to them. One of my first albums was Made in Japan.
I also have one called "The Book of Tallisyn(sp)", which I believe
is their first. It's not really that great, but is interesting
as a relic. Anyone else seen this. I got it in a cutout bin for

I was waiting for this note, too!
_Book of Taliesyn_ was Purple's 2nd album; their first was _Shades of
Deep Purple_.
A bit of history -
Deep Purple formed in 1968 with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, organist
Jon Lord, drummer Ian Paice, and two soon-to-be-dropped musicians, vocalist Rod
Evans and bassist Nicky Simper. This lineup recorded three albums for Tetragram-
maton Records (a company co-owned by Bill Cosby, which soon went bellyup):
_Shades of Deep Purple_, which included their first hit, "Hush"; _The Book of
Taliesyn_, which had another hit, their version of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky
Woman," as well as a showcase instrumental for Lord's and Blackmore's soloing,
"Hard Road (Wring that Neck)"; and _Deep Purple_. These three albums, while in-
teresting, were not in the style of music for which Purple gained their greatest
fame. It's hard for me to describe the style, but it was a sort-of blending of
pop, rock, and jazz, much more melodic in nature than the work which came after.
After these albums, Tetragrammaton Records went bankrupt, and Deep
Purple gave the heave-ho to Evans and Simper. Ritchie Blackmore wanted a differ-
ent direction for the band, and he and the remaining two felt that they couldn't
achieve it with their bassist and singer. In came Ian Gillan and Roger Glover,
in 1969, and the classic lineup was established.
The first album these five recorded was, strangely, _Concerto for Group
and Orchestra_, one of several attempts by Jon Lord to combine symphonic,
"classical"-style music and instruments with rock and electrified instruments.
It was only a partial success, and left many people confused as to Purple's "new
direction." Ahhh...! But shortly thereafter came _In Rock_!
_In Rock_ was the first album showing Purple's new direction. Blackmore
had wanted to do music with a harder edge, and he certainly was! Tracks like
"Speed King," "Flight of the Rat," and "Hard Loving Man" had the band rocking
like it never had before. Deep Purple has always disdained the term "heavy met-
al" to describe their music, but this stuff came damn close! Another stand-out
track from this album is the often-heard "Child In Time," with Gillan screech-
ing somewhere up in the stratosphere.
Three more original albums from this grouping followed: _Fireball_,
which had "Strange Kind of Woman" and "The Mule", among others; the classic
_Machine Head_, which gave us the over-played "Smoke on the Water" and "Space
Truckin'", as well as "Highway Star"; and _Who Do We Think We Are_, which had
"Woman From Tokayo."
These four albums, along with _Made In Japan_, secured Purple's place in
rock history, and established their style and sound as we know and expect it to-
day.
Internal pressures, possibly due largely to overwork, took their toll
on this grouping, and, at the height of the band's power, Gillan and Glover were
(depending on whom you ask) either pushed out or left in late 1973-early 1974.
They were replaced by singer David Coverdale (now of Whitesnake, of course), and
bassist Glenn Hughes. This grouping recorded two albums, _Burn_ and _Stormbring-
er_, and enjoyed its share of success. Blackmore himself left the band after
these two albums, and went off to form Rainbow; he was replaced for one album,
_Come Taste the Band_, by Tommy Bolin. After this, along about 1976, Deep Purple
was gone...
Until 1984 when the classic lineup - Lord, Blackmore, Gillan, Glover,
and Paice - reunited for _Perfect Strangers_. What an album! A perfect come-
back! I've recently read that their _Perfect Strangers_ tour was #2 in ticket
sales/money for that year (1985), second only to Bruce Springsteen. Too bad they
weren't able to keep it up; _House of Blue Light_ was a MAJOR disappointment,
especially after an album as good as _PS_.
But recent interviews with the band indicate that they realize their
mistake, that they know now exactly how people want them to be, and are still
determined to stay together and make Deep Purple everything it once was.
I was slightly disappointed and confused that they'd release another
live album (_Nobody's Perfect_) so soon after being re-united, but... who knows?
*I'm* looking forward to the next STUDIO album, whenever they get to it.
Long live Purple!

