| I have a tape someone gave me (homemade job...) that just says "Michael
Schenker" on it. It contains (among others ...) a song called
"Samurai" and it smokes. Most of the other tunes on it are good
too. This is the only thing I've heard from him solo but if you get
a chance pick up this tape/record/whatever.

| To correct myself, the album I have is "The Michael Schenker Group".
It has such songs as "Armed and Ready", "Into the Arena", and "Cry
for the Nations" (which by the way has one of my favorite examples
of an emotional,melodic guitar solo).
Sorry for the confusion, 'cause there is a different album called
"MSG" that I don't have (currently).

Michael also did 3 songs on the Scorpions 'Lovedrive' album but
I'm not sure if that was right before or right after UFO split.
I'm a big Schenker fan and have all of the MSG albums. I bought
them all as imports before they were officially released here.
'Assault Attack' shows alot of Graham Bonnet's influence and is
(IMO) harder edged than when Gary Barden was up front. Graham's
super huge ego clashed with Michaels fairly large one and that combo
was short lived.
I like the first album (Michael Schenker Group) the best but I
think it was poorly produced, surpressing some of the power and
taking alot of edge off of the total sound.

| Michael Schenker is cool! I remember (early on) that Eddie Van Halen
listed him as his biggest influence and his favorite guitarist. So I
(of course) went out and picked up some of his stuff (this was when
he was still with UFO) - he was/is great! Although I like the solo
stuff, my favorite playing by him is on UFO's "Strangers in the Night"
live LP - he is just AWESOME there.
I agree with Greg - very elodic style, with a lot of feeling. He uses
speed so much more tastefully than most metal guitarists. I wish more
of those speedsters would take note!

Cat, I agree 100% with that. I've seen MS with UFO several times
and seen MSG also. This is another guy that can tear up a guitar!
He does have the speed (even tho he has lost some flash since he
left UFO. I understand he went through some Alcohol/drug problems
since then) and he can play with real emotion. Love To Love off
Strangers In The Night an example.

| I seen MSG on their Perfect Timing Tour when they were supporting
Whitesnake. I was very impressed with the other guitarist he had
called Midge Perry. Unfortunatly it seems he has left the band and
there is also confusion surrounding the singer Robin MaCauley(sp?).
I though Schenker and Midge blew the Whitesnake guitaists away as
far as feeling, speed and clear sound went although some off the
songs are a lot weeker than Whitesnakes.
If you don't like live albums then I would by Assault Attack next
as the vocals on Built to Destroy are a little strange.

I must say I agree with all of your notes. Micheal Schenker
has always been one of my all time favorites. I have all his albums.
His guitar playing is so unbelievable. His solo's on his UFO Force
It album are truely incredible.
My favorite solo album is Micheal Schenker Group and Live
at Budakon is a great live album.
I remember reading about Mike's brother Rudolph being in
a band in Germany but had to work so he had Mike learn songs he
was going to play. Rudolph said Mike just had a knack and soon was
better than Rudolph. They started a band together with Klaus Meine
that soon became the Scorpions. They released an album called Lonesome
Crow. It is a strange album. Shortly after Mike joined UFO. Another
great guitarist joined Scorpions Ulrich Roth. Mike even co-wrote
a song with Ulrich called Fly to the Rainbow the title song of the
Scorps first album on RCA. Ulrich Roth is a unbelievable guitarist
himself but has a very strong Hendrix infatuation. He even went
out with a woman that looked like Hendrixs girlfriend.
When Ulrich decided to leave Scorpions then Mike replaced
him for the Scorpions Lovedrive album. Mike said that he couldn't
join the band because he just felt stymied by player all of Ulrich's
licks instead of his own and decided to start his own band. I remember
him saying that he played just about all the lead on the Lovedrive
album while Mathias Jabs was breaking in.
The only other thing I would like to add is that I do have
a copy of an EP with Armed and Ready, Into the Arena both Live and
a study version of Cry to the Nations from the Micheal Schenker
Group. The live tracks are the same lineup from Live in Budakon
with Cozy Powell, Gary Barden, etc... This is a great ep. The live
versions are even better than the ones on Budakon and the sound
quality is pretty decent.
I hope I didn't bore anyone

