425.7 | before their time? | GAO::DKEATING | Shake Your Money Maker | Thu Jan 12 1989 12:32 | 21 |
| The original Skid Row was an Irish rock band during the late
sixties early seventies. I have one of their albums called
48 hours(that's how long it took to record!!!). The line up was
Gary Moore...lead guitar.
Brendan 'the Brush' Sheils...bass guitar
Nollaig(Noel) Bridgeman...drums(accordian on one track)
Nollaig and 'The Brush' hail from Dublin and Gary is from Belfast.
They did some UK and American tours but never made it big. They
claim 'rip-off' in thier contracts and management dealings. They
eventually disbanded and never really made much money out of it.
Useless trivia...Brush Sheils thought Phil Lynott how to play bass.
They grew up together in Dublin...and Brush admits now that the
only reason he *volunteered* for the job was to get Phillo 'off
his back'...he still smiles when he thinks how Phil made it big
some years later with Lizzy and how they themselves went down the
tubes. He figures that Phil was a bigger hit with the girls ;-)

Youth Gone Wild
Big Guns
Sweet Little Sister
Low point(s):

I thought Skid Row sounded pretty good when they opened for
Bon Jovi in Worcester ... his between-song banter left alot
to be desired, but his voice seemed to be fairly strong, and
he didn't seem to run out of breath or crack, etc.
I mean, they definitely sound better in the studio ... but
compared to some bands I've seen live they're good.

I saw their performance at Moscow Music Peace Festival and didn't think
that it was as bad as everyone seemed to say. I thought that
MotleySlimes' way lame performance was far less entertaining.
I do, however, agree that Sabastian has a vocabulary that couldn't
possibly consist of more then about 30 words, with about 8 of them
being "f*ck". I don't think that the overuse of one particular term is

| Isn't it funny how we change our tunes? I thought the same as most of
you when I first heard of them. Skid Row? Here comes another
Cinderella... But, even after passing them by on the radio a few
times, I have to admit that I've really gotten into them.
I bought the album. They aren't typical metal. They're harder and
Sebastian has a really cool voice. It's not Iron Maiden and it's not
Led Zeppelin, so it's cool, and strong.
The best tunes (so far) are 18, Youth Gone, and I Remember. I'm really
into I Remember. It's harder than most "ballads", like that pathetic
display by Warrant. I hate them. It's a good strong tune.
The writing on the rest of the album is kind of weak. But it's their
first album, and when they mature, they'll have some good potential.

Kerrang!: What, then, of the reports that Bon Jovi started a fight
with you backstage on the second from last show on the US tour? The
smile drops like a glass to the floor.
"Oh, wow, man... I don't know if I should comment on that," sebastian
says, then abruptly changes his mind, and clearing his throat, gives it
to me like this:
"What really happened was it was the end of the tour and the road-crew
decided it was a gag night, right? Maybe we took our little gag too
far, I don't know.
"I mean we did the same thing at the beginning of the tour and there
was no comeback from his end or anything.
"I was grabbed just as I was about to go onstage. Somebody poured a
gallon of freezing cold ice-milk over me. But the intro tape was
rolling and I just had to go on out there covered in all this shit....
"So I go out there - big gag - and when I get to the mike I go into
this rant against Jon. Like, come on up here p*ssy and get a piece of
me, motherf*cker! And all this sh*t. But see, he's my friend and it's
like that's our sense of humour, you know?
"But I guess in front of 20,000 people that maybe don't get the joke,
it looked kinda heavy," he shakes his head. "I mean, I watched the
tape back and it came over really f*cking harsh, man. It was like a
riot was gonna start.
"But, you know, this is my first tour. I don't know all the rules to
these games yet. Then it turned out that Jon didn't know anything
about what his roadcrew had done to me. And he got p*ssed off and when
I came of stage we had a fight....."
The words trail off into a whisper.

Skid Row/Vain Hammersmith Odeon.
When America sets out to court us with *the* killer rock band, we can
only stand back, gulp hard and bite the bullet. And GB's love affair
with Skid Row is easily justified, infinitely fulfilling and just a
little bit naughty. When they do it this well, who needs a one night
stand?
Not Vain. They're well intent on sliding permanently into our hearts
and veins (!), twisting us round their grimy little fingers until we
can't say no to Davy any longer. And who would deny this man? Not the
Odeon; they would unpick his trouser seams with their teeth and then
put 'em back together again with a blunt matchstick if he asked them
to.
Davy Vain likes to talk dirty to his people. there's the shower rap
preceding "Who's watching you" that'll either make you bolt the door or
just swing it wiiiiide open. And as the lyrics suddenly become "Who's
f*cking you" you suddenly start to wonder if Davy *has* a bathroom
door, let alone a bolt!!!
But for all their bluster, Vain did lack that little spark of real
excitement, hunger and attack; the baying of real want. They were not
everything I had hoped in the flesh, but their drug is firmly implanted
regardless; I want more.
Skid Row already have the world eating out of their sweaty hands. They
demand your very souls to tease, torture and make their own. they take
likes for the living.
"Makin a mess" turns the dripping tap on, and the first few rows should
be claiming danger money as Sebastian Bach swings his mike crazily
around above their heads. For all Seb's girlie visage, he ain't no
wimp. Those looong legs ricoshet up and down like crazed pistons, one
bare knee pushing in and out of the leather. He crashes in to Rachel
Bolan and they collapse into the speakers, bass howling. It doesn't
matter one solitary f*ck!
"Big Guns" and "Piece of me" start off the first cracks in the walls,
their heady blanket of noise crashing down with no respect. Only
Sebastian's long raps give the brain some respite - and he *is* funny,
not the untouchable chiselled God you might expect.
"18 an life" has Dave "the Snake" Sabo pulsating like a motorized
Chivers jelly, while "Can't stand the heartache" just leaves the jaw
scraping on the sticky carpet, eyes stretched wide and the ears well
and truly bashed. Yet all pales when they sing "I remember you", a
song to cry to, laugh to...love to. Look past the Seb-lust and read
the lyrics. "Sweet little sister" follows the anti Milli Vanilli rap,
then "Here I am" ushers them off stage; high and mighty.
UPROAR!!! Then Skid Row, Vain, Lemmy and a lot of Champagne troop back
on and make sure the "Train kept a rollin'". With Rob Affuso on lead
tambourine they couldn't go wrong, and for the first time Seb looks
slightly unnerved as Lemmy puts a gently strangulating arm around his
neck and squeezes. Tight!
Then we get Maiden's Steve Harris and Nicko McDrummer up for a steaming
rendition of "Wrathchild", while Rob, Rachel and Vain hover behind the
drumkit bopping along.
And to leave us? "Youth Gone Wild". They were; NO competition. Come
back soon!!!