| Another little point that might add to the interest....
Strange Kinda Woman was (I think) only on the US version of "Fireball".
The (original) UK version had a track called "Anyone's Daughter"
(I think that's the right title). It was a srot of improvised,
semi-country piece.
If my memory serves me right, the reason Strange... was put on the
US version of the album was that it hadn't been a huge hit there
but large enough. Th record company therefore wanted the track included
to help sell the album.
We have to bear in mind that at this point, Deep Purple's singles
were totally separate from the albums (at least they were over here).
Just thought you'd like to know....

| And while I'm on the subject of one of my original influences...
I'm not so sure that Perfect Strangers was such a good album. On
its own it certainly IS good. However, put it against "Made in Japan"
and "Burn" it doesn't have the same spark of freshness or vitality
about it.
I don't want to start a debate here, just thought I'd give my opinion
(seeing as someone else already had done so). Let's just say that
(with the exception of "Who do we think we are") this band have
produced VERY GOOD albums since the "In Rock" days (with one or
two exceptions.
Some of those albums are in the mega-classic category (eg, "Made
in Japan").
Anything that comes after that is bound to be a bit of a let down,
unless you look at each album on it's own merits. (Hence why "Who do we
think..." and "House of Blue Light" were so disappointing.)
Again,thanks for your patience,
Keith.

Then again, if you want an introduction to the band, you could do
a lot worse than try "24 Carat Purple".
This is a collection of stuff from "In Rock", "Fireball", "Machine

except as an import.
I have a single LP live album that has a bunch of cuts that were
recorded the same nights as the Made in Japan album, but weren't
included. I forget the album title.....
I liked 'Perfect Stangers' a lot (sounds really powerful on CD!). I
also liked 'Nobody's Perfect' a lot. Being a fan of guitar playing, and
a big fan of Blackmore, I didn't mind hearing songs that were already
classics on Made in Japan. Because Richie is always playing different
stuff, and is never static. Although he was amazing back then, I think
he might have even improved his playing since the old days - its just
not as unique anymore.....

Mike, you're right that there was an album titled just _Deep Purple_,
but it was their third release; I do make mention of it, briefly, in my reply
.6, when I say that their original incarnation released three albums.
Not to be nit-picky myself, but the song you mentioned was actually
called "The Painter." The other songs were "April," "Chasing Shadows," "Fault
Line," "Blind," "Lalena," "Why Didn't Rosemary?," and "Bird Has Flown."
Tangentially, I have the Captain Beyond albums, too; how could I NOT,
when two of the band members were ex-Iron Butterfly (my other all-time fave
band) people? Some interesting stuff, but I must admit that I don't go back
to these albums, or the first three Purple releases, anywhere near as often as
I do the post-Concerto Purple stuff.

They even had a &^&&^&* Hammond organ with them! (It did, of course,

| Can anybody give me some info behind the release of Purple's
"Last Concert In Japan" album.
I bought it on Jap Import (for a princely sum!!) many moons ago
to complete my post '71 Purple Collection. I remember thinking
"Deep Purple....naw...DEAD TURTLE!!...more like"
Whoever in their right mind had the "gall" to put this out under
the "Purple" monicker needed more than a full frontal lobotomy!!
The line up for that album was :
Coverdale : Vocals
Hughes : Bass/Vocals
Lord : Keyboards
Bolin : Guitar/Vocals
Paice : Drums
I've heard a number of stories about this line-up -
Bolin's arm being so full of "holes" he could hardly play...
Lord and Hughes involved in Backstage Brawls over ego etc
To hear these guys IMO screwing up such classics as "Burn" and "Highway
Star" is almost too much for this poor old hack to bear.
The record company should have let the legend die in peace not pieces.
It was a major relief when the classic line up got it together to
wipe away the bitter memory of what had gone on circa '76.

Re. 17.
Speaking (yet again) of Iron Butterfly (yes, I *did* say 'tangent'), I
saw them in May of 1988, at the Sommerville Theater in Sommerville, MA. This
time they had MORE than half the original line-up, they had all four of the
"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" band: Doug Ingle (keys and vocals), Ron Bushy (drums),
Eric Brann (guitar) and Lee Dorman (bass). They played most of their classic
hits, and that's really ALL that they played; no new material at all. Ingle
wasn't using a Hammond; he had a Kurzweil keyboard... though I'm not sure why he
bothered: the ONLY sound he used all night long was the '60s Farfisa-like one.
Less than a week later, they played at the Atlantic Records (40th? 25th?) anni-
versary bash in New York. Unfortunately, they WEREN'T shown on HBO's coverage of
the event.
This was billed (at least on the T-shirts they were selling) as a "world
tour," and Ingle made a brief mention that maybe they'd be coming back to this
area sometime. We'll see, I guess. I just wish he'd said that the band would
start recording new material. Oh, well.
It definitely was GREAT to see IB's classic line-up, after almost 20
years!

