They are supposed to have a similar sound to the new Whitesnake.
They are all good musicians - it should be killer.

A quick review of BADLANDS - I got the CD 3 days ago and there's
a copy in the tape deck in both cars and I keep the disc in the
CD player .... I *kinda* like it. As a matter of fact, I'm listening
to it right now ...
There are a few cuts that sound very similar to Whitesnake, mainly
due to the vocals. Also, some of the softer acoustic cuts have
a Zeppelin feel about them, but in a tasteful way, not like Kingdom
Come's sound. The guitar lines sound a lot like Jake's work on
"Bark At The Moon" with Ozzy, especially "Dream In The Dark" which
was on the Head_____'s Ball last Saturday. Jake E. Lee really shows
some diversity here, I guess this project gave him more room to
dabble than working with/for Ozzy. He even does some slide work
on 1 tune, and plays keyboards on several others. Ray Gillian plays
some harp as well as the vocals, so you get a dose of the blues
too.
It rocks in places, lays low in places, but it exhibits a lot of feeling
throughout ... and there's an extra cut in it for ya if ya buy the
CD ...... which make it about 49 minutes long (just long enough
so the last cut doesn't fit on 1 side of a 90 minute tape !). To
me, there isn't a bad cut on it, depending on what kind of mood
you're in.
Scary (a BIG Jake E. Lee fan !)

| I'm such a Jake E. Lee fan, if his band was doing Country I probably
still would have liked it. I'll admit I'm slightly biased. It's
more of a "back to basics" kind of album, not that heavy at all.
And if you're in a "technical" or "heavy" mood, this album won't
do it for ya ! But .....

To Scary and anyone else who gives a sh*t,
I've had the new Badlands album for about a week. For the first five
days it did not leave my CD player. This is one of the best guitar
oriented albums I've bought in a long time. The intro to the fifth
song ROCKS! Has anybody heard any info on a tour? FYI if you're
debating between getting the CD or tape, get the CD, the bonus
track it has on it is great!

| Just got this one too. The first tune really turned me on, and the
rest kind of left me wanting more like the first one.
I liked the little clean/acoustic intros/pieces thrown in, pretty
tasty.
The problem I have with most of this album is that it sounds very
Zeppelinish. I'd say they sound just as much like clones as Kingdom
Come and probably MORE so then Whitesnake (or some of the other bands
which were tarred with this). Not that that's an entirely bad thing,
but one would think they could be a little more original then that.
The singer especially is just loaded with "Plant-isms".
Of course this is just an initial feeling having only listened to it
once so far, perhaps my opinion will change some as I listen to it
more.

| A couple of notes from a recent addition to the HM conference. For
anyone who is interested Ray Gillan was in Black Sabbath but never
recorded with them.
He did however contribute vocals to some songs on two albums put together
my Mel Galley's (ex Guitarist with "Slide It In Era" Whitesnake and also
Trapeze) brother Tom. Both are excellent and also include contributions
from a whole load of people like Glen Hughes, Neil Murray and brother Mel
himself. The first was called "Phenomena", the second "Phenomena II -
Dream Runner".
On the Badlands front they have just released a new album which in my
humble opinion outdoes even the first album. It's not instantly
accessible but is all the more worth getting into for that. My only
(slight) reservations concern the somewhat derivative song titles and
the fact that they wear their infuences for everyone to see. (Not
necessarily a bad thing, especially as those influences are solidly
early seventies - Humble Pie, Led Zeppelin etc.)
The album is called "Voodoo Highway". Go out and buy!

| Record Co.'s don't "push" anymore. This isn't the 70s. Record
Companies are no longer in the business of making careers for people!
It's up to the artist to totally do the legwork for their success,
which is why some performers like GnR, Madonna, etc. go for the
controvery/shock value thing...lotsa free press helps sell them records!
These days, a record company is going to sign the band whos dragged
their butt around the country in a van playing their music to the
masses, spreading their name, and getting themselves known. The days
of Queensryche-style "we have a tape but don't play out much" contract
deals are gonzo.
Any band dying these days, I blame the band more than the company.