| Over the weekend, I picked up UFO's 'Strangers in the Night' on CD. (They
fit the double album on 1 CD, and it's a cheapie - about $12.99!)
This album is a must for all guitar/HM fans - it really is *that* good!
I had forgotten about it a little bit, not having listened to it that
often in the past few years. But listening to it, it sounds even better
than it used to, and the sound quality on the CD is quite good.
Very few HM bands out today could compare to UFO for their combination
of punch and melody (I suppose the closest would be Tesla).
So - when are Schenker/Mogg/Way/etc. gonna give us a reunion? I'll be there!

re:14 Strongly agree with Cat - Strangers in the Night is a Klassic.
Been a Schenker Bros fan for years, got most of the UFO/Scorpions/MSG
albums. Favourite MSG album, which never left the cassette player for
about 6 months is the Live at Budokan - originally only available
on Japanese import, until Chrysalis responded to the demand.
I've a tape of their Reading '82 gig which is even better IMO, this
was when "a certain Mr. Bonnet was unable to be here" and Gary Barden
stepped in at short notice.
Have u noticed, on every album Schenker plays including with UFO
there is a guitar instrumental? faves include "Into the Arena",
"Lost Horizons/Courvoisier concerto" (especially at Reading)
and of course "Captain Nemo" The exception is "Perfect Timing"
which I felt had so many strong songs on it anyway.
Any info on the next opus??

| You guys have missed a little bit on their latest stuff. They are
still (or were) using MSG, but the full name they were using was the
McAuley-Schenker Group. With singer Robin McAuley, who has a cool
voice. Their album Perfect Timing, IMO, was really cool, and I really
liked it. It wasn't any typical metal. It was good, hard and straight
forward with Michael really wailing on guitar. He's really good.
I saw them live with Rush on the Hold Your Fire tour '88. They
sounded really good, but unfortunately they didn't get a warm reception
from the crowd, and I was about the only one yelling for them.
I felt bad because they did a sing-along thing, and the crowd was
silent. I tried to help, but it didn't work.
Anyway, if anyone hears about any new plans, let us know!

| Thanks to all of you who have responded...my collection is
growing!
With my unquenchable thirst for Schenker music and information,
I've been pouring through back issues of guitar magazines in
an attempt to find out *why* he isn't a household word.
Based on my reading, and my own listening, I would say is that
his inability to come up with a hit single is the main problem.
Of course, this says more about the state of music and the industry
than it does about Michael's playing, but this is pure conjecture
on my part, anyway. I suspect his non-tapping, non-whammy style is
considered "old-fashioned" by the youth who are more taken with
dazzling displays of techno-wizardry.
What do you think? Is there still room for a guy with a perfect
string-bending technique and a style that clearly reveals his love
for both blues and classical music?
Or is it time to hire Desmond Child and Bruce Fairbain (sp?), fire
up the big drum sound, and cover a seventies song in order to break
the album on to the charts?
Curious to know what you think,

On the subject of Aerosmith, rumour has it that Herr Schenker was
offered Joe Perry's vacant spot in the Smith's line up many years
back. Fact or rumour? I don't know. Buttttt, now this is true, Schenker
was also offered a job in Ozzy's band just after Randy Rhodes copped
it. According to Ozzy, the cool blond one asked for a kings ransom.
He was told where to go and then Bernie Torme ( whatever happ...)
joined briefly.
Anyone got anymore news on the much touted ( about 18 months ago

| Anybody have "Perfect Timing" by the McCauley-Schenker group?
How is that? How is McCauley's voice compared to Gary
Barden's voice?
I'm not sure I cared for "Assault Attack" with Graham Bonnet.
Is it me, or does he sort of resemble Dio? Not that that is
bad or anything, but I must admit, I don't care for Ronnie's
approach, just a personal thing.
Michael claims he was invited to audition for the Stones many
moons ago when Mick Taylor left. He says that his brother
Rudolph talked him out of it, fearing the Stones excessive
life-style would kill the then-young Michael.
As it happens, Michael did spend a few years in the bottle,
didn't he?
As my collection grows, the Electric Chair album is holding
forthas my favorite. That album features Don Airey on keys
(he's been in about a million metal bands, hasn't he?)
and Mo Foster on bass, with Simon Phillips on drums.
NOTE: Jeff Beck fans will remember Mo Foster and Simon Phillips
as the rhythm section for "THERE AND BACK."
And, of course, Mr. Phillips manned the drums for the
Summer 89 Who reunion tour.