Ingle probably played that Kurzweil that night 'cause he blew up

I don't really know how much of the lineup was original when they
played that show. I recogized a couple of them from old photos,
but I thought that the guy playing guitar looked way too young to
have been in the original band. He also had a kinda modern setup
and played in a more modern style than I remembered during his improv
parts. (Not that that was bad...)

416.22 | Some info about _Gemini Suite_ | GIAMEM::HARRINGTON | Dreaming of pictures of home | Fri Mar 10 1989 09:24 | 26 |
| I have _Gemini Suite_. I like it a lot more than Lord's earlier effort,
the _Concerto for Group and Orchestra_. Lord seemed to be able to blend the
rock instruments with the orchestral instruments a lot better here (maybe it
just SOUNDS that way because it's a studio recording, rather than live like the
_Concerto_), and the music seems more interesting, with more movement and
feeling. I still listen to it, even after 17 years.
Not to be pedantic, but _Gemini Suite_ is not REALLY a Deep Purple pro-
ject. It was INTENDED to be one - and, like .21's writer, I tend to THINK of it
as one (for instance, I keep it in with my Purple albums) - but when it was fin-
ally recorded, only 3/5 of the band was involved: Lord, Paice, and Glover.
Gillan and Blackmore weren't on the recording; they were replaced by Tony Ashton
and Albert Lee (fwiw, Yvonne Elliman also sang on the recording). In his liner
notes, Lord explained that he wrote the Suite as a Purple project, but that by
the time they got around to recording it, the music had changed from "music for
(a specific) group and orchestra" to, more simply, "music for amplified insrum-
ents and orchestra". To that end, they decided to NOT make it a Purple project,
but rather use featured soloists.
Like I said, I'm not being picky about this - I just thought you'd find
it interesting.

On the subject of Ian Gillan stuff......
Has anybody heard the new album by Gillan and Roger Glover? It
is one of my favorite releases over the past year or so. I can't
remember the title off the top of my head (but it's my favorite,

I remember Glover's last solo effort ("Take Off The Mask" got some
airplay) and I liked it - he seems to be really into unique rythyms.
He does on this, too, but Gillan helps it along by really belting
out some of his best (IMHO) stuff. Now, a lot of the stuff is not
HM, persay, but it is good rock from a couple a great HM'ers. And
"I Can't Dance To This" and "T.B." makes up for the lack of other HM
tunes. Anybody else take a risk on this one?

Yes, Gillan has left again. Surprisingly, the group has not broken
up and is being allowed to make another record. Gillan was upset with
the last album "Purple Light" and especially with the management of the band.
He openly called the manager a "dickhead" at a press conference; in his own
words "you don't stay around too long after that!" Gillan will now pursue
solo projects. Also, there were internal squabbles between Gillan and
the rest of the band.
Meanwhile, the band are currently auditioning for a new lead singer.
I think they may have found one; I'll try to find out more info this weekend.
Dave White
********************************************************************************
(my own comments)
If I had to guess (based on interviews with the band), I'd say that
Gillan was probably more upset with the REACTION to _House of Blue Light_ than
with the album itself. Gillan has always said he likes to "experiment" and "keep
moving forward" and "try different things" - his favorite pre-reunion album was
_Fireball_, for instance, because he thought it represented all those things.
Now, the band has admitted that _HoBL_ was an attempt to "update" their
style and make it more "modern"... so, of course, I see Gillan as having a large
hand in that. However, since the public pretty much rejected _HoBL_ for being
"too different", and since the OTHER band members have said that changing things
was a mistake and that they'll be going back to the style that the public seems
to want... I pretty much expected this to happen.
The above is all guesswork on my part, of course. I welcome correction
if someone knows otherwise.
Whatever the real case, it's too bad. On the one hand, I'm glad there's
still going to be *A* Deep Purple (it's better than nothing at all), and yet...
the Gillan-Glover-Blackmore-Lord-Paice combo always seemed to me to be *THE*
Deep Purple, if you know what I mean. So, in a way, it's like the group HAS
broken up; Gillan's wails always seemed like such a natural, integral part of
the sound.
Oh, well. Them's the breaks, I guess.

