Ya, I'm from the Binghamton/Endicott area (Union Center if anyone
knows of where I'm talking about) and went to college at RPI
(Troy area - armpit of New York). I've heard of Masters of Reality
several times but never had the opportunity to catch their show.
Everybody I talked to said they were pretty awesome and always told
me to make an effort to see them. Apparently (and obviously from
their group name) they tend to get their influence from Black Sabbath.
Which right there tells me they've at least got some brains when
it comes to REAL heavy metal!
Do you know the members names? Wondering if I know any of them.

 Apparently (and obviously from
their group name) they tend to get their influence from Black Sabbath.
Which right there tells me they've at least got some brains when
it comes to REAL heavy metal!
Well, yes, sort of. They do owe something to Black Sabbath (and
to old Pink Floyd and others) but really MOR is very unique. This
doesn't show so much on their album but it really did in their shows.
One thing I find very odd is the presence of a southern rock tinge
in a few of the tunes on the album. Like ZZ Top on acid.
Do you know the members names? Wondering if I know any of them.
Chris Goss - Lead vocals (and has recently elarned geetar)
Tim Harrington - Lead guitar
Mr. Owl - keyboards
Googe - bass
Vinnie Ludovico - drums
When I used to see them, they were a 4-member band (no Googe or
Vinnie) with Mr. Owl and another guy (forgot his name) on keyboards
(that's right TWO keyboards) and no drums (drum machine). He is a
typical pounding type drummer (which I hate - I like John Densmore
[Doors] type drummers), and it reminds me of a lot of the heavy metal
"pretender" bands out there today.
Now before you say "NO WAY," believe me this worked! In fact, I
think the real drums take away from their sound. I usually hate
*anything* electronic, but these guys actually made this combo
into an awesome "wall of sound."
Everybody I talked to said they were pretty awesome
They were. I really hope they haven't changed their stage shows.
They were known in Syracuse as THE Halloween band. Chris used to
go on these GREAT between-song tirades, and I'll always remember
their Halloween '84 show - incredible!
Yes, the album is out (at Tower Records).

The band takes another step toward national recognition. WAAF actually
played their tune on the radio! The reactions, so far, seem to fall

sound.

RE: SEAN/BEER=LABATTS
I bought the Masters of Reality album this past weekend, because
I was curious after hearing you give them the five-star treatment.
I like the album/band very much, they have a cool style. The lead
vocals are clear, and the music is rock-blues at times and more
metal at others.
A few of the tunes remind me of the Doors, like "Magical Spell"
and "Candy Girl". In that light, I can see why they are probably
great to see live, their music seems to lend itself towards good
rock theater.
Beware HM'ers -- Masters of Reality is not speed metal, nor strictly
Heavy_Metal. They do crank it at times, but I think their style
is more akin to Cream and the Doors. I do recommend the album.
I'd really like to see these guys live, I'll be on the look-out
for an appearance locally, eh SEAN ??

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. 1) because I'd hate to have
people think they wasted their money on *my* recommendation and
2) because I really do think they are good.

Good point. I should have mentioned this, but I guess I got carried
away! I forget that metal nowadays is a lot different than it
used to be. I'll admit I like the older HM and this band is
*definitely* a throwback.
But they've got a certain something that makes them very new, too.
Even their slower tunes seem so *intense* to me. Good comaparison to
other groups. I always used to say mix Black Sabbath, the Syd Barrett
version of Pink Floyd, the Doors, and throw in a good dose of
electronics and you'd have MOR. Well, the electronics are gone now, but
everybody changes........ I find it intersting that everybody seems
to make the Cream comparison - I guess I don't know Cream well enough.
I'd really like to see these guys live, I'll be on the look-out

Chris Goss (singer) says they probably won't even be starting a
tour until June. I get the Syracuse equivalent of the Phoenix
(I subscribe to it just to get MOR info!) and they mentioned an
album release party in North Syracuse that I'm gonna try to get
to. I'll see what they say about getting out on the road. This
band used to have and intense act even when they were a small
outfit, so I'm hoping for big things.
The guitarist is a kick. He looks real freaky (long hair now,
but used to be very punk and spiky), but he's the nicest, shyest
guy. And a good axe player.