More..Never Trust A Stranger..Looking For Love..Secondary Motion
The only (minor) criticism I have of the album is that as mentioned
in .6 of this note, the production (by Ron Nevison) is crap.
Cozy Powells' drums totally overpower everything else (except in
a few instances where Michael's guitar is soaring above and beyond
this planet!!)
The bass and the keys are given no real presence at all.
Nevertheless, all things considered definately worth the 7 squid
!!

I bought the new MSG CD last weekend. It is entitled just M.S.G. You
might be hearing a cut called "When I'm Gone" that seems to be getting
alot of air play. It doesn't have the edge like the previous release
"Save Yourself", but I really like it alot.
I never have been real fond of Robin McAuly's vocals, but I love to
hear Michael Schenker play. The mix on this is much heavier on guitar,
but the songs are more commercial sounding, I think alot of people here
in HM might bash it for the sound of some of the cuts.
But, if you're a Michael Schenker fan, I highly recommend it. There
are some real intresting pieces on it. One called "This Broken Heart",
and another entitled "The Never Ending Nightmare". Worth a listen.

| I agree with Staynes, the first Michael Schenker solo album is also my
favorite since he went out on his own. There were good songs on some
of the rest of them, but overall they lacked luster. The first
McCauley-Schenker album wasn't bad, but it was a little more commercial
then I'd like to hear from them. If the new one is even more that way,
maybe I'll wait awhile and get it from the cutout bin...
My personal feeling is that while Michael is a great guitarist and
comes up with killer acompanying parts, he really isn't that great of a
songwriter and needs someone that is good at that to work with. His
work with UFO still tops the list of my favorite he's done.

Friz; The song Eve doesn't really do much for me either. Not one of
the better ones on it.
I totally agree that the Michael Schenker Group efforts were far
superior of the McCauly Schenker stuff. One thing I was disappointed
about is that the acoustical version of "When I'm Gone" wasn't on
the CD. It must be something only the radio stations are getting.
Greg; From the things we've talked about intrest wise lately I don't
think you'd like it at all.
I think there were some great songs on Save Yourself especially the
title track!

| Finally, I have found some Schenker fans!!!
I have been a MS fan since the beginning, as well as a Scorps fan.
I caught MSG on the road doing the unplugged set in Santa Clara Ca.
and it was hot, unfortunaltely MSG will not be touring this summer due
to the slumping sales of the lastest longplayer MSG. Radio stations
have pretty much stopped playing When I'm Gone except ocasionally they
will play the acoustic version which by the way is available as an
import which also includes acoustic versions of Anytime, Bad Boys,
What happens to me and one other that eludes me right now.
I really enjoyed reading some of the comments in this notes file and
hope to continue reading more on MSG, keep on rockin!!!!

I agree. I have been a long time Schenker fan and was not too thrilled
with the new one. However, after alot of listening, I have grown to
really like it alot. Especially "Paradise" & "This Broken Heart". I
like the tune "When I'm Gone", but I wish I could get hold of a version
that I have heard on the radio only once, it was an accoustical version
of it and sounded great.
I have also been listening to "Save Yourself" alot lately. The last
song on the album "Take Me Back" is my favorite. Even though Schenker
has become more commercial sounding the last few years, I still enjoy
his playing ALOT!

