did that on purpose or not, I don't know. I have my

    I don't think it was a conscience effort on their part to cross over.
    They were quite frustrated at the lack of airplay for the first 5
    singles, they had no idea that MTW would do what it did. That came out
    of nowhere. 
    They always felt MTW *might* be a hit...but a #1 crossover with a
    bullet type of hit? Ya just can't predict that type of thing.

    I like the 'More Than Words' ballad!  It is at least a totally
    unapologetic out-and-out ballad, and not the half-fare that the like of 
    the Scorpions have been churning out for years (I like the Scorpions
    too before anyone gets at me).
    
    What Shawn would do well to remember is that both 'Get the Funk Out'
    and 'Decadence Dance' were issued well before 'More Than Words' made
    the scene.  If it was meant to be an attention getter, then surely the
    release order would have been reversed!
    
    I don't think Extreme I and II can be compared.  It seems, in some
    ways, to be two different bands.  I liked the first album, but I will
    only listen to it from time-to-time as it is not particularly exciting
    to me (fav tracks 'Kid Ego and Rock-a-bye').  Porno, however, shows
    much more maturity and the band sounds much tighter throughout.  I like
    Numero Nuno(tm)'s high end playing and think that he more than
    justifies the attention that he is currently getting!  Porno becomes
    one of my permanent CD collection!

    Sales figures have nothing to do with it!  I honestly doubt that sales
    figures would be considerably higher on the album after MTW anyway.  I
    presume that it was issued as a single!  MTW came out when Extreme
    started their Porno tour in the UK.  I assume that was good marketing
    practice, but I suspect that album sales would be much more to do with
    the exposure of the band during the tour.  Their concerts were (are?)
    sell-out and for good reason.

    If Extreme didn't consciously 'release' MTW as a killer, runaway
    ballard, well, they're certainly thinking of that stuff now.
    
    The next logical single is Hole Hearted...it's already starting to take
    off on it's own.  However, Nunose(tm) recently stated that their plans
    are to re-release Get The Funk Out (bad move imvho there Nu!).  Nu
    stated they didn't want people to think they were an acoustic-based
    band by having those singles back to back.  GTFO is *ok*, and is
    probably more of where Extreme is at, but IMHo it didn't float that
    great the first time, and won't fare much better the second time
    around.  HH is a great tune, and I think it should be released. 
    Although, I'd love to remix it and take some of that slide guitar
    out...it annoys me after a few sections!  ;^)

    Instructions to Lansing Field:
    
    From 495, take rt 3 south.  Get off at exit #27.  At the top of the
    ramp, turn right.  Go thru a set of lights.  After those lights, keep
    watching on the right hand side for a street that has a bunch of signs
    at the corner, (bingo sign, Lions club, those types of signs).  Take
    that street and you'll see the park.  I'll try to take a ride by there
    tonight to find out what the name of the street is.
    
         I'll be there!!  I don't know how they are going to do this, but
    if I can park near enough that I can watch the game from the truck,
    then you'll find me sitting on the hood.  If you can't park near the
    field, then you won't find me around the truck until the games over.

    I went to the game.  Had a ball, got some great pictures.  The band and
    the dj's were all pretty good with a bat and glove.  I was surprised. 
    The people that won a chance to play on the teams were also pretty
    good.  It was a 7 inning game, but at the bottom of the 7th, Extreme
    tied it up 14 to 14.  The went an extra inning.  WAAF got 2 more runs
    in the top of the 8th, and with 2 men on base in the bottom of the 8th
    for Extreme, someone homered, giving Extreme the win.  It was a great
    day, a little hot in the sun though.  I got my picture taken with the
    Hillman, AND I got my picture taken with, none other than,
    
    
              Liz Wild, the Creamcheese Bitch!!!   AWESOME!!!!!
    
    
    
    My oldest daughter got her tank top (Not the one she was wearing)
    signed by the singer and drummer.
    If anyone came and looked for my truck, sorry!  I never imagined that

    I have once again got tickets to see Extreme in Holland.  Last time I
    saw them in Utrecht and tickets were priced at about 4 pounds.  This
    time they are playing in Arnhem and it costs 12 pounds.  The price of
    fame.  Still, the wife has tickets to see Diana Ross in November and

    Peter Levine was quick to point of the band was re-releasing Get The

    single)".  Pete said they didn't want to release two acoustic numbers
    in a row, as it might give people the wrong impression of the band.

