Well, the Grammy awards decided to catch up with the rest of the world, and this year added a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal category to their award ceremonies. Of the five nominees, I remember 4 of them: The good news: Metallica is nominated! Also AC/DC and Jane's Addiction. The mediocre news: Jethro Tull was nominated. The bad news: Such quality albums as Guns and Roses and Queensryche were ignored. cat

429.1 | Metallica QUITS due to popularity... | MARKER::BUCKLEY | I'm back in the saddle again! | Fri Jan 13 1989 12:14 | 13 |
Yes, I was happy to see HM being recognized by the industry (finally!), but also was quick to notice the absence of a Queensryche nomination. I get the feeling that the nominations are influenced by record sales, for which Queensryche has not done well with, floundering around the 160s on Billboards chart for a while now. I hope Metallica wins. AC/DC is great, but at least they get video/air play. Metallica wows em all without either! Buck, who sez if *true* Metallica fans bummed when AJFA went platinum, they'll really bum out if they win the grammy! ;^)

I would LOVE for Metallica to win - the are extremely talented.. But not only that - it would open up doors for other serious *heavy* metal bands - not like Bon Jovi (nothing against them) but like Anthrax, etc. People would take these people more seriously, and as people with talent. IMO F.
429.3 | Is making the Top 200 a big deal? | CADSYS::DALTON | A mind is a terrible thing | Fri Jan 13 1989 14:55 | 14 |
> I get the feeling that the nominations are influenced by record sales, > for which Queensryche has not done well with, floundering around the > 160s on Billboards chart for a while now. I know this is off the topic, but does anyone have a good feeling for how many albums have to be sold to make it in the top 200? (i.e. how long would O:M have to stay in this position to go gold (500,000 sold, I think)?) It doesn't make a lot of difference to me if Ryche's albums go MULTIplatinum but it'd be nice to see a band with their level of quality/integrity get some recoginition in the form of sales. 429.4 | I think... | COORS::G_HOUSE | They call me 'Blood Sucking Vermin' | Fri Jan 13 1989 15:02 | 5 |
I believe it's a percentage of the market, not total sales (in dollars) that determines placement in the charts, therefore there wouldn't necessarily be a relationship between the total sold and the position. gh
429.5 | its *very* complicated | HAZEL::STARR | Like a fool, fell in love with you... | Fri Jan 13 1989 15:26 | 19 |
> I believe it's a percentage of the market, not total sales (in dollars) > that determines placement in the charts, Nawww, it's not even that easy. In fact, the method of determining chart position is very confusing, and is not publicly known. There is some sort of formula, but Ihave no idea what it is. I know it does take into account such things as radio airplay, sales, and jukebox income, among other things. And the equation does not stay constant either - the higher on the charts you go, the more the #'s rely on sales info and less on airplay. In other words, you can get to about #50 on just airplay. But if you want to move up into the Top 20, you had better start selling records! (Yes, there are records that get a lot of airplay but don't sell. Especially by older bands, such as the Stones and The Who, or 'cool' artists like Lou Reed. Radio plays them to be 'in', but no one buys it.) cat
429.6 | Blows the calculation | CSC32::G_HOUSE | They call me 'Blood Sucking Vermin' | Fri Jan 13 1989 15:42 | 4 |

Re>.6 I think air-play goes back to how much $-ola is rained upon record stations...I admire bands like Metallica, QR etc. that gather impressive followings without the big promo bucks............... I think the "Crammies" are fixed anyway... Watch "Jethro Tull" take it..Murphy's Law!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EARL (_}===# who believes in equity...Who believes in equity???
429.8 | Seems pretty straightforward to me. | SYSENG::MCLAUGHLIN | Mon Jan 16 1989 15:18 | 21
I question how much air-play has to do with being on the charts. If that were the case, then Zeppelin would be on the charts constantly and bands like Metallica and Anthrax wouldn't have a chance. But that is not the case. I believe that being on the charts is very reflective of album sales. Bands like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard stay high in the charts because their sales are high over a long period of time, whereas Metallica burst onto the charts because of the anticipation of the new release, but have been slowly fading. With Anthrax, all the loyal fans go out and buy the new release right away, so they debut fairly high on the charts for that month, but after that initial wave, the sales drop and therefore they may be on the charts for only two weeks or so. If you read the small print at the bottom of the Rolling Stone charts, it says they are based on a telephone survey of rock oriented record stores, nationwide. Since Def Leppard have sold 8 million copies of Hysteria, it's easy to see why they have been on the charts for 70 weeks now. SM