I don't see that it matters whether is joke is in bad taste or not.
What does matter is who it is communicated to. Whether he likes it or
not, SB is now in a position of responsibility. Skid Row appeal to
mature noters (:^}) and impressionable kids alike (this applies to any
successful rock band or public figure). The man is welcome to any
bigoted views he wants, but if he is going to flaunt those views on
stage, or worse on national television, he is effectively encouraging
other people to adopt those views. His action could lead to one more
gay being beaten up, knifed, whatever. I may be a bleeding heart, but I
consider this to be unacceptable.

MTV. It was pretty interesting.... SB is swearing something or
other then he gets beaned with the bottle.... he swears a few
more things and starts pointing at someone asking if it was he/she/it
who through the bottle.... SR starts playing a song and SB throws
a bottle down into the crowd.... he then jumps feet first into the
crowd.... band is still playing.... security goes after him and
they get him back on stage.
MTV bleeped the swears so it was confusing following what he was
saying when he got back on stage. Something about the person could
meet him after the show by SR's tour bus and the two could have it
out then.
Good footage... I give it a thumbs up.

I haven't seen that clip yet. I did see a clip of him when

(that wasn't meant as a slam) If you didn't know who he was,
you'd never guess he's the lead singer behind a hot metal band.

The following statement was issued by McGhee Entertainment:
"Sebastian Bach and Skid Row are deeply disturbed over the
incident that happened in Springfield, Massachusetts.
"The situation developed after Sebastian was struck on the head
by a glass bottle projected from the audience. The blow caused
a laceration which resulted in six stitches. In the mle a
young woman, Elizabeth Myars was injured.
"Sebastian and the band want to express their concern for Miss
Myars, and sincerely regret that this incident ever happened
at one of their shows and want to see that it wont happen again."
SB is currently out on $2000 cash bail and there is not date
set for the trial....it's possisble that an out of court
settlement could be made.

Looks like Seb is well up to his ears in the deep brown sticky stuff...
Copied from Kerrang! without permission:
Startling new evidence has come to light of the incident in
Springfield, MAssachusetts that led to Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach
being charged with "assault, assault and battery, and mayhem".
MTV News in the US and Europe has broadcast a video recording, mad
illicitly by a member of the audience, which shows the following series
of events:
o the singer being hit, but apparently not hurt, by a plastic glass
thrown from a person close to the stage;
o Back pointing to a person directly in front of him and shouting,
"Was that you? Was that YOU?";
o Bach introducing the next song (Piece of Me) apparently challenging
his adversery to "come up on stage and get a piece..of..me.." as
the band launches into the song;
o the singer throwing something containing liquid, picked off the
drum riser, into the mle at the front;
o retrieving a plastic cup of the stage at his feet, motioning to
those at his feet to part, then throwing this into the crowd too;
o finally, the very clearly agitated singer jumping feet first from
the lip of the stage into what appears to be the third row and
disappearing from view. The band play on while a chain of roadies
struggle to pull Bach out...
Bach is due back in court to face charges on MAy 15. Skid Row's
management company McGhee Entertainment has declined to make any
further comment.

RIP Magazine had a two part interview with Sebastian of Skid
Row.
SEB: ...Everybody goes, "How do you get your hair looking
like that?" I don't WASH the sh*t! There's no effort
put into the looks. I want to dye my hair blue, just
so I don't have blond hair anymore. Every singer has
got blond hair. It kinds of bums me out.
RIP: Is it natural then?
SEB: No, it's fake. I dye it. I like fake hair.

Seb and ??(the dude with the nose ring,,,his name escapes me)
presented an award. And Skid Row was nominated for best new

were to only "metal" band nominated. But Aerosmith and the Stones
ran away the awards. Tyler actually looked good! Not that anyone

There is one slight issue that I KNOW you all will want to comment

It's basically a song busting on groupies but it very descriptive.
Something like:I puke,I stink...B^tch go get me a drink
Who do you think is paying for the room?
You not my wife, your not a tattoo
are you finding it hard to swallow my attitude?
No need to whisper
No need to shout

I picked up "Slave to the Grind" last night on the way home, and
gave it somewhat of a first listen ... I was tired, and I fell
asleep before the last 2 songs.
It's extremely heavy ... much heavier than the first one. But
so far I don't know if I like it any better or not ... it'll be
another listen or 2 before I can really make a decision.