Hi! Me again with more news. Sorry to be a read-only noter around
here for the most part, but I must admit, I'm not as up on the new
stuff as I should be. When Sweet regroups or B..C. puts out a
new one, I'll be more active. Anyway.......
I seems that MTV doesn't feel like playing MOR's video for "The
Blue Garden," because they can't find a place on the rotation for
it. It was produced by the same guy who made a lot of Def Leppard
videos and is fairly psychedelic.
Their next video will be for "The Candy Song" (wouldn't be my choice),
so I suppose that's their next attempt at a single. KNAC out of
Los Angeles appears to be the biggest station heavily promoting
them. :^(
They've started a small tour, playing with Skid Row in Long Island
and Hawkwind (talk about blasts from the past) in, uhh, where was
it NYC or Burlington, VT. I can't remember (geez, I always get those
two cities confused :^) ).
Keyboard player Mr. Owl continues to be in/not_in the band, I guess
the record company wants him out (opt for the "BIG GUITAR" sound),
but the fans love him, so........
Album release party in Syracuse was *LOUD*, and the bar ran out
of "real" beer halfway through the set.
I suppose I'll keep posting even if nobody hears of this band for
a while, cause I still think they'll "go big."

ROCK Short Takes
----------------
MASTERS OF REALITY
Masters of Reality (Def America)
--------------------------------
TIME WAS WHEN HEAVY ROCKERS KNEW
how to get down and dirty without losing
sight of the tune, and *Masters of Reality*
recaptures that sound better than any
album since "Mountain Climbing." Sure,
the Masters like their riffs dark and
drony, but they also have a taste for acid
blues and an almost shocking fondness
for melody (plus a signer who can make
the most of it). Forget the Cult - this
band is for real.

Despite the name,Master of reality do not sound like Black Sabbath
whatsoever.Mystical,yes.Sinister,no.
In existence since 81 M.o R.have certainly come a long way from
their days as an experimental electronic band with a drum machine
and singer Chris Goss using keyboards. Goss now plays guitar along
with Tim H.a man known only as Googe throbs on bass, and Vinnie Ludovico
drums.Their roots might still be implanted in blues and psychedelia, but
they're definitely not a bunch of boring old hippies.
This bodacious slice of aural pie sounds akin to Johnny Winter meeting
Cream. From the opening strains of the instrumental entitled Theme
for the Scientist of the Invisible. Then Domino comes in and kicks
@ss before an intense trip through The Blue Garden.Getting High
boogies,as does The Candy Song.Magical Spell strolls along with
a ripe Kinks/Doors good time lilt thats likened to Eric Clapton
meets Ray Davies on the way to Jim Morrison's!
Master of Reality effortlessly exhibit a gamut of moods.

Well, the Masters are #1...........
In the Netherlands!
On the Independent chart. :^) Oh well, it's something.
Other news: Apparantly their first video is a DOG. Made by Jean
Pellerin (noted for directing several Def Leppard videos), it appears
he decided MOR wasn't worth much effort, although "The Blue Garden"
is a real ominous little ditty.
Next single, as stated previously, "Th Candy Song." One review
I've read: "AC/DC meets the Beatles." I don't particularly like
this song; I'd rather see
"Domino"
"John Brown"
"The Eyes of Texas"

| I picked up the Masters of Reality cassette a coupla weeks ago, and finally
got a chance to listen to it a little bit. I've only heard side one, and
only once, so this is just an off-the-cuff opinion.
Bascially, I like it. I don't *love* it, but I do like it a lot. They sound
sorta raw, but at the same time the album has a real neat/precise sound to it.
I suppose that is Rick Rubin's producing that does that. I imagine that when
they play live, there is a lot more 'noise' that helps out the overall
'atmosphere' of the band. The record is a little bit too dry for me.
Other than that, I do really like it. It reminds me a lot of early Blue Oyster
Cult (no wonder why you like them, Sean!). Also, I can hear lots of Cream
influence in them, although not so much bluesy as in Cream's experimental
stage.
I have to listen to the whole thing for a few times more to tell whether it
will grow on me, or whether I'll get bored......