| Thanks to all who have mailed me concerning the fan club. To save me
individually mailing you all, here is the latest.
Michael Schenker has decided to close the chapter of MSG twelve years
after the groups formation. Releasing the Michael Schenker Group album in
September 1980 with Gary Barden on vocals and session muscians Simon Phillips
on drums and Mo Foster on Bass. During this time MSG have recorded seven studio
albums and releasing a further two live albums. Michael has worked with
excellent muscians complimenting his music enjoying his time enourmously but
now feels that the time is right for a directional change. Along with the nine
MSG albums, Michael has recorded the same amount again with UFO, Scorpions
and Contraband bringing the total to eighteen albums since the beginning of
his career.
Michael is currently in the studio recording an acoustic instrumental
album which will be completed later this year. In appreciation to all his loyal
fans, Michael has decided to release the album initially through the Official
Fan Club and the first 1000 orders will find their names on the album cover
artwork. Titled "Thank You" will be released on Michaels own label "Positive
Energy", set up specifically for projects as a solo artist. This is the first
time Michael has undertaken a project of this kind outside a band environment
and is his way of remaining totally creative without any external pressures.
Michael sees this album as a dedication to all his supporters.
Those of you who would like to join the fan club and get their name on
the artwork sleeve send a SAE to:

| GRRREEEAAAT!!! I am possibly the worlds biggest Schenker fan,and
dicovering this conference is a real thrill!!
I've been a fan from the late 70's,and I agree with all of you that his
best stuff was done with UFO. Strangers in the Night and Obsession are
absolute Klassix!!
Not one to be big-headed,I have met the main man on several occasions
at Pete Way's house in Birmingham England. Pete and Lawrence Archer
have recently produced an album by a Nottingham group called WRAITH,of
which I was once Lead/Rythm Guitar and I played on two of the
tracks..this explains my connection.
However, despite being such a big fan Michael is not really receptive to
"I'm your biggest fan"type of people,he's more interested in your
perception of life and what makes you happy..and he almost vomits when
you mention his talent....yes he can be arrogant..in fact he's a bit
wierd when you talk to him, that is if he feels he wants to talk to you!
MSG are contracted to do one more Japanese Tour, after that they
will SPLIT.
Peter Mensch is presently coordinating a re-union of the "classic"
Strangers line-up. Michael Schenker has insisted on 200,000 up-front
and that all his debts (250,000) are cleared.
Andy Parker is currently residing/working as a session drummer in Japan
and will be joining, pending Schenker's demands. Paul Raymond was
working with a guy from Angel(the ep is crap) and has also written
several TV jingles...eg Sunkist ....he will also be joining.
The present UFO line up will cease to exist if this historic event
occurs.
This info is straight from Pete Way's mouth..I'm not messing about or
misleading any of you!
PS The Wraith Album is out now "Danger Calling"
If any of you want to talk about anything to do with Schenker lets get
talking!!
Apologies if I'm boring any of you,and equally apologies if I come over
as a Big head, but I stress all the above is honest 'guv.
Cheers

Curious ... you mentioned you were a guitarist -- are you influenced
by Schenker in your lead playing?? I know lots of players who were
into the "old" Schenker music (Scorps, UFO, and early MSG) who really
owe a lot of their personal style to Michael ... curious if you're
one of these players??
Buck, who's guitaring was probably influenced by Ace Frehley more than