    Yes, Nuno *did* say in that radio interview that they would release
    GTFO as their next single, but what *I* was saying was in my previous
    reply was that it wouldn't catch.  There have been many bands whos
    released singles have been misfires...like when Aerosmith released
    "Chip Away" in 1978, but their huge hit that summer was their cover of
    The Beatles "Come Together" for the "Sargent Pepper" movie.  GTFO is a
    good rock song, but I personally don't think it's the kind of material
    long-standing hits are made of...it has a narrow market appeal, whereas
    "MTW" and "HH" have been cross-over hits.  As mentioned earlier, in my
    jaunts around the US this summer, I've heard the above two tunes on
    College staitions, christian stations, rock stations, easy listening
    stations...etc etc etc (You flip to a lot of stations when going cross
    country!).  GTFO really only applies to the rock station, hence my

    I don't question it at all.  IMHO, it's much better for a band to have
    an identifiable sound and style than to release a hodgepodge of singles.
    In fact, it's that aspect of PG that I find a downfall.  But I know that
    Extreme and a lot of their fans think this is a plus of PG, so it's
    six-dozen of one or half-dozen of the other...
    

    Some good points raise, however, as much as I like tunes like Decadence
    Dance, It('s a Monster), Suzi, and When I'm President..., I don't think
    ANY of thsoe tunes are going to get the band anywhere quick.  If at
    all, SFL would be a good tune to work them into a 'heavier' band sound
    from the two acoustic numbers.  Again, it's the cross-over appeal of
    the number.  
    
    I almost never heard DD on the radio, and seldom GTFO.  If this is 
    really the genre the band wants to be recognized in, then I think it 
    would do them good to concentrate their writing efforts in it.
    Subsequently, I think it's their harder rocking numbers which are the
    weaker musical material on the lp.  The songs are far too guitar-riff
    based, with not enough melody/hook emphasis on the vocals.  I'm a 
    guitarist...when I get It('s)... in my head, it's the guitar riff,
    not the melody...same goes for When I'm Pres, etc.  If you review the
    popular "heavy" songs of our times, they all had solid vocal hooks...
    something I have yet to find coming from extreme.  Look at the success
    of Aerosmith...their songs stand on their own vocally, and is what a
    lot of the non-musical listening public remembers.  It's just my
    opinion Extreme are still too tied up in impressing the other million
    or so guitar players of the world.

    A question for extreme gutiarists;
    
    I've tried the main riff from decadence dance noted earlier but i've
    had to tune my guitar down to D rather than Eb. Is it my cd player or
    what? - everything else is okay at E (440)..

    Hmmm... the tune is definatley Eb. if I may be as bold to say that I
    think the previously entered version of the Decadance Dance riff is 
    slightly wrong.

    I saw Extreme play at Hammersmith last night and was really
    disapointed. 
    
    KingOfTheHill supported and were amazing. Couldn't fault the band. they
    had stage presence (the singer really got the croud worked up) and they
    had the tunes and they grooved all evening. They did a version of Wild
    Thing at the end, and sung "WIld thing, you make my tits swing"!!. This
    had the audience laughing their butts off! To be honest, I enjoyed KotH
    more than Extreme.
    
    Extreme entered with "Its a Monster" and it was really slow. I
    don't know if they slowed the pace down for any reason but it plodded
    too much. They did that with a number of tunes including "Get The Funk
    Out".
    
    Pat and Paul were fine, very solid, very tight - what more can I say ?
    
    Garys Vocals were pretty bad on entry, and whilst he had lots of
    energy, in an attempt to be cool he spent a lot of time stood on a
    platform with his back to the audience shaking his butt. May work for a
    video but live it didn't feel like a "band" thing.
    
    Nuno's playing was ok, although he didn't warm up for a while.
    After a few tunes they played "Play With Me" (a track taken from their 
    first album that only appears on the CD version). And guess what ? They
    stopped the song just before the solo section. He did play the solo to
    the song but he did it as part of his solo section and it lost the
    momentum by that point. Nuno's solo consisted of some pretty cool
    percussive stuff which I never heard before (like HEAVILY muting notes
    and doing legato stuff and letting some notes squeeze through - sounded
    cool, more like a bongo solo than a guitar solo). He then played a
    simple repetative lick and just grooved around it - simple but very
    effective. Then, out came the dry ice and it was time for his melodic
    stuff, which to tell you the truth sucked. I'm not sure if it was
    improvised or what, but I've heard him play A LOT better. He played
    'Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee"  which is an ok piece I guess, but
    they didn't play 'He-Man Women hater" at all. Nuno played some other
    stuff (as mentioned, the 'Play With Me' solo) and overall I was a bit
    disappointed. 
    
    Generally the band were lazy. They missed queues for backing vocals,
    Nuno didn't both to turn off his distortion for some of the more funky
    parts and numerous other bits and pieces that bugged me.
    