Yes. There is the R rated version, and the "clean" version... On an
MTV blurb, speaking on the two version of the album, the guitarist who
was sitting with Sebastian, said something to the effect of that the
PMRC is afraid of the R version, because thats all the stuff their

Did the Big Managers(record and road)get together and say...
"Hey,Skid Row---Make an album in the same style as AFD and maybe we
can get you on a MAJOR tour with them when they finally hit the road
again".
JMHO but I think this might have happened..SR had at least a year and
ahalf to do it.
Both bands basicly draw the same crowd..

What probably happened is what happens with alot of bands. Its there
first album, and the producer calls all the shots. Decides what to
release and how the music will even sound.. They might have been a
cool band from the beginning, but didn't have the authority to speak up
when the record company was shooting for the puberty age group. Then
they made tons of money, and they are calling the shots!!

| I got also SttG and while at the first listening I was not very impressed,
I quite enjoyed a second higher volum listening (on headphones this time).
It is for sure a heavy album close to old Aerosmith style (good if you like
Aerosmith's "Rocks"). I prefer actually SR to G&R (Bach is a better singer).
The two ballads on the album (especially Quicksand Jesus) are very good.
Act of Riot (??) is an excellent hard kicker, a little bit like a heavy weight
Ramones. The overall recording quality is not the best. I was much less
impressed by SR's first album. This one is better and my only objection is that
it sounds very influenced by Aerosmith (but isn't this a good influence ?).

but it rocks more and it shows better integration of the band. Kurt Vanderhoof

are the best rockers from the album for me (the title track is also
fine). GTFO and "Creep show" are for me musically quite weak. And again
the recording and sound mixing seem quite bad (high frequency,
distortion and bad left/right balancing on few songs). Still a good
album.

He has a son but didn't say how old. I'm guessing walking
age just by the way he was talking about him. He was saying
how he used to have to sneak him in the back door at his
concerts to maintain his "image" of a metal rocker but
decided to hell with it and now just brings him in with
him wherever he is.
He also talked a bit about the incident in Springfield. How
stupid he realized it was but that they had been on the

never let anything like that happen again.

