408.1 | not so hot live | HAZEL::STARR | Like a fool, fell in love with you... | Wed Dec 28 1988 16:25 | 11 |
| I went and saw Jane's Addiction at T.T. the Bears in Cambridge (MA)
recently. They played there at the beginning of December. At the
time they were touted as the 'next big thing' out of LA, but I was
pretty disappointed. Lousy sound mix, little stage presence, and
fairly mediocre performance turned me right off.
The do have one thing going for them - they are pretty decent and
original songwriters, and aren't afraid to experiment. But that makes
the record better than the live show.

| All I know about Jane's Addiction is that they're another band
from L.A.
I will check them out, though.
And another band out of L.A. that I heard about on WHJY last
night (and this is no joke!)
was Killer Pussy, and WHJY was going to play their song
"Teenage Nympho Enema Nurses in Bondage" at 8:30.
I missed it.

| 3rd and final attempt at a reply;
I love Jane's Addiction, but from the ngernal consensus, people
seem to love them or hate them. They're a combonation of my two
favorite musical styles (ala The Cult's LOVE album) and I think
it's great stuff.
I like all the songs on the new disc, with The Mountain Song (which
happens to be the single) as my least favorite.
I'm there March 1st, how 'bout you Renee?

They did all the tunes on the album, except for like, 'Whore' and
stuff...He was incredible, he came out in red dreds, a black plastic
buckle up corsett with straps, yellow polka dot spandex, with black
plastic thigh high something, and green Sears galoshes....WICKED!!
I love the guitartist! He was great...THE WHOLE SHOW WAS GREAT!!
WHAT MORE CAN I SAY?? They did 2 encores...
Incidentally, for those who doubted that it was really them doing

Strawberries of Lowell surprised these two Jane's Addiction addicts,
by supplying their FIRST album. On it is the LIVE version of Pigs
in Zen and Jane Says...also included on this album is Whores...which
is often played on 'Nasty Habits', WERS 88.9 a couple weeks/months
back. Listening to it for the first time, the tune 'Whores' sounded
much like 'Mountain Song'.
The entire album shows the bands abstract creativity and their ability
to show punk art through music, while still telling a story...

I bought the video a few weeks back. It's pretty funny,

The Mountain Song video it contains is uncut and uncensored.
We're talking nudity here kiddies. It's a very interesting
video.
The rest is basically a home movie type of deal.
A book report by Eric, while he's sitting on the toilet.
A look at Dave's eel, and apartment, and a trick by Dave's eel.
Stephen Perkins eating fruit, and playing drums on pans and a water
bottle.
Perry drinking a green malt, shooting a bottle rocket off in his
bedroom, with his girlfriend, and pet rooster.
Perry doing rockandroll aerobics in his underwear on his bed with
his girlfriend.
A little ditty called "City" performed by Perry and Dave.
All in all, very entertaining!! I thought it was a riot myself!
Check it out, it's ten bucks.

408.35 | I wish I was Ocean Size... | BUFFER::GOLDSMITH | | Thu Aug 10 1989 16:48 | 14 |
| For anyone who saw them at TT's, you have to excuse them. They
were all pretty strung out on heroin, and Perry had a broken leg. They
did a whole mellow set with the Mountain Song as their most upbeat.
At the Citi, they just ripped. The band was great, and the whole
crowd was going off. Except for the fact that they didn't go on until
11 for a 7:00 show, and the opening band blew, the show was great!
Ocean Size is the best on Nothing's Shocking. That's just such a
good tune. Trip Away is the best on the first album.
As far as classifying them: don't try. You can't really. They're
just good and weird. Bisexuals on heroin. Makes for a good album.

I finally found Jane's Addiction's first album.
It's great, of course.
I have to agree with ya Steve, Trip Away is a great tune.
I like the additional lines in Pigs in Zen, and love the
lyrics for 1%.
Overall, I like the whole album, it's recorded live in L.A.
(where they were "bread and spread") with two covers...
Rock and Roll by Lou Reed (handled in cool fashion I might add)
and Sympathy by the Stones.
Also think I Would for You is great...
If this is how Jane sounds live, I can't WAIT to see them live!!!

