| My relationship with this band huh ?
I do the live sound for the band my man. And on further consultation
with the band last night we decided that because of the problems
with exchange rates etc. we will send a couple of tapes to the states
free of costs. The overall quality may not be the best possible
but it will have to do.
A Revox B77 is the master mixed tape.

The SATYR Biography
SATYR formed approx 15 months ago (late autumn 1987), form the remnants
of two bands. Sabotage and Night Flight. From Sabotage came the
following band members:
J (Jon Wilson) - Bass Guitar and Vocals.
Dek (Derek Duncan) - Drums and Backing Vocals.
Atomic Alan M ( Alan Mathews)
- Lead/Rhythm and Backing Vocals.
From Night Flight came:
Andy (Ygnwie is not fat!) Watson.
- Lead/Rhythm.
In the last 15 months, the band has been playing extensively. Mostly
local but with the occasional trip out to the sticks.
The gear used the last time I looked was as follows:
J - Aria ZZB Custom Blood Bass
H & H 250W Bass Machine
H & H 250W Bass Machine Cab.
H & H 15" Top Horn.
Dek - Double 26" Bass Drum 10 piece
Premier Kit + Various Cymbals
Atomic Alan M - Kramer Focus 1000
Marshall 50W Head
2 x 4 x 12 Marshall Cabs
Rockman Distortion & Chorus Generators.
Yamaha Pedal Delay & Boss Volume Pedal.
Andy - Tokai Strat with ESP neck, also
a second ugly Tokia but don't know
What it's called.
Marshall 50W Split Channel Head
2 x 4 x 12 Marshall Cabs
Various Distortion units (he now works in
a guitar shop).
Boss Pedal Graphic.
The last demo, Bring on The Night contains only one song from 1988 that
being Snared. The other songs on the tape Beware The Moon (1987) and
Bring on The Night (1986).
The biggest gigs of 1988 would have been a support slot for PALLAS, a
band who originated in the Aberdeen area, and a Charity Gig for a UK
Charity organisation called POWERLINE. This particular charity is of
interest to the band for two reasons. The first being it is an all
Heavy Metal organisation , and the second it is providing Musical
instruments for Handicapped Kids, to enable them to express themselves
better.
The P.A. we use at present is as follows:
Desk: Aces 16->2 with 2 Aux channels one with send/return.
Cabs: 2 JBL 18" columns (sub bass), 2 45/60 Bass Cabs, 2x15 Leech flared
horns for low mid, 2 x 2 x 12 hi mids, and , 2 horns for the hi.
Crossover: Only 3 band at the moment but looking at a 5.
Amp Racks: Bass- Munro 500, Mid- RSD 400, Hi- Nad 100.
Foldback: Amps for this varies but on occasion we have been known to
use an Orange 400, or , a Fal 100. Depends really whats working at the
time.
The P.A. when we get some money together:
Desk: (24) 16-4-2 with 4 Aux.
Cabs: No real change but we are looking for Earthquake bins for the
JBL's.
Crossover: 5 band
Amp racks: Carver PM 1.5 for Bass, RSD 1000 for mid, and probably a set
of 4 - 200W amps for the Foldback.
What more can I tell you. The band is definitely pretentious, but there
again I would say that. If you want to know more get in touch.

Foldback:- is the term used when describing the onstage Monitors
ans sh*t. You will find that many Mix Desks in Europe have the channel
built in. What it means is , you don't have to go and use up all
your auxilary channels providing Monitors for the band.

If I remember correctly, Greg sez he will copy the demo to anyone
who wants a copy in the States. I sure he will correct me if I'm
wrong on that point though.

Moorings Bar 18-Mar-1989
As per usual SATYR did there level best to ensure that I
ended the weekend locked up at the local Asylum. After I had
got down to the venue to get the P.A. set up for the gig,
(this was about 13:00 hrs) I was given the wonderful news.
Oh, Bob, There is a slight problem. We has an accident with
the RSD 800c. "What do mean?" enquired I. "It won't power up"
replied the Road crew.
Sure enough, power getting in, but not powering up. Oh well
it looks like another joyful weekend. Anyway without getting
too technical about this. It was unfixable before the gig. I
managed to get a loan of a Rack of Amps and with about 2 hrs
before sound check I rewired the entire cable looms to match
the borrowed Racks.
Sound check passed and every thing set for the gig.
The gig was a storm! The only two problems encountered,
were: a) The Drummer breaking the Spring inside of his
Hi-Hats. & b) The Borrowed Racks being a bit on the
powerful side for the set up we have to use at this
particular venue. I did have problems with the sound
starting to break up on the Mids but a bit of EQ tweaking got
this under control. I must say that the band were
surprisingly helpful on this particular occasion. I thought
that they would be a bit nervous before going into the studio
this coming weekend, but no, everybody was totally cool about
the whole evening.

