| getting the band gigs ,talking with club owners ,getting newsletters
out, promotions, t shirts Keeping track of money from gigs. most
inportant keep in constant touch with your band on what you are
doing. daily updates are inportant. Start by getting a promo packege
together. Pictures ,Bio, ect, design a logo. have everyone involed
with the band get out and get people on the a mailing listfor your
newsletter. A newsletter is inportant part of promo. keeping people
informed of where you're gigging. selling t shirts at gigs. is great
promo for the band especialy in the high schools. You got these
kids who are going to grow with the band who will be bying your
records. Kids love this sh*t I sold 120 t shirts in 2 weeks...35
of them to kids at my Kid sister's high school kids. There's a start.
You gotta give 120% commitment to this or it will be very frustrating
for both parties. we've gone through alot of Bozo's who thought
they could be managers but only to find that they didn't know shit!
Good luck

300.2 | MANAGER??? Jeesh... | VICKI::SHIPPING | Remember... walking in the sand | Mon Oct 31 1988 10:54 | 18 |
| I know how you feel. My friend Ricks "band", which right now only
consists of himself (bass) his friend Steve (lead) and a drummer
asked me of al people to be their manager. (Right, I'm 20 years
old, what the hell do I know???)
But I took them out to eat last Tuesday, and we came up with a name
for the group (which will hopefully be a permanent one) I4NI, a
logo (which is made to look like a biplane with a guitar neck) and
several ideas, t-shirts included. We took some promo shots the
same night. A mailing list is a good idea, as soon as they get
the gigs going strong (I suppose its time to get some contacts!)
we'll try to do that.
Thats my first question. How do I get strong contacts to begin
with? The fact that I'm only 20 suc*s. Any other promotional
ideas? Were thinking of getting posters everywhere...

I'd live with the embarrasment!!! (^;
So, Pete, what do you suggest that I do? Tell them to get another
manager and get experience taking notes from him? How does one
get experience like that??? I want to help these guys. They're
my friends. I know I don't have experience, but I'm no fool and
I've got ambition. Help me out here.

300.6 | Hmmm. Looks easy enough... But I know theres more to it... | VICKI::SHIPPING | Remember... walking in the sand | Mon Oct 31 1988 14:06 | 10 |
| No sweat. Hitman, conman, whatever...
Sounds easy enough. Money is no object. We feel that whatever
money we put in, we'll get back tenfold later.
I take it for granted that its the dealing with the club managers
that is the hard part? Where is a good place for a begining band
to start off at, that is what kind of club or what club in particular?

I wouldn't exactly be counting the dollars...many bands never make
money.

Err, I was talking about, uh, about, experience! Ya, Thats it!
Think optimistically. If it doesnt go anywhere, then we've learned
something. Start again!

| My feeling is that you shuld never, ever, think about money. If
your in it for the money (any musician) your in the wrong business.
I'm happy if we get to make the PA payment !

| A lot of bands with a LOT of talent never make a dime...And therefore
break up, cuz they aren't making any money.

300.13 | Easy | CSC32::G_HOUSE | Dracula Sucks | Mon Oct 31 1988 18:55 | 9 |
| First, ya get yer dictionary. Then ya find "avarice", it's in with
the "A"s. Goes something like this:
avarice (av-e-ris) n. An extreme desire for wealth; cupidity. [ME <
OFr. < Lat. avaritia < ararus, greedy <avere, to desire.]
Or something like that... ;^)