289.98 | Natural Thing You get at the start | JUMBLY::GREATREX | | Wed Sep 30 1992 15:26 | 60 |
| A little over a year ago there was a press release in Kerrang music magazine.
It advertised a benefit concert for Action 2000 - a charity whos goal is to
erradicate world hunger by the year 2000 - and the intention was for Michael
Schenker to play with UFO and the different MSG lineups over the years. The
press release gave a fax number for companies or any individuals to call up
and give their services free of charge to make the project happen.
I have been a long time fan of Michaels starting as far back as 1973 when he
first joined UFO. So this was my chance of possibly contributing to Action 2000
and maybe, just maybe, meeting the guitarist himself. I am a computer graphic
artist and offered my services for free artwork if a video was to be made
or if any other required packaging was needed. I also mentioned that I had done a short
a retrospective of Michaels career. To my amazement, Michaels management at the
time picked up on the retrospective and asked me for more information. This led
to me flying out to LA last March from the UK.
I was really nervous about meeting Michael after following him for 19 years and
my biggest concern was that my image of him might be shattered. I knew I would
never be dissapointed with his fretwork but, I didnt know what Michael would
be like as a person, how he would react to me. I had read so much about him. I
kept an open mind knowing that it was important to judge people as you find
them, knowing how the media distort and make news for news sake.
I spent five days in LA and on the first night was given an ALL ACCESS pass
where I met Michael backstage. First impressions was a tall man with great
presence. Blonde hair everywhere (Bad Boys lyric) with very strong blue eyes.
His command of the english language is excellent and has a great sense of humour.
To my astonishment, Michael was as thrilled as I was knowing I had made a
special trip all the way to LA to meet up as I was to be there. He made me feel
relaxed and included me in the conversations backstage with the likes of
Warren DiMartini and Spencer Sercombe.
Every day Michael made the effort to meet up with me, buying lunches and
evening meals as well as spending all of Sunday with him
catching the bus with in and around LA.
My fears were natural and unfounded but all my expectations and hopes were
far exceeded. You do hear a lot about Michaels temperament but what I found
was a very thoughtfull person who loves his music and does not consider
himself to be a guitar God at all. He wants people to enjoy his music and if
they do it is a real bonus. Michael has never comprimised his playing. Even
the latest three albums with Robin McAuley has just as much guitar work in
as any of the other albums. Michael has not been happy with his management over
the years making decissions for the band as well as the hundreds of other acts
they have. No one has ever dedicated 100% of their time totally in promoting
Michael. This is why a decision has been made to set up his own record label
for solo projects and have complete control of all decisions. For this Michael
needs all our help and support.
As well as the solo projects, Michael now feels that the UFO reformation
should take place to continue where they left off in late '78 and complete
the unique chemistry built up by SCHENKER/MOGG/WAY/PARKER partnership.
Phil Mogg, Andy Parker and Pete Way are currently in LA discussing the
possible reformation as I write. This I am looking forward to and like
many others know its a dream that could come true.
Keep you all posted

Some. I'm not a HUGE MS fan, but back in the 80s when I was heavy duty
into the "Euro metal quasi-classical" trip, I was checking out a LOT
of MS and Ulrich Roth. I don't liksten much to that kind of stuff

>if so I would be interested to know if you know anything about his

Yeah, that's pretty much what he plays through...his Gibson V's into
the wah-wah into the Marshall 50 watters. That's basically my setup,
too, but with different components (Ibanez guitar and EVH amp).

| IMHO, a Gibson with good pickups into a Marshall is one of the best
setups for rock guitar that you can have! It's just a killer tone!
I always like Michael's tone, and his playing on Strangers is
outstanding. I never took the time to learn any of those songs, but I
have no doubt that my playing has been influenced to it to some degree
'cause I used to play that album CONSTANTLY back around '77-'79. I
wore out two different cassette tapes I made of it.

| Hey Tristan,
Do you have any more info re more info regarding the UFO reunion, this
is truly very exciting. I know the Thank You album is available
only through the Fan Club initially. Do you have any idea when this
will be released to the record stores? Also what about the
autobiography?
And now a questions to all MSG fans, this morning on my way to work,
(stuck in traffic as usual) I was listening to Assault Attack, there is
a track on there called Dancer. For the life of me I can't understand
half of what Bonnet is singing, does anyone know the lyrics to this
song?????? Does anyone know of where UFO videos with Michael as well as
MSG videos might be available? I have searched far and wide and have
been unsuccessful in my attempts. I did manage to get the video for
"When i'm gone" but that is it. Can anyone help????

Graham Bonnet, a singer who was'nt ideally built for good lyrics.

Joe Lynn Turner was GREAT with Yngwie!!!!! I saw that show in Denver
and Lita opened her hole and Yngwie and Joe showed her what is was for.
Seriously, When I saw Yngwie in concert he didn't have any attitude
at all. He was laughing, jumping, throwin' picks, smiling at the band and
the audience. I don't see where people think he has an attitude.
If he does have one...He deserves too! He FACKIN' brilliant.