band, but I was really impressed).

| BTW, Bonzo - I heard the Satyr demo when I was visiting Greg in Colorado.
I was really impressed - that's a pretty cool demo. Nice song writing,
and a pretty good sound. My only complaint is that it may cound a little
too much like Dokken - it could almost pass for a Dokken demo. But I still
like it - when do we get to hear more?

This is a brief summary of what/who/where/when SATYR are.
This will be send with all the copies of the new demo.
A SATYR is: a lustful or sensual-minded man.
SATYR are:
Jay Wilson - Vocals & Bass Guitar
Andy Watson - Lead Guitar
Alan Matthew - Lead Guitar
Derek Duncan - Drums
SATYR are an Aberdeen based, Metalodic Band. The band formed
in the autumn of 1987, from the remnants of two bands who
were active on the local HM scene. Jay, Alan & Derek came
from Sabotage, with Andy joining as the new boy from Night
Flight.
From conception, this bands' attitude has been one of
determination to play the best original material from an
intensive writing period, which is still going on.
The early results of these endeavours were captured with the
recording of the "BRING ON THE NIGHT" demo, which was
recorded at Ice Station Studios, run by PALLAS guitarist
Niall Matthewson. This demo lead to SATYR being invited to
support PALLAS on their home coming concert at Aberdeen's
Ritzy's Night Club on the 14th June 1988. This night helped
place SATYR's name at the top of the local HM Scene. The band
have also been playing at smaller clubs in the area, trying
out their new material with great success.
Due to the endeavours of friends of the band, the "BRING ON
THE NIGHT" demo found it's way to the U.S.A., in particular,
Massachusetts, South Carolina & Colorado. This has been met
with a lot of interest, and there are now advanced orders for
the next recording. SATYR have been invited over to play a
few dates, but this has so far proved unviable due to
financial considerations.
One of the interests of the band, has been working with a
charity organisation called Powerline. They have worked on a
number of projects with this organisation, notably a concert
for the 1988 TELETHON appeal. Countrywide this organisation
(then under the FORGE banner) raised more than �1500, which
went to deaf kids' charities, Powerline's main Beneficiaries.
SATYR was back in the Studio Easter Weekend, to record their
new demo (as yet nameless), and the results should be
available in the next few weeks.

The drums/rythmn/bass work was all down when I left the studio
last night. (I had to leave early as it is a 2 hr drive and I had
to come in to *work* this morning).
The lead work & Vox will be finished tonight, with the final mix
finished on Tues. That means that were gonna have to rent some studio
time to run off the tapes for the noters that want it, so be patient.
As soon as we get them finished, they will be sent. TTT, you should
have your copy for Berkshire Radio by the weekend.

The new demo is *FAR* better according to Derek who is sitting behind
me. There will be a slight delay in getting the tape to you, ie

first air play was on Radio Forth at 8:45 last night, so the band

| I've just gotten a hold of a copy of the new demo and it is gooooood!
There is one problem.... they have just been told the costs of
production/tapes/covers/etc. and they have had to put a cover charge
on any requests for tapes received after today. 8^(.
That cost will be $5 to cover costs and postage. Those who have
already placed an order will receive it FREE of charge.

| I forgot to add that we will have to sell approx 500 tapes at �2.99
just to recoup the costs of this tape. So I don't think that $5
will really cover the costs but coz of the support SATYR have received
from certain members of this conference. They think that it is
worth the loss just to promote the bands name.
They have commisioned a Graphic Artist to design the sleeve & are
paying the Studio for the production of the tapes. That means at
least a three week delay in delivery.

