366.0. "K-Tel and other mix/match-'ems" by ANT::SLABOUNTY (Form Feed = <ctrl>v <ctrl>l) Mon Nov 28 1988 07:22

        This'll be a place for H_M-related tidbits.

For example, I bought a tape called "Metal Frenzy" a couple
months ago which contains 3 songs each from:

        White Sister
        King Cobra
        Icon

and I'm starting to like Icon alot. The 3 songs were:

On Your Feet Rock On (Through the Night) Raise the Hammer

I wanna get some of their stuff soon.

    Yo Prky,
I have just taped it and i like it too. Excellent to listen
late at night on a long drive home when you are loking forward to
a nice warm Duvet. Like the Saxon track, never really heard much
by them before, i'll have to investigate which album it is off of
and race out and nab a copy of it.

Rhino has a 3-CD series out called "Youth Gone Wild", which
contains a bunch of 80's metal songs from the expected groups,
and some stuff thrown in from unexpected groups.

I already tossed the catalog, so I can't post the excerpts
    	[a partial list from each].

It is a series, so you can buy them individually if you want.
I probably have most of the songs already, but I might pick
them up to have them all together instead of on 25+ CD's.

366.61Identity II, Death is only the beginning...IIISUBSYS::MSOUCYWed Jul 31 1996 06:3326

Someone already posted in one of the other notes but I figured I'd
include it here with my reply on compilations.

I've been looking for a good DOOM compilation cd and so far haven't
found one/title yet. Anyone know of one lemme know!

I did get one called Identity II, 18 tracks, heavy/thrash/punk stuff on
it. That is where I heard Merauder, Moonspell, and others. Of the 18
tracks I can say I like at least 13-14 of them. I didn't care for the
punk or rappy songs (2, different bands, stuck mojo and one other)....
They did include a Nevermore song on it, along with Samael, The
Gathering (great female singer now in band, very good voice)...and
other bands. Hey, $2.99, can't complain on that price!

The other one I got on someones recommendation to get a taste of DEATH
metal and some doomy stuff was "Death is only the beginning...III". It
has some REALLY BRUTAL stuff on it! For the faint of heart, pass on it!
I listen to some heavy stuff occasionally, but some of this is WAAAAAAY
off my taste in music! I haven't finished listening to it all yet...had
    to take a break!

Lemme see, Therion is on there (remix of tune off the cd I have), along
with I think Dissection, and other brutal bands!

Got a new one that is pretty good if you like some heavy/death metal
stuff (and a little Black Metal in there). Song titles/Bands follow
with some opinions on the band:

    Song Band Comment(s)
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moonshield In Flames Not too bad, gruff vocals
To Mega Therion	Therion Theatrical sounding
    Copy-Cat Lacrimosa Heavy german dude/strange
Tears of Time	Crematory Heavy gruff vocals
My Kantele Amorphis Good song, new singer
    Nepenthe Sentenced Good tune, gruff
Symbol of Disgrace	Pyogenesis Dual vocals, light/death!
Shed your skin	Love like Blood Good tune!
Whatever that hurts	Tiamat Heavy duty, light/gruff
Request Denied	Hypocrisy Heavy tune, light/gruff vocals
A hamlet/vassal	Theatre of Tragedy	Theatrical kinda, gruff voc.
Seasons of Black	End of Green Decent heavy tune here
Burden Mindrot These guys are rough!
Die Liebe Atrocity/Das Ich	rough german stuff
Acme Sirrah New young band, death voc.
Nocturnal Suprem.	Cradle of Filth Black Metal, don't like it
Feather's Fell	Dissection hmm, not too bad

I've heard Mindrot on Death...is only the beginning, along with I think
Dissection, and Mindrot was rather brutal, along with Dissection, but
this last tune is VERY short, like under 1 minute.

I don't care for Sirrah, Cradle of Filth, Lacrimosa (don't really hate
it, just a different type of tune than what I expected throughout this
disc), Dissection (from what I've heard so far). I do like Pyogenesis,
Hypocrisy, End of Green since the former two have the dual vocalist
effects with one lighter singer then the Death/Gruff singer kicks in. I
like that type of effect from the bands as to me it lends more
heaviness to the tune overall!!!!!!!!! Hypocrisy though is cool with
this tune! Plus there is some classical sounding guitar and keys near
the end of the tune along with the distorted guitar. Overall good
effect here! Pyogenesis comes across with keys and a light sound at
first with the singer basically talking till the band kicks in, then
the Death/Gruff singer kicks in with "Symbol...of Disgrace" part of the
song! Excellent mix for this style of music! If you like heavy stuff I
would recommend this, if you are faint of heart and can't handle the
gruff/death vocal stuff, don't do it! I think it is an overall good
mix, but I would have substituted some of the bands/songs that I don't
    particularly care for!

    re: .63

Actually it was light/death, meaning tenor type female singer or mail
singing in a light tone, then the death/gruff/gravelly singer kicking
in or doing psuedo duet-type singing. I like that style more than just
the death/gruff/gravelly for the entire song/disc. But there are
exceptions to that rule too! Depends on the band/music style that is
    doing it.