Sure the bloke is a brilliant guitar player, but what he fails to

| With regard to the last thirty or forty notes in this conference. I thought
Rock muscians and fans had a common interest and that is the love of music.
We should be showing the world that Rock is not a steryotyped fuzzy noise
played by non muscians. We should be proud of people such as Yngwie and not
put down fellow muscians. Yngwie is a master of his craft, enjoyes what
he does and gives pleasure to so many. Michael enjoys his music and gives
me great pleasure. My personal view is that:
Michael Schenker is, without question, an electric guitarist without peer, a
veritable pioneer of the whole Euro-classical style that has been made universally
popular by the likes of Malmsteen and Via.And unlike so many other pioneers
Schenker continues to dazzle with his inspired fretwork. Michael Schenkers
playing is spellbinding and captivating, inspiring to all in the music world
and keeps Rock interesting.
If you want to have a dig at anyone, choose the people from the world of POP
or Acid House.

| Schenker fans,
Just wanted to say goodbye. As of Dec 1st, I will no longer be an
employee of DEC, it was great finding this conference and realizing that
there are a tremendous amount of M.S. fans out there.
Long live Schenker and his music!!!
Take care and happy holidays to all you conferencers.

him on the radio last weekend. And I SWEAR, he mentioned his own fan
club about 20 times!!!!!!!!!! He kept giving this 800 number to call
for info about it!

Yer kidding??? You didn't like call it repeatedly for like two weeks
after hearing it, just to get the latest scoop on what Michael's doing.
Hey, you might even get to TALK to him (if you speak German) if you
call, he's the President of the fan club, you know!

289.226 | The latest NEWS | RDGENG::GREATREX | | Fri Feb 11 1994 07:54 | 18 |
| Michael Schenker supported the Scorpions on their 1993 European Tour
covering Athens, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Poland & Czech
Republic before moving on to Austria, Holland, France, Spain, Germany,
Portugal, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium. He joined the Scorpions
onstage mid-way through their set to play five songs:
Smoke Is Going Down, Always Somewhere, Under The Same Sun, Positive
Forward and Holiday.
In January 1994, Michael also joined the Scorpions in Japan for a three
date tour finishing at the Budokan.
Last November 1993, Michael spent a month in London rehearsing with
UFO, Phil Mogg, Pete Way, Paul Raymond and Andy Parker (Lights Out,
Obsession & Strangers in the Night line-up). In December they toured
Germany for eight gigs. In January 1994 it was officially announced
that UFO have reformed with Michael and a planned studio album release

| I just was checking out the UFO homepage
(http://www.csv.warwick.ac.uk/~masai/ufo)
In the very fine print it says:
"Michael Schenker and UFO logos (C) Tristan Greatrex"
Could this be the one and only Tristan???
Coincidence? I think not.
Tim
They also nixed the rumor that Michael Schenker had dyed his hair green and had
joined Faster Pussycat and was touring with Warrant, Bon Jovi and Journey as
well as dumping Gibson and being sponsored by Ibanez Guitars...
Too funny!

| Yep, I noticed Tristran's copyright on the logos as well. As for
the Herr with green hair (not true, I know) I'm really pi**ed off
with his attitude and the fact that I now won't be able to see them.
Come back Paul Chapman, all is forgiven.
Barry.

| Patrick,
You weren't on the net back in the days of Tristan --
when he first showed up here -- note 860.0 was cross-posted to about
12 different note subjects and semi-related topics -- it was VERY
amusing, as you can tell, Tim Fennell and I *still* get quite a kick
out of it.

| Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I was blind...
I see now, yer right, I was in here back in 1988, but I was
so into speed metal back then, I didn't read anything but
the Slayer topic.
Amazing how it takes over so easy, I couldn't listen to my
old UFO records after I discovered Slayer.
Tsk, tsk, so into speed couldn't see the music for it's own
sake. I listen to many kinds of music, again, now that I've
purged speed/core/mayhem from my psyche...