| PRETTY BAD BOYS
WILL SKID ROW FINALLY GET SOME RESPECT, HEAVY-METAL STYLE?
Taken without permission from Rolling Stone Magazine, Issue 613,
September 19, 1991.
"If you think, you *skink*."
That, according to lead singer Sebastian Bach, is the motto that Skid
Row tries to live by. But even though heavy metal is not a genre noted
for heavy thinking, there's no shortage of interesting information one
can learn from the boys in this band. In fact, Skid Row's ferociously
powerful opening sets for Guns n' Roses this summer were veritable
heavy metal seminars, full of useful information for the young,
headbanging mind.
Consider, for example, some of the hard-rockin' tidbits one could have
picked up during the band's show at the Pacific Amphitheater, in Cost
Mesa, California, in late July:
There, Bach explained that the song "Psycho Love," from *Slave to the
Grind,* the group's latest album, is about "something I f(ckin' love to
do - tying people up and saying, "Tie me up, tie me down, whip me, suck
me, f(ck me!" Of course, the man who actually wrote the song, bassist
and chief songwriter Rachel Bolan - the guy with the girl's name and
the nose chain, for those not in the know - offers a slightly different
interpretation. For him, the song is about a prostitute who likes to
kill her johns before servicing them.
Bach - a man who looks and sounds as though he has been genetically
engineered to be the ultimate hard-rock frontman - is also very
concerned about foreign affairs. He made no bones about his hatred of
"f(ckin' war," in the abstract, and "Saddam F(ckin' Insane," in
particular. But world affairs wasn't the only subject he explored;
during an audience-participation segment, there was also a little
applied math, as Bach led the crowd in a chant of "One, two, f(ck you!"
You could also come to understand that Skid Row is a group that's not
above criticism, both from itself and others. In introducing the
controversial groupie-bashing number "Get the F(ck Out," Bach said:
"This is a song about someone like me. Someone who comes over to your
house and ends up f(ckin' puking on your carpet and pissing on your
dog. You know the type: Instant *A((hole* - just add alcohol." The
song itself is an over-the-top piece of insensitive songwriting,
featuring the deathless lines "Well I puke, I stink, bitch get me a
drink/'Cause I'm paying for the room/I ain't buying you
breakfast/So keep you mouth busy and wrap your lips/All around my
attitude."
And should you want to know more about their attitude, you can gain
valuable insight into the manner in which the members of Skid Row like
to spend their free time. Throughout the show, Bach warmly
acknowledged those in the audience who were smoking "some
motherf(cking' nature." And as he left the stage, he said, "I'm gonna
go backstage, light up a big *f(ckin'* doobie, drink a Jack and Coke
and watch some *f(ckin'* Guns n' Roses." And damned if that is not
*exactly* what he did.
What ultimately separates Skid Row from some of the competition - the
worthless hair bands and other hard-rock poseurs - is that this is a
band that's exactly what is seems to be. In a world where other
rockers rush off-stage to an emergency board meeting with their
accountants, Skid Row is the real deal, a band of surprisingly sweet
and sincere twentysomething guys who could hardly be happier with their
chosen line of work.
"I've always said that the only difference between us and our fans is
the stage," says guitarist Dave "the Snake" Sabo.
"We're pretty much the same punks that we always were," adds Bolan.
So if someone in Skid Row says that he's going to get f(cked up
backstage, by all means believe him. Not that anyone in the band wants
to encourage you to do the same. "I only advocate drug use for me and
my band, *dude*," says Back, before breaking into his howling laugh and
offering one of his trademark violent hand slaps.
Call is definitive proof of the Theory of Hard-Rock Relativity: While
the members of Guns n' Roses were busy making all the headlines this
summer, their similarly rowdy tour mates in Skid Row were coming off
like angels by comparison. And they were selling lots of albums along
the way - more than 1.5 million copies of *Slave to the Grind* thus
far.
With its new album, Skid Row has become a band of hard-rock heroes
worth taking seriously. Heavier and more ambitious that the band's
quadruple-platinum 1989 debut effort, *Skid Row*, the new album entered
the *Billboard* chart at Number One, a remarkable feat for a solid
piece of grunge rock that makes few concessions to the
power-ballad-hungry marketplace of the early Nineties. The album
confidently establishes Skid Row as more than just another slick metal
act like Poison or Winger - a false impression that the more
user-friendly debut may have helped to create. The second time around,
Skid Row has served up a wonderfully rude announcement that this is a
band that's in it for the long run.
"For us, it's not just that we want to sell another 4 million records,"
says Sabo. "What we want to do is stay around awhile, like Aerosmith.
We'd trade some sales for some respect, because we're serious about the
music."
"We'd like to be like one of the incredibly cool bands we grew up on,
whether it was the Sex Pistols or Kiss," says Bolan. "We'd like to be
great, you know?"
That's a mighty tall order for this young New Jersey-based group.
Until now, the band has received less attention for its music that for
the various people it has managed to piss off. That list includes
early benefactor and mentor Jon Bon Jovi, whom Bach publicly took to
task for exploiting Skid Row when he took a large portion of their
publishing proceeds in exchange for his early support. It also
includes assorted nonhomophobes, whom Bach outraged by donning a
T-shirt bearing the slogan AIDS KILLS FAGS DEAD. And perhaps most
seriously, it includes assorted law-enforcement officials who've
charged Bach on numerous occasions with onstage obscenity, and who
arrested him after a Springfield, Massachusetts, concert during which
he tried to throw a bottle back at an audience member who'd struck him
and instead hit an innocent bystander. Currently, Bach - or Bas, as he
is often called - is on probation for three years, and his lawyers have
come to a substantial settlement with the woman he accidentally hit.
"I basically gave them everything I'd earned," he says with a shrug.
It is almost miraculous, then, that with *Slave to the Grind* and the
opening stint for Guns n' Roses, Skid Row is showing genuine signs of
growth, heavy-metal style. Whether it's because of all the heat the
band has taken, or in spite of it, Skid Row actually seems to be on the
verge of turning into the great hard-rock band its members so
desperately want to be. Theirs may be a goofy sort of greatness, but
it is a greatness nonetheless.
Two days after the Cost Mesa concert, the members of Skid Row are in
Chicago. The last time they were here, they discovered that their show
with Guns n' Roses had been canceled in the wake of the much-publicized
riot in St. Louis. This time around, Skid Row is shooting some
performance footage for a video of "Slave to the Grind," the second
single from the new album. Mostly, however, the group and its
dedicated manager Scott McGhee - a former professional-football player
and the brother of Bon Jovi manager Doc McGhee - are hanging out in a
huge ware house down the road from the meeting hall of Local 100 of the
Beef Boners and Sausage Makers Union, awaiting instructions from a
local video-production company.
In between shots, the band and McGhee amuse themselves by engaging in a
charming little exercise called Do You Mind If I Do *This* All Day
Long? The game is quite simple: One band member repeatedly violates
the personal space of another in some horrifically annoying way, all
the time chanting the phrase "Do you mind if I do *this* all day long?"
A particularly popular violation is the Ear F(ck, in which a finger is
thrust into the aural cavity of the victim. "Anything to pass some
f(ckin' time dude," says guitarist Scotti Hill.
There are other activities, like that beloved band pastime of ragging
on the drummer, which Rob Affuso handles with impressive grace. Then
there's Stump the Manager, in which Sabo tries to catch McGhee on
toughies like "What's our royalty rate in Malaysia?" Finally, there's
that old favorite of come up with vivid nicknames of the band members'
"old ladies." One Skidster who requests - nay, *demands* - anonymity
repeatedly refers to his own beloved as the Harvester of Sorrow, after