also think that their best vocalist since Gillan was Glenn Hughes.
Coverdale has a great voice but Hughes' voice was deeper and better
fitting with their music. Now that Gillan goes again leaves the future
unclear for the group (they should maybe take back Hughes as singer).
About compilations .. there is "Deepest Purple" a very good one
containing their very best from "In Rock" to "Storm Bringer" (but you

Someone on usenet mentioned that, according to a recent Kerrang!,
Purple's new, as-yet-untitled album - with Joe Lynn Turner singing - is com-

I dunno... I remember Blackmore making the point a few years ago that he
thought Turner was great at ballads, but poor at rockers, and that this had been
one of his (Blackmore's) on-going frustrations in Rainbow.
So how come he brought Turner into Purple? Beats the heck out of me!
Hopefully they WILL rock, though... I can't imagine Purple as strictly
a ballad band. Maybe Joe's learned some new tricks since Rainbow.
I guess we'll see...

Deep Purple have completed their new album, entitled "Slaves and
Masters" for RCA, which is to be released October 1st. Following the re-
lease, the band is to begin a world tour in January 1991 beginning in
Europe. Commenting on the new album, Roger Glover said: "This is the
first time in many years we've come close to the Deep Purple sound.
We made this album for ourselves, and if other people like it, that's
great." This will be the first album for their new vocalist Joe Lynn-
Turner. The article I read said that Ritchie Blackmore was at first
totally against using him, but now is quite surprised and happy, saying
that his feelings while making this album were similar to those during
the "Machine Head" sessions. Finally, the band say they're expecting
the press to slaughter them with comments like "Deep Rainbow" etc.
Rumours that the band were breaking up, or will in the near future were
dismissed as "a load of bollocks".

My opinion???
Yech!
Sounded a lot more like Rainbow than Purple, with Joe Lynn Turner singing.
And it was just L-A-M-E! Hope the album is better.....

I couldn't tell you the comparison between this album and previous

All my humble opinion folks.

| I have not heard the new album yet, but I've read in Metal Hammer a not
very favourable critique. Apparently there is a confusion of styles
closer to Rainbow than usual Deep Purple. But I think it's also a
problem because of the presence of almost all Rainbow in Purple,
especially the front-man Joe Lynn Turner (which I read sings even
better). I'm curious to listen it.

| I listened to that album for a week, and loved it. It gets better and
better after a few tries. It sound a lot like Rainbow to me, but I used to
love Rainbow so that's no problem. I think the vacals are great, the keyboards
are much better that in Rainbow (more presence), the guitar is Ok, the
melodies are excelent. "Fire in the Basement" sounds very 70-ish and IMO it's
one of the most Deep Purple sound we had for a while. Also lots of good
backing vocals.
My favorite tracks are "King of Dreams" and "Cut runs deep"

Well last nights concert ended up a a good one....Turner looked
like an overweight OZZIE......Keyboards were as dynamic as expected,
but at times too overpowering. But that's the Deep Purple trademark.
Blackmore's Fender sang...he may not be in the league that some of
the current AXEmen are, but I respect his talents. The concert was
the kick-off to their North American tour....Worcester is the 3rd
stop I believe. They played about 1.5 hours...The only major gliche
of the evening is that Blackmore went through 3 Marshall Amps before
he could find one that would stay on! He had 3 full stacks but ran
at 1/2 speed for 30 minutes as his techs were trying to iron out
the problem.....what the hell, I still came away satisfied!

Not sure to tell the truth. I remember they had some
problems and a falling out back around 1983/1984 and a couple
of them left. (Drummer and Keyboardist if my memory isn't
failing.)
I haven't seen them since 1986 and I thought they were
terrible, but at that point, Becky (?) was still in the
group. They were the best in 1981/1982 when I was living in
the bars.
I'll check for ya' though.

a very apt title at the time. The album was recorded just before Gillan
split with the band, and certainly isn't their best.
The track also pops up on many of the numerous Purple compilations. I'm not
sure if it is on Deepest Purple, but I know it's on "24 Carat Purple"
which is an album I'd thoroughly recommend to anyone needing a sample
of Purple at their early best. Mind you, I'm not sure if that album is
available in the US.
Hope this helps,