    Anyway, at the end the said that they were re-realeasing Get The Funk
    Out and that they'd like to shoot a new video after the show, so we
    hung around and they shot the video. Afterwards, Nuno was talking to
    the crowd about how British audiences have gotten themselves a bad name
    being 'too cool' to go crazy at gigs so a lot of US bands won't play
    over here. He said something like you should stop pretending to be cool
    and just enjoy yourselves, but he was getting really worked up and
    you could tell he was pissed. My opinion ? wait to you see the new 
    video and you tell me weather the UK fans are 'too cool' to rock. I
    think not.

    sounds a bit like the black crowes. i saw them recently in glasgow and
    was really disappointed,especially with the singer who missed every cue
    possible (when he bothered to sing at all).

Sounds like the same show I saw in Denver.  I was *PISSED* when Nuno stopped
Play With Me at the solo...  I was bummin' that he was NOT gonna do it live.
But, he saved the day (for me...naturally Cindi was ecstatic the whole time)
when he finished it.

Maybe it was just the show (those guys have GOT to be tired as hell), but I 
didn't notice a loss of energy by re-arranging the lead like that...And the
more I think of it, the more I think Nuno is being very clever.  He KNOWS
that we (guitar-heads) were all goin' "Aw man, don't be a whimp!  Play it!", 
then he came back and SMOKED it.  I smile now, thinking that he messed with
me...

    He didn't do it live because he CAN'T do it live.

Wrong!  Thats the whole point.  He made everyone think he didn't (couldn't)
do it...  Then did it in the middle for a 20 minute guitar solo, which
just transitioned back in the end of Play With Me.  Nuno shreds.  He's
also a master showman if you ask me.

    I thought Kingofthehill were ok.They got a very lukewarm response from
    the audience in Edinburgh but for me they blew it when they say
    "wild thing,you make my dick swing"a bit on the immature side.I
    would've let them know but the bass player looked an animal and I was
    in the front row,within easy grabbing distance.

    I think the most impressive thing I've heard from Nuno is the solo
    on "It's a Monster".  I can't tell whether he picks or taps it.
    
    BTW, there's a demo version of that song on the new Guitar For The
    Practicing Musician collection (Volume 2).

    I saw Extreme a few weeks ago and I think this is the solo he crosses
    himself before,no bloody wonder!!I think it was picked but I can't be

Is this the solo he does on accoustic?  Awesome stuff.  This guy is getting 
better and better.

Needless to say I saw Extreme in concert in Arnhem last week!  I saw them in 
Utrecht earlier this year and the only thing that I can say is that they get
better as they go on!  The sound in Arnhem Rijnhall really sucked but the band
managaged to play well above it!  The support was King-of-the-Hill and they were
awful.  I only caught the last 3 numbers from them which was just as well!
They played an awful rendition of 'Wild Thing' substituting some of the lyrics
for the immensely purile and childish 'you make my dick swing'.  I hate bands 
that decend to this sort of level!  Miss them if you can!

Extreme are amazing live.  The amount of energy that Gary Cherone gets through
in an evening could solve the Bulgarian energy crisis!  He has also got one of
the best voices in rock today; a recently formed opinion!  They played a track
from there projected new album (due out early in the New Year) called 'Colour 
me Blind' or something similar!  Difficult to form an opinion on it but it 
didn't quite fit with the Pornograffiti set!  They also played a reworked 
version of Mutha... which was very good, though difficulet to sing along too if
you were using the timing of the album version as I was (^8*.

The finale was a brilliant version of 'Song for Love', really powerful and 
a worthy ending!  The definitive band for the 90's.

    Extreme were on a British music show singing "hole hearted" live.Nuno's
    guitar sounded terrible and Gary started off sounding bad but got
    better.I wish they could've played more but they had other crap to

    Anyone heard the new Extreme single yet?  Well, the new/old Extreme
    single...it's a re-mixed version of GTFO, and AAF has really been 
    playing the "funk out" of it lately!
    
    I *still* don't like this song, and the re-mix does nothig for me.
    It's worse, if anything.  Drums, horns, and vocals are way up in the
    mix.  Guitar is down, and bass is almost in-audible!  The flanger on
    the lead solo really makes me Brrrr.
    
    I don't know what this move will do for the band career-wise, but I
    still contend a re-mixed version of Song For Love was the way to go.

	I have never heard before).  It was on Rock Wars against
	Ozzy.  They pummeled Ozzy!!!!   Extreme with their new song
	is now the Rock Wars champ!!!!   Cool song.  I forget the
	name thought...

	It is not a song off of Porno or Extreme....So I guess it is
	new...

	B side of Little Girls the single.  It has the feel of the first

    It's not a 'new' song, it's an OLD song, re-released.  FWIW, they're
    saying "SHE'S a nice place to visit...".  The track was from the 
    pre-PorNOSEgraffitti sessions, and was released as a B-side on a single.

    I thought for sure it was him, but as the video went on and
    got near the end, it showed him more, I don't think it was him...