a Metallica song.
The entire entourage rallies when bassist Bolan is filmed playing
inside a metal cage that's being flown around the warehouse by a large
hydraulic lift. Bach, a twenty-three-year-old who is very much in
tough with the child within, looks at his band mate playing behind bars
and shouts: "This is so cool! This is so *f(ckin'* cool. Let me in
there." Later, the thrill is gone, and he entertains himself by
smoking a few in a nearby Winnebago, searching local erotic shops for a
pair of rubber pants like the ones he left in California, and ripping
the head off a Vanilla Ice doll.
As the shoot drags on, there is also plenty of time for sober - or
mostly sober - reflection on where Skid Row comes from and where it
wants to go.
Founding members Bolan and Sabo come from the Jersey Shore; Snake, in
fact, grew up just blocks away from Jon Bon Jovi, in Sayreville. The
two met sometime in the mid-Eighties, at the Garden State Music Store,
where Sabo was punching a clock. Snake remembers Rachel coming into
the store to buy strings: "He used to come in all the time, and he
just had this *aura* or whatever you call it, about him."
Instead of telling Bolan to take his aura and get the hell out of the
store, the friendly Sabo developed a rapport with the bassist. At the
time, Rachel - whose first name is real, his parents' tribute to a
Portuguese grandfather of the same name, and whose last name is his own
tribute to Marc Bolan of T. Rex, and early hero - was playing with a
club band called Godsend, which also featured Scotti Hill. Bolan had
been writing songs on his own for a year, but in Snake - so nicknamed
in part for the Frank Zappa film *Baby Snakes*, as well as some
best-unmentioned bodily hair irregularities - he found a collaborator.
"Something just snapped in my head," says Bolan. "It was like 'Wow, we
can actually do something *good* together.' And from there, you know,
it was basically a matter of finding the right other people to do it
with."
The first version of the group came together in 1986. "We thought up
the name when we were driving down the Garden State Parkway," Sabo
recalls. "We were on our way to practice, trying to think of what to
call ourselves, and we saw tire marks on the road from an accident. I
think I said, 'Skid Marks,' and Rachel said, 'Skid Row.'" That name
was better than the others they considered. "For a while we thought of
calling ourselves Darkness, after an Aerosmith song," says Sabo. "can
you imagine calling ourselves Darkness? Why not just go all the way
and call ourselves *Dorkness*, you know?"
Within a matter of weeks, they recruited Hill and Affuso. Guitarist
Hill had moved from Middletown, New York, to play on the Jersey Shore
scene, while Affuso was a New York University graduate from Wallkill,
New York, who'd played drums with a Rush tribute band called Minstrel.
Finding the right singer proved more of a struggle. The person
initially enlisted for the job wasn't as committed as the band wanted.
But the need for a replacement took on new urgency when - through the
intervention of Jon Bon Jovi - heavyweight metal manager Doc McGhee
expressed an interest in working with the group but insisted they
needed a different vocalist. The band members spent nearly eight
months running its own seemingly fruitless star search. They already
had most of the songs that would end up on their debut album, including
such state-of-the-charts hard rockers as "Youth Gone Wild," "18 and
Life" and the pull-out-your-lighter ladies' choice "I Remember You."
"We had the songs," says Bolan. "We just needed somebody who could
sing them." In their frustration, they even formed an informal group
to blow off steam by playing Ramones and Sex Pistols covers. They
called the band This Blows.
And then came Sebastian.
Sebastian Bierk was born in the Bahamas. He grew up there, as well as
in Humboldt County, California, and Peterborough, Ontario. There, he
was a self-described "straight-A bully" at an exclusive private school
also attended by Prince Andrew ("He was a f(cking a((hole." the singer
recalls fondly of the royal). Sebastian's father, David Bierk - an
accomplished painter and successful gallery founder who created the
*Slave to the Grind* cover - recalls that his song was "a pretty
normal, smart, creative, sensitive, sweet kid."
But around eighth grade, Bierk continues, "the rock * roll think *hit*
him, and it kind of took over. It wasn't like he wanted to do it. It
was like he *had* to do it." Bierk remembers telling his song that if
he wanted to be a professional musician, he should go to Juilliard to
study: "He told me, 'Dad, that's *not* the way it works'."
And so it was that at the age of fifteen, Sebastian - named after John
Sebastian, of the Lovin' Spoonful - moved on his own to Toronto. He
changed his name to Bach, he says, because Bierk rhymed with jerk and
because it had recently been the 300th birthday of Johann Sebastian
Bach. "I figured I could get free press every time he had a birthday,"
he says.
Taking advantage of the fact that, at six feet three, he looked older
than he actually was, Bach began sneaking into clubs and singing with
bands. Then, at a jam session following the wedding of a rock
photographer, Back was noticed by a guest, David Feld, who was an
acquaintance of Skid Row's (and who is now an A&R representative for
the band's label, Atlantic). Feld told the band about Bach. Soon,
tapes were exchanged, and a plane ticket was sent to bring Sebastian
from the Great White North to the Garden State.
After picking Bach up at the airport, the band headed to a seedy club
called Mingles, in South Amboy. "That night we got sh(t-faced and
decided to jam," Sabo recalls. "We had so much fun onstage together.
It was a mess, but it was great. Then on the way out, we walked up the
stairs and somebody called Bas 'faggot', so he just started swinging.
We'd just met the guy, and all of the sudden we're in our first
fistfight. It was like *instant* bonding."
In a band of equals, Bach soon became more equal. He is, as Sabo has
put it, both the beauty and the beast. These days, one more often sees
the beauty. Even within the competitive frontman category, Bach is
more than just another pretty face. He sings like a dream, and though
he only weights 145 pounds, he is capable of inflicting serious harm.
"He'd surprise you," says his bodyguard, Val Bichekas. "When the guy's
pissed, he's like a f(cking gladiator."
Of course, having such a strong frontman not only helps sell a group to
the public, it also can cause plenty of tension within the band.
Still, all the members of Skid Row insist they have no problem with
Sebastian's prominence. "Obviously, Bas is up front for a reason,"
says Sabo. "He's good at being up there. It's like he was born to be
there or something."
Once Bach was enlisted, the group formalized its deal with McGhee
Entertainment. As Bolan says, "I still remember when we were over at
Jon's talking with Doc, and he says, 'And when you're signed with me,'
and I'm looking at Snake, and he's freaking out 'cause it hit us that
this thing is *really* going to happen."
The band signed with Atlantic after finding a devoted fan in A&R man
Jason Flom. "They just blew me away," he recalls. "I felt like I was
having a religious experience," It wasn't long before lots of other
people shared Flom's feeling for Skid Row. But the band also had lots
of help along the way. "We're definitely aware that there was a large
element of luck in our story", says drummer Affuso. "We're good, but
there are a lot of good bands that never get a break."
Skid Row got plenty of breaks: Atlantic got behind the debut album and
confidently released a strong initial shipment of 150,000 copies. With
the support of Doc McGhee and Jon Bon Jovi, Skid Row was tapped for the
highly desirable gig of opening up for Bon Jovi on the *New Jersey*
tour, both here and abroad. MTV jumped on the band's first video, for
"Youth Gone Wild," and has supported the group ever since.
But with the good luck came the controversies. While the
bottle-throwing incident most directly threatened the future of Skid
Row, Bach's public criticism of Jon Bon Jovi had the potential for
being extremely explosive - especially since the members of the two
bands had been friends and their business affairs were being handled by
brothers under the same management umbrella.
In return for his early and obviously key support of the band in its
developmental stages, the business-savvy Bon Jovi got the lion's share