It really is a killer album. It goes from really hard to really heavy

of Sympathy and Rock and Roll. They add an interesting twist, and not
your typical covers, I might add.
When they come around again, make sure that everyone sees them, because
they were the ultimate. I heard from a friend of a friend that his
friend was working on the art for the t-shirts for the new tour...SO,
that only means we'll be seeing something new soon.

| Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual
No so shocking about the expectations you go with here. With
Perry Farrell's overblown art project - Jane's Addiction - the
psychadelic fuse for a generation of post-metallers embraced by
every constituent of Heavy Metal Republicanism. You'd figure the
follow up to 88's breathtaking "Nothing Shocking" to be something
less inspired. A formularic repeat of the last album's binding
Halen/Zep/Sabbath-on-angel dust intuition, perhaps.
Not so, in fact. RDLH rates as a pretty rapturous trick bag of found
object spatter as sex-harnessed garbage pickers Farrell and Co have
gone foraging miles beyond the scurrilous guitar scraping of NS.
Less a work of Metallic velocity, the mood here is lucid and dream
like, an eerie Chinese puzzle that moves with ease from eerie,
orchestral semantics to skewed, Arabic configurations. The closest
it gets to the retro-worship of Mountain song comes with No One's
Leaving.
Halved in classic fast/slow sides respectively, only in odd side one
moments does RDLH refract images of it's predecessor. Actually, it's
more. More direct (Stop). More absurd (Sex & Drugs). More
challenging on guitar-whizz Dave Navarro (Obvious) and the devastating
Avery/Perkins rhythmic tag team (Ain't no Right). A broad, multi-
coloured swathe of sound and genuine vision, the White Album
comparisons seem especially on target.
If anything, side two bears a slight semblance to the Velvet
Underground and Nico, Then She Did smacking of VU's Femme Fatale and
Sunday Morning.
3 Days, RDLH 13 minute tour de force of mood and motion, rates as the
band's finest composition to date. Heady and driving, immense and
instant, they could have dragged the damn thing out the length of a
full side and it would've still seemed too short.
With Farrell swearing up and down that RDLH could very well be his
exit from the Bowie-resurrection/androgyny guru business, it's a
credible as hell note to go out on. Then again, he could be telling
a lie.
F*cking artists.

| I just pulled out Jane's Addiction - Nothings Shocking from the local
CD library and was very impressed with it. It has a unique style to it
and yet seems also to draw on influences from a wide variety of
sources, from Pink Floyd to Sex Pistols.
Hard to say which tracks I prefer as they all stand by themselves, but
I guess Standing In The Shower, Summertime Rolls, Mountain Song and
Idiot's Rule take some beating, especially as they are in sequence.
Pigs in Zen is a great finisher too.
This is the first time I have heard this band, so I would be interested
if someone out there could give me a Discography. Also is this their
best album or is there any others to be recommended?

Their new CD is out. It's called "Ritual De Lo Habitual"
It's supposed to be completely crazy.
I think it's only their second album.
Includes :
Stop/No one's leaving/Ain't no right/Obvious/been caught
Stealing/Three days/The she did/Of course/classic girl
And it's only released on CD and cassette.

I should have known better when I thought I could get tickets at
door for their show at TT's (Cambridge) which wasn't too long
after the release of Nothing Shocking. I sadly missed their
recent Orpheum show.
It's great to hear them on College, FNXish, BCNish and AAFish
(always changing dials) type radio stations. The fact that they appeal
to such a wide listening audience is great. Sometimes you hear
how a band that doesn't fit into a neat little pigeon hole has
trouble but I think it has definately had the opposite affect
with them.
It's even great that there's such a range of music within
themselves, i.e. "Jane Says" hardly sounds anything like
"Been Caught 'Stealin".

Just picked up Ritual do la habitual, and it really is as good as
Nothings Shocking! I say as good as because I thing both albums are
equally good, neither surpassing the other in quality. I have only
listened to Ritual once through but it is immediately impressive.
There are very few albums that I have been able to say that about.
I wonder if these guys could get round to producing a concept album, as
their music is varied enough to support that.

About the name Jane's Addiction, Perry says...
"When I lived in LA originally, I was living in a house with
between 8 and 13 kids, depending on who broke up with his girlfriend
and whose band was practicing in the garage at the time. One day this
girl Jane appeared... she ended up living in the room next to mine and
we became close. When you invite someone like her out, and you come to
get her and she's dancing in front of the mirror with a wig on, and
there's nobody there, you gotta name a band after her."

been saying. I guess the point I trying to make is that sometimes you
have to give an album two, three, four listens before you can really
appreciate it. I'm glad I hung on to it and it is turning into one of
my more listened to CD's. BTW my kids, ages 3,2,and 1/2 all get off on