| I've now heard the remix and it is a vast improvement. The guitars
can be heard now. But to the point of a new reply:
Satyr have been getting air play on a Danish Radio station! It would
appear that this Radio station has got a hold of the "Bring on the
Night" demo, and played "Snared" & "B.O.T.N.". There was a very
unusual letter that the DJ sent to the band and I shall try to get
extracts to post here. With any luck some of the other Decie bands
in the conference can send tapes to this Radio Station and also
get some airplay.

| The first of the new 4 song E.P.'s to be made are finished (almost)
and one is at this very moment winging it's way to Tony for his
friendly promoter. (Satyr have agreed to your name on the guest
list Tony) Unfortunately, the first 50 or so tapes are for the
media/promotors/record companies, but it shouldn't be long before
there are some tapes winging their way to the States for all the
people that have been patient enoygh to wait. I'll post another

At least that was the source of a MEGA argument in the boozer last
Fri night. It would appear that when they decide what they are
goin' to do, I am gonna get the first 20 tapes (or maybe vinal)
to send off to you guyz.
I'll talk to the band tonight and try to find out more.
Once again , my apologies about the delay. Perhaps Tony the ,sorry

There is one problem.... they have just been told the costs of
production/tapes/covers/etc. and they have had to put a cover charge
on any requests for tapes received after today. 8^(.
That cost will be $5 to cover costs and postage. Those who have
already placed an order will receive it FREE of charge.

| Let me be the first to review the NEW Satyr demo ... got it in the
mail yesterday (thanx Bonzo ... and I'm sending your 2EZ demo this
morning ...).
I wasn't expecting the material to be this heavy, which was a pleasant
surprise ! I liked it a lot. I only had time to listen to it 1
time through so the names of the songs aren't etched in my brain
yet, but I liked all 4 of 'em. I can just imagine how well these
tunes would go over in a club because you can feel the excitement
in the material even though the tape doesn't convey all of the "live"
feeling, but then nobody's ever does.
About the only negative thing I can say about it is that the guitars
weren't far enough in front sometimes, especially on a couple of
the leads .... and it's a shame too because these guys can scald
a fretboard !

No Amps were used, it was all DI'd to the desk. All of the Guitar
work was done on either a Rockman - Ada MP1, Graphic, Pitchshift
- and I beleive the rythmn on Cryin' in the Shaddows was done with
an ME5. I will have to find what kin of FX was used on the Final
mix as I wasn't there.

| DIRECT IN ? You gotta be kidding !!! I listened to the tape MANY
times after I got home yesterday morning. The more I listen, the
better it grooves, and the guitar parts have to grow on you I guess,
because the leads don't seem as buried as they were the 1st time
Satyr invaded my ears ... those guys can cook !

Hasn't your copy arrived yet! It should have been there at least
a week ago. If it hasn't, let me know and I shall send another

To buisness.
Derek the drummer from Satyr may have to leave the band due to "Work
commitments". More on that later. Satyr have not gone to vinyl
with the "SATYR" 4 track E.P. It would have cost �1300! and they
can market an album of 10 tracks for around �2000.
If Derek does decide to leave Satyr, and the band decides to carry
on, the 1st Album would be recorded with the new drummer. i.e. The
previously recorded tracks will be re-recorded with the "new" drummer.
More news when I get it.
Sledge. OOOOPs sorry that should read Bonzo.
P.s. I am still waiting to get a hold of the Art work for the E.P.
so when I do I shall Digitize it, place it with the newish Biog,
encapsulate it in a postscript file and send it to whoever wants
it.

I like this demo better than the other one, much better, except
maybe it's my ears, but too much reverb maybe on the voice?
You really can't hear the singer clearly, and he overpowers
the rest of the band.. there is one song on there that isn't
that way, and it's my favorite, I can't think of the name
though..
All in all, good job.

| I got my copy recently too, but still haven't had a chance to listen to
all of it. I finished a couple of songs and would say from those that
the production is MUCH better then the last demo. They seem to have
changed their style a bit, as they no longer remind me of Dokken.
I thought that the guitar solos weren't as bold or striking as those on
the last demo though (at least on what I've heard of it so far).
I'll put more in when I've listened to it throughly, but it sounds very
good. Definately a lot of improvement.

| The latest news from the Sats is that they will probably be Headlining
a charity gig at the Cafe Club in Dundee, at the and of the month,
and I heard a whisper that they have been offered the chance to
put one track on a compilation album to come out next year, with
the added insentive of a live Video also.