416.80 | Deep Purple -- The CD Anthology | JANUS::FAGG | Heavy and LOUD!! | Tue Oct 08 1991 05:43 | 43 |
| I picked up a (new) compilation of DP's stuff over the weekend. It's
called the "Compact Disk Anthology", runs for over 150 minutes. It's on
two CD's and (as the name implies) is not available in any other format.
The package comes with a 24 page potted history of the band, and will
set you back 14.75 (pounds). Yes, that is correct 14.75 pounds! :-)
The album comes from EMI and is a history of all 4 versions of DP between
1968 and 1976. There are 27 tracks, all digitally remastered.
It provides an excellent overview of the band and what they
achieved, as the following track listing demonstrates:
Hush
Mandrake Root
Shield
Wring That Neck
The Bird Has Flown
Blood Sucker
Speed King
Black Night
Child in Time
Fireball
Strange Kinda Woman (live recording from a BBC broadcast)
No-one Came
Highway Star
Smoke on the Water (THE live version from Made in Japan)
Pictures of Home
Woman From Tokyo
Smooth Dancer
Sail Away
Lay Down Stay Down
Burn (live)
Stormbringer
Hold On
Gypsy
Mistreated (live)
Gettin' Tighter
Love Child
You Keep Movin' On
An excellent package and great value for money.

I can't provide any definite answers to the questions
in .81, but...
On Tuesday, I watched a brand new, just released, video
called "Deep Purple: Heavy Metal Pioneers". It's a history of
the band, plus interviews and whatnot. The copyright date on
the tape is 1991; there's no way to tell, just by watching and
listening, exactly WHEN in that year the program was recorded. In
any event, Jon Lord says: "The plan right now is to go into 1993,
and then see where we stand after that. 1993, because that'll be
our 25th anniversary, and I think it'd be nice to be up there on
the stage and say, 'Hey! 25 years! Not bad!'."
So, at least when that segment was recorded, they intend-
ed to hold the band together for a bit longer. It's possible, of
course, for their plans to have changed after that remark was im-
mortalized.
(FWIW, Lord also indicates that the main reason for Gil-
lan's departure from the band seems to have been his conflicts
with Ritchie Blackmore.)
The only other tidbit I can offer is this:
Someone on usenet posted in one of the newsgroups recently
(I forget whether it was alt.rock-n-roll or rec.music.misc) the
fact that he was a subscriber to the Deep Purple Appreciation Soci-
ety's magazine, Darker Than Blue. The DPAS is a United Kingdom-
based fan club (more or less), and Darker Than Blue is a news-and-
fan reviews 'zine. The person who posted said, somewhat obliquely,
that the latest issue of DTB "seemed to indicate that the Slaves
and Masters tour was still ongoing". So, what does that make this? -
second or third hand info? And, at that, of something that only
"SEEMS" to be continuing? I'm not sure what to think, but I wanted
to pass it along anyway. I hope to start subscribing to DTB myself
fairly soon, and maybe I'll be able to provide more info once I get
an issue.

