Somebody tell me which album has "Ride Like The Wind' on it, i suppose
it must be the latest.?!
BTW - i have heard some of their old stuff which was pretty heavy,
but i read some interview with them recently and they were being
accused left, right and centre of going Commercial and Pop Rocky.
Don't you just get sick of the media, i mean who gives a sh**, after
all it's up to the band, what musical path they pursue.

SAXON was certainly a hot band when they surfaced in 1979.
They started out with a heavy duel guitar sabbath sound...
They have fizzled since then trying to commercialize to american
tastes. They tried to get a more american sound with Crusader in
1984. This album was excellent and new drummer Nigel Glockler played
his Neal Peart style of drumming to perfection. A strong album that
really fizzled. Since then Glockler departed for new drummer Nigel
Durham but unfortunately the latest album Destiny is a real poor
effort in my opinion....

379.8 | maybe the LP was 'Strong Arm of the Law'??? | HAZEL::STARR | Like a fool, fell in love with you... | Mon Dec 05 1988 15:07 | 9 |
| I have one or two Saxon LPs, but don't really listen to them that much.
The one song I remember that I really liked was the first song on Side 2
of one of their albums (don't ask me shich one!), I think it was called
"This Town Knows How to Rock" - it had some pretty incredible drumming
in it!
Anybody recommend any of their albums as the best?

| It's gotta be "Wheels Of Steel" for pure POWER....!!
I caught Saxon early on when they were up front of the NWOBHM (that's
New Wave of British Heavy Metal to you mate!!) with the likes of
Maiden etc...etc..
I remember hearing "Stallions of the Highway" of their first album
and BAM!!, I was hooked.
That first album was just a sampler for what was to come....
The aforementioned "Wheels " album sent my HI-FI running for cover...
Tracks like Motorcycle Man, Strangers In the Night and Wheels Of
Steel are just all time classics. They still make my hair stand on
end today.
I saw them at the Glasgow Appollo on that tour and it was like WOOOAH!!
They were hungry, mean and determined to rock the life outta you.
"Strong Arm..." album followed as did the next tour but it was even
noticeable at that stage the pot was beggining to go off the boil.
Dallas 1pm IMO was the best cut off that album. The gig was so-so
and I remember thinking "Nah, ...just an off night."
I haven't bought a single Saxon item since....nor have I ever gone
back to see them.
A great HM band was lost to mediocrity and commercialism......shame
!!

Well, three years and 2 days since the last reply!
I'm on shift here, got the TV on as background music (like you do) and
who should come running on stage but ... yup, Saxon!
God these guys are passed it.
Biff is overweight, BAD paroxide job, complete with neck scarf, one of
the guitar players is wearing a white tassled leather jacket. I ask you
eh... tassles are way out of style now but WHITE tassles ???? Wooooo...
The other guitar player just looks like he'd rather be at home gardening
and his perm looks decidedly dodgy with that recieding hairline.
I ask you, whats the world coming to when old farts are running around
with bad paroxide jobs, white tassled jackets, neck scarks, Charvel
guitars (ack!), half-head-of-hear-anyway perms all bobbing back and forth
with a nauseating grin like weebles. I'm gonna puke!
BACK TO THE TAR PITS FOR THESE OLD FOSSILS!!!!

| I saw SAXON twice at rivermead in reading , and they wernt bad ,
considering that there are worse bands out there which sound just
darn right dribble which get so much airplay and exposure its like
having a spike up your bottom !
However some of there stuff is quite good at least up there with some
of the stuff being made now . there last one they did , ( solid balls
of rock ) which has some kicking riffs , they also did an album called
back on the street which is sort of a best of saxon some nice tunes on
that . Read some place that they were bring out a new record in the
next couple of months , might be good , well to some small amount of
people ........

| Is this the same Saxon I saw about 11-12 years ago, opening up for
Triumph at E.M. Lowes in Worcester? Or where they Saxton?! Whichever
it was, they stunk. As for memories, first or second song, the bass
player guy ran over and kissed the singer guy on the crotch. More
vulgarities happened after that. Wicked slobs...
Man the profanities and boos that came from the crowd after that
little episode... Would have made even Axl Rose leave the stage.

| Did so meone mention "Triumph".
Sorry, but that's another band I sorta throw into the "Wanna be like
every other band" category, which perhaps is best described as a
"Generic band".
I don't think they're nearly as blatant about it as Saxon. But I
saw a couple of videos and every note, every lyric, every move,
every angle seemed like something I had seen or heard a thousand
times before.
And I know their guitar player Rik Emmett seems to garner a certain
amount of respect in guitar circles but sorry... I see him as just
another "generic" guitarist. And his columns in Guitar Player
magazine seem to even blatantly teach "Generic guitar".
Why am I saying all this? I think it's just that it's been a long
time since an album came out by some of the ("emotionless") innovators
I like to listen to like Morse, Vai, Larry Carlton, Satch, Eric
Johnson, etc.
I long for something "new".

379.39 | Meals on Wheels of Steel! | ARRODS::OHAGANB | notes from hell | Fri May 28 1993 15:34 | 18 |
| Saxon eh? Gawd, I remember nipping along to Hammy Odeon especially
to see them support Whitesnake in spring 1980. I dug out the old
albums recently and had a good laugh/wince. Still they did put
out some good tunes at the height of NWOBHM; "Dallas 1pm", "Hungry
Years" "Wheels of Steel" "Strong Arm.." "747.." but there was corn
by the bucket-load as well.
Biff Byford made me laugh though, he looked about 70 years old back
then (a sort of Vera Duckworth meets Tommy Aldridge) and what with those
hollow cheeks, looked as if he wore dentures that were constantly
threatening to escape. He was flanked on one side by a guitarist (Paul
something?) who wore a cap to hide his baldness and on the other side by
the this wirey little bassist (Steve Dawson?) who was partially bald,
save for some reluctant strands hanging for dear life to the side of his
head. Saxon never made it in the States because they were simply too
ugly. :^)