Someone told me that Metallica was going to PERFORM at the Grammies. I don't think the world is ready for this. And I'm slightly ticked because Metallica/Queensryche were going to be here in Greenville, SC on the 27th but they cancelled in order to be Grammybears. I guess us Dixiemetalheads will have to sacrafice this show in the name of Heavy Metal !!! Scary

Instead of starting an entirely new topic, I thought I would just add to this one seeing as how they are both awards shows. Cross your fingers and hope that it'll be better at the Grammies. Were the AMA's done live or something?? You would think that if it were taped they would've corrected New Edition when they screwed up VH's album. Did any of you catch the part where Michael Jackson asked Eddie Murphy to raise the microphone?? I was listening to KISS 108 about 20 minutes before I saw it on TV and Eddie started to do it then said to himself (or maybe even aloud) "What does he think I am?!" Tigger~~~

THAT was the other thing that annoyed me. Steven Adler is the reason I WATCH G-n-R!!!! And it was some old coot on drums instead of him!!! Did anyone else think that Axl sounded...well...bad? Patience is a good song, but I think they should've done something a little harder since Patience (IMO) sounds better on vinyl. hahahahaha!! You gotta love it!!! 429.24 | Wot, no queesryche? | MARKER::BUCKLEY | Mr. Big! | Tue Jan 31 1989 09:17 | 16 |
Well, my guess was that G n R went on late cuz Steve Alder (for some reason) couldn't make it, cuz they were pushed back in performing time. Also, it seemed to me they did patience cuz it was an easy song that drummer could follow. He looked like he didn't know it, as Duff kept giving him cues. They were definitely rushed, as Axl tried to thank the drummer who sat in they killed his mic and went on to the next thing, you could tell he was pissed. All in all I think the AMA was kinda bogus, although I think that the country music awards were all right on. Reba and Randy really deserved those awards. Buck

429.30 | You should all KNOW better than to expect anything from these awards shows | CSC32::G_HOUSE | The world needs guts | Tue Jan 31 1989 11:17 | 17 |
Just a wag, but MJ wasn't the first one to thank God when receiving his award. The first I saw was Whitney Houston, but there might have been others before that, 'cause I had to work late and didn't see the start of the show (and went off in another room to practice my guitar for most of it after GnR played). Why do we get so upset about their choice of bands/records for a catagory? It should be a given that they are NOT going to recognize a lot of excellent artists simply because they don't fit the mainstream idiom. IMO Am. Music Awards are the most commercial and bogus of the bunch, but they are ALL geared toward mainstream commercial stuff. I believe that the only reason the Grammys are giving any attention to a group like Metallica is because they've simply sold *so many* records that they couldn't be ignored (I could be wrong, this is of course, just my opinion). gh

Well said Greg. That is the reason I no longer watch any of the award shows period. Its not worth getting upset about. Oh, I dunno. Remember the arguement last year when Tull won over Metallica? Everyone thought it was because of Tulls' past work, not their current one, and said it should be based only on the work nominated. I think that, taken one on one, "Cult of Personality" is a better song than "Love In An Elevator", so I have no problems with LC winning over Aerosmith this time around. alan

Well, I think that they are about even, lyric-wise. 'COP' has better lyrics, but 'LIAE' lyrics are pretty clever. But musically, I gotta go with 'COP', because they seem to play with fire (although I know you don't really liek the solo). Ah well, to each his own.... You should've seen 'em on this tour Coop, Fackin' spectacular (imo)!! I know I do feel they shouldn't be made to perform a slow song. After all if the grammies nominate them for their albums, they should be able to play any selection on the album.