416.96 | Purple Fall Out | YUPPY::OHAGANB | Dirk, Nasty, Stig, Barry, Leggy | Fri Oct 02 1992 07:36 | 68 |
| All this talk of changes within the ranks of Deep Purple has set
me thinking about what happened the last time Gillan and Blackmore etc
left the group. I was amazed at how a lot of the bands active in that
era (from 75-84) were somehow related to Purple, even by the most
fantastic leap of the imagination, as you'll see below. I don't know
what the situation is today but back then the HM scene appeared to be
an incestuous network of band hopping and fragile alliances. X plays
with Y who once played Z who once played with X and so on. Here it is
in a nutshell. Warning! Don't end up an anal retentive 'ol git like
me :^) Since I compiled this from memory, the following is bound to
carry errors, not least chronological and not everything is covered in
terms of band discography.
........somewhere in the mid seventies....Gillan leaves....Coverdale
joins....Glover leaves....Glen Hughes joins....Blackmore leaves....
Bolin joins....Bolin dies....Purple split....Gillan has formed err
Gillan by now....Blackmore has formed Rainbow with Dio and various
other members of ELF(?)....Glover goes into production work....
Coverdale forms Whitesnake some time later....Hughes joins/forms(?)
Trapeze who number Dave Holland in their ranks....Holland replaces Les
Binks as drummer for Judas Priest in 1979....Glover earlier produces
Priest's "Sin After Sin"....Coverdale's first Whitesake album
(Northwinds?) is released around the same time....Blackmore recruits
Jimmy Bain, Tony Carey and Cozy Powell for "Rising"....Not sure who's
playing in Gillan at this time (Clear Air Turbulence)....Out go
Bain and Carey....in come Daisley and Stone for "Long Live Rock n
Roll"....Coverdale has Lord and Paice from Purple, supplemented by
Moody, Marsden and Murray.....Ozzy Osbourne leaves Sabbath....Dio
leaves Rainbow along with Daisley and Stone....Ozzy later forms
Blizzard of Ozz with Daisley, Randy Rhodes and Lee Kerslake....Dio
joins Sabbath....It must be '79 now....Glover joins Rainbow along with
Don Airey and Graham Bonnet....Whitesnake release "Lovehunter"....
Bernie Torme has now joined Gillan and "Mr Universe" is released....
Cozy Powell leaves Rainbow shortly after the first Donnington and
joins Michael Schenker ....Gillan release Glory Road; no personel
change....Whitesnake release Ready and Willing; no personel
change....Not so for Rainbow: Graham Bonnet leaves and is replaced by
Joe Lynn Turner....1982....Randy Rhodes dies and Bernie Torme fills in
temporarily on an American tour having left Gillan....Ozzy calls on
the services of ex-UFO bassist Pete Way, who does'nt prove too popular
with the rest of the band....Way manages to fit this in between
forming Fastway with Fast Eddie Clarke, ex-Motorhead and then forming
Waysted....Incidentally Clarke's replacement in Motorhead is Brian
Robertson, ex-Thin Lizzy....Robertson joins Motorhead on the rebound
from Wild Horses, a band that also featured Jimmy Bain ex-Rainbow and
Neil Carter who joins UFO and then Gary Moore on Wild Horses
demise....Janick Gers, ex-White Spirit is new Gillan guitarist and
will one day join Iron Maiden who are related to Purple by way of
producer Martin Birch....Graham Bonnet joins MSG, who know boast Alex
Harvey's old rhythm section, briefly, before being axed after a series
of misdemeanors including, allegedly, waving his wad at an English
audience....A couple of years down the line will see him form
Alcatrazz which will initially feature Yngwie Malmsteen and then Steve
Vai....Gillan the group split, Gillan the man joins Sabbath in 1983
for an album and tour....Paice has left Whitesnake and joins Gary
Moore which briefly features Charlie Huhn who I can only remember as
having played with Ted Nugent. Glen Hughes will also record with (and
tour?) with Gary Moore a few years later...As for Rainbow, I have'nt
got a clue what they were doing in '83.....Dio has formed Dio with
Jimmy Bain (?) one of the Appice clan on drums (Vinnie?) and Vivian
Campbell who'll later join Whitesnake and then Def Leppard....
Whitesnake replace either Bernie Marsden or Micky Moody or both(?)
with John Sykes, ex-Tygres of Pan Tang and Thin Lizzy.
....Roughly about this time, early '84 Deep Purple reform.

Staynz, you're kidding right? Graham Bonnet has to be the WEAKEST
voice in rock, especially with Rainbow. His voice grates on my nerves
because it sounds like he's on the verge of being out of his range with
every line he sings. I saw Rainbow with Bonnet, and I'll tell ya,
Blackmore must have hated his guts, it was quite obvious. I still think
Turner has a great voice, I was listening to some DP last night and I
think he fits in great with a band like DP or Rainbow. I saw Turner on
the Sraight Between The Eyes tour, he was really good. Even if he does

Okay, way back in this string there was some good stuff on the early
days of Deep purple. Shawn Harrington talked about DP's first 3
albums: Shades of Deep Purple, Book of Talesyn, and Deep Purple.
I am EXTREMELY interested in getting that 3rd album on CD. I have
it on vinyl (Harvest label, not Tetramumbletyblahwhatever). The
first 2 are available on CD through Noteworthy, but for some reason
not the third.
Not trying to stir flack, but this is my favorite DP period. The
Lord/Blackmore solo tradeoffs are astounding. I think "Painter" is
the all-time best DP song. I really want that and "Chasing Shadows"
on CD, but I don't know where to find this CD.
If anybody knows, or knows of an anthology that might have those 2
songs, I would be MUCH obliged.