of the group's publishing income. (Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora,
who also participated in the profits, gave up his claim to the Skid Row
publishing money early one - a move that Snake describes as "very
classy".)
When Skid Row finally got off the road and took a look at its royalty
statements, Bach started talking to the press about the problem. Even
Sabo, the band member closest to Bon Jovi, says that Sebastian was not
out of line: "Listen, Bas has his own way of expressing himself, but
it wasn't like he was saying things the rest of us hadn't felt." Bo
Jovi himself sounded philosophical when asked about the tensions by RIP
magazine: "How many days in your life do you have to hear, 'You're
only there because Jon put you there'" How many times can you have
that beaten in your head? No matter who you are, you're gonna turn
around and say 'F(ck him.' It's only human nature."
Today, a state of *glasnost* exists between the camps. "Me and Jonny
have had some great times together," says Sabo. "So has Jonny and
everybody in the band, including Bas. But we hit a rough spot. A
*really* rough spot. But things are a lot better."
Not long ago, a deal was cut that in effect makes Bon Jovi the group's
copublisher. "We did the best we could in the situation," says Scott
McGhee. "And I think it worked out great."
A more common problem was how to follow up such a successful debut.
Veteran metal producer Michael Wagener, who was at the helm for the
first album, was again enlisted for *Slave to the Grind*. The band
members also decided to "have some fun," says Sabo. Instead of
recording in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where they made *Skid Row*, they
worked in two capitals of distraction, Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles.
"And we have an appetite for distraction," Bolan notes.
Of course, it all worked out fine. "I thought this album would enter
the charts at like *Number 100* not Number One," says Bach, who
remembers hearing the news that his band had knocked N.W.A out of the
top spot while en route to a gig at the Philadelphia Spectrum. "I
felt...strange," he says. "I felt like I was walking a f(ckin'
tightrope or something."
"Here we are in the land of the crossed arms," says Bolan, as he makes
his way through the backstage entrance of the Long Angles Forum.
The Harvester of Sorrow is present. So, too are Skid Row's other
significant others, a rather attractive bunch whom the boys in the band
actually seem altogether thrilled to see. The members of Skid Row seem
fully domesticated in this atmosphere, as befits a bunch of upwardly
mobile guys who've recently bought houses in New Jersey. Bach is
accompanied not only by his long time girlfriend Maria, but also by his
three-year-old son Paris, who was born on his father's twentieth
birthday and who existence only recently became publish knowledge.
Asked if such a revelation could hurt his image as an available
heavy-metal stud, the proud papa says, "Who the *f(ck* cares!"
The group is back in California for a series of shows that will bring
an end to the American leg of its tour with Guns n' Roses. The tour
has been a thrill, the band members say, not only because they've been
treated well by the audience, and by the Gunners, but also because it's
been, in the worlds of Bolan, "a blast to be out on the road with a
bunch of guys our own age."
Other than a sense of nervousness about facing what historically is a
hard-to-impress L.A. audience, the atmosphere backstage seems like some
wonderfully delayed adolescent dreamscape. Beautiful young women and
assorted industry types wander around freely, as do a couple of the
Gunner's pet dogs.
During the Forum shows, Billy Idol, Cher, Lenny Kravitz, Johnny Depp
and other dignitaries drop by to pay their respects. The two bands mix
things up in the Jam Room, with Bach joining some of the Gunners for
wonderfully loose workouts on "Whole Lotta Love" and "Suffragette
City."
Skid Row noshes in its dressing room and checks out the evening news
that's filled with details of the Moscow summit and Pee-wee Herman's
recent bust. Most of the band seems more interested in the latter
story, but Sabo watches as Dan Rather addresses the former.
"Apparently, it's a real power summit," Sabo says with a wide grin.
"Supposedly, Hulk Hogan is there." Across the hall, Bach is doing his
regular preshow vocal warmup, a ritual that finds him singing
everything from Seals and Crofts's "Summer Breeze" to Judas Priest's
"Beyond the Realms of Death."
Bach and the band are in peak form when they hit the stage. After the
Beastie Boys' "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)," a sort of
musical call to arms, blasts from the PA, Skid Row delivers and almost
punkish, no-frills set that concentrates on the prime rockers from
both albums, with "I Remember You" the only ballad in the bunch. At
times, Bach seems almost possessed by some hard-rock spirit, his eyes
taking on a *Village of the Damned* glaze. Before launching into the
crowd-pleasing anthem "18 and Life," Bas launches into some topical
commentary. "Did you hear about Pee-wee Herman?" he asks the cheering
crowd in the packed arena. "They caught him jerking off in this
theater. And they say rock & roll corrupts. I could jerk off in a
movie theater, and you people would f(ckin' *love* it, wouldn't you?"
Based on the reaction, he's apparently correct.
The emotional highlight of the Forum shows comes after the second
night, when Sebastian brings out Paris for one of the encores. The
chip off the hard-rock block - wearing a tiny Skid Row jacket - runs
straight for the mike. In the end, despite their fears, the members of
Skid Row are received by the Forum crowd like the headliners they soon
will be.
Later, Bach - still buzzed from the show and offering his hand slaps
from hell to various passerby - takes time in a bathroom near the Guns
n' Roses dressing area to chat. He's asked about the T-shirt he wore
that suggested the extermination of homosexuals. "People hand me
shirts all the time," he says. "I didn't realize then that anybody
gave a sh(t about what it says on my chest. Now I know. I'm sorry.
But the truth is that I *don't* understand homosexuality - I just don't
get it. But that's me. I don't f(ckin' hate anyone for what they do
at all."
As for the squabble with Bon Jovi, Bach says, "We've talked, and we
realize that if you want to punch someone out, you don't f(ckin' say it
to the press". He also expresses regret about the bottle incident.
"Listen, it made me think," he says, "because you hurt someone you love
- because I f(ckin' love anyone who listens to our music and enjoys it,
and apparently the girl was a fan of ours. I never want to hurt anyone
like that again. But when some a((hole throws a bottle at my head,
it's a different story."
And though he admits he got into a squabble as recently as two nights
before, and has trashed a dressing room since then, Bach says he's
trying to control his temper: "I've been told, 'If you get busted for
f(ckin' fighting one more time, anywhere in the United States, you go
directly to jail. You do not collect $2 million.' So f(ck that sh(t."
That's easier said than done. "See, I was always a bully," he says.
"Why? Because I'm *big*. Because it was *easy*." Asked if he thinks
he's burned too many bridges with his behavior, Bach says "I guess so,
but I really won't know until I try to cross back on them."
At times, it almost sounds like Bach is maturing, if not mellowing.
Lately, he's even made a concerted effort not to put down other musical
acts, succeeding except for the occasional Nelson crack - and this from
a man who used to expound, at great length, on his hatred for "New Kids
on My C(ck." "Well, I'm not trying to *mature*," he says. "I mean, I
didn't take as much drugs a few years ago as I do now, and that's the
truth motherf(cker. I don't try to do *anything* except for f(ckin'
singing. That's what I've figured out is the best part of what I do.
And I'm in this for twenty years - if I can do that I'll die a happy
man."
Bach even has an idea bout how to turn his frontman role into a family
business - an idea he shares with great reluctance. According to his
plan, he will secretly relinquish his job to Paris when he turns forty.
"I'll put my kid out front on the mike," he says. "That way people
will look at him and say, 'Hey, man, Sebastian f(cking worked out a
*lot* over the summer, *didn't* he?
"Not *that's* rock & roll," says Sebastian Bach, as he breaks out into
the biggest laugh of all.