Despite good reviews and the excitement about having a mojor-label
group, hoopla surrounding the band is dwindling back in Syracuse.
The bands first video was supposedly a joke (I haven't seen it).
MOR was forced to drop Mr. Owl - good friend, keyboardist, and fan
favorite. Steve Latham, the band's friend and manager has met the
same fate. Score another one for record companies. And where's
that "tour?"
Good side. The record is still being played in L.A. and Holland.
"The Candy Song" will be a CD single (I don't like the song, but
if it gets them some notice, I'll take it).

Britain's New Musical Express reported in their July 15 issue that
the Masters have moved from Syracuse to LA. Actually, only Chris Goss
(singer) has - he got married.
Things don't sound so hot. Chris Goss: "Our lives haven't changed.
They still suck. There's no money to be made unless you sell a
half-a-million LP's. You're broke. You beg the record company
for money. A couple of weeks later, you're broke again. Everyone
in the band has been living the lifestyle of a musician, which means
unpaid bills, getting thrown out of appartments for unpaid rents....
it's become a big monster."
Oh well, while he's wallowing in despair, Spin magazine gave the
band a good review (I haven't read a bad one yet).
MOR played a gig at the 1500-seat club The Palace in LA and will
probably do one more Syracuse date before a European swing (they
seem to like them over there).

it looks like the band is over before they even really started.
Don't know much about it, just read a lot of quotes by the rest
of the band about how ripped they were (can't blame them).
Geez, I wait 6 years for their first album, and they break up after

I wouldn't really call them H_M ... more like "progress-

The guitar is very good in most of their stuff, and I
like the vocals. He's got a good voice.
The intro, and then "Domino" kicks some serious butt ...
and "Eyes of Texas" and "Keep Walkin'" (or whatever it's
called) aren't far behind. "Kill the King" is well done,
with the effects on the vocals.

Delicious Vinyl, a new label, liked this band so much they are
re-releasing the CD, even though the band has split up. Their
opinion is that the album was not marketed well by Def Jam and
is better than sales showed. They'll be putting an extra track

As far as the band members go, guitarist Tim Harrington and drummer
Vinnie Ludovico have a CD coming out with their new band, The

Crimany, I wanna be rockin' when *I* get old! If Ginger's got the
chops and the desire to do it, I say MORE POWER TO HIM! I don't watch
someone perform to get off on their physical beauty, but on the beauty
of the music.
Stereotyping S*CKS! It's discrimination and I don't like it one bit.

Ginger Baker influenced my drumming when I was young like no
drummer ever has. I was in Jr. High when Cream was really strong
and having an older brother I really took to his style. For his
time and I repeat "for his time" there were no double bass drummers
that really used them for anything besids looks. He brought rock
drumming to a new light. He's still tops in my book.
I went to see him in Denver last year at a drum clinic. He was
very friendly and talked about his years of drug problems. He said
he was 56 years young last year so he's no spring chicken. He also
talked about his years of Olive farming in Italy while he was kicking
Heroin addiction. The guys been through alot and he can still tear up
a drum kit for his age. If you want to compare drummers his age look
at Charlie Watts, now thats a 50 year old drummer.
I think he's a great drummer and always will be to me. I talked with
him briefly when I got him to sign a copy of Wheels Of Fire for me.
Thumbs up to Ginger Baker!!!

No, Mike's here in the Springs. He works down at CX01 (or is that part
of the building called CX02?), pretty close to the DCU office. You
guys should try and hook up sometime!

Yeah, I'm here in the Springs. I'm glad to see there are other
Ginger Baker fans out there! Like Greg says, I work at CXO1 on
the 1st floor.
I forgot to mention in my other entry that he also lived in
Africa for awhile on some kind of ranch. He said he has always
been intrested in African Percussion.

Children, children. No, Eric Clapton can't bang his head, but it ain't
his job. A VAX can't plow a field, but does that mean a VAX sucks ?
Do you people still wet the bed at night ? All these discussions
about, "... *my* band is best, so *your* band must suck ..." get pretty

was, how can I say it, stupid. That may be a good word. I mean it's
like trying to compare apples to oranges. They're both round, sorta,
but they are two totally different fruits. Can you dig it.