any news here.

one for the record companies methinks). If I get this confirmed

this is still an unconfimred rumour (I was pi$$ed and so was the
band), but if it goes ahead I will post a note with prices etc.

that the pressures are too much and has decided to leave.
This will not effect the new tape but it does mean that there be

| Well it's been a while but here's the latest info.....
Alan Mathews has rejoined SATYR....
They are almost finished in the Studio and I have heard a rough
mix of one of the tracks "UNDERFIRE" and it kicks serious a$$!
I spoke to Derek the Drum man this morning and was told that they
should be finished the first 3 tracks in the coming week, so I will
look forward to reviewing that when I get it.
I don't know for sure if this tape will be distributed or not as
it will be mixed down to DAT. This I'm sure you realise makes it
kinda difficult for us mortals to hear it, but I will get a normal
cassette version before too long (I hope).
If there is interest for the tape I will let the band know, but
I cannot say for sure if this means they will let me send you guys
a copy.
Tony, could you mail me when you get the chance as I have a favour
to ask of you!

| The following is a message from Derek Duncan to Bob Irvine regarding
Satyr coming over to the States (as mentioned in -1) to hopefully play
some gigs. Per usual our lovely country is all wrapped up in red
tape...read n weep:
Bob,
Basic details about getting to the States this year.
If I understand the letter form the American embassy correctly, we all
need to obtain a temporary workers visa (H). However before we can
obtain the visas we must obtain approval from the American immigration
authorities. To obtain this our 'employer' (hopefully we can be put in
touch with an agent or a promoter) in the States must file a visa
petition on form I-129H or I-129L with the nearest office of
Immigration and Naturalisation Service.
There are fees involved as well but I don't know what they are. There
are a lot of other forms mentioned which will be sent to us if and when
the I-129H is approved.
All in all it looks as if is going to be a real hassle, I imagine they
would want exact dates and venues of where we propose to play as well
so that they can find out how much we earn etc. So basically we need a
promoter to organise a few gigs for us and fill out the above form
before we can consider applying for visas. The likelihood of us
getting the above I imagine will be pretty slim, does Matt know any
promoters or club owners who would be interested ?.
Dave and Kev have been pursuing dates on the continent as an
alternative to going to the States, it looks as if this is far more
feasible as there are apparently dozens of clubs in Holland and Germany
crying out for metal bands and we don't need visas etc to play there.
Obviously from a personal point of you all the guys in the band would
rather go to the States so that we could meet Matt and some of the
other guys who seem to be pretty supportive and positive about the band
but this is looking less and less likely,certainly this year anyway.
I think thats about it for now Bob, hopefully see you Friday night when
you can hear the re-mix of Underfire.

Hi Bob,
Just confirmation of what you may already know, post it in the Notesfile if you
wish.
Live dates : 25th Oct Biancos Perth
9th Nov Pinegrove Elgin
21st Nov Music Hall Aberdeen
Recording : We go into the studio to record 2 tracks for a compilation
album/tape, sponsored by the local council on the 28th Oct.
We have shelved plans meantime to do a 'live' recording
using Steve's Tascam 688 until we see how the 2 studio
tracks turn out.
Thats about it meantime, maybe see you at the weekend.

I do know that it is in Perth though... Derz is goin down this weekend
to check the place out, and decide how much P.A. to take so I will get

Apparently the place is under new management... again!
Anyways, it could have been worse last time, but the good bit it
this time we should have a fully operational P.A. (the lines are so bad
in that place, we lost 2 800W P.A. amps!)
But look on the bright side... it will definately get the adrenelin
going....

They have reformed with a slightly new direction, under the name

| There appears to be a band called SATYR in Spain who have released an
album, but that's about all I know at the moment...
Street Legal will be a more melodic band than "Satyr", and concentrate
on writing songs, as opposed to the RIFF driven stuff they have being
doing under the name SATYR....

| I have known this for a few months, but this was announced on our local radio station
on friday afternoon. Andi Watson formerly of SATYR, STREET LEGAL, and at present with
KISS THE CLOWN, will be leaving Scotland in March to attend The Guitar Institue in
Los Angeles. If anyone wants to see this guy in action, I will put a reply here when I
know for certain he has a new band together.