SELF-DESCRIPTION: "I'm the worrier. It's tough to objective when
your talking about yourself, but I'm definitely the most level headed.
I can honestly say that, when it comes to people going in opposite
directions, I'm the guy who can bring it together. Who finds the common
ground. That is my stong point. The bad point is that I'm the worrier.
That's where the give and take comes in. I worry about what going to
happen tommorrow and Sebastian doesn't give a sh.t."

"No way can I believe it, man. Cause when I come home, I walk down
the street in my neighborhood, you know? And people don't know who I
am. I mean, I don't advertise it, either. I mean, I don't go around
wearing a Skid Row this and Skid Row that. If I goto the mall, I put my
hair in a ponytail or something. Sometimes when I'm home, I just get
so wrapped up in being home, I forget that there's people around that
know who I am, and I'll just go walking around not thinking about it
and somebody will freak out, you know? It's just really weird. But as
far everything that's happenedin the past couple years, it's amazing.
I sit back and look at all the stuff I've done and I'll the different

425.334 | The GLH concert review | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Now I'm down in it | Wed Feb 26 1992 13:04 | 131 |
| Allright! Having just attended a cool concert just a few short hours
ago, it's time for the Gregster to make his completely biased review of
the show! The timing of this is especially advantageous, since the
Frizkid, who also attended, has taken the day off and can't get his
propaganda in first to bias your little minds! ;^)
Ok, last night was the Skid Row / Soundgarden / Pantara show at
McNichols Arena (Big Mac, for you Colorado types). I'll review the
bands in the order they played:
First up was Pantara. Bottom line: They played reasonably well, but I
wasn't impressed. We got there about halfway through their set due to
long lines to get in the door.
I *was* impressed with a thrash band that would allow their sound to be
set up at a moderate volume level. It was much lower in volume then
either of the other two bands and I, for one, appreciated it more that
way.
We heard them play five or six songs and I like one of them real well,
one of them a little, and thought the rest sounded like uninspired
filler material. I sort of liked the guitar players sound, but it got
annoying real fast. I looked at the stage and figured out
why...RANDALL AMPS, I hate those things, they suck! The singer was
very strange looking. I swear he looked and acted like Marky Mark!
All he needed to do to complete the picture was drop his bands and show
off his underwear. What a geek...
His voice wasn't too bad for his material, but his shaved head looked
kinda outta place (is this like a Scott Ian cloning attempt or what?)
and his stupid stocking cap that he kept taking on and off looked even
worse. My advice? I didn't really mind the shaved head, but keep the
stocking cap for the cold weather outside, it doesn't make good stage
wear.
Next up was Soundgarden. Bottom line: Even though they were kind of
sloppy and had some out of place riffs and stuff, I still liked 'em.
Of course, I *might* have been the only Skid Row fan there that had
ever actually *heard* any of Soundgarden's material (other then
"Outshined").
I thought they had an interesting sound. The drummer was especially
talented, I really liked his style! The singers voice sounded kind of
fried, he couldn't seem to get much power behind the vocals and the
music suffered as a result. The bass player acted totally weird, I
couldn't get into his stage act at all.
I liked the guitarist's tone a lot, very fat and creamy. He did hit a
lot of what I considered "clam" notes and wasn't always in tune, but I
don't mind that kind of thing. Lets me know a real person is up there
playing. He didn't try to play stuff that he couldn't do either (more
on this later).
Kind of bugged me that they didn't have any of their amps visible
onstage, they were hidden behind a drop cloth (I suspect that they
don't cart a stadium "appearance" set of gear around, so they don't
keep it onstage. Now that's just from a curious musicians point of
view, I actually liked the streamlined stage setup without the clutter
of amps and stuff all around.
I think the guy was using the Peavey VTM series guitar heads, because
when their stuff was being torn down, a roadie wheeled out a rack with
three of four Peavey heads in it. I was a pretty good ways away and
couldn't see them good enough to tell exactly what they were. Noter
Jerry White told me a long time ago that those got a cool sound, but
I'd never heard one that did myself. Guess it's all how you set 'em
up...
Ok finally the headliners Skid Row came out. Bottom line: I liked 'em
a lot, despite several annoying little things.
The Skids opened up with "Slave To The Grind" and kept up a fast-paced
show up until the encores, which were poorly planned and too long
between. One encore was "I Remember You" and they actually STOPPED the
song in the middle, seemed like for about a minute, for them to change
instruments when they changed from the acoustic part to the electric
part. That really bugged me.
Sebastian's voice sounded much rougher then I expected. Sounds like
he's been stressing it out a lot. By the fourth song, he was noticeably
hoarse. He still managed to sing pretty well even so.
I thought the guitar tone used by both players was strange too. They
blended well, but it was just kind of wimpy sounding. I couldn't see
what kind of amp rigs they were using, obviously some sort of mega
compressed high gain something. They were a lot low in the mix at a
lot of points in the show too. One thing that kind of surprised me was
that they were both a little sloppy with their solos. They'd go for
the fast runs on the albums and just not be able to pull 'em off, they
kind of slur through them, skipping notes and stuff. I don't really
care for the mentality that says "play it exactly like the record even
if you sound sloppy doing it". Now if sloppy is your style, that's
different. It's definitely not the sound they were going for and it
bothered me the way it came off.
These were all minor things though, I think the thing that bothered me
the most was this SICK really low frequency weirdness in the sound
system! It was clearly coming from the kick drums and I'm not sure
what it was, some sort of feedback, or bad echo in the room or
something. Anyway, it hurt my ears (and I was wearing earplugs!) and
made a lot of the music sound cluttered and off time. Shame, because I
think they played tighter then they sounded because of it.
As far as stage presence, they were quite good at their posing and they
had a lot of nice pyro stuff. The stage setup was cool and their
lighting show was excellent! I do think that Sebastian has a physique
that doesn't lend itself to tight spandex pants with short legs,
though. They made him look like a big skinny geek (IMHO) by
accentuating the fact that his hips and legs are disportionately thin
compared to his upper body. Whatever, it's not MY bod, he can dress as
he feels comfortable...
Interesting things:
Sebastian saying "Thank you all so f*cking much, Denver. I wish I
could f*ck every one of you" (I was thinking, "My, what a *treat*...")
Friz actually carrying his OWN wallet!
The long *strange* version of "Train Kept A Rollin" done during the
first Skid Row encore, with Chris Cornell from Soundgarden and Marky
Mark from Pantara also singing (and the bass player from Pantara also
sitting it). VERY odd!
Special thanks go to Allen Frisby and Vicki, who picked me up at work,
drove me to the show in Denver, and went WAY out of their way to take
me all the way home to Woodland Park at 2:00am because my car is
broken. That was *really* nice and saved me a lot of headaches!
Thanks!!!