More on the tale of MOR:
According to most reports, the Masters had split into two factions
long before the split/regrouping. Tim Harrington and Vinnie Ludovico
were very serious about the musical aspects of the band, while Chris
Goss was interested in his ego and being famous (see addition of
Ginger Baker). Okay, that was partly my opinion. Side note: MOR's
new guitarist, Daneil Rey, used to play with Iggy Pop, and Delicious
Vinyl's release of "The Blue Garden" has and additional track on it.
I think Chris left the band in Chicago fully intending to regroup it
without Tim and Vinnie. But Chris and Tim *were* the Masters. MOR
without both Tim and Chris is like the Stones with only Kieth *or* Mick.
Fact is, Tim really started the band. The courts are currently
handling the rights/use/etc. of the name MOR, and Tim says he and his
newly-formed Bgymn will not record (and they've had plenty of
offers) until the whole sordid issue gets straightened out.
Personally, I was a little disappointed in the rise to fame of MOR
for a few reasons already:
1) MOR used to be *much* darker, heavy, and sinister.
2) DEF Jam got rid of MOR's old manager Steve Latham
3) New producer Rick Rubin got rid of Mr. Owl and all synthesizers
(synths were a trademark of the old MOR).
4) Liked the old BeatBox backbone rather than the plodding chops
Vinnie played
So, in the end, although, I'll still listen to MOR, I think I'm going
have higher hopes for the Bgymn. I like Chris's writing, but I
like Tim's playing. In general, I'm sad to see the whole thing turn out
this way, but if the world gets two good groups out of the whole thing, I
guess that's okay, too.

Taken from RS w/o permission...
From "Random Notes"
It was a match made somewhere between rock and roll heaven and the
pages of a Ralph Lauren ad. When the metal gods in MASTERS OF REALITY
needed to anchor their rhythm section, they turned to the patriarch of
power drummers, GINGER BAKER, a polo buddy of the group's manager. "I
think the problem with the band is that they've never really had a
drummer, ever," says Baker, who is currently touring with the Masters.
"They've used all sorts of thrash-and-bash heavy-metal drummers."
Baker, who banged out his niche in music history over twenty years ago
with CREAM, sees no problem with the age gap between him and the rest
of the band members. "We get on quite well," he says. "We play cards.
But I don't really like being on the road. I'd rather be home with my
wife and my animals."

I bought the Masters Of Reality cd this past weekend. I have to say
that they have a very solid, basic rock sound to them that is very
appealing to me. Brings back the '70's style of rock. A little
slower, a little grittier and a little harder hitting. As earlier
stated, not every song is heavy, but still very good music.

The Masters' new CD, titled "Sunrise on the Suffer Bus" I believe,
will be out in February. This is the new Masters of Reality, who
have now, somehow, according to the media, become "Ginger Baker's new
band."
Myself, I'm skeptical, since after listening to the Bgymn, I think
Tim Harrington (guitarist on first CD) was the driving force here.
But I can't pass up anything to do with MOR, so I'll have to give Chris
Goss and that Masters a shot.

So I'm driving down 495, and 'BCN starts crankin' this tune, drums
right out of Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," riffs mixing in a little
Omar and the Howlers blues and Alvinn Lee boogie, and then... the
voice... unmistakable Chris Goss, the Monotone Wonder, this *had* to
be the new Master's CD!. Quick detour into Emerald Square, battle
the Shining Time Station crowds to Tape World, hunt up up "Sunrise
on the Sufferbus" ($16, but I can't wait for Noteworthy for this)
and my day is made. After a few listens, I'll post a review.

Wow. 3 years since my last note on this topic. Well, as Monty
Python says, this topic "is not dead yet."
Tim Harrington, guitarist extraordinaire of Masters Of Reality
(first CD) and Bgymn currently has two recording contracts.
One is a "Delicious Vinyl" CD due this summer called "Shinola."
But the important one is coming out just now on Triple XXX Records
(early Jane's addiction label)... "Master Frequency and His Deepness."
This record is *purportedly* (hopefully, please, please, please) a
throwback to the original Masters of Reality, which, if you read my
earlier notes, was a very different band than the one that made their
first national release. Back when I was seeing them in Syracuse, they
were a duo with a drum machine, then a trio with a drum machine. I
know, you say "that's not heavy metal" but it WAS! Major.
Anyway, I've got to go find this CD soon!