Okay, Deep Purple fans... Time to nail down at least one
of the rumors that's been floating around lately... And this is
as "official" as un-official news can be!
According to the UK's Deep Purple Appreciation Society,
Ian Gillan HAS, indeed, rejoined the band. Their current plans
include a new LP and tour to celebrate their 25th anniversary
this year.
Given Gillan's and Blackmore's antipathy towards one
another, I don't know HOW this can be, nor how long it can pos-
sibly work out... but I trust that the DPAS has its info cor-
rect; they have their act together!
When the band re-formed in '84, I was speechless with
happy disbelief; when Gillan left in '89, I predicted that the
band would NEVER have that lineup again... I can't tell you how
happy I am to be proven wrong!

| Speaking of Deep Purple, I was down a friend's house in NJ last weekend, and
he had this incredible video of Deep Purple live in 1972 on the Machine
Head tour. This was a pro shot, looks like it was done for European or
Japanese TV. I saw about an hour of it, and after opening with "Highway Star",
they also did "Child In Time", "Strange Kind Of Woman", "The Mule", and
"Space Truckin'". Didn't get to watch the whole thing, since it was too
long (and too late, it being about 3:00am as it was), so I don't know what
else they did on there.
Both the performance and quality were incredible! It was amazing to sit
there and see them play stuff that I had listened to for the past 20 years!
Blackmore was, of course, a wild man on stage, even back then. And Gillan
was reaching those notes on "Child In Time" without even an effort! It was
sickening!!!
I gotta keep an eye out for this video at the next record show I go to -
it was definitely worth owning!

As far as Blackmore goes, besides suffering from arthritus, he has
been and always will be great in my eyes. I saw DP after In Rock came
out, and during Machine Head Tour. You should have seen him in his
younger days, that boy can tear up a strat.
I'll look forward to another DP release. I still think that I prefer
Turner on vocals for DP. He was great in Rainbow.

GILLAN: PURPLE REUNION "ONE_OFF"
DEEP PURPLE *have* reformed, and have already recorded several tracks for a
new album, but IAN GILLAN, in a phone call to Metal Hammer's offices,
revealed that he is approaching the whole project with caution. Not only
that, but he insists that this will not be a reformation as such, more a
one-off project.
"We are writing songs here in Germany, the concept being to put them
together as a 25th anniversary album. I don't know what happened to
Joe Lynn Turner, but all of a sudden I hada phone call from Roger [Glover]
saying 'So what about it?'
"Needless to say, after what went down before I was very tentative about it.
But after talking to a lot of frieds I found that the very mention of
a Purple reunion put a gleam in most people's eyes. So I thought it'd be
trite not to do it, and if it's on the basis of a project *not* a reunion,
because we made arses of oursleves last time. then maybe it'll work.
"But there are some volatile personalities within this band. It's rather
like walking on egg-shells most of the time, but I think it's that chemistry
which has always made theworking environment either billiant or bloody
awful. So we're trying not to speculate too much in case it doesn't
work out, but the new songs are absolutely blinding. I've been asked not
only about the new album, but also about promotional work and some
gigs as well, and I do live touring...so who knows?"
Meanwhile Ian is currently undertaking the *third* rewrite of his
autobiography, which has already taken him over two years to assemble.

the ground" during the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1971, inspiring Smoke on the
Water.
It's too bad that the egos of the original lineup are so big that they can't
work together.
I guess this also means that Steve Morse won't be touring with Kansas.

| Dude,
This is very old news. They've already done two legs of an
international tour with Morse, recorded an album, "Purpendicular" with
Morse that was released about a month ago.
> Guess that means Morse won't be touring with Kansas.
Kansas released an album ("Freak of Nature") a long time ago without
Morse. He's been outta Kansas for a couple of years now.

More like: anyone would do anything to have me play in their band. ;-)

Mikey,
This conference can use all the "wise men" it can attract.
But, one thing it don't need is yet another wise _ss!

Well, the Chili Peps had an ad out, and Steve didn't get the nod (would
have been a better place to promote himself than DP or Kansas). And Fripp
picked Trey Gunn for the 2nd King Crimson guitarist without, I think,
asking Steve first. And, uh, let's see Steely Dan needed a replacement
for Drew Zingg on their latest tour, but, uh, that went to Wayne
Krantz.
:^)
One of these days, I'll have to actually buy something Steve Morse
played on. After you get Primus' "Frizzle Fry," I'll buy whatever you
recommend!

Sean, I remember being somewhat impressed with "Southern Steel"
by Steve Morse.
And when I saw Trey Gunn I could've sworn it said Tracy Gunn.