| Actually, I think the vocals are the only thing improved over the original
version. Jimi was a great axman, but NOT a great singer.
I really like this whole album, short as it is. BTW, for Judas Priest fans,
they also do a cover of Delivering the Goods, live, with Rob Halford sharing
the vocals.

un-inspired, robot-like guitar work on SR's Lil Wing is the
over emoted, winey vocals of Bas...

on about a dozen or so tunes. He's was too stoned to be any good on
the rest.

| Chris, I heard it at a Metallca show at Lake Compounce in CT. It was
part of his solo (he didn't play the whole song). I have it on tape
because I snuck a microcassete recorder into the show! (Sshhhh!)

Hey, don't tell, DONT TELL!!!
Actually I snuck in a camera too! Both were in my socks at the back
of my legs. They even searched me and didn't find them because they
only patted the inside and outside of my legs and didn't check the
front and back!

Not that time, but I have before. And at Riverside too. I like the

Last night while watching the Detroit / St. Louis NHL game,
I also had the Canadian Junior "Memorial Cup" game on. It is hosted
in Peterborough Ont. Canada. home of Mr. Bach. Anyhow, I glanced
over at the screen, and they were interviewing Bach while the game
was on (Peterborough vs Guelph) it was pretty funny, he likes hockey
and I guess he also sang the National anthem (sp). The hockey
announcers were saying he did a great job singing, but I missed
it...But I thought it was pretty cool, he'd come back to his home
town, to sing and watch Jr. Hockey, and I was also pretty impressed
at his hockey knowledge...
