414.0. "Manowar" by RDGENG::GREID (In My Drkst Hr....) Wed Jan 04 1989 07:33

Now I know there is already a note on this group in EHM but i thought
i'd start one in here as well on a group that i have really gotten
    into over christmas, MANOWAR.

I believe they have been around for a fair few years and have released
a few albums. Now i was introduced to them through their latest
'Kings Of Metal' album, which is definitly the Bee's knees. A real
value for money tons of energy album. Favourite tracks have to be
'Wheels Of Fire', 'Kings Of Metal' and 'Hail and Fire'. The album
also has a long bass solo called 'Sting Of The Bumblebee', which
after a few plays, i tend to fast forward as do i do on the lyrical
track further into the album. Still it is definitly a great late
contender in the best album of '88 catergory.

I also have purchased recently, 'Fighting The World' and 'Hail to
England', but i havent really listened to either properly yet. My
first impressions of 'Fighting The World' are not as favourable
as "Kings Of Metal' but i guess it may grow on me.

Discography anyone ?, they sound like an exciting band to see live.!

Great group! I've loved them for about 5 years
                now.

Best album has to be Hail to England.

Yeah, that's right. But I think the best album is the new one.
My favor track is 'The Crown and the Ring' cuz it's soooo cool.

I would be ashamed to say I liked these guys.I read an article that
when they signed their contract with 10 records that they inked the
pen with their own blood. Then they went to hospital with blood
    poisoning....Clever,eh?
Their new guitarist is way better than their last.

No, I'm pretty sure it's "All men play on 10". But that's besides the
point. They got some good songs, they got some bad songs.

  > either way they're a bunch of dodgey looking punters.

Actually, they kinda look like Spinal Tap, don't they?!

Damn, too bad Rob isn't here anymore.... Maybe some read-only noter
    knows the answer to this....

Who's voice is it that narrates at the beginning of the song "Defender"
on the "Fighting the World" album? I used to think it was Orson
Wells, but it sounds EXACTLY like a narrative voice at the beginning
of the game Toshinden for the Sony Playstation (sans a fake japanese
    accent).

But Orson Wells died, right? So it's not him at the beginning of the
game. And it probably wasn't him either on the manowar song I'd
guess... although it sounds like him.

    Anyone know for sure?

I think the first Manowar album (their first in the UK circa '82/83)
definitely had awesome Orson performing narrative duties but I think
this album was called "Battle Hymns". Am probably wrong though as I
could never take this band seriously and I did see them live once
which was a great laugh. Was'nt there a guy called Ross the Boss
    playing for them?

    Barry.

they were Spinal Tap for real.

Ross the Boss played guitar with them until about 1990 or there abouts