JANE SAYS GOODBYE
Farrell to kick his addiction after the tour is complete
Celebrated Californian rockers Jane's Addiction are to split up once
their current touring commitments are complete.
Mayhem understands that vocalist and band leader Perry Farrell is keen
to persue other artistic projects, including a film, and feels that the
band have achieved all they can without repeating themselves.
The band are to release one more album, made up of material that was
not included on their last two albums, Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de
lo Habitual, but they do not plan to record or tour together again.
Guitarist Dave Navarro and bassist Eric A will continue to work
together. Drummer Steve Perkins' plans are unknown at present.
Farrell is set to continue work on his film project, which is titles
"Gift". He has also written material for a solo album, but this is not
expected to emerge for another couple of years.
Jane's Addiction's current RDLH album has been certified Gold in the
US, and the band looked set to break through from their current cult
status into a major attraction. No official announcement on their
future has been made as yet.

MTV showed clips from Farrell's film project, "The Gift", last
night. It was "different" but I guess that's not too surprising.
What I saw was pretty interesting... they had one scene in a drug
rehab where Perry was the doctor. Addicts were sitting around telling
their drug stories. In an interview following the show, Perry said the
addicts were buds of his from Venice. No music in this scene.
Another scene was Perry and his girlfriend's "wedding ceremony" and
shots of the two of them hanging out, surfing... whatever. "Classic Girl"
played along with this scene.
A live video of (I forget the name of the tune... "I am skin and
bones.....") was shown.
The other scene/video/whatever was JA playing some tune with Ice-T
and a guitarist from Ice-T's Syndicate. The vocals were pretty much
limited to Perry saying "Don't call me whitey, nigger." and Ice-T
saying "Don't call ne nigger, whitey." They then would sing something
together but I didn't get those lyrics.
The whole thing is supposed to be finished within a few months or
sooner or later. 8^)

I *love* the sound of this band! So much energy, so much eccentricity.
Dave Navarro has an excellent guitar sound as well. I really like his
choice of effects (and no effects), there's a big contrast in the
different sounds, yet a very similar two or three basic tones making
the basis of it all. Very understated, but at the same time very
dominant.

Subject: Rock singer arrested
Date: Wed, 16 Oct 91 19:10:56 EDT
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (UPI) -- Perry Bernstein, lead singer of the rock
group Jane's Addiction, was arrested Wednesday at a hotel and booked for
being under the influence of controlled narcotics.
Bernstein was arrested about 12:40 p.m. after he returned to his room
at the Holiday Inn at 530 Pico Blvd., Sgt. Steve Brackett said.
Brackett said police were called to the hotel after maids found
narcotics paraphernalia in his room used for ``speedballing'' -- a
combination of heroin and cocaine.
Brackett said Bernstein -- an outspoken advocate of heroin -- was under
the influence of drugs when he returned to his room and was booked at
the city jail on $1,000 bail.
His two companions were released because they were not under the
influence, Brackett said.

| Perry had been sharing needles with Gutiarist Navarro for the past
year or so. He never told him or anybody that he was tested HIV
positive about 6 months ago....but he continued to share his needles.
Navarro became so enraged that he broke into Perry's house and tried
to kill him...So therefore JA is no more and Perry is destine to die
young!
:*( sad story, cause I really liked them

My band is doing a benefit gig this coming Sunday for a local
guitarist that died of aids from the same way (IV drugs). It's a bitch,
the guy could play a lot of Van Halen (Hot for Teacher, Panama) note
for note, he just made that fatal mistake. The other bitch is he had
been clean for a few years before it happened. There are about six
bands involved, a lot of musicians knew the guy so you know it is gonna
be a major musician show. Proceeds go to his mother, the only survivor.
Until you've seen someone die from something like this ( I have) you'll
never really understand.
I understand - cuz I've seen it.

| So can we presume that Navarro is now also HIV+?

| Not to sound overtly negative, but Navarro mentioned in an interview
he knew of the risks involved in his 'habit', and although he often
shared needles, I thought he was bleeching pretty regularly?? It would
be pretty dumb if he was blowing it off just cuz he was shooting up
with a fellow band member.

| You'd think if you could afford the drugs you could afford to buy some
new needles. Might cost more but hey the life you're saving could be
your own.

I was in a record store this weekend. They had a "new releases"
schedule posted, and much to my surprise and elation...
Jane's Addiction was on it. I don't remember the release date, but it
was something to the effect of November.
Probably some new unreleased stuff?
Anyone else heard this?

| I read in another conference that Porno for Pyro's debut album will be
released on March 23rd. For anyone that doesn't know, this is singer
Perry Farrell's newest band since J'sA split up.