She said it looked like Lar's head was going to come off and that he was playing like he had forgotten to go to the bathroom before the song. Then she said, 'well, now that the headbangers ball is over, let's do the award for best heavy metal performance..." Thought she was kinna snide myself. The performance of 'Enter Sandman' was okay, alittle rough though... I really loved when Lars basically told everyone in the industry to f.o. Especially funny was his line, 'I like to thank all the radio stations and MTV for making this all possible....NOT!" He closed with thanking all the Metallica fans for supporting them over the last 10 years and saying that you can be true to your music and still be successful. Also, Chris, Metallica's new video is premiering on eMpTyV this afternoon at 5:30 PM. Set your VCR. BJ

> Not totally true. Had their album been done by anyone but them It would > be praised. It is a good album, just not something totally expected > from ones such as Metallica. I don't think it would have been *praised*, and I certainly don't think it would have gotten the mass airplay and marketing push that it has. It's a *good* album, but not a *great* album, that's the problem. So why do they have RR present an award for something he doesn't want to do? I also liked how Michael Bolton "forgot" to thank Percy Sledge for writing the song that MB milked for the grammy. What sort of drugs was the guy on who wrote Unforgetable? He went on in the most obtuse/bizarre fashion. > Alternative album, vocal or instrumental: ``Star,'' Belly; ``In Utero,'' > Nirvana; ``Automatic For The People,'' R.E.M.; ``Siamese Dream, '' Smashing Pumpkins; ``Zooropa,'' U2. REM and U2 are alternative??? They seem pretty mainstream nowadays to me..... > R&B performance, duo or group with vocal: ``Let It Snow,'' Boyz II Men; > ``Sunday Morning,'' Earth, Wind & Fire; ``Give It Up, Turn It Loose,'' > En Vogue; ``No Ordinary Love,'' Sade; ``Anniversary,'' Tony!Toni!Tone! This kills me... since when is Sade a duo or group??? > Instrumental arrangement accompanying vocals (artist's name in parentheses): > ``When I Fall In Love,'' Jeremy Lubbock (Celine Dion and Clive Griffin); > ``I Have Nothing,'' David Foster and Jeremy Lubbock (Whitney Houston); > ``Santa's Comin' To Town,'' Gary Hines (The Sounds of Blackness); ``Luck Be > A Lady,'' Jeremy Lubbock (Barbra Streisand); ``Some Enchanted Evening,'' > Johnny Mandel and David Foster (Barbra Streisand). I know the chances were slim, but I really think that John Paul Jones (ex-Zep) deserves a nomination for this work on REM's "Automatic With The People". Listen to the string arragements on there, it's fabulous! > Engineer award (artist's name in parentheses): ``janet.,'' Steve Hodge and > Dave Rideau (Janet Jackson); ``Lam Toro,'' Cesar Sogbe and Joe Galdo (Baaba > Maal); ``Race Against The Machine,'' Andy Wallace, Stan Katayama and G.G. > Garth (Race Against the Machine); ``Wes Bound,'' Don Murray (Lee Ritenour); > ``Ten Summoner's Tales,'' Hugh Padgham (Sting). One of the awards shows (not sure which one) is presenting Whitney Houston with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Gack. She's only been around for 10 years or so! Not to mention that despite the fact that I like her voice and her music, I find her personality incredibly annoying. And where's Bon Jovi on that list?! ;) ;) JJ

Anybody hear the "Howard Stern" coverage of the Grammies? I love this guy who makes an ass/pain of himself with pointed questions like this one to Roy Rodgers: "Roy, I found a rubber glove in my roast beef sandwhich. Doesn't that suck?" I'm sure I'm not the only who finds absolutely no value or talent in anything related to Howard Stern and yet who feels compelled to listen when I happen by it on the radio. db