366.67Peaceville compilation is quite goodSUBSYS::MSOUCYMentalmETALMikeMon Mar 17 1997 05:3317

Picked up the Peaceville compilation disk which has tunes from
Anathema, My Dying Bride, Autopsy, Pitch Shifter, Morta Skuld, The
Blood Divine, and some others. Some good tunes, some are more rawer and
deathish (autopsy, pitch shifter, morta skuld) while the Anathema, MDB,
and The Blood Divine are quite good with clean vocals (doomdeath style
metal I guess you can call it). I have been trying to get TBD disk but
it's not shown in Newbury Comics (web page or computer listing) so I
might have to order it direct from Peaceville. A decent mix of bands
and music on it. If you are into the heavier/darker stuff I would
receommend it, if you are thinking about getting some of this type of
music I would also recommend it, especially over Death is just the
beginning....I/II/III/IV disc sets since they are much heavier/darker
and would probably turn most potential listeners off dependant on
musical tastes and what you can stand!

366.68quite a good compilation from Peaceville!!SUBSYS::MSOUCYMentalmETALMikeWed Mar 19 1997 05:3038

Here's the tracks on the Peaceville Compilation "Under the sign of the
    Sacred Star"

Intro - The Blood Divine "Sacred, Unspoken, Unending
    1) The Blood Divine	- Aureole - excellent
    2) My Dying Bride	- From Darkest Skies - excellent
    3) Anathema - A Dying Wish - Excellent
    4) Dominion - Joyful Tears of Sorrow - good
    5) Paradise Lost	- Eternal - earlier PL
    6) Pentagram	- Be Forewarned - not too bad
    7) Autopsy - Critical Madness - decent
    8) Vital Remains	- Countess Bathory - not too bad
    9) Morta Skuld	- For All Eternity - somewhat brutal
    10) At The Gates	- The Swarm - cool tune! ;-)
    11) Pitch Shifter	- Catharsis - brutal tune, okay!
Outro - The Blood Divine - An Empyrean Tribute (haven't heard it yet)

All in all, a damn fine compilation! Mostly heavy, Pentagram sounds
very familiar, but also sound a little dated to the rest of stuff other
than Paradise Lost's Eternity which sounds from their Lost
Paradise/Gothic era. MDB and Anathema are some cool doomy tunes which
sound good cranked! Dominion is a new band, they aren't too shabby, 3
different vocalists, normal male, deathish male (low end) and decent
sounding female (it sounds like a woman ok?). Autopsy has normal
heavier vocals. Vital Remains is a thrashier sounding band, I was
expecting much more brutal vocals after reading/hearing about them from
Dle, but pretty good none-the-less. Morta Skuld are more brutal and
thrashy in the vocal department. At the Gates song is cool, a heavy
tune for sure, Sorin would like it! Pitch Shifter are definitely heavy
stuff along with MS. Now, The Blood Divine (if I read it right) has the
former singer from The Gathering I think, but their music is along the
lines of the newest MDB and Anathema stuff, and sounds quite good!

For those who want to check out some newer music on the heavier side I
would give this one two thumbs up, or two head-bangs! ;-)

I had also the compilation and my preferences were close to yours.
The Blood Divine is a band made by people who left Anathema (the singer
mainly) and Craddle of Filth. It's gothic metal oriented and their
first CD was very well received. I'll check for them as I like
    "Aureole" the most from compilation.

    re: -1

What happened with MDB and Anathema, their sound is getting quite
similar. I do like the new MDB - Like gods in the sun, similar to
Eternity by Anathema (whom I also want to get more of!).

TBD is going to be difficult to locate here...I sent mail asking for a
catalog from Peaceville whom I will order it from along with Dominion
and one or two others (Autopsy probably and other Anathema or MDB's
    Angel and the Dark River).

New one picked up last night (I *think* slab-man has this) by Century
    Media, Identity 3...D!

    Band Song thoughts
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Stuck Mojo Mental Melt Down	interesting, heavy
Sentenced Warrior of Life	off of Down, new singer
Strapping Young Lad Detox I'm not into this kid
    Moonspell Opium cool gothic metal
Nevermore the 7 tounges of god off politics of ecstasy
    Samael Rain off of passage
My Own Victim Walls apart gritty
    Morgoth Last Laugh interesting
    Arcturus Du Nordavind interesting
Iced Earth I died for you Dark Saga, excellent!
    Rotting Christ Archon Triarchy, interesting
    Turmoil New Media thrashy
    Eyehategod Dixie Whiskey louisiana sludgecore
    Chum Kindling Kind interesting
    Merauder Time Ends GOOD tune!
The Gathering Adrenaline off of single/ep
Grave Restrained I like these guys! ;-)
Trouble The Eye Plastic Green Head

Trouble is cool, been around for awhile, I'll have to look for their
stuff sometime later. Merauder are supposed to have a new one out late
summer, as well as The Gathering. Grave has some heavy death style
stuff, some catchy tunes (from what I've heard of them). This is a
great $3.99 investment to give you some exposure to some of the other
bands myself, Carlos Menendez and some others listen to. Identity I and
II are $2-3.00 each also, and you might find them in the compilation
section of Newbury Comics and manybe Tower. I don't know what
    Strawberries carries for compilations.
